Saw Movies Ranked: From Worst to Best
Image
Saw is the series that just won’t stop. Some horror fans love these movies, others write them off as nothing but torture porn, but movie-goers usually show up to give them healthy box office returns. Not only did the most recent film, Saw X, wind up making over $100 million worldwide, but it also earned the franchise’s best reviews since the original. But, how does the entire series rank? You can check out our Saw Movies Ranked list below – then let us know how you would rank the movies by leaving a comment!

Saw 3D (2010)

Envisioned as the “Final Chapter”, the seventh Saw movie was released in 3D so it could throw some of the biggest, most over-the-top traps of the franchise right in the viewer’s face. Saw 3D was directed by Saw VI’s Kevin Greutert, who was forced to replace Saw V director David Hackl just...

James Gunn Cast Bradley Cooper for ‘Superman’ Cameo Because He ‘Could Walk in the Footsteps’ of Brando
Image
Somehow, after years of steady press and endless speculation, DC Studios and Warner Bros. were able to keep one major casting coup a surprise for audiences right up to the movie’s premiere this week… if you haven’t seen “Superman” yet, read the headline, and still aren’t exactly sure who Bradley Cooper portrays, now would be the perfect time to stop reading.

Just minutes into the movie, Cooper appears as Jor-El — yes, Supes’ dad, who was once embodied by the legendary Marlon Brando (and his interesting pronunciation of “Krypton”). Alongside “Westworld” star Angela Sarafyan as the hero’s mother Lara, he appears in a pre-recorded message to his son that Superman discovers in the Fortress of Solitude.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gunn said he was intent on casting an actor of Brando’s magnitude for his version of “Superman.” “I needed somebody who could play Jor-El,...

Pierce Brosnan’s New Western Debuts With an Unholy Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Pierce Brosnan started the year strong with his performance opposite Tom Hardy in Guy Ritchie’s MobLand, but the former James Bond actor has just debuted a new project that is heading down a dangerous path. Brosnan stars alongside Samuel L. Jackson in The Unholy Trinity, a Western following a man caught between a sheriff determined to keep the peace and a stranger intent on burning it down. The Unholy Trinity debuted in select theaters this weekend, and the film has earned a disastrous 17% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences were much kinder to the film, reviewing it at 65% on the Popcornmeter. These scores come from 18 and 100 reviews at the time of writing, respectively, so they are subject to change as more reviews come in.

Lee Zachariah wrote the script for The Unholy Trinity, and Richard Gray directed the film. Gray most recently directed Murder at Yellowstone City, another...

Braveheart at 30: Mel Gibson’s gory, hokey Oscar winner plays like a biblical epic
Braveheart
The 1995 best picture winner is less interested in historical fact and more in rousing fantasy and makes for a telling portrait of its troubled maker

For a storied best picture Oscar winner and dorm-wall poster staple of the 1990s and beyond, it’s a little surprising how modest Braveheart’s success was when it opened in theaters 30 years ago. Though it powered through a mild opening to become a solid summer hit, on the 1995 charts it sits below Father of the Bride Part II and Congo (though congratulations are in order; it did edge out both Grumpier Old Men and Mortal Kombat). Even among other Mel Gibson vehicles from the 90s, you might be surprised to learn that Maverick, Conspiracy Theory and Payback all posted stronger numbers.

But Braveheart stuck around, both in theaters and in the public consciousness. It wasn’t necessarily tipped as an awards contender at the...

Saw IV (2007) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
Saw III could have been the end of the series. It killed off it’s primary antagonist in Jigsaw and wrapped up everything it could. That’s not how horror franchises work though, do they? What would the original creators have to do with this movie? Sit back and prepare for another game as we find out what happened to Saw IV.

Mel Gibson Was Almost Crushed by a Horse Filming 'Braveheart'
Image
Mel Gibson’s 1995 epic Braveheart is often praised for its sweeping and brutal battle scenes, and Gibson’s portrayal of Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace. However it was also the movie that saw Gibson believe that he was about to meet his maker in order to deliver the most realistic movie possible, all thanks to a stunt involving a horse.

By the mid-1990s, Gibson was already an established Hollywood star, but Braveheart marked a significant leap from a regular action hero to a respected director as well as actor. Filming large-scale battle sequences required plenty of planning, especially when the stunt work involved many live horses being used on set.

During a chaotic battle sequence, Gibson performed one stunt that required him to fall off his horse, but in the moment, he almost ended up falling under the beast and had to be saved by his stunt double. As...

The 30 Best Spy/Espionage TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Genres within television and film have evolved over the years, with several combining to form new genres and subgenres. One such instance has been spy and espionage TV and movies, which incorporate elements of thrillers, dramas, and more action-oriented fare. Television makes a good outlet for the genre, allowing for first-rate action without requiring the big budget of a movie, and able to develop slow-burn plots over many episodes instead of one two-hour story.

More often than not, spy TV shows emphasize the genre's action elements, comparable to movies like James Bond. More rarely, though, shows will lean more toward the espionage side of these stories, in which spies and agents are sent deep into the heart of a convoluted and intriguing plot. The best shows in the genre balance the two, combining harrowing thrills with fascinating characters and clever plots.

Updated on December 24, 2024 by Robert Vaux: The spy genre...

Saw III (2006) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
Over 10 films to date and an 11th scheduled for late September of 2025, Saw is a franchise that rivals most in terms of both output and fandom. It had a run of 7 straight films over 7 years which began with the out of nowhere Saw in 2004 and culminating with Saw 3D in 2010. Its consistency may have trailed off temporarily with scattered entries following in 2017, 2021, and 2023, but the series as a whole is well known and has branched off into nearly every conceivable type of media. From comics and novels to video games and toys, Saw may just be primed to start another legendary run in the 2020s. Saw III was a runaway train that is still the highest grossing film in the series, but it was almost not even made after the original creators were done. With traps that were some of the most creative and even including Tobin Bell’s favorite...

Did You Know Braveheart 2 Came Out In 2020? It's Not What You'd Expect
Image
Robert the Bruce was released in 2020, an unofficial Braveheart 2 that continues the story in an unexpected way. While Braveheart ended with the death of William Wallace, the sequel picks up with another actor from the original movie in the main role. Angus Macfadyen reprises his role as Robert from the critically acclaimed 1995 epic, in the earlier moments of Roberts life before the final battle of Bannockburn. Where Braveheart follows the life of Gibson's William Wallace, Robert the Bruce follows the life of Macfadyens downtrodden Robert before his rise as king.

Similar to Mel Gibson's Braveheart, which the star also directed, Robert the Bruce was written for the screen by Macfadyen alongside writer Eric Belgau. Although not a direct sequel to Braveheart, Robert the Bruce operates as a sequel in its own right as it details Scotlands ongoing war with England as they fight for their independence. Both films...

The Wolf and the Lamb: Cassandra Scerbo, Adrianne Palicki star in folk horror Western
Image
As movies like Bone Tomahawk and Tremors 4 have proven, horror and Westerns are two great tastes that taste great together. I always like to hear that another horror / Western blend is in the works – so I was glad to see The Hollywood Reporter announce that the folk horror thriller The Wolf and the Lamb, which is set “during the western expansion of the 1870s,” is coming our way. Cassandra Scerbo of the Sharknado franchise and Adrianne Palicki of The Orville star in the film, which is currently in production, with filming taking place in Montana.

The Wolf and the Lamb marks the feature writing and directing debut of Michael Schilf. Scerbo is taking on the role of a widowed school teacher searching for her only son, who is the latest child to go missing in a tight-knit mining camp. But when the son miraculously returns, he is more monster than man.

Best Saw Traps: We look back at the franchise’s gnarliest moments
Isan Beomhyun Lee in Saw X (2023)
Saw X appears to have reinvigorated the Saw franchise, so while we wait for Saw XI to come along, we here at Arrow in the Head have decided to take a look back at the previous films in the series to compile a list of the Best Saw Traps. There were many traps to choose from, but the idea here was to narrow it down to the best trap (or trap scene) from each individual movie. Check out our picks below, and let us know what your favorite traps were in the comments section.

Saw – Reverse Bear Trap

Of course this one had to make the list, since it’s the most popular trap in the entire franchise and the one most strongly remembered by the general audience. The reverse bear trap caught so much attention when it showed up in the first film, they brought it back in a couple of the sequels.

10 Movie Battle Scenes Criticized For Accuracy & Realism
Image
Some war movies exaggerate battle scenes for dramatic effect, leading to inaccuracies in tactics, weapons, and historical details. Movies prioritizing themes of heroism may sacrifice accuracy in depictions of warfare during major conflicts. In some cases, the story prioritizes themes and moral lessons over historical realism in action movies.

Movies about warfare have been known to exaggerate how certain battles would happen for dramatic effect, which has given rise to criticism of some battle scenes for their accuracy and realism. The most inaccurate war movies ever feature plenty of scenes like this, which can be picked apart regarding tactics, weapons in use, and historical details about who was involved. Many critiqued battle scenes are from movies claiming to be historical dramas. However, experts have also offered their takes on works of fiction allegedly depicting real military tactics.

Some movies that are seemingly military propaganda are less concerned with strict accuracy,...

Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast Horizon: An American Saga Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. Kevin Costner on physical media: “DVD is not dead”
Image
We’re big champions of physical media here at JoBlo, and despite ongoing claims that it will soon be going the way of the Dodo, we’ve yet to see its demise. Kevin Costner is also a big fan of physical media, and when asked by Deadline about the supposed “death of the DVD,” he was quick to jump to its defence.

“Death of the what? DVD is not dead, at all,” Kevin Costner said. “That’s what they’d have you believe. Maybe it’s not making the same amount of money, but just try to go ask for that from the studio. They won’t give that up. A lot of people that like my movies, they can’t get to a theater, and they’re waiting for that moment. You can’t make your film for the opening weekend. You have to make it for its life.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga blazes a trail at CinemaCon with an extended look at the Western epic
Image
Hold onto your horses, folks! Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is riding into CinemaCon 2024 to share the latest about the Yellowstone and Dances With Wolves star’s Western epic. On Monday, we learned the first part of Horizon: An American Saga, which will debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19. Still, attendees moseying into CinemaCon got a new look at the sprawling drama of how settlers won the West.

During the Warner Bros. panel, Costner addressed the CinemaCon crowd, saying the movie is a bit about the promise of America. The idea was that if you were mean enough, tough enough, you could take what you wanted, but in the process, you stepped on people who had been here for 1000 years. But the film does not pass judgment, and that story, to him, was drama.

Speaking about making the movie, Costner said he likes “Journey” movies. He...

Kevin Costner Hopes ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ Can Be Binged in Theaters Someday
Image
Kevin Costner is hoping a few years from now, moviegoers will have the opportunity to binge four Horizon movies in theaters.

“Maybe a year and a half, two years from now, they will come (to theaters) for 12 hours,” he told the assembled crowd of theater owners Tuesday at CinemaCon, where he teased his two-part Horizon films.

So far, only two of his planned four films have been made, he acknowledged, but he has two more scripts ready to go, should the risky film project he helped finance be successful.

“When I think about the promise of America, there was a promise out here, if you could go. If you were tough enough, if you were mean enough, if you were resourceful enough, if you were lucky enough, you could take what you wanted in America,” Costner said of the appeal of the American West. “That promise meant that we step...

The Greatest Movies About Rebellion
Image
Since the earliest days of cinema, rebellion has been a consistent basis for great storytelling, especially through a historical lens. Ranging from iconic sci-fi space operas to examinations of true events, revolting against oppression and tyranny is one of the most compelling types of story there is. These can also lead to brilliant action sequences, as war and rebellion often go hand-in-hand.

Various rebel struggles, both real and fictional, can inspire audiences through their use of heroes who battle against the odds for a righteous cause. Seeing these heroes fight for what is right, often against insurmountable odds, can remind viewers of the power of courage. Whether these stories are told in the far reaches of space or medieval kingdoms, they all unite people around the desire for freedom and independence.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – new trailer, still no UK distributor
Kevin Costner in Rumor Has It... (2005)
Kevin Costner’s hugely ambitious western saga arrives this summer: here’s the new trailer, but no UK release yet.

Regular readers of this site may be already aware just how much I’m looking forward to the most ambitious Kevin Costner project in years. It’s Horizon: An American Saga, a series of four films that Costner is part-funding. Just as with his last directorial effort, the brilliant 2003 western Open Range, he’s independently funded the movie, and brought in distributors afterwards.

In the US, it’s New Line Cinema – and thus Warner Bros – that’s going to be releasing the first two films, both of which are coming out this summer. The first lands in June, the second lands in August, and both are getting US cinema releases.

As far as I’ve been able to ascertain, and heck I’ve been looking, there’s been no deal...

Kevin Costner Drops Trailer for Horizon Western — Was It Worth Leaving Yellowstone For?
Image
Kevin Costner on Monday shared on socials a first trailer for Horizon, the two-part Western epic that played a role in his growing frustrations with his Yellowstone experience.

Before the WGA strike began last May, Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan had completed scripts for the back half of the show’s fifth season that did not include Costner, whose alleged demands had been widely reported. Per the industry-insider newsletter Puck, Costner’s reps later expressed his desire to return for Season 5B and possibly more.

Kevin Costner drops trailer for his Western epic ‘Horizon’ [Watch]
Image
Part one of “Horizon: An American Saga,” the multi-film Western epic that Kevin Costner left “Yellowstone” to make, will hit theaters on June 28, with part two to follow on August 16. Warner Bros. released a trailer for the two-part film on Monday.

The trailer promises a sprawling, colorful, violent Western film about Manifest Destiny. It’s about the settling of the titular town during the years of the Civil War, as the American frontier pushes westward and settlers come into conflict with the people indigenous to the land. “There’s no army on this Earth that are going to stop those wagons coming,” a Union Army officer played by Costner’s “Yellowstone” co-star Danny Huston warns in something like the trailer’s thesis statement.

Costner wrote the script for “Horizon” with Jon Baird, produces with Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard, directs, and stars. It’s his first time directing a film since 2003’s “Open Range,...
