‘Sinners’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Li Jun Li, Delroy Lindo | Written and Directed by Ryan Coogler

The latest film from writer-director Ryan Coogler, Sinners is a thrillingly original vampire movie that plays like From Dusk Til Dawn in the Deep South. As sinful and sexual as its title suggests, it’s a richly detailed, emotionally engaging period drama that’s packed with terrific performances and has a soundtrack to die for…and then the vampires show up and things get properly crazy.

After a brief teaser of a prologue, the film opens in 1932, with the Smokestack twins, Smoke and Stack returning to their home town of Clarksdale, Mississippi after time spent first in the trenches of WWI and then in Chicago, where they apparently ran with Al Capone. Their intention is to open a juke joint, so after buying...

Wesley Snipes in Blade (1998)
Kevin Feige confirms Mahershala Ali is still attached to the MCU Blade reboot, which will be set in modern day
Wesley Snipes in Blade (1998)
The fact that there was going to be a Blade reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring Mashershala Ali in the title role, came as a huge surprise when the announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July of 2019… but we’ve reached the six year anniversary of that announcement, and we still haven’t seen a new Blade movie. The closest we’ve gotten is Ali making a vocal cameo as the character at the end of Eternals back in 2021. Things have been looking dire, with screenwriters and directors coming and going – but while talking to a group of journalists at Marvel Studios last Friday, studio president Kevin Feige confirmed that Ali is still attached to star in an MCU Blade movie, which may have finally found its story and setting.

Last year, we heard a rumor that Mahershala Ali is getting “increasingly frustrated...

'Sinners' Has One of the Craziest Connections to McU's Scrapped Original 'Blade' Movie
Image
Ryan Coogler's latest film, Sinners, has proven to be one of the biggest hits of 2025, with the supernatural horror musical film receiving rave reviews and becoming the ninth-highest-grossing film of the year. With a worldwide gross of $365 million, Sinners also stands tall as one of the most profitable original horror projects released this decade. Recently, a new report about the film's production has created an interesting connection to a long-in-development Marvel Studios film. As it turns out, the wardrobe used for some of the extras in the movie was initially developed for Blade, the Marvel Cinematic Universe film that was first announced in 2019.

Sev Ohanian, one of the producers of Sinners, would share an interesting story about the film's pre-production. Given that Sinners is set in 1932, period-accurate set design and costumes were required, primarily because several scenes in the Juke Joint feature hundreds of extras, which necessitated a large number of costumes.

Review: Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ on Warner Bros. Home Entertainment 4K Uhd
Image
Set in 1930s Mississippi, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners pulls liberally from the folklore surrounding that period’s explosion of blues talent in the Delta area. Musicians of the time, crushed by the weight of Jim Crow and the Great Depression, generally plied their wares in juke joints, and the film centers on one such establishment newly acquired by identical twins Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan), dubbed the Smokestack Twins.

The brothers fled the South as soon as they could, making their way as soldiers in the European trenches and enforcers for the Chicago mob. Now they’ve returned to Clarksdale with a lot of ill-gotten gain and even more cynicism about their travels, having found only more discrimination in ostensibly more progressive places. In coming home, they’ve chosen the devil they know.

Gathering supplies for their opening night, Smoke and Stack also source talent for their establishment from those living in the area.

Godzilla x Kong 3 Gets a Monster-Sized Update 3 Months Into Filming
Image
Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is almost done with principal photography. The upcoming blockbuster will be the sixth theatrical installment in the Monsterverse franchise.

According to Ann Foley (via X), who is a costume designer on the upcoming movie, production has wrapped in Australia and is now heading to Utah.Tess McLeod, another costume designer working on the movie, reshared Foley's Instagram Story on her own page, along with the added caption, "Homestretch!!!," suggesting that Utah may be the final filming destination for Supernova. Production on the third Godzilla x Kong movie got underway back in April with Grant Sputore in the director's chair.

While plot specifics remain scarce for the Dave Callaham-penned Supernova, the movie will reportedly feature a new cast of human characters, as well as a returning Dan Stevens, working alongside the titular Titans as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat. The movie's title,...

Michael B. Jordan's $364 Million Supernatural Horror Is Already an American Streaming Hit
Image
After lighting up the box office with an original horror tale no one saw coming, Sinners is now claiming its throne on streaming—and it’s doing so with bite. Ryan Coogler’s blood-soaked Southern horror epic, Sinners, dropped on Max this July 4, and it’s already dominating the charts. Just days after landing on the platform, the film shot to #1 in the U.S., giving subscribers a chance to catch what’s become the surprise juggernaut of 2025. With a Certified Fresh 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and a sky-high 96% audience score, the dual Michael B. Jordan-starrer is now officially a box office and streaming sensation.

It’s rare these days to see a film not tethered to an existing franchise break through, but Sinners proved there’s still a hunger for something original—especially when it’s this good. After grossing $362 million worldwide, the film now holds the crown as...

Michael B. Jordan Movie With 97% Rt Score Becomes Instant Streaming Hit
Image
Michael B. Jordan may only be 38 years old, but he has been acting for over two decades already. He got his start as a child actor playing one-off roles in TV shows like The Sopranos. His teenage and young adult years then included parts in shows like The Wire, Friday Night Lights, and Parenthood.

In the 2010s, Jordan made a pivot into more film acting. One huge driver of this change was a 2013 independent film called Fruitvale Station. This movie got rave reviews and helped put Jordan on the map as a more serious actor.

It also kick-started his working relationship with director Ryan Coogler. Coogler would go on to direct Jordan in Creed, a Rocky reboot film led by the actor, and the McU's Black Panther.

In this regard, Jordan has become Coogler's muse. This year, the pair made another film together, which is now becoming a huge hit on streaming.

Mahershala Ali Sidesteps ‘Blade’ Status Questions: ‘Leave Me Out of It’
Image
Mahershala Ali didn’t seem to want to talk about the status of his long-delayed Marvel feature, “Blade.” During an interview with Vogue for “Jurassic World Rebirth,” co-star Jonathan Bailey asked Ali and Scarlett Johansson to list which Marvel films they had appeared.

Ali quickly piped up, “Leave me out of it,’ and Bailey responded, “Well there’s one that we’re very excited about.”

“That’s a Scarlett question,” Ali chuckled. The trio then quickly moved to attempting to name all of Johansson’s MCU features, after which Ali smoothly slid into the next, unrelated question, even as as Johansson asked, “What about you?”

Ali did make one, voice-only cameo appearance in 2021’s “Eternals” as Blade, and since then the character’s solo feature film has been in development hell. Ali was first announced to play the character at San Diego Comic Con in 2019. The project has since been...

Sinners: Ryan Coogler’s Vampire Epic Starring Michael B Jordan Hits No. 1 In 28 Countries On Max

Here’s How Sinners Fared After Streaming Debut On Max! (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Max added Sinners to its streaming library on July 4, 2025, and the audience has not wasted any time since then. The vampire thriller, which was already a hit in theaters earlier this year, has found a new wave of popularity online.

The film, released by Warner Bros. Pictures and directed by Ryan Coogler, opened to a strong start on Max, landing at No. 2 on FlixPatrol’s Top 10 charts. Only A Minecraft Movie, still riding high from its massive box office run, kept the top spot.

One of the Best Versions of Godzilla Is Returning to American Theaters 9 Years Later
Image
The last decade has been a good one for fans of Godzilla. The famous Japanese kaiju keeps coming back in his Hollywood MonsterVerse franchise but, sometimes, Japanese cinema also brings forward a story that shows the iconic Titan in a new light, such as 2016's Shin Godzilla. The movie is considered one of the best ever made in the franchise, and U.S. audiences will finally get a chance to see it on the big screen in the best quality possible. As first reported by Variety, Gkids has acquired North American distribution rights for the movie, and will release it on August 14 in a never-before-seen 4K remaster.

Shin Godzilla has all the elements of a high-stakes alien invasion movie. In the story, Japanese authorities struggle to find a way to deal with the fact that a huge monster simply appeared in Tokyo, destroying everything in its path. The movie's approach...

Sinners Makes History With New Viewing Option for Streaming Debut on Max
Image
After its theatrical success, Ryan Coogler's hit film Sinners is now streaming on Max. This also makes history by offering a new viewing option that's never been done for a streaming release.

Per Warner Bros. Discovery, Sinners has two viewing options available on Max: the theatrical cut and the Black American Sign Language (Basl) version. It's the first time that a streaming service has exclusively debuted a film interpreted in Basl. Wbd has described Basl as a "distinct dialect of American Sign Language (Asl) with its own dynamic history and unique grammar, signing space, rhythm, facial expressions, and cultural nuances."

“Accessibility within streaming is not a one-size-fits-all approach," Wbd's SVP of Global Product Management, Naomi Waibel, said in a statement. "Our goal at Max is to make these great stories accessible to all audiences in a way that is authentic to the content and the communities we serve. Sinners...

After Commercial Success, Sinners Immediately Becomes a Hit on Streaming in Just 1 Day (But It Couldn't Pass 2025's Biggest Film)
Image
Sinners premiered in theaters earlier in 2025, and was recieved with critical and commercial success. It's no surprise that the vampire movie's same popularity would continue on streaming services.

Warner Bros. Pictures distributed Sinners, and it premiered on its streaming platform, Max (soon to be rebranded as HBO Mas), on Jul. 4. It didn't take long for Max subscribers to find the film, and it immediately became a huge hit. Per FlixPatrol, Sinners debuted in the Top 10 charts at No. 2, but it wasn't able to dethrone 2025's highest-grossing film: A Minecraft Movie.

However, it looks like A Minecraft Movie's domination might end soon. Sinners debuted on Jul. 4, and the data from all territories isn't available yet. However, on its first day, the vampire horror reached the top of the charts in 28 countries across Australia, Asia, and Europe. While that is certainly promising for the future, as Sinners will likely top the charts in its second day,...

Sinners Bought A "Warehouse Full" Of Costumes From Marvel Studios Once Meant For Period Blade Movie
Image
When the first trailer for Black Panther director Ryan Coogler's Sinners was released, many people pointed out that it had, in some ways, left Marvel Studios' long-delayed Blade movie surplus to requirement.

Coogler's horror epic was a surprise hit, grossing $364 million worldwide and receiving widespread critical acclaim. However, it being a vampire movie led by a Black actor (with a 1920s setting) wasn't the only thing it had in common with Blade.

During an interview with ScreenCrush, Sinners producer Sev Ohanian shared a "fun Marvel easter egg" when he revealed that many of the costumes used by background actors in the movie were originally planned for Blade when it was being developed as a period piece.

"[Costume designer] Ruth Carter was working on the Blade movie that ended up not shooting," he revealed. "At one point that movie was going to deal with, and she’s talked about this before, but...

'Sinners' Was Able to Use Period Costumes From Cancelled MCU 'Blade' Reboot
Image
Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has found monumental success away from the MCU with this year’s vampire movie, Sinners. But, it turns out, the filmmaker wasn’t as far away from the world of Marvel as we first thought. Set in 1932 and starring Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers who return to their hometown to find it slowly being taken over by the undead, Sinners shares a surprising connection to the best vampire hunter in the business, Blade. And it’s a connection you will have definitely missed.

The infamous challenge of getting Blade back to the big screen is now well-documented, with the reboot, which is still set to star Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali as the titular vampire hunter, having now gone through several different stories and directions. One such story involved taking The Daywalker back in time, and while this idea was eventually abandoned, Sinners was able to...

Jonathan Bailey
Oscar Predix: Which actors will have big years?
Jonathan Bailey
by Nathaniel R

Jonathan Bailey in Wicked For Good

This post's titular prompt question is not quite the same as "Who will be Oscar nominated this coming winter?" but having a big year in your career never hurts in gaining awards traction... or at least momentum for a future year. Will Jonathan Bailey's suddenly A-list career (with two potential giant blockbusters in a span of five months) convince Oscar voters that his SAG nomination last year should be mirrored with an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor? Will Sinners cultural dominance this spring help Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo land their first overdue Oscar nods early next year or will the zeitgiest move on?

These are just a couple of the questions I've been asking myself about the upcoming Oscar races for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor but there's more after the jump...

Oscars: At 2025 Halfway Point, Only One Movie Released In Past Six Months Is Guaranteed A Best Picture Nomination – Which One Is It?
Image
As we hit the last day of June, it is time to take stock of where the race for the 98th Annual Academy Awards stands. I know they don’t happen until March 15, but it is never too early to start talking.

And it’s pretty simple. Six months into the year, exactly halfway done, only one movie released between New Year’s Day and now stands a 100%, surefire, absolutely guaranteed chance of being nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. I am only talking about films actually released, not those that played festivals like Sundance and Cannes and still awaiting release in the year’s second half.

Wanna see which one it is? Here is the trailer:

Ryan Coogler’s Warner Bros. period film Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan and released on April 18, blends gangster and vampire genres about two twin brothers returning from Chicago’s gangland wars to their...

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova aims to have a compelling human element
Godzilla and King Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
More than a decade has passed since Legendary Pictures secured the rights to Godzilla and other characters owned and created by the Japanese company Toho so they could launch a cinematic universe they call the MonsterVerse – and they also secured the rights to the King Kong character so he could be part of their MonsterVerse as well. Things got started with Godzilla in 2014, and since then the universe has expanded with Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, the animated series Skull Island, the live-action series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. A third Godzilla / Kong mash-up is now on the way – and a couple of months ago, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. officially announced that filming is underway, unveiling an ominous teaser, revealing that the film is aiming for a March 26, 2027 theatrical release, and giving it a title – Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.

'Godzilla X Kong' Sequel Star Reveals Movie Will Address Biggest Complaint About Human Characters
Image
The upcoming Monsterverse movie Godzilla X Kong: Supernova is shaping up to be the biggest film in the franchise yet. Originally intended to serve as an exciting conclusion to the franchise, Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) ultimately reinvigorated the series, paving the way for the sequel, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. However, one constant complaint that has been levied against the series since 2014, with Gareth Edwards' Godzilla, is a lack of an engaging human narrative to pair with the intense kaiju fights. According to one actor in the upcoming film, that specific complaint will be addressed in Supernova.

In an interview with Ktvu in Oakland, Delroy Lindo, who recently made waves for his performance as Delta Slim in Ryan Coogler's Sinners, talked about his upcoming role in Godzilla X Kong: Supernova. As the actor would tell the news station, it was the production team's dedication to crafting an engaging human character...

Godzilla X Kong: Supernova Star Explains How The Sequel Is Tackling The Oldest Monsterverse Problem
Image
Godzilla X Kong: Supernova star Delroy Lindo provides some perspective on how the next entry in Legendary's Monsterverse could break new ground with its human cast. While very little is known about the plot of Godzilla X Kong: Supernova, the non-Titan cast list has been steadily growing for months now, and it's loaded with renowned stars like Lindo.

In an interview segment with Ktvu in Oakland, Lindo got into his experience on the set of the upcoming third team-up between Godzilla and Kong. He specifically noted his appreciation for the producers from Legendary and Warner Bros. for their vision for the movie:

I appreciated the fact that these producers are equally cognizant of the fact that the human element in these narratives needs to be as strong as possible. And from that standpoint, they worked with me to flesh out the character they wanted me to play...we worked to...

Mahershala Ali's Honest Update on Blade Will Bum Fans Out
Image
Progress on the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Blade reboot is far from sharp as the anticipated film remains in development hell. Amid recent comments from the original Blade trilogy's screenwriter, Blade 4 star Mahershala Ali adds to the project's uncertainty with his latest update.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the world premiere of Jurassic World: Rebirth, Ali provided a progress report that will further frustrate fans hoping to see his Daywalker grace the MCU. According to the Oscar-winning actor, he's long been ready to do the reboot, but has yet to hear from Marvel about the potential next steps. "I would love for Blade to happen. We'll see. I don't know where Marvel is at right now. I'm looking for the next great part. I really am," he said.

Mahershala Ali, 51, Wants Marvel To Know That He's Ready To Start Filming 'Blade'
Image
It's been several months since the Marvel Studios reboot of Blade was pulled from its release schedule. The project was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, revealing that the Academy Award-winning actor Mahershala Aliwould play the human-vampire hybrid Eric Brooks, Aka Blade. But despite the multiple issues this Marvel project has, Ali is still keen to work with Marvel.

During a red carpet interview for the Jurassic World Rebirth premiere with Variety, Ali asked when fans would see this Blade reboot. In response, he said, "Call Marvel," and tell them that "He's ready." The actor didn't give much further information, which makes sense as the project has had many issues behind the scenes. Now, the ball is in Kevin Feige and Marvel Studio's court if they want to make some real progress on this feature.

"Call Marvel. I'm ready. Let them know I'm ready."

In 2022, Kevin Feige announced that Blade...

Mahershala Ali is still down to film Blade: “Call Marvel, I’m ready”
Wesley Snipes in Blade (1998)
It’s been six years since Marvel Studios first unveiled Blade at San Diego Comic-Con, but the project has remained stuck in development hell ever since, cycling through writers and directors with no clear end in sight. One constant, however, has been Mahershala Ali, who remains committed to the role and is eager to finally bring Blade to life—assuming Marvel can ever get the film off the ground.

During the New York premiere of Jurassic World Rebirth, Ali was asked if he knew when production on Blade would finally begin. “Call Marvel,” he said. “I’m ready. Let them know I’m ready.”

I imagine Ali might be feeling a tad frustrated at this point, but kudos to him for sticking with it. Fans have been puzzled as to why Marvel is having so much trouble with Blade, including David S. Goyer, who scripted the original three movies starring Wesley Snipes.

Mahershala Ali Still Wants to Film ‘Blade’: ‘Call Marvel, Let Them Know I’m Ready’
Image
It’s been nearly six years since Mahershala Ali stepped out onstage during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, where producer Kevin Feige announced that the two-time Oscar-winning actor would be playing the vampire slayer Blade, rebooting the character first originated on-screen by Wesley Snipes and adding him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since then, the project has dropped numerous directors, lost cast members and faced several delays.

But even through all that turbulent development, Ali tells Variety he’s keen to start filming on “Blade.”

“Call Marvel,” Ali said at the New York premiere of his new film “Jurassic World Rebirth.” The actor kept his answer brief when asked when “Blade” production could start. “I’m ready. Let them know I’m ready.”

Marvel Studios first announced Blade in 2019, alongside other projects like Disney Plus series “WandaVision,” “Loki” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” as well as movies like “Eternals,...

Blade Legend Asked Marvel to Come Back, Was Told, ‘We’re Good, Thanks’
Image
The Blade reboot, starring Mahershala Ali as the titular vampire-killer, seems to be dead in the water. Now, original Blade writer David Goyer wants the world to know he tried to help it survive.

Goyer made the revelation in an interview with Variety, saying that he offered to assist the studio with the project months ago after some prodding from friends. "I wasn't even really thinking about it," he said. "But then I had my agent call Marvel and say, 'Do you guys need any help?' And they said, 'We love you, but we think we've cracked it now, and we’re in a good place.' And then the latest thing happened."

Goyer would have been an ideal person to write the Blade reboot script since he was involved with The Dark Knight trilogy. Despite the rejection, the filmmaker says he would love to work on the Blade reboot if he was asked.

Ryan Coogler's Sinners Hits Max Next Month, Director Debunks Sequel Rumors
Image
Speculation around a potential sequel to Sinners gained traction in late-May after anonymous X (formerly Twitter) scooper @MyTimeToShineH claimed a follow-up was already in the works. But a recent interview with director Ryan Coogler has firmly debunked that rumor.

Speaking with Ebony Magazine, Coogler explained that Sinners was designed as a self-contained story, not the start of a franchise. "I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that," he said, referencing his time helming Black Panther and Creed.

Following Coogler’s comments, the original tweet from @MyTimeToShineH was quietly deleted, with no acknowledgment of the retraction—an approach the scooper has used before when previous rumors didn’t pan out, including inaccurate claims about the Fantastic Four cast and Ms. Marvel's origin.

This situation serves as a reminder to take unverified scoop culture with caution and to rely...

2025’s Top Original Box Hit Finally Set for Streaming Release
Image
Ryan Coogler’s vampire movie, Sinners, is set to arrive on Max streaming starting July 4, Warner Bros. has confirmed. The horror film has been a huge success in theaters, making over $361 million worldwide, with the majority of that coming from the U.S. Its domestic earnings of more than $275 million have made it the highest-grossing original horror movie ever in the United States, beating the long-standing record held by Jaws.

Unlike many horror hits that are based on books or established franchises, Sinners is an original story. This has helped it stand out, not only in the U.S. but also globally, where it now holds the record as the top original horror film worldwide.

The movie opened strong with $48 million during its first weekend, a rare feat for an original film. Its performance stayed steady, dropping only 4.9% in its second weekend—a decline usually seen only with huge hits like Avatar and Shrek.
