“A Trauma-Bond-Com”: ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ Sequel Gets a Plot Update From Director
Image
Thanks to director Gil Junger, we’re getting our first real heap of intel surrounding the upcoming 10 Things I Hate About Youfollow up, and it sounds … incredibly unhealthy. Recently speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker, who helmed the iconic Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles-led original film, teased the new project, which is titled 10 Things I Hate About Dating. Although the “vibe” will be the same, Junger said that the storyline will veer off from the movie that came before it and will, instead of taking on a William Shakespeare classic as the 1999 movie did, modernize Molière’s 1666 play, The Misanthrope. But it’s the description of “not a rom-com,” but “a trauma-bond com” that has our eyebrows raised about the film’s content and overall message.

Walking us through Mollière’s piece, Junger explained it as, “a play about someone who is repulsed by high society and glamor and...

Over 25 Years Later, a Cult Classic Teen Comedy (Starring a Beloved Joker Actor) Could Be Getting a New Sequel Trilogy
Image
The director of the 1999 teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About Youis developing a sequel trilogy, more than a quarter of a century after the film starring the late Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles premiered. Per People, Gil Junger, who directed the original film, is working on a follow-up titled 10 Things I Hate About Dating, along with the original movie’s producer, Andrew Lazar.

It doesn’t end there, as Junger is proposing that 10 Things I Hate About Dating is just the first film in a sequel trilogy to the movie that also starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, and Gabrielle Union. Junger is reportedly penning the script for the first film with Naya Elle James. Junger’s planned trilogy also includes two more titles called 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids.

'10 Things I Hate About You' Sequel & Potential Trilogy In The Works
Image
"How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways?" That's the tagline featured on many of the posters for the 1999 teen classic,10 Things I Hate About You. Based on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," the film was a fun balance of the playwright's sensibilities and the teen movie boom that exploded during the late 90s. It's one of the best-received films of its kind from that era and is still beloved today, which could be why the film's director, Gil Junger, is confident that a sequel will be successful. In fact, he has ideas that will go beyond making just one follow-up.

During a chat with People, Junger revealed that he is working on a follow-up to 10 Things I Hate About You and is penning the script with Naye Elle James. The director also says that the film's original producer, Andrew Lazar, is on board,...

10 Things I Hate About You: The film’s director is developing a sequel trilogy, which will also feature a nod to Heath Ledger
Andrew Keegan, Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Gabrielle Union, Susan May Pratt, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Krumholtz, and Larisa Oleynik in 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
The 1999 high school comedy, 10 Things I Hate About You, helped usher in Heath Ledger as a new breakout star on American shores. The movie was a modern day retelling of the Shakespeare play The Taming of the Shrew and featured an ensemble cast that also included Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, Andrew Keegan, Allison Janney and Larry Miller. The teen romance film would also become a hit as it opened second at the box office (having gone up against The Matrix) and grossed over $50 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. It would also spawn a TV show adaptation on ABC Family in 2009. Deadline is reporting that the director of the original film, Gil Junger, is now planning to make a sequel trilogy to the 1999 comedy.

The sequel trilogy will also have a nod to the late star, Heath Ledger, who played the school’s rebellious student, Patrick Verona.

A sequel trilogy to '10 Things I Hate About You' is in the works.Director Gil Junger - who helmed the original 1999 teen romantic comedy - is co-writing a script with Naya Elle James titled '10 Things I Hate About Dating', and the movie would be the first in a set of three, with the others titled '10 Things I Hate About Marriage' and '10 Things I Hate About Kids'.The movie hasn't yet been greenlit but the 70-year-old filmmaker teased he, Naya and original producer Andrew Lazar have "some pretty good ideas".He added to People magazine: "'10 Things I Hate About Dating' is definitively in the works as a feature film. ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ Director Plans Sequel Trilogy With Nod To Heath Ledger: “He Deserves To Be Loved”
Image
Gil Junger, the director of 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), is planning a sequel trilogy with a nod to Heath Ledger.

The teen romantic comedy in which Ledger starred alongside Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik became a cult classic, and Junger wants to revisit its universe.

In a new interview, the filmmaker revealed he is co-writing a script alongside Naya Elle James that they have titled 10 Things I Hate About Dating. The film would be the first of three with subsequent installments titled 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids.

Although the film has not been greenlit, Junger tells People the sequel “is definitely in the works as a feature film. We’re developing it right now.”

10 Things I Hate About You is a modern retelling of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Junger says Molière’s The Misanthrope would inspire his follow-up film.

Julia Stiles Looks Back on Filming Iconic Poem Scene in ’10 Things I Hate About You’
Image
Julia Stiles’ recital of that emotional poem in 10 Things I Hate About You may have cued the waterworks, but she admits it was never supposed to be that emotional in the first place.

In an interview with Bustle released Wednesday, the actress and director of Wish You Were Here reflected on her breakout role as Kat Stratford in the teen rom-com in which she and Heath Ledger’s Patrick Verona fall in love. In one scene in particular, Stiles’ Kat recites an emotional poem to Ledger’s Patrick in which she expresses her heartbreak and feelings for him as she offers 10 things she “hates” about him.

“In the table read with the whole cast, I kind of just read it without any emotion and I do remember the director saying, ‘She’ll be more emotional next time,’ so maybe that sunk in,” Stiles recalled of the poem scene.

Despite tears not being scripted,...

Julia Stiles Reflects on Heath Ledger in '10 Things I Hate About You'
Image
10 Things I Hate About You star Julia Stiles remembers working with the late actor Heath Ledger on the teen comedy that would change the lives of all the young performers who worked in the film. Decades after they played Kat Stratford and Patrick Verona, Stiles recalls the "energy and passion" of the performer who sadly passed away in 2008 after an accidental drug overdose.

As reported by CinemaBlend, Stiles appeared as a guest on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, and spent some of her time reflecting on co-starring with Heath Ledger in the film. Stiles and Ledger played Kat and Verona, respectively, and the couple ultimately became one of the iconic duos in the '90s teen comedy sub-genre. Here's what Stiles had to say about working with the actor who eventually won the posthumous Oscar for his role as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight...

The 10 Best Movies Like 10 Things I Hate About You
Image
When "10 Things I Hate About You" was released in 1999, it featured a cast of swoon-worthy young stars. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who wasn't sold on the movie at first), Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Larisa Oleynik were the film's core four, but the supporting cast was rounded out by actors like Gabrielle Union, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, and Allison Janney, and everyone delivers a fun performance. The contemporary movie is actually an adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic play "The Taming of the Shrew," setting the romantic comedy at a modern high school instead of the olden days. It's about a pretty girl named Bianca (Oleynik) who isn't allowed to date until her uptight older sister Kat (Stiles) is taken; as a result, Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) pays the rambunctious Patrick (Ledger) to woo Kat. Hijinks ensue.

If you're a fan of the classic teen comedy, but you're getting tired of rewatching Kat recite the titular poem,...

10 Things I Hate About You Almost Got A Very Dark Sequel (& I'm So Glad It Didn't)
Image
Mentions of suicide.

10 Things I Hate About You is one of the most popular and beloved teen movies and rom-coms of the 1990s, and though it told a complete story, it almost got a very dark sequel that Im glad never happened. Teen comedies and rom-coms went through a great run in the 1990s and early 2000s, and among the best is 10 Things I Hate About You. Directed by Gil Junger, 10 Things I Hate About You is a modern take on William Shakespeares comedy The Taming of the Shrew, set in an American high school in 1999.

10 Things I Hate About You follows new student Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who, after learning that his crush, Bianca (Larisa Oleynik), cant date anyone unless her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) does, comes up with an elaborate plan with his friend: trick arrogant but wealthy senior Joey (Andrew Keegan) into paying...

Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles Reinvented Shakespeare Before Anyone But You
Image
Anyone But You revives rom-coms with nods to Shakespeare, just like 10 Things I Hate About You did 25 years before. 10 Things I Hate About You modernizes Shakespeare's themes, giving Kat more agency and respect while removing misogynistic undertones. The clever screenplay of 10 Things I Hate About You stands out among teen comedies, becoming a timeless classic.

The recently released Anyone But You not only helped revive romantic comedies in the theatrical landscape, but it also looked to the work of William Shakespeare for inspiration in a way that used to make it clear that the 16th-century English playwright had his finger on the pulse of the human condition that would prove to be timeless. Much Ado About Nothing serves as the blueprint for the Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell-led rom-com, but it's not the first film of this nature to use one of Shakespeare's plays to spin...

10 Things I Hate About You Star Responds to Rumors He Started a Cult
Image
10 Things I Hate About You star Andrew Keegan denies starting a cult called Full Circle, calling it a "cool community center." Full Circle was created as a positive initiative to do good things for the Venice Beach community. Keegan believes that a Vice article about Full Circle sparked the speculation that it was a cult, but he sees being called a cult leader as a badge of honor.

10 Things I Hate About You actor Andrew Keegan has addressed rumors that he started a cult back in 2014. During a recent appearance on Pod Meets World, Keegan denied the allegation to co-hosts Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong and Will Friedle, calling the group, Full Circle, a "cool community center." Former teen star Andrew Keegan denies being a cult leader
Image
Andrew Keegan was one of the many mid-tier teeny-bopper heartthrobs of the 1990s, with roles in Camp Nowhere, sitcom Thunder Alley and, near the end of his popularity in the decade, a smaller role in 10 Things I Hate About You, not to mention spots on quintessential ‘90s TV like Full House, Step by Step and Boy Meets World. The dude had his fans to be sure, but a cult following is taking it a little too far…

Andrew Keegan’s career shift was inevitable – you don’t stay a Tiger Beat cover boy forever – but when it was believed that he was leading a cult in his 30s, no one could have predicted that. On a recent episode of Pod Meets World, the gang asked Andrew Keegan about the rumors circulating that he had launched a cult in California in the mid-2010s. “You mean when I woke up...

Andrew Keegan Addresses Rumors That He Runs a Cult, Admits He’s Spent ‘Tens of Thousands of Dollars’ on Spiritual Group
Image
On the “Pod Meets World” podcast, co-hosts Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong and Will Friedle have often given their guests — many of whom are actors who grew up on TV in the 90s — the opportunity to debunk any headlines about them.

During the Feb. 12 episode, Andrew Keegan was ready to do just that.

“You mean when I woke up one day and I was anointed a cult leader?” he asked with a laugh during the iHeart podcast. Keegan, best known for his roles in “10 Things I Hate About You,” “7th Heaven,” “Party of Five” and for being a “heartthrob” in the early aughts, went on to explain that he moved to Venice Beach in his early 20s, and “got immersed in the culture and the community.”

5 things we love about ‘10 things I hate about you’
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Flix FlashbackIn #WatchWithTNM, we write about the '90s romcom and why it's still charming despite being problematic as hell.Ragamalika KarthikeyanGrowing up, I’ve watched 10 things I hate about you perhaps one time too many. I loved the film – it has some easy pop-feminism, some great characters, and some brilliant actors, so what’s not to like, right? But does the film age well? Would I like it if I watched it again now? The film is a high school romcom from 1999, directed by Gil Jugner. The premise is weird: a new kid in school (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is smitten by a pretty girl, but the girl is only allowed to date if/when her older sister does. And so, the boy and his friend devise an elaborate plan to get the older sister to go out with a guy. We have to remember that all this is happening in America – if this was India,...

She have beer-flavored nipples?” Well, Brandon is the Bianca of “The Bachelor Presents: Listen to Your Heart.”

Everyone wants a piece of Brandon, including two new contestants who join the show in Monday’s episode. Well, get in line, ladies. The ex-Marine, who received a rose from Savannah in the series premiere, is well aware of his bevy of suitors. “I’m still on the fence with some of these women,” Brandon tells Savannah in a sneak peek via “People” (watch below). “It’s hard for me to have a deep,...

Remember When Prince William Was a Superhot Teen Idol?
Prince William of Wales
Want to feel old? If you were born in the '80s, you probably remember pining over Prince William, who's now 37, while you were growing up. In fact, William usually stole the show during outings with his younger brother, Prince Harry. Since William has been in most of our lives for quite some time now, we will always have a soft spot for the prince. Being a doting dad and loving husband definitely looks good on him, but we'll never forget his heartthrob days. Let's look back on them now!

Here's What to Know About The Bachelorette's Fan Favorite, Jason Tartick

He's been compared to Al Pacino circa The Godfather, Andrew Keegan circa the '90s, and Michael Scott of The Office, but when it comes down to it, The Bachelorette's Jason Tartick is in a league of his own. The 29-year-old corporate banker from Buffalo, NY, showed up this season somewhat under the radar, but over the final few weeks of his time on the show, he quickly soared to "fan favorite" status for his sincerity, sweetness, and down-to-earth nature. (That whole trying-to-stifle-laughter thing during Jordan Kimball and David Ravitz's dramatically hilarious showdown also helped endear him to Bachelor Nation.)

To help you learn more about the contestant, who is a Bachelor frontrunner after being sent home by Becca in the third-to-last episode, we've done a little digging. Here are five things you might not have known about Tartick that'll make you like him even...

The Internet Officially Has a Crush on Jason From 'The Bachelorette'
It's official. Jason Tartick was rarely seen on the first two episodes of The Bachelorette — but the banker competing for Becca Kufrin's final rose has officially become the Internet's crush. The 29-year-old stole the spotlight on the reality dating competition as he sat in the middle of male model Jordan and chicken guy David's petty fighting — and Tbh, he was every girl watching the scene unfold on TV. "I have a crush on Jason. I want someone who also thinks things are hilarious and has to cover their face with a pillow from laughing too much," one viewer tweeted before another added, "Wills and Jason are literally me when one if my siblings is getting schooled by my parents." A third chimed in, "Becca isn't the only one who has a crush on @Jason_Tartick. "That was fucking awesome!" @Jason_Tartick for Bachelor...

'Smallville' Star Allison Mack Proudly Takes Credit for the Idea of Branding Women in the Nxivm Sex Cult
Actress Allison Mack — best known for playing Clark Kent's friend Chloe Sullivan on the TV show Smallville — has made headlines recently for her involvement in an alleged sex cult masquerading as a self-help group called Nxivm. The group, founded by a man named Keith Raniere, was first exposed in a New York Times feature last year. But then, Frank Parlato, a former spokesman for Nxivm, claimed in his blog that Allison was second in command. In fact, he stated that she’s been running a sorority within the cult called Dos, that brands women, presides over them like they’re slaves, and recruits top performers for Keith’s harem! Believe it or not, Allison admitted to the branding, and even took credit for the horrifying idea! Keep reading for more info on the 35-year-old's life now. (Photo Credit: The CW) Where is Allison from? She was born to American parents in West Germany,...

Allison Mack Isn't the Only Hollywood Star to Join a Cult — These Other Celebs Are Members Too
As more revelations emerge about former Smallville actress-turned-sex-cult member Allison Mack, including her role in allegedly recruiting female sex slaves for the bizarre Nxvim (pronounced Nex-ee-um) cult leader Keith Raniere, bigger questions are raised concerning how the popular actress got involved with a cult at all. After her arrest, it was reported that the 35-year-old actress not only recruited members for Raniere to have sex with, but she also blackmailed them with compromising pictures, and helped hold them down and brand them with a symbol that was a mix of Mack's and Raniere's initials. Raniere and Mack's trial is set to begin October 1, and if they're convicted, they will face 15 years in prison, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Why do celebrities get involved in cults? Mack is certainly not the only Hollywood celeb who is a cult member, but she is among those who joined cults voluntarily as adults. "I...

Using "busted" and "arrested" interchangeably isn't grounds for defamation liability, at least when the writer is paraphrasing the reporting of a reputable source, according to a recent decision from a California appeals court.

Examiner.com has beat a lawsuit from Andrew Keegan over a 2015 story that said the actor was arrested for selling alcoholic kombucha without a permit. The 2nd District Court of Appeals on Nov. 29 upheld a decision to dismiss the complaint under the state's anti-slapp statute.

Keegan sued Examiner and its parent company Anschutz Entertainment for defamation in Sept. 2015, alleging he was not at the church...

Sleeping Beauty (1959)
On this day in pop culture history: Disney’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ premiered
Sleeping Beauty (1959)
57 years ago today, Disney’s Sleeping Beauty premiered at the Fox Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles. It was the last film based on a fairy tale that the House of Mouse made for over 30 years, until 1989’s The Little Mermaid, since Sleeping Beauty underperformed at the box office, leading to massive layoffs at Disney. The successful release of 101 Dalmatians in 1961 ended up saving Disney Animation. Though Sleeping Beauty wasn’t a hit at its debut, the film’s become a beloved Disney classic, with Aurora in her pink dress (you win, Flora) prominent among the lineup of Disney princesses, and with Maleficent now an iconic animated villain. Maleficent got her own movie starring Angelina Jolie in 2014. Other notable January 29 happenings in pop culture history: • 1845: Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven was first published in the New York Evening Mirror. • 1942: BBC Radio first aired “Desert Island Discs.” Still on the air today,...
