Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson: Was Live Netflix Event a Knockout? Sometimes Down for the Count? Grade It!

Netflix’s live, Friday-night presentation of Most Valuable Promotions’ bout between Jake “El Gallo” Paul aka The Problem Child (11-1, 7 KOs) and “Iron” Mike Tyson aka The Baddest Man on the Planet (50-7, 44 KOs) at times appeared on the ropes, from a technical perspective.

Buffering/freezing and sound issues occasionally compromised the live streaming event, which was held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in front of an audience of 72,300. (The match was originally supposed to take place in July, but an ulcer flare up forced Tyson’s doctors to intervene.)

Jimmy Fallon Roasts the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul Fight, Imagines More Matches Between Boxing Legends and YouTubers
Image
Jimmy Fallon used Thursday night’s “Tonight Show” monologue to take aim at the boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul, which gets underway on Netflix on Friday night. But he kicked off with a joke that doubled as a piece of NBCUniversal synergy for the upcoming “Wicked” movie.

“Tomorrow night on Netflix 58-year-old boxing legend Mike Tyson is coming out of retirement to fight 27-year-old YouTuber Jake Paul. And to make sure people watch, one will be dressed as Glinda and the other will be dressed as Elphaba.”

Fallon then cracked one about the fight streaming on Netflix as a live event: “The fight is on Netflix so around the fifth round I think we’re gonna find out that Mike Tyson is actually made of cake.”

The host turned his ire towards the 30-year age gap between Tyson and Paul, making a pretty striking comparison.

Sylvester Stallone's The Contender Reality Show Made Donald Trump Jealous
Image
Once upon a time, Sylvester Stallone hosted his own reality television show called The Contender, much to the dismay of former president Donald Trump. The Rocky legend teamed up with Sugar Ray Leonard, well known as one of the greatest boxers of all time, on a series that gave 16 young boxers the chance to become the next big contact sports sensation. The Contenders was nominated for two Primetime Emmys, but that did not stop Trump from reportedly talking trash about Stallone's performance as a TV host.

While at the TV market Mipcom, the co-editor-in-chief of Variety, Ramin Setoodeh, revealed how he observed the convicted former president crafting his reality TV persona and how Trump still speaks ill of Stallone to this day. He interviewed Trump several times after his presidency, discovering that The Apprentice holds a disdain for Stallone after appearing in The Contenders, which shared Mark Burnett as a producer.

The Results Are In: Kendrick Lamar Won the Great Rap War
Image
We know Kendrick Lamar and Drake will throw more shots, levy more seedy allegations, and might even drop more all-out diss songs from here. But the bulk of the war has been fought, and the crown goes to Compton. In hindsight, the way Drake poked the bear with Instagram Stories provocations and his “Taylor Made” freestyle seems masochistic. Over the past week, Lamar hit Drake with a relentless volley of diss songs that comprehensively dismantled his opponent’s character and, with “Not Like Us,” may make him the punchline of the summer.

Rod Serling in The Twilight Zone (1959)
When ‘Real Steel’ Gave Hugh Jackman A Little Taste Of Sugar
Rod Serling in The Twilight Zone (1959)
Adapted from a short story and an old Twilight Zone episode, Real Steel starred Hugh Jackman as an ex-boxer who becomes a trainer after human boxers were replaced by robots. The film became a surprise hit in 2011, and there are still rumblings about a potential sequel — either as a new movie or as a streaming series — to this day. To give the film a greater sense of realism, Jackman trained with a real-life boxing champion, Sugar Ray Leonard, to work on his own moves in the ring. At the time of the film’s release, Jackman talked to us about what a thrill it was to work so closely with one of his athletic heroes. (Click on the media bar below to hear Hugh Jackman) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Hugh_Jacjman_Reel_Steel_Suguar_Ray_Leonard_.mp3 Real Steel is available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and most digital platforms.

Juneteenth Viewing Guide: Where to Watch TV Specials and Films Commemorating the Fall of Slavery
Abraham Lincoln
Juneteenth, which falls on June 19, commemorates the fall of slavery in the United States.

It celebrates the anniversary of the order made by Major General Gordon Granger on June 1965 that proclaimed freedom for slaves in Texas. The order was actually made two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

In a tweet Monday, former President Obama explained it as the “delayed but welcome news of freedom reaching the enslaved Black folks in Galveston, Texas.” In 2021, President Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday.

Many networks are marking the occasion with Juneteenth TV specials or movie marathons showcasing Black talent and/or excellence. See our viewing guide below:

ABC

ABC is commemorating Juneteenth and Black Music Month with “Hip Hop at 50,” a “Soul of a Nation” presentation airing at 10 p.m. Et. It’ll stream Tuesday on Hulu. It’ll be hosted by Angie Martinez and feature Master P, Mc Lyte,...

Donnie Yen Brought Sugar Ray Leonard And Ip Man Punches To John Wick: Chapter 4
Image
Donnie Yen is the premier martial arts showman on Earth. He is the heir to Jackie Chan, who was Bruce Lee's successor, and, like those legends, his fighting style is a fluid amalgam of hand-to-hand combat techniques. Watching Yen ply his craft is like listening to a vintage De La Soul track. His fight scenes are an exhilarating, expertly choreographed blur of disciplines. Yen samples from Tai Chi, karate, Taekwondo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, aikido, wrestling, judo and so much more. And when you spot a reference to a patented punch, kick, or feint from another film or a notable fighter, you get every bit as giddy as the first time you heard the Beastie Boys blend John Williams' "Jaws" theme with Bernard Herrmann's legendary "Psycho" cue in the song, "Egg Man," on their "Paul's Boutique" album.

At the age of 59, Yen shows no signs of slowing down, nor has...

How a 1979 Boxing Match Became the Fight of Marvin Gaye’s Life
Image
On The Evening of Sept. 28, 1979, Caesars Palace in Las Vegas felt like the center of the universe. Sugar Ray Leonard was fighting Andy Price for the North American Boxing Federation welterweight title. In the crowd, sports legends like Joe Dimaggio and Joe Louis mingled with entertainers like Smokey Robinson and Cary Grant. Diana Ross sat ringside, next to Motown founder Berry Gordy. And in Price’s corner, amid the television cameras and cigar smoke, sat Price’s manager, Marvin Gaye, feeling like his whole life was on the line.

Why Every Round Of Sylvester Stallone And Carl Weathers' Rocky Finale Fight Was Shot Twice
Image
"Rocky" has endured as one of the most uplifting sports films of all time thanks in large part to its heartfelt portrayal of two social misfits falling haltingly in love as one of them trains for an unlikely, yet plausible shot at the heavyweight boxing title. Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire give lovely, lived-in performances that are painful to watch at times because Rocky has no idea how awkwardly his gregariousness lands, while Adrian seems terrified that anyone would find her worthy of affection.

For most of its runtime, "Rocky" is a human drama about losers. It soars to life during its Bill Conti-scored training montage that explodes the film into its exhilarating third act. Interestingly, the final match isn't all that long. From the opening bell to the end of the fifteenth round, it occupies a scant eight-and-a-half minutes of screen time. But it feels like trench warfare...

The Amazing Race's Phil Keoghan Wins Celebrity Pickleball Competition
Image
Phil Keoghan, host of The Amazing Race, and country singer Dierks Bentley, came out on top on Pickled, a celebrity pickleball competition hosted by Stephen Colbert. The special was a fundraiser for Comic Relief, featuring 16 celebrities divided into teams of two. Phil's team name was called “When Harry Net Rally.” Phil is currently hosting The Amazing Race season 34, which has five teams left in the competition.

Phil is no stranger to tough competitions. But he and Dierks ended up winning the entire Pickled competition, which was a bit of an upset, as judges’ favorites Emma Watson and Sugar Ray Leonard, aka “The Volley Ranchers,” were strongly expected to take first. But they were eliminated in the semifinals, leaving “When Harry Net Rally” to face off against “Party ‘Til You Cuke” (made up of Tig Notaro and mystery guest Will Ferrell) in the final round. Phil's team emerged victorious, with a...

Stephen Colbert’s New Celebrity Pickleball Game Plays on TV’s Sports Frenzy
Image
Stephen Colbert has a new game that many TV networks might like to play.

With pickleball all the rage and the demand for sports programming growing fiercer by the day, CBS has teamed up with Colbert and Funny or Die to produce a celebrity tournament airing Nov. 17. The two-hour event might seem like a goof — and remind viewers old enough of “Battle of the Network Stars” in the ’70s — but it carries serious ramifications for an industry increasingly reliant on sports in all its forms.

In “Pickled,” Colbert joins with sportscasters Bill Raftery and Cari Champion to comment on pickleball antics featuring everyone from Sugar Ray Leonard to Will Ferrell and Emma Watson. According to Colbert, who began playing the racket sport in January, the rivalries in the taped tournament are intense: “You don’t get to be fully employed in Hollywood unless you are competitive, and these people are...
