A Scripted Digital Boom Is Finally Here— And This Time, It’s Real

Who Am I?

My name is Scott Brown, founder and CEO of Second Rodeo, and I have been telling stories on YouTube since it was a dating site. For the past 15 years, I have built my career, serving as a producer, writer and director for some of the biggest names in the industry. I’ve crashed a train with MrBeast, launched The Rock’s YouTube channel, and directed an Emmy-nominated series with Larry King. But through all the stunts, shows, and subscribers, I’ve been waiting for one thing to finally break through online: scripted storytelling.

That moment has arrived.

But let’s take a look at how we got here.

Your Web TV History Lesson

Half of you may not remember Web TV but I certainly do–the halcyon days of 2008. Simpler times. I had just graduated from USC with a degree in screenwriting. Just in time for the writer’s strike that year.

Michael Madsen Regretted Starring In A Major Kevin Costner Flop
Image
Late character actor Michael Madsen's filmography is as varied as it is vast, with well over 300 acting credits to his name. Madsen brought a special something to every role, an edge of danger lurking behind his ice blue eyes, and it served him especially well in Westerns. Two of Madsen's very best performances are in Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" and "Kill Bill Vol. 2," which are Westerns/Western-adjacent, but there was one film in the Wild West he regretted starring in that turned out to be an absolute flop.

In an interview with The Guardian in 2004, Madsen shared the complicated choice he had to make when he decided to star as Virgil Earp, brother of the titular Wyatt (Kevin Costner) in the 1994 movie "Wyatt Earp." Ultimately, it came between him working with Tarantino once more in the director's second film, "Pulp Fiction," or starring in "Wyatt Earp,...

Universal Once Fired Clint Eastwood & Burt Reynolds For The Weirdest Reasons
Image
Believe it or not, back when Clint Eastwood convinced Burt Reynolds to star in one of his worst Westerns, the two were actually friends. It seems there was some confusion over Eastwood's suggestion that Reynolds star in a Spaghetti Western of the type that had made him a big name. This resulted in a regrettable role for Reynolds as a Native American in "Navajo Joe," a movie that the actor openly criticized for the remainder of his life. Despite all this, Eastwood and Reynolds had been friends prior to "Navajo Joe" and remained friends in the years that came after, even working together on an equally unfortunate film that brought the pair together at the height of their powers yet failed to live up to such a billing.

In 1984, Eastwood and Reynolds starred in "City Heat," a forgotten gangster movie that Roger Ebert absolutely hated, enough so as to label it a "travesty.

The Clint Eastwood Thriller That President Bill Clinton Adored
Image
In between looking after the well-being of the nation and forging strong relationships overseas, the President of the United States sometimes finds a few spare hours to catch a flick. Luckily, they don't need to catch a motorcade down to the local multiplex and queue up like the rest of us. Instead, there is a small movie theater in the East Wing of White House where the President can enjoy a movie with his family and guests. Harry Truman was a fan of "My Darling Clementine" while John F. Kennedy preferred the adventures of James Bond in "Dr. No." More recently, Bill Clinton loved "High Noon" so much that he screened the classic Western 20 times during his residency at the White House. He also had some very positive things to say about another more contemporary movie directly related to his day job: Wolfgang Petersen's "In the Line of Fire.

Ben Stiller Explains Why This Was the Right Time to Revisit ‘Meet the Parents’: “Life Informs Everything”
Image
Casting for Meet the Parents 4 is well underway, with Owen Wilson the latest star to rejoin the franchise with Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro and Teri Polo in the upcoming film that also has Ariana Grande on board.

But why was this the right time to revisit Meet the Parents? Stiller explained after a recent 25th anniversary screening of the original film at the 2025 Tribeca Festival.

“I think what spurred the idea was that at this point in time, I’m the age that Bob [De Niro] was when we did the first movie,” he said. “And there was this sort of mirror to the first film in terms of the fact that my kids are grown. And, yeah, that my kid, one of my kids, is thinking about introducing his person to the family.”

Stiller, De Niro and Polo, who reunited with original director Jay Roach, who’s set to produce the fourth film,...

Clint Eastwood's 96% Rotten Tomatoes Political Thriller Is Streaming for Free This Fourth of July
Image
If you feel like watching a political thriller this Independence Day, Pluto TV has you covered — and they'll even let you stream it for free. In the Line of Fire, the critically acclaimed 1993 movie starring Clint Eastwood as a Secret Service agent and John Malkovich as a would-be presidential assassin, is coming to the Fast streamer starting on July 1.

The movie was the brainchild of producer Jeff Apple (The Recruit), who was inspired by a childhood memory of seeing Lyndon Johnson surrounded by Secret Service agents. Apple commissioned writer Jeff Maguire (Escape to Victory) to pen the script, which was eventually directed by Das Boot's Wolfgang Petersen, who would tackle Presidential action again a few years later in Air Force One. The movie was one of the first to use digital effects: footage of Eastwood from the 1960s was digitized and inserted into old news footage to depict his character's early career.

Eminem Wanted Mariah Carey, Who Is Only Four Years Older, to Play His Mom in 8 Mile
Image
The mostly one-sided feud between Eminem and Mariah Carey, which centered on their alleged romantic relationship in the 2000s, has a bizarre new chapter. A former producer for Carey has claimed Eminem once pitched her on the role of his mother in 8 Mile — despite her only being four years his senior.

Damion “Damizza” Young, who collaborated with Carey on “I Still Believe” and “Crybaby,” told the story during a recent episode of the Tfu Podcast. According to Young, he had been advising Carey against doing the movie Glitter when he received a call from Eminem’s team about setting up a meeting between the two artists.

“They said, ‘He’s got this movie called 8 Mile and he wants her to be in the movie,” Young recalled. Though he was hesitant to get “in the middle,” he passed along the opportunity to Carey, who was initially uninterested.

Frederick Forsyth, Author of Thrillers Made Into Movies Like ‘The Day of the Jackal,’ Dies at 86
Image
Frederick Forsyth, a British author of thrillers who frequently made the bestseller lists, sold 70 million books and saw his novels “The Day of the Jackal,” “The Odessa File” and “The Dogs of War,” among others, adapted into films, died on Monday at his home in Jordans, England. He was 86 years old. The New York Times confirmed Forsyth’s death, which his literary representative, Jonathan Lloyd, said “followed a short illness.”

“The Day of the Jackal” was adapted into a 1973 film directed by Fred Zinnemann and starring Edward Fox and Michael Lonsdale. Fox played the professional assassin known only as the “Jackal” who is hired to assassinate French President Charles de Gaulle in the summer of 1963. The film was a critical and box office success, and was also turned into a series in 2024 starring Eddie Redmayne.

Roger Ebert said of the feature version: “I wasn’t prepared for how good it...

These Were Norm Macdonald’s Funniest Answers (and Jokes) on ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’
Image
In the year 2000, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was the biggest game show on TV. Like all popular game shows, it wouldn’t be long until they cranked out a celebrity edition of the show. In fact, it debuted that same year. For Celebrity Millionaire’s second week, the contestants were a truly eclectic group — a group that included Tyra Banks, Vivica A. Fox, Alec Baldwin, Charlie Sheen and disgraced rapper P. Diddy. There were also a host of comedians, the most memorable of which was Norm Macdonald, who was the very last to compete for his charity.

It was worth the wait, however, as Macdonald cranked out a number of hilarious zingers during his short stint on the show. Here are his 10 funniest jokes and answers…

10 “You know, if this was me I would keep going, but there’s children… Give me that $100!”

CNN Bets More of Kaitlan Collins’ White House News Hustle Can Power ‘The Source’
Image
By day, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins wears out shoe leather at the White House, trying to get the latest details on any number of eyebrow-raising policies coming out of the Trump administration. By night, she holds forth from a shiny Washington studio, far from the fray.

CNN hopes to inject a little of the reporter’s daytime routine into her nighttime one.

Collins is expected to leave her studio perch and host her 9 p.m. program, “The Source,” from the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet’s Washington, D.C., newsroom, a move that could take place as soon as Tuesday evening. The hope is that the change in setting will give viewers a more kinetic presentation that reminds them of Collins’ unique place at the network — it is rare for someone assigned to a busy news beat, in this case that of chief White House correspondent, to also have responsibility...

Jimmy Kimmel Throws Back to His 2007 Interview With Trump in Honor of First 100 Days in Office | Video

Jimmy Kimmel commemorated Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office in a way only he can: by showing off a 2007 interview of the now president. Being continuously on the air since 2003 has its perks.

On Monday night, Kimmel reflected on how much Trump has changed over the years, noting that the Republican president used to be a Democrat who was best known to the average American as a reality host for NBC. “Back in 2007, we had a very orange show on Jan. 16. Our guest lineup was Donald Trump and Carrot Top,” Kimmel revealed. The late night host then cut to a nearly two decade old interview that took place back when Trump was the host of the “Celebrity Apprentice.”

“There we are chatting, friendly. Neither one of us had any clue of what was to come,” Kimmel said. “And what a handsome idiot I was too, looking back all those years.

However, Harmon and series creator Don Bellisario formed a rapport during their first meeting. Despite bringing Harmon onto the show, it wasn’t an immediate hit with its ratings.

The series began with ratings that were only enough to keep it running for more seasons. This wasn’t the situation a few years later, when the show began to top the ratings chart. Harmon revealed one thing about these initial few seasons that might actually explain its ratings.

The Tom Hanks Classic That Dennis Quaid Regrets Turning Down
Image
Penny Marshall's 1988 comedy smash-hit "Big" had a fun, fantastical premise. A 12-year-old boy named Josh (David Moscow) is tired of being treated like a kid, feeling that the world condescends to people of his age group all too often. Despondent, Josh visits a carnival and finds a coin-operated fortune-teller/wish-granting machine called Zoltar. He inserts his money and wishes to be "big," only to awaken the morning after in the body of Tom Hanks, who was 32 at the time. Suddenly 20 years older, Josh flees his panicked mother (Mercedes Ruehl), who doesn't recognize him, and is forced to enter the adult work force to survive. The only person who knows his secret is his best friend Billy (Jared Rushton).

"Big" was a tour de force from everyone involved in its making and went on to be nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Actor (for Hanks) and Best Original Screenplay...

Dennis Quaid Knows Why Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp Flopped
Image
Dennis Quaid is the movie star who inexplicably never was. The Houston-born hellraiser with the devil-may-care grin flashed palpable leading man potential with his portrayal of the former star quarterback who finds a measure of redemption astride a bicycle in Peter Yates' wonderful coming-of-age sports flick "Breaking Away." This potential turned into a veritable guarantee of future A-list dominance when he swaggered his way through "The Right Stuff" as Project Mercury astronaut Gordon Cooper. Who's the best actor you ever saw? You might just be looking at him.

Quaid was almost always great, but the films that were supposed to launch him to superstardom kept underperforming. Wolfgang Petersen's "Enemy Mine," an underrated sci-fi riff on "The Defiant Ones," was horribly mis-marketed by 20th Century Fox, Joe Dante's brilliant "Innerspace" got hung out to dry by Warner Bros. over the 1987 July 4th holiday, and Jim McBride's wild-sexy New Orleans noir "The Big Easy,...

Upon Charlie Sheen’s dramatic firing from Two and a Half Men, many felt the sitcom was as good as over. But as the story goes, Chuck Lorre and the crew bounced back by bringing in Walden Schmidt as Harper’s replacement. Although Ashton Kutcher did prove to be a good match for Jon Cryer’s Alan, the show never reached its previous heights post-Sheen’s exclusion.

Rosie O’Donnell Wrote a New Stand-Up Special Purely to Spite Ellen DeGeneres

While her Koosh ball-firing days may be behind her, Rosie O’Donnell seems to be quite busy lately. In addition to joining the cast of the Sex and the City spin-off And Just Like That…, she has reportedly written a new hour of stand-up material for a forthcoming comedy special. Why? To make Ellen DeGeneres look even worse than she already does.

According to In Touch Weekly, the same journalistic outlet that just cracked the case of Jessica Simpson’s weight loss, O’Donnell is “secretly finalizing a deal” for a new comedy special and is “vowing to outshine her longtime rival” Ellen DeGeneres. The outlet spoke with an anonymous insider who claims that O'Donnell's new hour will be “a lot like Ellen’s special, except it’s funny!”

Over the years, a lot of heroes and villains have debuted in the Marvel Universe with their own unique names and identities that could either leave fans hilariously baffled or immensely intrigued. But, of all time, ‘Mosquito Man’ was never a name fans heard of, as the late legendary mastermind Stan Lee changed his mind about him.

Turns out, this said character instead debuted as the fan-beloved friendly neighborhood superhero that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield became so famous for bringing to life for years: Spider-Man. This is because his original concept was more inspired by insects. But while that was that, the truth is that the respective character was actually rejected at first!

Yes, the WWE star’s cringe-inducing sex scene left Bella so scared she admitted she “couldn’t masturbate” after seeing it.

Back in 2015, Cena flexed his acting chops in Trainwreck, starring alongside Amy Schumer in the Judd Apatow rom-com. He played Steven, a gym-obsessed boyfriend who was just… not it. Cue the now-infamous bedroom scene, which Cena revealed wasn’t even scripted the way it turned out. On Larry King Now, he spilled, “We got into the room and started to ad-lib.” Apparently, Schumer and Apatow were all for ditching the planned physical humor and cranking up the awkward. Mission accomplished.

But for Bella? It was way too much. In a 2018 episode of Total Bellas, she let it all out, saying, “Imagine watching your man do a sex scene and have the whole world see his big butt.

President Jimmy Carter, My Father, and Me

I used to hate Jimmy Carter more than anything else in this world.

Let me explain.

It’s November 1979 in Oak Harbor, Washington, and I’m counting days. 24, 23, 22. I’m in the eighth grade. After school, I fold and then deliver the Seattle Times on Whidbey Island, the second-largest island in the continental United States as our teachers like to remind us. I am counting days until I fly from Seattle to Honolulu to meet my dad, Commander Peter Rodrick, and ride back to San Diego with him on the USS Kitty Hawk.

Image

Media entrepreneur and legal expert Dan Abrams will stop hosting his one-hour NewsNation program in February.

The announcement was made at the end of Thursday’s broadcast, during which Abrams said he appreciated the three years he got to spend with the Nexstar Media Group-owned cable news upstart.

“Creating this one hour of television every night takes many hours each day. I take every word, every tease, every guest, every on-screen graphic personally — there is no such thing as mailing it in for any of us, including me,” Abrams said. “Three years after this…really kind of unexpected opportunity, I have reached the point where it is just impossible to keep devoting the time needed for this show while also running and growing my other businesses.”

Those other businesses include Mediaite, the news and political affairs recap website that is best known for reappropriating viral cable news clips,...

The Music Legend Who Keeps Refusing To Cameo In The Simpsons
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Bruce Springsteen on "The Simpsons"? Not yet, and if history holds, not anytime soon. The show has tried to get him as a guest star in many different episodes. There are apparently many Boss fans on the show's staff; voice actor Hank Azaria even has a Springsteen tribute band, "Hank Azaria & the Ez Street Band." Yet, Springsteen has turned down each and every offer.

It might be due to the bad experience the first time the show's creatives asked him. In a 1998 TV Guide interview, "Simpsons" writer Jay Kogen said he saw Springsteen by chance, so he went up and asked him to appear on the series. "He thought I was a maniac. We never heard from him," Kogen recalled.

The Springsteen "Simpsons" cameos that weren't meant to be include:

In "One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish," Homer listens to a Bible on tape.

10 ‘SNL’ Characters Who Definitely Aren’t Coming Back for the 50th Anniversary Season
Image
As Saturday Night Live prepares for the comedy birthday party to end all comedy birthday parties, expect plenty of classic characters to get their encore flowers. Maybe Wayne and Garth will get in one last schwing! Stefon might reignite his love affair with Seth Meyers. Eddie Murphy could break out Mr. Robinson or Gumby.

But thanks to evolving cultural norms around comedy, these 10 SNL characters are virtually guaranteed not to get an invite to the festivities. Sorry, Merv the Perv, you’re not on the list.

1 Pat

Pat was Julia Sweeney’s signature SNL character, showing up 12 times to repeat the same tired joke: No one could tell if the androgynous character was a man or a woman. Playing gender identity for laughs isn’t cool — and it doesn’t help that whiny, whinging Pat was insufferable.

Image
Looking back at Micheal Jackson’s plastic surgeries (Photo Credit – Instagram)

For years, fans watched the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, ’s appearance undergo dramatic changes. Despite the visible alterations, the singer publicly acknowledged only two nose surgeries and attributed his increasingly lighter skin to vitiligo. However, that wasn’t all. A Los Angeles surgeon, Dr. Wallace Goodstein, who worked alongside one of Jackson’s surges, once revealed that the star was a regular patient.

Goodstein said, “He had multiple surgeries. He came in approximately every two months. It was about 10 to 12 surgeries in two years while I was there.” As per the doctor, Jackson underwent multiple nose jobs, had a cleft put in his chin, and had cheek implants. Not only this, the late singer also had eyelid surgery.

While Jackson tried to hide his cosmetic surgery from the public, another source revealed to People that he always wanted to do these operations clandestinely.
