In the early 1990s, the programming wizards at NBC realized they might be leaving advertising dollars on the table by not providing adolescents a Saturday morning entertainment bridge from cartoons to live-action sitcoms that reflected, in that garish sitcom way, their middle to high school lives. The only serious counter-programming threat in these hours was "Yo, MTV Raps!," so for kids who were more into bubblegum pop than hard-hitting rhymes, there was a demand not being met. And thus the Tnbc block was born.
The linchpin of the Tnbc block early in its heyday was "Saved by the Bell." What began as a spinoff of "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" -- which started on NBC before moving to The Disney Channel -- became a Saturday morning mainstay for both kids looking to do a whole lot of nothing on their morning off from school and hungover adults who knew better but...

The great guest stars continue running to Walker! In the past few weeks, Jared Padalecki‘s Texas Ranger drama has welcomed the returns of Matt Barr and his fellow Walker: Independence costar Justin Johnson Cortez, who has been heating up Austin as Det. Luna. And now, the CW hit that had better be renewed is about to get a visit from some major TV royalty. TV Insider has learned exclusively that SAG award-winning and Emmy-nominated actress Sharon Lawrence (from the equally Western-tinged Joe Picket) is set to debut in the May 22 episode, “Witt’s End,” as a barrel raced-turned-crime boss named Joanna. Described as “a killer in Wranglers,” the only thing that surpasses the villain’s “greedy grit and tenacity is her vendetta against those that have wronged her.” Who that may be remains a mystery, but we’re betting it’s someone with in the Walker camp—especially...

Voyager broke a Star Trek rule by depicting the original Amelia Earhart, unlike other historical figures who were clones or holograms. The inclusion of the real Amelia Earhart provided a concrete explanation for her disappearance and referenced the popular theory of her abduction by aliens. Earhart's interactions with Captain Janeway showcased the parallels between them as pioneering women in their respective fields, leaving a memorable mark on the franchise.
Amelia Earhart (Sharon Lawrence) on Star Trek: Voyager broke a franchise rule just like Star Trek: The Next Generation had previously. Like the rest of the franchise, Voyager would sometimes depict real-life historical figures when it was necessary to the plot. Some of the real people in Voyager episodes included Isaac Newton, Ghadi, Lord Byron, Socrates, and a few memorable appearances of the holographic Leonardo da Vinci. However, the first historical figure to appear on Voyager was Amelia Earhart.

"The 37's" episode of Star Trek: Voyager could have been improved with a two-part format to fully explore its two massive storylines. The episode suffered from a lack of exploration of a human colony in the Delta Quadrant, which could have been fascinating if given more screen time. Star Trek: Discovery's episode "New Eden" demonstrated how a similar storyline could be successfully executed without overshadowing the larger plot, proving that expanding "The 37's" would have worked.
Star Trek: Voyager's infamous Amelia Earhart episode failed to live up to expectations, but one big fix would have solved its issues. Voyager season 2, episode 1, "The 37's" saw the crew of the USS Voyager follow a series of clues — that started with finding a Ford truck floating in space — to a remote alien planet. There, the crew discovered a group of cryogenically frozen humans, including Earhart (Sharon Lawrence) as well as a...

Voyager's original season 1 finale, "The 37's," would have been a better choice to end the season. "The 37's" had a more expansive and interesting plot that introduced a famous historical figure. Ending with "The 37's" would have provided an interesting parallel between Voyager and Tng.
Star Trek: Voyager's season 1 finale episode was a mistake. Voyager season 1 was the shortest in the series, coming in at only 16 episodes while all other seasons were 26. Although season 1 featured some great episodes, including the show's pilot, "Caretaker," the season finale, season 1, episode 16, "Learning Curve" failed to hit the mark on several levels.
The main storyline of "Learning Curve" dealt with Lieutenant Commander Tuvok (Tim Russ) training a group of Voyager's former Maquis officers who were having trouble adjusting to Starfleet's rules in their new positions. A separate plot featured the cascading malfunction of the USS Voyager's systems after the bio-neural gel packs that...

It’s never too early to review Christmas movies is it?! In fact, this isn’t the first Christmas horror movie I’ve reviewed for Nerdly this year, but now it’s November expect a few more. Is Paramount+ cleaning house?
It seems that every scripted series that doesn't have Taylor Sheridan's name attached is getting the pink slip.
The latest series to get canceled is Joe Pickett, which recently wrapped its sophomore run on the service.
We get it: The streaming bubble has burst.
Amid the SAG-AFTRA strike and coming off the WGA strike, some controversial decisions have been made across the whole breadth of the business.
But this latest cancellation from Paramount+ hurts, mainly because the series didn't waste a single scene.
Paramount+ recently caught heat when it promoted the season finale as the series finale before walking the footage back.
These things happen.
It happened with Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin on Max, which went on to get renewed, so maybe it was a mistake.
But it doesn't get away from the fact that we're losing a gem of a series that delivered on many fronts.

Joe Pickett will not return for a third season. Paramount+ has canceled the series, starring Michael Dorman, after two seasons.
The series was originally commissioned by Spectrum in early 2021, which announced prior to the debut of season two that it would be shutting down Spectrum Originals. Paramount+ had the streaming rights to the series and seasons 1 and 2 will continue to be available on the service.
Joe Pickett followed a dedicated game warden (Dorman) and his family as they navigated the shifting sociopolitical climate of a small rural town on the verge of economic collapse.
In the most recent second season, the Wyoming game warden, played by Dorman, discovers a hunter murdered in the mountains and realizes his is just one of a series of gruesome murders. To solve the case and catch the killer, Joe must navigate a radical anti-hunting activist, a ghoulish set of twins living off the grid and his own tortured past.

“Joe Pickett” has been canceled at Paramount+ after two seasons, Variety has learned.
The drama series was originally commissioned by Charter Communications’ Spectrum Originals in early 2021. The first season aired on that platform beginning in December 2021, with Spectrum announcing a second season order in February 2022.
However, Spectrum Originals head Katherine Pope was named head of Sony Pictures Television in July 2022, with Charter announcing it would be shutting down Spectrum Originals operations in August of that year. Paramount+ has the streaming rights to the series, as it is produced by Paramount Television Studios, with Season 2 airing on the streaming service beginning in June 2023. Both seasons will remain available on the service for the time being.
“Joe Pickett” followed the title character, a Wyoming game warden played by Michael Dorman, as he investigates crimes in and around the town of Saddlestring. The series is based on the Joe Pickett novels written by C.J. Box.

Thirty years ago today, on September 21, 1993, at 10/9c, NYPD Blue premiered on ABC.
However, its debut didn't necessarily mean it reached every household.
The controversial series premiered to apocalyptic fanfare, with critics wondering if the series would usher in the end of TV as viewers knew it.
It’s funny the things you remember from your youth. I was at the age where the idea of a series willing to push the envelope, delivering a taste of the big screen on the small, sounded like an excellent idea.
They say that all publicity is good publicity, but people around the country were so concerned about the effect the show may have on the morals of the everyman that 57 local stations around the country refused to air the premiere.
A month later, there were still 45 ABC affiliates who, due to the possibility of coarse language and nudity, were still not airing it.

Grey’s Anatomy was recently renewed for a season 20, and while it remains popular, it’s been over a decade since it received any attention from major awards bodies. Grey’s Anatomy premiered in 2005 and was an instant hit for ABC. Now, it’s the network’s longest-scripted primetime television series, but it is no longer considered a critical success in the way it once was in its early days. Grey’s Anatomy has nearly 40 Emmy nominations, but the last one – Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Loretta Devine (Adele Webber) – came in 2012 for a season 8 episode.
Grey’s Anatomy has been generally well-received by critics and audiences throughout its run and even spawned multiple spinoffs, but has been ignored by the major awards bodies for over half of said run. By the end of Grey’s Anatomy season 19, the series will have aired 420 episodes, marking yet another big milestone for the medical drama.

As with most Star Trek shows, Star Trek: Voyager had certain seasons that were better than others in its seven season run. Voyager was the fourth television series in the Star Trek franchise and ran congruently with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, premiering in January 1995 and ending in May 2001 for a total of 172 episodes. The show was notable for introducing many popular characters including Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), and maintains a devoted following among Star Trek fans today.
Star Trek: Voyager's overarching plot about the crew attempting to return home after being stranded in the Delta Quadrant created numerous opportunities for great storytelling. Voyager introduced new sci-fi challenges and alien races to a well-established franchise, while still taking the opportunity to explore already popular Star Trek aliens, concepts, and characters. Like any TV show, however, Voyager included a mix of episodes in terms of quality,...

It’s nearly time for “Queen Sugar” fans to “take flight” one last time, as we prepare to say goodbye to the Bordelon family.

When the ABC drama “NYPD Blue” premiered in the fall of 1993, it shocked and impressed viewers with its gritty portrayal of the lives of police officers. Its initial plot structure that evenly focused on two detective partners was quickly reworked when one, Andy Sipowicz, surged in popularity. Dennis Franz starred as Sipowicz for the entire dozen-year duration of the series, during which the character changed partners three times. By 1999, Franz had made history as the first quadruple Best Drama Actor Emmy winner.
Franz’s last victory came for his work in the sixth season episode “Safe Home,” wherein his character’s mental state is exacerbated by his alcoholism following the brutal killing of his wife, Sylvia (Sharon Lawrence). With this win, the 54-year-old retained his previously acquired position as the category’s eighth oldest champion. Over two decades later, he still places among the top 10.

Queen Sugar creator and executive producer Ava DuVernay, who directed the pilot, will return to direct the series’ final episode. Production on the seventh and final season has begun in and around New Orleans.
DuVernay will wrap up seven seasons of an all-women directorial team for OWN’s award-winning drama series. In addition to DuVernay, season 7 directors include Kat Candler, Stacey Muhammad, showrunner Shaz Bennett, Patricia Cardoso, Aurora Guerrero and DeMane Davis.
When Queen Sugar first began production in 2016, DuVernay made a commitment to exclusively hire women as directors, and kept that promise through the entire series run. Over the course of its seven seasons, Queen Sugar has employed 42 women to direct episodes of the show, with 39 of those being first-time scripted television directors in the United States.

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 48 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12; last year, only 41 TV movies were submitted.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 27 to cast their 2022 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017, that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

It sounds like “Belfast” director Kenneth Branagh and the film’s Ciarán Hinds will be at the Oscars. It was unclear if they could attend after both contracted Covid at the BAFTA Awards in London. “I know Ciarán is all clear,” Caitríona Balfe told Variety before heading into the Chanel and Charles Finch’s annual pre-Oscar dinner. “I think [Branagh] is, too. I think he’s good.”
Henry Golding said it was nice to see Hollywood reopening for Oscar festivities. “I think it’s great and it’s about time,” he told Variety. “Chanel has made sure everyone has had a Pcr test and that’s a step further than a...

We don't wanna be anywhere other than this celebration. Over the weekend, One Tree Hill alum Bethany Joy Lenz hosted a holiday party, which doubled as a mini reunion since some of her castmates were in attendance. A few of Bethany's co-stars—including Sharon Lawrence (who played Sylvia), Shantel VanSanten (who played Quinn) and Paul Johansson (who starred as Dan)—gave fans all the feels by getting together for the celebration more than nine years after the show's end. "It wasn't until my thirties that I began to hear the same compliment repeated from many different folks every time I would throw a party," Bethany captioned a series of photos on...

After making history with its first openly LGBTQ+ lead character in The Christmas House, Hallmark is bringing back our favorite holiday-obsessed family for a spirited sequel. And it’s a total gift! The Christmas House 2: Deck Those Halls finds the Mitchells — dashing TV actor Mike (Robert Buckley of Chesapeake Shores), equally handsome gay baker brother Brandon (Mean Girls alum Jonathan Bennett), and parents Bill and Phylis — wrapped up in a twist that pits the brothers against each other in a snowy, showy battle of twinkling lights and animatronic reindeer. The original film was based on Buckley’s real-life childhood growing up in a California home that was absolutely drenched in seasonal decor by his parents every year. So much so that they became known as “The Christmas House.” In the new tale, Mike, having bought the Christmas House from his folks to keep the legacy alive, is back in...
