5 Movies You Forgot Had Theme Songs
Image
It was the “Footloose” of times, it was the “Ninja Rap” of times. We’re talking, of course, about the golden age of movie tie-in promotional singles of the ‘80s and ‘90s, a time when a well-placed theme could create the song and the movie of the summer, while a misused one probably involved Mc Hammer. In between were a lot of attempts that nobody remembers, because what was the point of making a movie if you couldn’t coerce a pop star to sell their soul for a lot of money?

5 Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

You’re gonna wanna sit down for this: Tone Loc was in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Right? Who could possibly remember both of those things enough to remember that they were related? And it’s not like you put Tone Loc in your movie if you don’t need one of his songs, so...

John Capodice Dead: Starred in 'Seinfeld', 'Ninja Turtles', 'General Hospital'
Image
Actor John Capodice, who was probably best known for his roles in movies such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and TV shows including Seinfeld and General Hospital, has died at the age of 83. One of those stars who has been seen by millions, even though many may not have his name on the tip of their tongue, Capodice leaves behind a body of work that incorporates over 200 acting credits.

Although Capodice never had that lead role, or long-running stint in a TV show, he certainly made his mark in the industry. That can be seen in the tributes that poured in on social media following the announcement of the actor’s passing. The news of his death was announced in a posting by the Pizzi Funeral Home, which read:

“John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all who had the pleasure to meet him.

10 Dark Disney Movie Truths You Only Realize as an Adult
Image
This article contains spoilers for Moana 2.

Disney has been a trusted brand for producing family-friendly all-age films. From original stories to classic fairy tales, many Disney movies are widely loved and long celebrated. Magical creatures and friendly animals make most stories less frightening despite tackling dark themes. The promise of love between a princess and a prince is also able to gloss over the disturbing truth underneath their union.

In fact, many classic Disney movies are more problematic than fans noticed. The portrayal of romance goes wrong in many movies. From Snow White to Moana 2, what seems like a magical journey about empowerment and adventure might have some very disturbing details lying in between the lines. Most Love Is Instant

Disney loves an instant love story. From Snow White to Cinderella, love at first sight is Disney's style. What's gluing two characters together is rarely explained in a Disney movie,...

The 1990s produced plenty of classic comedy movies, with some iconic performances from the decade's funniest performers. Comedians like Robin Williams, Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey were all at the peak of their powers in the 1990s, but the decade also delivered great comedy performances from some unexpected sources. Dramatic actors flexed their comedy chops, resulting in some surprisingly hilarious movies.

The 1990s were a miniature golden age for comedy movies in Hollywood, as studios were willing to fork out big budgets for original concepts which let comedy performers and writers do what they do best. Decades later, there are dozens of hilarious classics which still get a lot of love. Actors found their own unique comedy voices, and they were given the opportunity to play around with the material.

10 Cartoons From The 1990s That Were Based On Movies
Image
Animated TV shows based on popular 1990s films aimed to expand franchises & appeal to younger audiences. Success of films like Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Beetlejuice led to the creation of their animated series. Some 1990s animated series like Back to the Future, Jumanji, and Godzilla adapted source material for kids.

The 1990s saw a huge spike in the popularity of animated TV shows, especially those aimed at kids, so naturally, many of the more popular films at the time got in on the animated action. Animation is an incredible and time-consuming art form. Prior to 1995 and the release of the feature length movie, Toy Story, most animated shows were hand drawn. The 1990s saw the ability to use CGI in making animated content rapidly improve, but this was still largely an era of hand-drawn animation for most TV shows.

However, despite the time and careful effort required to create such projects,...

There's A Gilligan's Island Novel That Puts A Dark Spin On The Characters We Love
Image
The premise of Sherwood Schwartz's 1964 sitcom "Gilligan's Island" is succinctly laid out in its indelible theme song, written by Schwartz and George Wyle. The S.S. Minnow, helmed by Captain G. Jonas Grumby (Alan Hale) and his first officer Gilligan (Bob Denver) took on five passengers for a three-hour boat tour of Hawai'i. The ship hit some bad weather, got lost at sea, and washed up on an uncharted island somewhere in the Pacific. Now the two sailors, along with a millionaire (Jim Backus), his wife (Natalie Schafer), a movie star (Tina Louise), a professor (Russel Johnson), and a lottery-winning tourist (Dawn Wells), have to learn to survive, all to comedic effect.

"Gilligan's Island" has no themes of actual survival, instead rolling with its slapstick elements; the series clearly takes place in a cartoon reality. As such, the characters play as broad archetypes, mugging and screaming in an unrealistic fashion.

Alan Ritchson Never Looked Up To Action Stars Before Becoming Reacher, but Imitated This Comedy Genius
Image
Ace Ventura inspired Alan Ritchson's comedic acting style, which he would often emulate for laughs growing up. A security guard once stopped Alan Ritchson from meeting his idol, Jim Carrey. Alan Ritchson has honed his acting skills for diverse roles, from tough guys to funny characters.

Alan Ritchson plays it straight as Jack Reacher in his Prime Video series, but the actor recently recalled how he used to show his funny side by imitating his hero, Jim Carrey. Having grown up watching Carrey’s classic outrageous comedies such as Dumb & Dumber and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Ritchson said that the actor’s “physical, goofy and unafraid” style was something that he wanted to emulate at the time.

A Scrapped Gilligan's Island Idea Would Have Explained Some Of The Show's Nonsense
Image
In 1989, "Weird Al" Yankovic released a song called "Isle Thing," a parody of Tone Lōc's 1988 hit "Wild Thing." In Yankovic's version, the song's narrator met an attractive woman at the Circle-k and went back to her place, presumably for some active coitus. Instead, however, the woman eschewed sex for a marathon of "Gilligan's Island" reruns. The narrator immediately began to recognize the logical inconsistencies in Sherwood Schwartz's beloved 1963 sitcom, notably that the Professor (Russell Johnson) could build a nuclear reactor using only coconuts, but wasn't able to construct a boat to escape the desert island he and the castaways were stranded on. Yankovic also noted that "those homeboys brought an awful lot for just a three-hour tour."

The premise of "Gilligan's Island" is made clear in the show's opening theme song. Two sailors and five guests were to take a three-hour boat tour around Hawai'i when they hit bad weather,...

‘Milli Vanilli’ Review: Doc About Disgraced Duo Poses Intriguing Questions That It Never Satisfyingly Answers
Image
Back in 1990, the downfall of European pop duo Milli Vanilli seemed like an open-and-shut case of disgrace.

They — Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus — were the lip-synching scofflaws, convicted in the court of public opinion of fraud against a generation of FM Top 40 radio listeners robbed of our precious sense that music and its artistic authorship were directly linked. The punishment? Permanent professional ostracism and punchline status — though when Pilatus died of an accidental drug overdose in 1998, the reality became even more punitive.

Luke Korem’s new documentary Milli Vanilli attempts to give the “Blame It on the Rain” non-singers 106 minutes of re-evaluation. Were they perpetrators or victims? If they were some gradation of the latter, who were the actual villains? If they were some gradation of the former, did the punishment fit the crime? What did Rob and Fab actually do, what was their actual sin and why did audiences respond the way they did?...

‘The Doc,’ Documentary About Rapper Who Lost His Voice in Car Accident, Sells to Vertical Entertainment (Exclusive)
Image
Vertical Entertainment has landed North American rights to “The Doc,” a documentary about a rap legend whose life and career was upended after a near-fatal accident.

The Doc, a hip-hop lyricist and producer who wrote for Nwa and Dr. Dre, was involved in a 1989 car crash that took his voice. “The Doc,” directed Dave Caplan, picks up 30 years later as he considers a dangerous experimental surgery that could restore his vocal cords.

Vertical will release the movie in theaters in the spring of 2023, following its world premiere at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

“The Doc is an incredible talent and visionary who helped usher the hip-hop movement into mainstream America,” Peter Jarowey, a partner at Vertical, said in a statement. “As his remarkable life is revealed on screen, it is like watching the history of hip-hop unfold before your very eyes as witnessed by industry legends who count him as a friend,...

Jim Carrey Knew Audiences Would Either Love Or Hate Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Image
It's fair to say that certain aspects of the "Ace Ventura" movies don't play well at all nowadays; even at the time, the original film was called out for its rampant homophobia and transphobia. Putting the really problematic aspects (which we'll touch upon later) aside for a moment, let's not forget what an utterly unique force of nature Jim Carrey was when he burst onto our screens as Ace for the first time.

We hadn't really seen anything like it. Roger Ebert compared him to Jerry Lewis, but he was restrained by comparison. At his peak, Steve Martin did zany just about as well as anybody and Robin Williams was capable of leaving us breathless with his whirl of free-association improvisations, but they both seemed fully in control of what they were doing. Carrey, on the other hand, seemed so wildly out there, like a live-action cartoon character.

As a shy teenager,...

Adam Levine’s Cringey Sexts Were Born to Be Memes

The D.O.C. on Finally Getting His D.U.E.
Image
Between 1988 and 1992, the D.O.C. released his platinum-selling, still-jaw-dropping debut album, No One Can Do It Better, and ghost-wrote rhymes for N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton, Eazy-e’s Eazy-Duz-It, and Dr. Dre’s The Chronic. He also cofounded Death Row Records with Dre and Suge Knight, and he mentored a young Snoop Dogg on the ins and outs of songcraft when the young rapper only knew how to freestyle. All of those achievements, though, are overshadowed in some ways by the 1989 accident in which the D.O.C., a.k.a.

Ace Ventura 3 Being Considered with Evan Peters as Son of Jim Carrey's Pet Detective?
Image
Allllrighty then! A new rumor has emerged claiming that Ace Ventura 3 is in the works, with X-Men star Evan Peters reportedly being sought after to take over as the hugely popular pet detective. Originally portrayed by Jim Carrey, the idea is to bring in Peters as the son of Carrey's character, who, much like his father, has an affinity for animals, Hawaiian shirts, and giant, pompadour styled hairdos.

While there is very little more information regarding a proposed Ace Ventura 3, this rumor does come from a fairly reliable source, and while Evan Peters has never quite shown the manic energy or rubber-faced delights of a comic of Carrey's calibre, his potential as the son of Ace Ventura is immediately clear. Evans' star is undeniably on the rise at the moment thanks to his role in several big franchises such as X-Men and American Horror Story, as well as...

Neca Unveils Ace Ventura Shady Acres Action Figure with Wiggles the Dog
Bhagyaraj, Prasanna, Andrea Jeremiah, Vishal, Vinay Rai, and Anu Emmanuel in Thupparivaalan (2017)
Our favorite pet detective is back in action figure form, as the toymaker Neca has unveiled a new Ace Ventura: Pet Detective figure set to release this summer. This won't be the first Ace Ventura figure from Neca, as the company has previously released an alternate version of Ace with his trademark hairstyle and Hawaiian shirt. This new Neca figure will depict Ace as he appears when he goes undercover at the Shady Acres mental hospital to investigate the strange disappearance of Miami Dolphins kicker Ray Finkle.

Standing at 8" tall, the Shady Acres Ace Ventura figure is fully articulated. It comes clothed in a button-up shirt, plaid shorts, and pink tutu, just as Ace wore in the movie when he feigned mental illness to gain access to the facility's storage room. The figure also comes with two interchangeable heads, so you can change Ace's facial expression depending on how you want him posed.

In Celebration of ‘Ad Astra,’ Nasa Experts Name Their Favorite Outer-Space Movies
When they’re not gazing at the cosmos or pondering extraterrestrial intelligence, astronauts watch movies, too. During a recent 20th Century Fox panel on the studio lot promoting the new film “Ad Astra” and Nasa’s involvement in creating its near-future verisimilitude, four Nasa experts talked about their favorite films that take us into the unknown.

To start things off, panel moderator and “Ad Astra” director James Gray said, “I’d like to ask a nerd question if I could. What science-fiction movies inspired you?” In awe of the true-to-science realism of films such as “Gravity” and “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which essentially predicted the iPad, Gray said, regarding the believability of his own movie before a judging audience, “I’m going to face the guillotine.”

Nasa Jet Propulsion Laboratory research scientist Laura Kerber named Fox’s 2000 animated film “Titan A.E.” as her favorite outer-space screen adventure. “I thought...

Tonya Harding in World's Dumbest (2008)
5 Videos of the Real Tonya Harding You Need to Watch to Truly Appreciate 'I, Tonya'
Tonya Harding in World's Dumbest (2008)
I, Tonya, an unconventional biopic about the unconventional, embattled yet iconic '90s figure skater, is based on "irony free, wildly contradictory and totally true" interviews with Tonya Harding and her one-time husband, Jeff Gillooly. (We're told as much via title card at the start of the movie.)

While the conflicting details of those discussions constitute the crux of the film, many key moments in Harding's life have played out in front of the cameras, allowing for a side-by-side comparison of actual events and as restaged by Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding. 5 Reasons Why 'Angry Birds' Crushed the Competition at the Box Office
So much for the three-peat.

"Captain America: Civil War" could have come out on top for the third straight weekend. It could even have lost 45 percent of last weekend's business (when it earned $72.6 million) and still outdistanced this weekend's three new wide releases. Even after three weeks, you might still have expected the Marvel mega-movie to outdistance three seemingly-undistinguished newcomers: a period action comedy starring no-longer-a-box-office-draw Russell Crowe and never-really-a-box-office-draw Ryan Gosling; a Seth Rogen comedy sequel, and a cartoon based on an app that everyone thought was really cool six years ago.

Nonetheless, "The Angry Birds Movie" knocked down "Captain America," along with "The Nice Guys" (pictured) and "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising," as easily as a short stack of pigs. The cartoon earned an estimated $39.0 million, about $1 million more than distributor Sony had predicted. "Civil War" had to settle for second, with an estimated $33.1 million (down 54 percent from a...

Wait, Vanilla Ice Performed With The Ninja Turtles Today And Didn't Do The Ninja Rap?!
Vanilla Ice performed on the Today show this morning, which sounds strange (seeing as how this is 2016), but made sense when you realize the one-time white-hot “rapper” was helping to promote an “I Love The ‘90s” tour he’s conducting with Salt N Pepa, Coolio, Tone Loc, Rob Base, Young Mc and more. So far, so good. Ice broke into his best-known song, “Ice Ice Baby.” I’m still feeling it. Then, something really strange happened. Four generic, half-hearted Heroes on a Half Shell took the stage with Vanilla Ice… and they Didn’T sing “Ninja Rap” from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II. I mean, what? What?! See for yourself. Vanilla Ice is working the crowd who had gathered outside of the Today show as part of the weekly concert series. And he’s getting ...
