Scott Jennings Is Latest of CNN’s Conservative Voices to Come Under Scrutiny
Image
Scott Jennings has become so much a part of CNN in recent months, one can argue, that he has become almost as familiar as anchors like Anderson Cooper and Jake Tapper. Even so, he doesn’t have to follow the same rules they do.

Gayle King on Controversial Ta-Nehisi Coates Interview: “Sometimes, You Have Hard Conversations on Television”
Image
The CBS Mornings interview with author Ta-Nehisi Coates has been a “learning” opportunity for the staff, according to anchor Gayle King.

Speaking at a panel at the Paley Center in Manhattan on Tuesday night, King said that the anchors will not “shy away from hard conversations,” but know they have to be mindful of how they approach “hot-button issues.” King was on the panel with fellow CBS Mornings anchors Nate Burleson and Tony Dokoupil, as well as featured host Vladimir Duthiers and the show’s executive producer Shawna Thomas.

“Life is hard. The news is hard. Sometimes, you have hard conversations on television,” King said.

“We know that it comes with a great responsibility. And we’re mindful of that. Certain topics you know are just hot-button issues. You have to be very careful about how you ask the questions, how the questions are received. I think we don’t shy away from hard conversations,...

Co-hosts Nate Burleson and Tony Dokoupil, who did the interview with Coates, were onstage with King and Thomas, as was featured host Vladimir Duthiers, but they did not weigh in on the situation.

Ana Navarro Has No Plans to Mention ‘The View’ While Hosting at DNC
Image
Ana Navarro is known best these days as a co-host on ABC’s “The View,” but she isn’t likely to bring up the connection when she hosts an evening of the Democratic National Convention this week.

Although “The View” operates under the aegis of ABC News, Navarro is not held to the same standards as its full-time journalists, because she is an opinion-focused contributor to the program, according to a person familiar with the matter, not a traditional journalist who is expected to avoid any potential appearance of bias. ABC News declined to make executives available for comment, but her role at “The View” is not expected to be referenced publicly.

Her appearance at the convention this week has generated some scrutiny on social media as well as stories by outlets such as Fox News and Entertainment Weekly.

“I can’t tell you how much it means to me,...

CNN Launches Martha Stewart Documentary Series Under CNN Studios Banner
Image
Martha Stewart didn’t talk to CNN for a new original documentary series the news outlet has produced about her. But she’s still the star of the show.

“The Many Lives of Martha Stewart” is a four-part series produced by CNN Studios, a division devoted to longer-form and enterprise programming in the wake of a strategic decision made in 2022 to scale back big ambitions to compete in the documentary arena. Under previous leader Jeff Zucker, CNN extended its aegis to the world of film festivals and documentary series led by notables such as Anthony Bourdain, Lisa Ling and W. Kamau Bell.

A good chunk of that work was scrapped after Warner Bros. Discovery, a big player in the world of cost-conscious reality programming, took over CNN, and installed a leader, Chris Licht, who had a mandate to pare operations. Months later, CNN would win an Oscar for a documentary...

CNN Is Shedding Anchors, Producers. Rivals Keep Picking Them Up
Image
CNN keeps feeding the mouths that bite it.

As Warner Bros. Discovery has orchestrated massive changes and cuts to the popular news giant, a stream of producers, anchors and executives have left — some of their own volition, and many of them not. But no matter the case, a growing number of these now-former CNN die-hards are being scooped up by rivals including MSNBC, ABC News and CBS News.

CBS News on Wednesday announced it had lined up Lisa Ling as a contributor. The veteran journalist spent eight years at CNN leading viewers through interesting issues as host of the documentary series, This Is Life,” which was cancelled amid a cutback of original programming that uses outside partners. ABC News on Wednesday announced that Brooke Bower, who had been managing editor of CNN Politics, was joining as executive producer of the Sunday politics show “This Week.”

Warner Bros. Discovery took over...

Even the Super Bowl wasn’t going to keep this crowd away from celebrating Michelle Yeoh and her historic Oscar nomination as the first Asian woman with a nod in the best actress category.

On Sunday night — while the last quarter of the big game was still being played — around 100 guests arrived at the new Mandarin Oriental Residences in Beverly Hills for a dinner in honor of the Everything Everywhere All at Once star.

Hosted by project developer Michael Shvo, chef Daniel Boulud and Mandarin Oriental, the night began with a cocktail party, where a large-screen TV had the game on.

Jeremy Lin and Oscar-Shortlisted ’38 at the Garden’ Filmmakers on “Linsanity,” Asian Hate and HBO Short (Exclusive)
Image
On Wednesday evening, Jeremy Lin, the basketball star whose 2012 run of greatness with the New York Knicks sparked a period of “Linsanity,” came to LA’s Museum in Tolerance for a screening of the Oscar-shortlisted HBO documentary short 38 at the Garden — a film that contrasts the pride that the Linsanity era brought Asian-Americans with the recent rise of hate directed at them — wearing brand new clothes and shoes. That was because, he revealed, he hadn’t planned to be there, but when he decided days earlier to leave the league in China in which he had been playing, he felt it was important to show his support for a film that, in his view, is less about him than a crisis that he wants to help shine a light on.

Introduced by executive producer Lisa Ling and fielding questions from yours truly alongside the short’s director Frank Chi and...
