Charlize Theron’s 2005 Sci-Fi Film That Almost Left Her Paralyzed Finds a New Streaming Home
Image
Charlize Theron has starred in her fair share of action films, which, according to her, don’t cause her as many injuries on set as opposed to the non-action ones. However, while filming this 2005 action sci-fi that performed poorly both critically and commercially, the actress was almost paralyzed when a stunt went wrong. The film in question is Aeon Flux – loosely based on the adult animated avant-garde MTV series– and it has found a new streaming home for summer and ahead of its 20th anniversary.

Aeon Flux was released on December 2, 2005, by Paramount Pictures in the U.S., where it made less than $26,000,000. Two decades later, the live-action pic has landed on Paramount+, having arrived on Friday, August 1. Directed by Karyn Kusama, Aeon Flux was created with a production budget of $55-62 million, but it failed to deliver at the box office, grossing only $52 million worldwide. On top of that,...

Mike Fleming Jr: Hemdale Back From Dead With Provocative ‘Torn’; Donald Trump’s Beak-Wetting Right Out Of ‘The Godfather Part II’
Image
Exclusive: Hemdale Films, the one film production company to generate back-to-back Best Picture Oscar winners (Platoon and The Last Emperor), is re-emerging for the first time in forever. Revived by Eric Parkinson as a releasing label, Hemdale will release Torn: The Israeli-Palestine Poster War on NYC Streets. The provocative documentary by director Nim Shapira focuses on the street war that broke out between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups that tore down each other’s messages about the 250 hostages taken by Hamas during the October 7 terror attack in Israel. The posters inflamed heated passion among those who put them up to raise awareness of the hostages and those who tore them down to show their opposition to Israel’s subsequent Gaza offensive. It led to heated arguments and often violence. Hemdale will open the film in theaters September 5 in New York and Los Angeles with a rollout to follow in the fall...

The Walking Dead Show Creator Robert Kirkman Would Make If He Got The Rights Back
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Just like any good zombie, "The Walking Dead" won't stay down. Since the debut of "The Walking Dead" comic in 2003, it's become one of the biggest non-superhero comics out there, and the TV adaptation that launched on AMC in 2010 took that popularity even higher. Though "The Walking Dead" ended its 11-season, 177-episode run in 2022, it lives on in spin-offs such as "Dead City" and "Daryl Dixon."

Image Comics is also currently reprinting original black-and-white "Walking Dead" comics (which wrapped in 2019) in full color and with new cover art as "The Walking Dead Deluxe." The new issues include all-new letters columns in the back of the books, where the creators answer questions from readers who wrote in. In "The Walking Dead Deluxe" #85, Noel Julian from Puerto Rico wrote in asking:

"I've been thinking about how great the Invincible show is and...

Gale Anne Hurd on Aliens, Roger Corman and the realities of producing some of Hollywood’s biggest hits
Gale Anne Hurd
From xenomorphs to graboids, terminators to the literal walking dead, producer Gale Anne Hurd’s path from Roger Corman’s assistant to one of the most trustworthy pairs of hands in Hollywood is the stuff of movie legend. An early champion and collaborator of James Cameron, a survivor of endless tinseltown fuck-ups and the woman at the production helm of not one, not two, but seven of the genre world’s most celebrated cornerstones.

So it’s no wonder that she’s named this year’s Forbidden Worlds Legend, lionised by a film festival devoted to projecting the biggest, boldest and silliest in sci-fi and horror, on an old IMAX screen the size of a building. It’s somewhat fitting of her character too that Hurd made the journey to collect the award in person, refusing any half-measures and happily spilling all about a very long, very dramatic, and very storied career.

Image

Waterworld | The Ulysses Cut gets its UK cinema debut next week
Image
The extended Ulysses Cut of Waterworld is heading to a massive IMAX screen in Bristol: more on the very special screening here.

1995’s Waterworld is a film often written about, often discussed, and often at the expense of the film in the midst of it all. Notorious when it was released for being the most expensive film of all time, it saw star and producer Kevin Costner and director Kevin Reynolds unite for a third film together. After the wonderful Fandango, they’d fall out over Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, make up, and then fall out again making Waterworld.

Famously, it wasn’t Reynolds’ cut of Waterworld that made it into cinemas back in 1995, and much footage was excised. But then, over time, alternate cuts have come to light, the longest of which is known as the ‘Ulysses’ version of the film. Those who bought the terrific Arrow Video...

Waterworld, Jawsploitation & Gale Anne Hurd, on IMAX! Bristol’s Forbidden Worlds Film Festival returns for 2025
Image
Bristol’s leading repertory genre film festival returns for another banner year of explosive action and terrifying monster movies in 2025, with Forbidden Worlds of the Deep; a near week-long celebration of classic and cult films set on, around the ocean.

After all, 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the genre movie to end all genre movies – Jaws. And what better way to celebrate the legacy of Spielberg’s industry shifting blockbuster than with big-screen bows for some of the all-time greatest Jawsploitation knock-offs. Including schlocky camp creature-feature Alligator and a Saturday night IMAX screening of the new 4K restoration of Dino de Laurentis’s positively mental Orca (preceded by a presentation from The Bad Movie Bible’s Rob Hill).

Also Jaws-adjacent is a couple of sea monster themed curios in the James Earl Jones-starrer Blood Tide (playing late Friday night), and the first ever UK theatrical screening of Daiei...

Horror TV Shows We Miss – Dark Angel
Image
When picking the next show to cover, I always ask myself: what’s something I used to watch that people either loved or completely forgot about—but should still love? This time, it’s Dark Angel. When I mentioned Dark Angel to someone, they immediately assumed I meant a different show. “No,” I said, “the one with Jessica Alba.” She was great in Idle Hands, but Dark Angel? That was something else. Honestly, I’m a little surprised I even watched it back then.

James Cameron—who needs no introduction—teamed up with Charles H. Eglee to make Dark Angel his first big project under his production company. Eglee, of course, is best known for Piranha 2… sure, he’s done other things, but for the sake of this episode, that’s the only credit that matters. The two cooked up Dark Angel while Cameron was, as always, on a quest...

James Cameron's 'The Terminator' Is Now Streaming for Free
Image
One of, if not the greatest, science fiction action movie ever made (this is not an exaggeration or hyperbolic in any way) is now streaming free. Released during the glorious cinematic decade that was the 1980s, 1984’s The Terminator is one of the most seminal examples of the genre, and made an icon of director James Cameron and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, and Linda Hamilton. And you can now watch this slice of sci-fi brilliance without spending a dime.

Directed by James Cameron who, of course, has since gone on to become one of the most successful filmmakers of all time with the likes of Titanic and the Avatar franchise and written by Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd, The Terminator tells that age-old tale of a girl and a guy. Except, in this case, the girl's unborn son is destined to save mankind from a hostile artificial intelligence, and...

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) – What Happened to This Sci-Fi Thriller Movie?
Image
While filming Piranha II: The Spawning, director James Cameron had a fever dream that would lead to him creating a slasher horror science fiction epic called The Terminator. The film would defy all odds, grossing nearly $80 million dollars on a $6.4 million dollar budget. Putting the world on notice that both Cameron and his star, Arnold Schwarzenegger had arrived. How do you top that? I guess you make arguably the greatest action movie of all time, and one of the greatest films to ever grace a movie screen in general. This is the story of what the f*ck happened to Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

One thing Judgment Day has in common with all other sequels in the franchise, is that the story begins with a battle for the rights. This story included an almost physical fight between Cameron and Hemdale Production Company’s John Daly after Daly attempted to alter...

‘Virus’ – Revisiting the Comic, the Novel, and the Movie Jamie Lee Curtis Calls “Unbelievably Bad”
Image
The movie Virus did not officially scuttle across screens until 1999, but its biomechanical horrors first sprang to life a bit earlier. The road to screen adaptation was not straightforward for Navy Seal turned writer Chuck Pfarrer; he first pitched his high concept to Universal Pictures, only to then have it land at Dark Horse Comics. Upon the series’ success, Pfarrer tried his luck again with Universal. This time, though, producer Gale Anne Hurd was there to help get Virus optioned as well as find a potential director.

It was in 1995 that Universal first approached John Bruno about helming Virus. Initially, the visual effects artist was hesitant about directing a feature, and Pfarrer’s screenplay was a major factor in that uncertainty; he found it to be too dense and complicated for his liking. Yet after a talk with colleague and friend James Cameron, Bruno eventually accepted the offer, providing that...

A Scheduling Conflict Changed The Look Of An Entire Sci-Fi Franchise
Image
When James Cameron and his producing partner Gale Anne Hurd set out to make "The Terminator" they encountered so many setbacks it's a wonder the film ever came to fruition. Cameron, who'd had a disastrous experience serving as an interim director on 1982's "Piranha II: The Spawning," needed a movie that would essentially launch his filmmaking career, but with little directing experience, getting anything off the ground by himself was going to be difficult. Thankfully, he and Hurd managed to scrape together the funds needed to shoot a version of Cameron's own story about a killer cyborg sent back in time on a murderous mission. But getting the funding was just the first hurdle.

Once Cameron cast Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role, he had to wait for the actor to become available, which held up production for six to eight months. Then, when he finally became available, it transpired...

The Terminator's Sarah Connor Was Indirectly Inspired By Another Legendary Sci-Fi Hero
Image
There's so much to love about 1984's "The Terminator" that it's hard to imagine how much of a slog it was to get made. Director James Cameron worked on a tight budget under incredible time pressures and was constantly forced to pivot when things went awry. Still, he produced a sci-fi horror classic that betrays nothing of its troubled production. So much of his directorial debut (we'll gloss over his part in "Piranha II: The Spawning") just worked, but for Cameron, without Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor at the center, there was no movie.

Producer Gale Anne Hurd saved "The Terminator" from a happy ending. Had certain studio executives had their way, the iconic scene that manifested Cameron's nightmarish vision of a Terminator exoskeleton rising from the fire would have been cut in favor of a final shot of Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) and Sarah Connor hugging. Imagine the legacy...

James Cameron Tried To Outdo A Specific Sci-Fi Movie With The Terminator
Image
"The Terminator" is one of those unimpeachable sci-fi classics that feels fundamental to the evolution of the genre. As such, it's strange to think of director James Cameron having any specific inspiration, especially considering the impetus for the 1984 movie was as personal as Cameron having a nightmare which included that now famous image of a chrome Terminator exoskeleton emerging from a fire.

Beyond that, "The Terminator" has taken on a sort of mythical aura in the history of cinema. Like Paul McCartney having to verify "Yesterday" didn't already exist before he could accept that he'd written it, the idea for "The Terminator" seems like such a foundational sci-fi concept that it's odd to think there was a time when it didn't exist in the public consciousness. A killer robot is sent back in time to prevent a future war — like all good ideas it's simple without being simplistic and made...

'I Have Seen It 3 Times': James Cameron Gives High Praise to Controversial Netflix Hit
Image
Netflix found a lot of success with the acclaimed movie Emilia Pérez, and its latest accolade is some pretty high praise from revered filmmaker James Cameron.

In an interview for the Ringer Movies podcast, the Titanic, Terminator 2, and Aliens director shared his thoughts on Emilia Pérez. Though Cameron must be very busy, given his continued work on multiple Avatar sequels, he still made time to give Emilia Pérez repeated viewings. The director also praised the movie for its originality, describing it as a one-of-a-kind film that just was not like any other that he'd ever seen before.

Director James Cameron reportedly resented the Dune actor for rejecting the role.

"What I saw that blew me away was Emilia Pérez. I have seen it three times now," Cameron said while discussing recent movies with veteran producer Gale Anne Hurd.

10 Underrated Sequels From Famous Franchises
Image
Since the earliest days of Hollywood, audiences have signaled a desire for some of their favorite stories to continue in the form of sequels, with franchises like Star Wars and Halloween being kept alive for decades. The idea of the sequel has always been hit or miss, with some filmmakers wanting their best stories to be left at one, while studios insist on keeping their ideas alive. Naturally, this has been reflected in the quality of some movies, which can either delight or divide audiences.

While some sequels rank among the greatest and most successful films ever made, others are among the worst. In the middle, however, audiences have a long list of underrated continuations, some of which failed to live up to a predecessor while others were quickly overshadowed by the next entry. Some of these movies simply flew under the radar or weren't appreciated for their time, but have aged incredibly well.

10 Great Sci-Fi Movies Overshadowed By Their Sequels
Image
Because of their wide-ranging, speculative nature, it is not at all uncommon for science fiction movies to inspire sequels, often more than one. The quality of these great sequels, however, has proven to be quite inconsistent. Unfortunately, many subsequent films fail to live up to the quality of the original. On the other hand, though, some sequels offer creative expansions of the worlds established by the films that inspired them, leading to great success both critically and commercially.

Sometimes, sequels are so good that they even manage to overshadow the films that came before them. While it is great that these films receive such high praise and attention, it is a shame that the wonderful films that inspired them fall by the wayside. It is crucial to remember that these were the movies that first introduced audiences to their marvelous new worlds, establishing the settings and characters that would be...

8 Movies That Would Be Amazing If Remade As Musicals
Image
Movie musicals, as well as those written for the stage, are a divisive genre that not all audiences are going to connect with, but sometimes viewers are drawn in because the story is familiar to begin with. Taking a beloved film and transforming it into a musical can be a great way for fans and newcomers to remember the original work. Additionally, knowing that a large viewer base is going into the production with a knowledge and understanding of the narrative gives the writers and directors the opportunity to take risks and create boundary-pushing song and dance numbers.

There are plenty of non-musical movies with great musical sequences that prove the diversity of stories that can hold up to the weight of songs. Altering the pacing and narrative structure to suit breaks for musical numbers can be difficult, but these projects all have enough action and tension that finding places...

10 Actors Who Are Inseparable From A Character They Played
Image
Some characters become so iconic that their actors become entirely inseparable from the part they played, as their personas and reputations become intrinsically linked. This can often be the case for an actor’s breakout role, which was so definitive that it’s difficult for audiences to picture them as anybody else, making it hard for them to pursue careers away from their most famous roles. In other instances, actors play the same character for so long, whether in movie series or TV shows, they will forever be remembered for one specific role.

Some of the best movie characters out there have become inseparable from the actors who play them, and many TV stars have to accept that their legacy will always be tied to their characters. While some actors resent being tied to one piece of media for the rest of their lives, others have fully embraced their iconic...

Promotion: How The Terminator Became A Classic – And Began Cinema’s Greatest Cyborg Saga
Image
For a film that’s 40 years old, The Terminator still feels like it’s been beamed back from the future. James Cameron’s cyborg classic has been with us for four decades now – spawning one of the biggest franchises of all time, cementing Arnold Schwarzenegger’s metal-boned machine as a cinematic icon, delivering one of the all-time-great sequels, and launching the career of the most successful filmmaker all time. Not bad. And now it looks better than ever, arriving on 4K Ultra-hd in a brand new restoration to mark that anniversary, presented in all its tech-noir glory.

While time (and technology) has moved on, The Terminator still glides like a piece of well-oiled machinery – propulsive in Cameron’s extraordinarily-skilled hand, groundbreaking in is effects and ambition, a bruising and thrilling ride from the moment Arnie’s killing machine first appears. Schwarzenegger’s performance is so totemic, the role now so inextricably linked with his image,...

Gale Anne Hurd on ‘Terminator’ 40th Anniversary: AI Was ‘Sci-fi and Fantasy’ in 1984, Now It’s ‘Front Page’ News
Image
In 1984, no one could have guessed that an independently made movie about an unstoppable cyborg assassin would become a hit, launch a still-growing franchise and, arguably, predict the future of artificial intelligence.

Producer Gale Anne Hurd and co-writer/director James Cameron realized they had a hit on their hands when it topped the box office the first weekend, because as Hurd recalled, “Orion told us it was a down-and-dirty exploitation film, that word of mouth would be so bad that we wouldn’t be in theaters after the second weekend.” How wrong they were.

Looking back 40 years later on “The Terminator,” Hurd marveled how the discussion around AI has moved from being considered “science fiction and fantasy,” to front page news and how the movie helped usher in the age of female action stars.

“The Terminator” is about the dangers of AI dominance at a time when it wasn’t very high-tech,...

'I Didn't Want Arnold in the Movie': The Terminator Director Reflects on Schwarzenegger's Casting
Image
Arnold Schwarzenegger's career is marked by a string of successful action movies. These would have excluded The Terminator if James Cameron had his way with the casting.

Orion Pictures wanted to cast Arnold Schwarzenegger as Kyle Reese in The Terminator, but the actor wasn't interested. Director James Cameron told Empire that Schwarzenegger angled to play the Terminator on their first meeting, but Cameron thought the part didn't fit. "We had talked briefly about the idea about six months before [they met Schwarzenegger], myself and [producer and co-writer] Gale [Anne Hurd], and we thought, man, maybe not. It didn't fit our vision. [Arnold's] not going to be able to disappear into a crowd. He's going to be Arnold. It's not going to work, right? So we discounted it and I went in [to the lunch] with a mindset of just ticking the box. I'm going to tick the box and come back and report that it doesn't work."

Fithian Group To Launch Digital Marketplace Connecting Indie Filmmakers And Exhibitors
Image
The Fithian Group, launched last fall by longtime NATO chief John Fithian, has developed a data-driven, digital theatrical distribution marketplace it hopes will revolutionize how independent filmmakers and rights-holders book and release movies in theaters.

An early version of the platform, called Attend, rolls out Stateside in the first quarter of 2025. The U.S. and Australia will be initial markets.

Dozens of filmmakers and producers from Sean Baker to Steven Soderbergh Patty Jenkins and Ted Hope are supporting the concept, signing on to an Attend statement “that modern, democratic, data-driven marketplace providing an efficient and effective way to distribute all genres of film directly to theatres and audiences is a vital need for our industry and art form.”

Powered by entertainment tech firm Vista Group, the marketplace allows filmmakers to upload details and materials for their films directly onto the platform. Exhibitors can search the database, and Attend recommends movies.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's The Terminator is Streaming on Prime Video in Novemeber
Image
The Terminator, James Cameron's sci-fi thriller of 1984, will be available on a new streaming service soon. The film will be added to Prime Video starting November 1, just in time for its 40th anniversary. Cameron's "official" debut in Hollywood is, without question, one of his best films, and he's extremely proud of it. Definitely more proud than he is of the 1982 horror movie Piranha II: The Spawning. The director claims he got the idea for The Terminator while on a press tour for the Piranha sequel, an experience he's always labeled as traumatic. Cameron got sick and, during a fever dream, he saw an image that would be imprinted on his mind until he was able to make The Terminator.

The movie follows Sarah Connor, a waitress in Los Angeles who gets hunted by a mysterious stranger with super strength. This stranger is an android sent back in time from...

Michael Keaton, David Letterman, Mel Brooks and More Mourn Teri Garr: “So Talented and So Funny”
Image
Michael Keaton, Paul Feig and David Letterman are among the Hollywood figures paying tribute to Teri Garr after she died on Tuesday at 79.

The Oscar-nominated actress was known for films like Tootsie and Young Frankenstein, among many others, before her career was derailed by multiple sclerosis, which she revealed she was diagnosed during an appearance on Larry King’s CNN show in October 2002. She appeared onscreen for the last time in 2011.

Garr died at home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family and friends,” her publicist, Heidi Schaffer, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Mel Brooks, who gave Garr her breakthrough role alongside Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein, paid tribute to the actress. “So very sorry to hear about Teri Garr’s passing,” he wrote on X. “She was so talented and so funny. Her humor and lively spirit made the Young Frankenstein set a pleasure to work on. Her ‘German’ accent had us all in stitches!

40 Years Ago, James Cameron's First Sci-Fi Classic Was A Surprise Box Office Smash
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

James Cameron is the unquestioned king of the box office. "Avatar" is, by a considerable margin, the highest-grossing movie of all time and, before all's said and done, it could be the only movie in history to touch $3 billion worldwide. Cameron also owns two of the other spots in the top four globally with "Avatar: The Way of Water" and "Titanic." He's been doing it on the biggest scale for a long, long time. But it certainly didn't start out that way. Early on, the blockbuster maestro was simply looking for a way to meaningfully break into Hollywood.

"My contemporaries were all doing slasher-horror movies. John Carpenter was the guy I idolized the most," Cameron once admitted (per Den of Geek). "He...

The Terminator: Did You Know James Cameron Sold the Rights for Just $1 to Direct It?

James Cameron Sold the Rights for Just $1 to Direct It (Photo Credit – Koimoi)

Long before Titanic had us reaching for tissues and Avatar changed the game, James Cameron wasn’t what he is now. In the early ’80s, he was a scrappy Canadian filmmaker with a bonkers idea about time-traveling killer robots. Spoiler alert: that idea turned into The Terminator. But the real kicker? Cameron had to sell the rights for just one dollar to make it happen. One. Buck.

James Cameron: A Dollar for a Dream

So why would anyone sell the rights to a movie for the price of a gas station coffee? Because Cameron bet on himself. He wanted to direct so severely that he made a deal with producer Gale Anne Hurd: the rights to The Terminator in exchange for his shot behind the camera. At the time, his directing resume was… questionable. The only...

No, Thank You: The Decision That Saved The Walking Dead Created The Show As We Know It
Image
The Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd made a decision that saved the series and helped it become a phenomenon. Before working as a producer on the television adaptation of Robert Kirkman's popular The Walking Dead comics, the veteran producer already had a prolific career in entertainment. Hurd produced several iconic science-fiction movies, including The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Aliens, along with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's second movie, The Incredible Hulk.

After helping these science-fiction and superhero stories become a reality, she got involved in helping The Walking Dead television series take shape, which included finding the right network for it. Hurd was determined to do justice to Kirkman's comics and his creative vision and was not willing to compromise on this, regardless of what network executives offered. Two major television networks were interested in making The Walking Dead, but Hurd turned them down both. The...
