Gwyneth Paltrow’s Harvey Weinstein Battles, Brad Pitt Romance, Alleged Winona Ryder Drama and More: 11 Biggest Revelations From New Biography
Image
A new biography by Amy Odell offers an unflinching look at Gwyneth Paltrow’s life and career, from Hollywood royalty to wellness mogul. “Gwyneth: The Biography,” out now, traces the Oscar-winning actor’s journey from childhood — as the daughter of actor Blythe Danner and director-producer Bruce Paltrow — to addressing the infamous allegation that she stole the “Shakespeare in Love” script from Winona Ryder. Odell draws on more than 200 interviews with people who know or have worked with Paltrow. Notably, Paltrow herself did not participate in the interviews.

Variety has reached out to Paltrow’s rep for comment.

Read on for 11 of the biggest revelations from “Gwyneth: The Biography.”

1. Paltrow’s father, director-producer Bruce Paltrow, was furious when she signed with her first manager, Joanne Horowitz, who, at the time, repped a then-unknown Kevin Spacey.

Shortly after graduating from high school in 1990, Paltrow appeared in a stage production of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,...

Rob Lowe Wants to Appear on 9-1-1: Nashville and the Producers Should Pick Up the Phone
Image
Rob Lowe was great on 9-1-1: Lone Star, and it’s a shame that the show concluded.

Now Ryan Murphy has a golden opportunity to revisit that well.

Lowe has expressed interest in appearing on the new show, 9-1-1: Nashville.

(Kevin Estrada/Fox)

The 9-1-1 universe is expanding with a new spin-off this fall.

And the new show is led by Chris O’Donnell, Jessica Capshaw, LeAnn Rimes, and Kimberly Williams-Paisley.

As a matter of fact, Don Sharpe marks O’Donnell’s first show and role following his run as G. Callen on NCIS: Los Angeles.

Having O’Donnell back on TV is going to be a fun treat, and I can’t wait for the season premiere.

(Robert Voets/CBS)

He is the perfect choice to work as a firefighter on the spin-off, and some fun names would surround him.

Unfortunately, 9-1-1: Lone Star...

'9-1-1: Nashville' Trailer Teases Flaming Tornado Crisis - Watch Now!
Image
9-1-1: Nashville released a suspenseful new trailer!

ABC just dropped the promo for the newest spinoff series of the 9-1-1 franchise. In the clip, firefighters appear to be chasing a flaming tornado while a cover of Johnny Cash‘s “Ring of Fire” plays.

Meanwhile, executive producer Tim Minear recently explained the choice behind the show’s setting.

“There were a lot of possibilities that had been talked about. I think that it’s a really interesting city with its own personality. It’s very unlike Austin. We did kind of a red state 9-1-1, but Austin is a very blue town. Nashville felt even a little bit more Southern. It also has the country music industry, and it just felt like it could be a fun place to set a piece of the franchise,” he told TVLine.

Keep reading to find out more…

“Quite frankly, Tennessee is very production-friendly.

9-1-1 Star Kenneth Choi Talks Chimney's Future in Season 9
Image
9-1-1star Kenneth Choi opens up about his character's future on the series.

Speaking to TV Insider, Choi responded to the question of whether his character, Howard "Chimney" Han, might be ready to step into the role of Captain in the upcoming ninth season of 9-1-1. "No. Chimney’s not ready for any type of dutiful responsibilities whatsoever. Never," Choi replied.

9-1-1 had plenty of major shakeups in its eighth season, not the least of which was the shocking death of Peter Krause's Captain Bobby Nash in the season's fifteenth episode, "Lab Rats." In the episode, Nash sacrifices his own life in order to save the rest of his team from a lethal, fast-moving virus. The loss of Nash hit the series' main cast of characters about as hard as they could imagine, and made some major waves with the stars of the show, as well.

Image
Although 9-1-1: Lone Star has answered its last call, Rob Lowe is ready to get back in the field as Captain Owen Strand.

The 6x Golden Globe nominee recently addressed his potential return to the character on the upcoming Nashville spinoff, for which his brother Chad Lowe serves as a co-executive producer and director.

“Well, I’ll have to ask Chad Lowe, my brother. See, all my family are gatekeepers to my own future business now,” joked Rob to Decider after starring with his son John Owen Lowe in Netflix’s 2023-’24 series Unstable.

Rob starred as Capt. Strand of Austin’s Fire Engine 126 for the Lone Star‘s five-season run, which ended on Fox in February. ‘9-1-1: Nashville’: Could Rob Lowe Reprise Role of ‘Lone Star’s Owen Strand on New Spinoff?
Image
9-1-1 crossovers have been rare over the years — due to scheduling and budget — for the original series and Lone Star, which ended after five seasons on Fox in February 2025. Besides one in which three members of the 118 (9-1-1) headed to Austin to help out with a wildfire, there were just mentions and minor characters appearing. But could that change with the newest spinoff, 9-1-1: Nashville, joining ABC’s lineup this fall? Rob Lowe, who played Captain Owen Strand for all five seasons of Lone Star, is open to it. “Well, I’ll have to ask Chad Lowe, my brother,” he told Decider. (Chad Lowe played Owen’s half-brother and directed episodes of 9-1-1 and Lone Star.) “Chad Lowe is the executive producer, director of 9-1-1: Nashville. And so I’m just waiting for my phone to ring. I mean, you know, I hired him on Lone Star. I think turnabout is fair play.

Rob Lowe Breaks His Silence on '9-1-1: Nashville' and Reveals If He'd Reprise His 'Lone Star' Character
Image
After five seasons, 9-1-1: Lone Star aired its final episode earlier this year, bidding farewell to Rob Lowe's Captain Owen Strand for what appeared to be the final time. Now, ABC is turning to a new spin-off to fill the void in 9-1-1: Nashville, complete with a new team all under the control of the canceled series's old showrunner, Rashad Raisani. Strand's story may not be over just yet, however. In a recent conversation with Decider about his Atkins partnership, Lowe was asked about the possibility of popping in for the Tennessee-based show when it premieres this fall, and not only did he express an openness to the idea, but he cited a more personal connection to the show he could hit up about making that a reality — his brother, Chad Lowe.

"Well, I’ll have to ask Chad Lowe, my brother," the star responded.

The Only Bones Episode Written By Sweets Actor John Francis Daley
Image
From 2007 to 2014 and across 138 episodes, writer, director, producer, and actor John Francis Daley played Dr. Lance Sweets on "Bones," Hart Hanson's beloved procedural series about forensic anthropologists solving cold cases. Did you know, though, that Daley also wrote one of those episodes?

The season 6 episode "The Truth in the Myth" — which was written by Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, directed by Chad Lowe, and came out in 2011 — focuses on a case involving a man who worked as a "mythbuster" named Lee Coleman (Leigh McCloskey) who, it's believed, died in some sort of incident with the mythical Chupacabra. After Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and her team keep investigating, they find all sorts of different animal traces on the corpse, including bite marks, scales from reptiles, and hair from mammals, though the pragmatic Bones remains convinced that it's all some sort of hoax.

Bones is, as usual, right. The weird...

'I Don't Want to Do This': The Flash Star Reveals Which Episode Made Him Leery
Image
Grant Gustin revealed his initial reaction to The Flash's "Duet" episode. Fans consider that Supergirl crossover a highlight of the Arrowverse, especially Kara Danvers and Barry Allen's musical number.

The Flash was the best show in The CW's Arrowverse. Fans went through a rollercoaster of emotions across nine seasons of The Flash, especially its crossover episodes. Season 3's "Duet" caught audiences by surprise, however; the plot involved Kara Danvers and Barry Allen trapped in a musical dreamworld. "Duet" was surreal because it broke from the show's grounded narrative, but audiences loved the novelty. Critics praised "Duet" for its lighthearted tone and endearing ensemble, but Grant Gustin had reservations about filming that episode; he told Michael Rosenbaum that "Duet" was an odd turn for the show.

The Flash Star John Wesley Shipp Recalls 'Immediate Connection' With Grant Gustin

The CW's The Flash Star John Wesley Shipp has talked about the immediate connection he had with his co-star and fellow Barry Allen actor Grant Gustin. Shipp starred as the titular DC character in 1990's The Flash CBS series before returning to play Gustin's father, Henry Allen, in the Arrowverse.

The Flash franchise veteran Shipp discussed the length of his tenure as the Scarlet Speedster and his relationship with his co-star Gustin at Megacon. In response to Cbr's question about how long he has been involved with the character, he stated, "35 years. As many years as Grant Gustin has been alive." Shipp continued, "It was an immediate connection. This is a guy who's a truthful actor. He knew I'd been the Flash, and I knew what he was taking on." In addition to playing Barry Allen in CBS' The Flash and Henry Allen in The CW's iteration, Shipp also starred as Jay Garrick,...

'The Only Reason I Did a Decent Job': Grant Gustin Explains How He Kept The Flash Fresh
Image
Having played the iconic DC character the Flash longer than anyone, Grant Gustin has now given insight into how he kept the Scarlet Speedster fresh for so long. Gustin played the Barry Allen incarnation of the character in The CW's The Flash for nine seasons and also appeared in crossovers and other shows across the Arrowverse.

Gustin told Cbr at Megacon that the show retained its freshness because he took the responsibility of playing the Flash seriously. "It was never an intentional thought about how to keep it fresh," he began. "I'm a very scene-by-scene actor. I wanted to keep it realistic. The only reason I did a decent job with the show is I took it very seriously. Try not to suck." Gustin's dedication to playing the Crimson Comet has always been evident in interactions with fans throughout his years of playing the character in the show that ended its run two years ago.

TV Shows With The Best Pilots And The Worst Finales
Image
When a TV show has an unforgettable pilot episode, it instantly pulls viewers in for what's to come next. Whether it be the characters, the high-quality production, or the unexpected twists, people grow curious about where the story will go. However, if the series finale is disappointing and poorly conceived, the ending could leave a noticeable stain on the show's legacy and become a part of television infamy.

Shockingly, these TV shows had the best of both worlds since they started so strongly to pull viewers in, only for the final episode to cause them to question whether the investment was worth it. They became the proper definition of having a journey that is far better than the destination. While that first episode will always remain a classic, fans prefer not to think about the underwhelming finale. These criteria are applied to multiple popular shows, such as Game of Thrones,...

Bones Had a Forgotten Crossover With This 11-Year-Old Supernatural Drama
Image
TV crossover events have seen plenty of ups and downs over the years. For every "Crisis on Infinite Earths" or "Scoobynatural," television studios typically make half a dozen misguided cash-ins in a desperate attempt to expand each show's unique viewing audience. So, where does that leave the often-forgotten conversion between one of Fox's most beloved procedural series, Bones, and one of their most forgotten, Sleepy Hollow?

"SleepyBones," as some fans took to calling it, saw forensic anthropologist Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and her longtime FBI partner Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) team up with the no-nonsense FBI agent Abbie Mills (Nicole Berharie) and her 18th Century time-traveling partner, Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison), to investigate a crime that only their combined might can potentially solve. This unexpected collaboration was a shock to fans of both Bones and Sleepy Hollow, and it ultimately resulted in one of the strangest — and most underappreciated — crossover episodes in TV history.

A Bones Guest Star Shares A Unique Distinction With David Boreanaz And Emily Deschanel
Image
It is not uncommon for TV stars to direct episodes of the series on which they appear. Alan Alda, Mike Farrell, Harry Morgan and David Ogden Stiers all directed more than one episode of "M*A*S*H;" Peter Bonerz became a prolific director of television shows and films after directing 29 episodes of "The Bob Newhart Show;" and Penny Marshall might never have brought us such big screen classics as "Big" and "A League of Their Own" had she not started out directing on "Laverne & Shirley."

For the directing curious, the set of a long-running television show is a great place to cut one's teeth, so it's no surprise that two members of the Jeffersonian Institute Medico-Legal Lab found their way behind the camera during the 12-season run of "Bones." The most frequent guest in video village was David Boreanaz, who played the hard-charging FBI Agent Seeley Booth. He...

Image
9-1-1 guest star Lou Ferrigno Jr. reveals that his return as Tommy Kinard may depend on another series. It's in the sixth episode of 9-1-1 season 8 that Tommy and Buck (Oliver Stark) break up. Ferrigno's character decides to end the relationship, gently, essentially believing that Buck is moving too fast and putting too much stock in a relationship that isn't built to last. The episode, "Confessions," ends with Buck sharing a beer with his best friend Eddie (Ryan Guzman) on the couch.

In an interview with Fangirlish, Ferrigno addressed whether the couch scene meant that Eddie and Buck would finally be getting together. Although the actor doesn't answer that question directly, he talks about how his 9-1-1 return depends on his involvement with the CBS action drama S.W.A.T. since he's been recurring on that series since the beginning as Donovan Rocker. The 911: Lone Star bosses have addressed how they're going to handle the surprise exit of Grace and what it means for season 5!

Season 4 left off with some dramatic moments: Tk and Carlos got married despite Carlos mourning his murdered father; Owen aided his dying half-brother (Chad Lowe) in taking his own life; Tommy was getting more serious with her pastor boyfriend; and, most importantly, Judd (Jim Parrack) leaving the 126 to care for his son Wyatt (Jackson Pace) who was paralyzed after being hit by a car.

‘9-1-1: Lone Star’ Boss Previews Owen’s Grief, Judd Without Grace, Lieutenant Competition & More
Image
9-1-1: Lone Star is kicking off its fifth and final season with a massive emergency: a train derailment (and other rescues) over its first three episodes. It’ll have been about 16 months since the Season 4 finale aired (the strikes delayed the drama’s return), and about a year in-show when the action picks up, and Owen (Rob Lowe) is still grieving his half-brother’s (Chad Lowe) death, Judd (Jim Parrack) has resigned, leaving the 126 without a lieutenant (and therefore some competition), Grace’s absence needs to be explained, and what about marriage coming up for Tommy (Gina Torres) and Trevor (D.B. Woodside)? Below, co-showrunner Rashad Raisani previews what’s coming for all that and more ahead of the September 23 premiere. (Don’t worry: There’s more scoop to come!) You’re kicking off with this massive, three-episode train derailment. What can you preview about that, and who from...

Five Road Trip Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
Summer is winding to a close, though the blistering sun has not yet received the memo. That means the final days of vacationing or summer road trips are in order. Of course, horror has taught us the myriad of ways that the open road can induce abject terror and stress; flat tires are the least of your summer worries in horror.

Films like The Hitcher, Near Dark, and Splinter highlight how car troubles, creepy rest stops, and seedy motels don’t compare to humanity’s worst- human or otherwise- prowling the highways.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to road trip horror movies. These five titles exploit our travel anxieties by pitting their protagonists against vampires, cannibals, psychopaths, and the devil himself over vast stretches of highway.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Rob Lowe in The Grinder (2015)
Rob Lowe: Brat Pack to Backpacks
Rob Lowe in The Grinder (2015)
Many young stars were rising in Hollywood during the 1980s. It was one of the most critical decades in movie production due to its switch from focusing on films directed at adults to tween and teen flicks.

The '80s was an excellent decade for young movie fans. However, some movie stars, including Rob Lowe, had less fun, especially after journalist David Blum labeled them "The Brat Pack" in 1985.

Here's how Rob Lowe went from being a Brat Packer to being a family man and changed how he was perceived in Hollywood.

The Humble Origins of the Lowes

The term "Hollywood Icon" didn't always apply to Rob Lowe.

He was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on March 17, 1964, but spent most of his childhood living in Dayton, Ohio.

‘9-1-1: Lone Star’: Rob Lowe Talks Major Opening Emergency, Chad Lowe Returning & More
Image
If you’ve been (im)patiently waiting for 9-1-1: Lone Star‘s return, you’re not alone. Rob Lowe, who stars as Captain Owen Strand, is eager for Season 5, on Fox‘s fall 2024 schedule, to get out there already. “We’ve been shooting for two or three months now, so I want to be able to see it already,” he told TV Insider at the network’s upfront red carpet. The Season 4 finale, which saw T.K. (Ronen Rubinstein) and Carlos (Rafael L. Silva) get married, also featured a couple of tragedies: Carlos’ father was murdered, and Owen sat by his brother Robert’s (Chad Lowe) side for his death (his Huntington’s disease was progressively getting worse). It aired in May 2023; 9-1-1: Lone Star was not part of Fox’s schedule for the 2023-2024 season at all after the strikes, instead pushed to fall 2024. But...

Emmys mystery: How often do cast additions to drama series win?
Image
Upon sweeping the four main drama acting categories at the 2021 Emmy Awards, “The Crown” stars Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Gillian Anderson, and Tobias Menzies all joined a special roster of lead or supporting TV academy honorees who were not part of their shows’ original casts. As members of the expansive Netflix series’ second of three distinct ensembles, this quartet and their co-stars were replaced ahead of season five by a new group of actors, some of whom could be added to said exclusive winners club later this year.

According to Gold Derby’s odds, the performer from the sixth and final season of “The Crown” with the best shot at Emmy glory is supporting female frontrunner Elizabeth Debicki. She played the role of Princess Diana for two seasons, finishing the job started by younger season four cast member Emma Corrin. The characters embodied by predicted nominees Imelda Staunton (Queen Elizabeth II...

10 TV Characters Who Were Recast After Just 1 Season
Image
Recasting a character in a TV show can have significant effects on the trajectory of the series. Creative differences or a lack of audience connection can prompt the need for a recast. Recasting can inject new life into a series and allow showrunners to align characters with their creative vision.

Casting is a crucial aspect in creating a TV show, as an actor's ability to bring a character to life can significantly impact the success of the series. Occasionally, creative differences or a lack of audience connection may prompt the need to recast a character after the show has begun. Introducing a new actor to portray a character audiences have already started to know can have intriguing effects on the show's trajectory, for better or worse. When a series first begins, the cast and crew are still finding their footing.

During this initial period of adjustment in the first season,...

Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1993: ‘Picket Fences’ and ‘Seinfeld’ clean up
Image
It was a night of firsts, lasts and an upset win as TV’s finest gathered together to celebrate the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1993. Even the host made history — in more ways than one. Read on for our Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1993.

For the first time ever, the ceremony was hosted solely by a female — who was also, ironically, the unluckiest actress in Emmy history. Up for her 13th Emmy nomination that evening, Angela Lansbury guided the ceremony with her usual grace. Lansbury passed away in 2022, with the record of most Best Drama Actress bids as well as the record for most overall nominations without a win at 18. However, she wasn’t the only one nominated at this ceremony who has never won despite numerous nominations, or the only one to lay claim to an unfortunate record.

After a stellar year in 1992, reigning Best Drama...

Chad Lowe at an event for 24 (2001)
9-1-1: Lone Star Season 4 Episode 15 Review: Donors
Chad Lowe at an event for 24 (2001)
First things first, we got a renewal! It's always a relief when you can enjoy the rest of the season without fear that the series' future will hang in the balance.

They're hitting us hard with some Grace Ryder content on the back end, and 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 4 Episode 15 predominately focused on how a case got under her skin and prompted her to take down an organ trafficking ring with help from Carlos.

Carlos and Grace are one of the most underrated duos in this series.

We were also dealt an emotionally crushing blow to Owen as it saw Chad Lowe's return as Owen's half-brother, Robert, with some devastating health news that could affect both Owen and T.K.

And there was also a special reunion treat for Firefly fans with Adam Baldwin guest-starring and even sharing a brief scene with Gina Torres.

There was a...

Chad Lowe returns to his brother Rob Lowe’s drama as Robert in “Donors,” and at first, there’s definitely joy. Owen’s half-brother meets his nephew T.K. (Ronen Rubinstein) — who seems to love having an “Uncle Robert” — and T.K.’s fiancé Carlos (Rafael Silva) over dinner. Robert shows photos of his daughters (and hesitates with the name of the second) before handing over “relics” from his and Owen’s father, including a journal for T.K. to get to know his grandfather. But then, at the end of the episode, we find out why Robert really wants to spend whatever time he can with his brother. As the two share their father’s “most prized possession” (an expensive ...

9-1-1: Lone Star Puts Grace In Danger, Deals Owen a Devastating Blow
Image
As far as 9-1-1: Lone Star goes, it doesn’t get much more more intense — or heartbreaking — than Tuesday’s episode.

The hour largely centered around a kidney harvesting ring in Austin, one to which Grace developed a personal connection after a victim she helped over the phone ended up dying in the hospital. When the authorities looked at this young woman more like a criminal than a victim, as is the case with so many Black and brown women, Grace felt she had no choice but to step in and find the guy who took her kidney.
