Bill Maher has a history of sounding the alarm on what he sees as the excesses of “woke culture,” and on the August 1 episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, he once again turned his monologue into a takedown of online outrage, this time over Sydney Sweeney’s jeans ad.
“In other uncomfortable racial news, sad news, we found out this week that Sydney Sweeney is a Nazi,” Maher said, sarcastically. “No, she’s not, but you’ve seen the ad. There she is, dressed like Jay Leno in all blue denim. And she talks about the fact that she has blue eyes and then says she has great jeans, you know, because she’s wearing jeans! But according to the woke people, this means she’s a white supremacist," the comedian said, giving his assessment of the controversy.
Maher continued, imagining a way to justify the outrage. "It also...

What was supposed to be a fashion ad has become a full-blown controversy. Sydney Sweeney’s latest campaign with American Eagle features a simple pun, “great jeans”, but it’s the double meaning, paired with her appearance and the tone of the ad, that sent the internet into meltdown.
In the campaign, Sweeney narrates a moody voiceover about traits being passed down through genes, only to reveal she’s talking about denim. Cute, right? Not everyone thought that.
Sydney Sweeney x American Eagle, oh my god. pic.twitter.com/tDkeGT9R7G

People slammed the ad for being tone-deaf, arguing that using a blonde, blue-eyed actress to talk about “great jeans” flirted with imagery and language uncomfortably close to white supremacist and Nazi rhetoric.
Soon, everything from there went downhill. People also dug up old photos of her family in Maga hats, which only added more fuel to the fire,...

Real Time with Bill Maher returns with a new episode tonight, Aug. 1, and Bill Maher has no shortage of headline-making material to tackle in his opening monologue. The only question is whether Maher will focus his attention on President Donald Trump or the state of late-night TV.
This week’s biggest bombshell centers on President Donald Trump’s connection to Jeffrey Epstein. Leaked footage from Trump’s 1993 wedding and recently unsealed court documents have reignited scrutiny of their relationship, especially among late-night TV hosts. Will Maher follow suit and hammer Trump over the connection? Or will the Real Time host look to bruh past the scandal?
For Maher, this is prime monologue territory if he wants to take it.. If so, expect him to take aim at Trump’s evasions and contradictions, using the moment to question not just Trump’s credibility, but how the media and political institutions continue...

Well, Jimmy Fallon’s shtick on standing up to Trump lasted exactly four seconds. It seems the host is taking perpetual gambling addict Jay Leno’s neutrality advice, which was “Why shoot for just half an audience all the time?” Fallon is really reaching for the other half of the audience with one his guests next week: Greg Gutfeld.
The Fox News late-night show host is slated to guest on The Tonight Show next week. For those not familiar with Gutfeld! because of where it airs, it’s actually drawing in a bigger audience than any other late-night program. For the second quarter of 2025, the show drew in 3.289 million views, far surpassing The Late Show (2.417 million), Jimmy Kimmel Live! (1.772 million) and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (1.188 million).
Gutfeld’s not the most watched because he’s using his air time on Fox News to cater to people from all political beliefs.

Bill Maher has never been my comedic cup of tea. If I wanted to hear an Islamophobe who hated when women finished sentences talk for an hour straight, I’d go back to my college ethics class. Maher has put me in the uncomfortable position of saying “Hell yeah, Ben Affleck.” Not a good feeling.
You know who liked this reasoning? Trump. He posted the clip to his Truth Social account just a few hours later, writing a short “Thanks, Bill!” Just when we thought Trump was starting to lose his posse of podcast bros with Andrew Schulz’s increasingly shaky faith, the president appears to gain another member. Trump is like Thanos, except instead of infinity stones, it’s just guys talking for two hours straight in front of exposed brick. An equally existential threat to humanity, if you ask me.

I assure you, this movie is real.
In 1986, Sondra Locke made her directorial debut with "Ratboy," a ridiculous fantasy film about Nikki (Locke), a former window dresser who discovers an unusual rat-person living in the landfills outside of Los Angeles. The rat boy, named Eugene, has large fuzzy ears, all-black eyes, whiskers, ratlike claws, an elongated snout, and mighty, ever-growing incisors. The makeup effects for Eugene were conceived by creature mastermind Rick Baker, while the actual character was physically played by actor Sharon Baird and voiced by Gordon Anderson, Locke's husband. The movie follows Nikki's attempts to pull Eugene out of his dump-dwelling life and, like in "The Elephant Man," into polite society. Eugene is depicted as skittish but sensitive, while the tone of "Ratboy" is weirdly melancholy. The film also starred Robert Townsend, Gerritt Graham, Louie Anderson, John Witherspoon, and Bill Maher.

It’s really easy to dislike Bill Maher. The Real Time host’s anti-vaxxer beliefs and Bff status with Kid Rock is already enough to make your eyes roll, but Maher has found yet another way to be weird — and this time, he’s victimizing legendary musician Billy Joel with it.
During Joel’s recent appearance on Club Random, the “Piano Man” singer got an unprompted earful about the political commentator’s attempt at songwriting: a track called “The World Makes Us Lie.” Though Joel was initially impressed with the concept of Maher’s song, saying, “Okay, that’s a good premise,” Joel seemingly soured on the idea after learning what, exactly, the world allegedly made Maher lie about.
“It was about someone in a relationship with someone who the world deemed age inappropriate,” the 69-year-old explained, adding in a suspicious “I don’t know where I got the idea” for good measure.

Since Billy Joel revealed his diagnosis with the brain disorder Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (Nph) in May, only third parties have given updates about his condition. Now, the Piano Man himself has opened up about his current health.
“I feel fine. My balance sucks,” Joel said on the most recent episode of Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast. “It’s like being a boat… It used to be called ‘water on the brain.’ Now, it’s called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.”
Continuing, Joel said doctors are unsure of the cause of his condition. “They don’t really know… I thought it must be from drinking,” he said. “I feel good. They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I’m feeling.”

Is Stephen Colbert's just-announced cancellation the proverbial canary in the coal mine for late-night television? That question is top of mind after CBS announced its shocking decision to bring The Late Show With Stephen Colbert — and the entire Late Show franchise — to an end in May 2026. The host broke the news during Thursday night's episode, remarking: "I'm not being replaced. This is all just going away."
In a joint statement, CBS execs George Cheeks, Amy Reisenbach and David Stapf said the decision to get out of late-night television was a financial one. "It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount," they emphasized. But that sentiment didn't sway others from connecting Late Show's cancellation to CBS parent Paramount's controversial decision to settle a defamation suit brought by President Donald Trump ahead of the studio's long-planned merger with Skydance Media.

Sean “Diddy” Combs was found guilty of two prostitution-related counts in federal court on Wednesday, but not guilty of the far more severe racketeering and two sex-trafficking charges. His lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo, told Judge Arun Subramanian that “Combs has been given his life by the jury” in a post-verdict statement. If convicted on the racketeering and sex-trafficking charges, he faced a potential life sentence. Combs seemed to think the same, cheering on his way out of the courtroom after the verdict.

Updated, with Fox News response: California Gov. Gavin Newsom filed a $787 million lawsuit against Fox News on Friday, seeking $787 million in damages and citing, among other things, host Jesse Watters’ claim that he lied about a phone call the governor made with Donald Trump.
“No more lies,” Newsom wrote on X, announcing the lawsuit.
The damages figure is, at the very least, symbolic. That is about the same amount that the network settled Dominion Voting Systems’ lawsuit two years ago. The election systems company had sued for defamation over the network’s amplification of false claims it rigged 2020 election results.
Read Gavin Newsom’s lawsuit against Fox News.
In the lawsuit, Newsom’s legal team wrote that the litigation “concerns Fox’s willingness to protect President Trump from his own false statements by smearing his political opponent Governor Newsom in a dispute over when the two last spoke during a period of national strife.

In the lawsuit, Newsom’s legal team wrote that the litigation “concerns Fox’s willingness to protect President Trump from his own false statements by smearing his political opponent Governor Newsom in a dispute over when the two last spoke during a period of national strife.

Even if you have an Egot, it doesn't mean you can stop collecting awards! On the Monday edition of The View, Friday moderator Joy Behar announced that Whoopi Goldberg would be absent this week as she'll be in Italy to collect a prestigious award.
“We are all jealous of Whoopi today because she’s in Italy — I hope it’s 100 degrees…She’s in Italy accepting an award for her book Bits and Pieces, so she will be out this week,” the long-time co-host revealed after easing viewers' minds.
With Whoopi out, Ana Navarro will be sitting in for the week in Behar's usual spot. But have no fear, Whoopi will return to the Hot Topics' table on July 7th following the traditional July 4th summer break.

Bill Maher attempted to clarify his political views during an episode of his Club Random podcast. The Real Time host also had a bleak prediction about the future of the Democratic Party.
Listening to Maher's monologues, interviews, and panel discussions would lead one to assume the comedian is a Democrat. While he's never hesitated to criticize the party, he's been much harsher on Republicans and the conservative movement.
But the late-night TV host doesn't want to be labeled as a Democrat. He said as much during his Club Random podcast episode with actor Esai Morales.
“I never was a Democrat to begin with,” Maher said. “I always like caucus with the Democrats and I generally vote for them."

“I just wanna watch Nathan Fielder”– that’s the rallying cry of HBO Max users frustrated with Bill Maher’s growing presence on the platform. While Maher’s Real Time has long been a staple of HBO’s late-night slate, his critics are speaking louder than ever, calling out what they see as out-of-touch takes and outdated political comedy. The backlash, folks, isn’t only about content. It’s about tone, platform priorities, and the kind of voices audiences want elevated in 2025.
With creators like Nathan Fielder offering experimental, emotionally layered comedy, many viewers feel HBO Max is stuck pushing the wrong brand of relevance. And that disconnect has sparked real talk about boycotts, programming direction, and shifting audience loyalty.

Larry Charles says that The Dictator wasn’t as good as Borat because Sacha Baron Cohen started taking too much advice from the A-list entertainment business crowd instead of following his comedic instincts. Was Pamela Anderson their Yoko Ono?
As a veteran comedy writer, director and producer, Charles’ fingerprints are all over American humor, but for all his work on seminal projects like Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, his most significant influence on contemporary comedy might just come from his time directing Baron Cohen in Borat, Bruno and The Dictator. The duo’s rebellious, revolutionary, in-your-face style of comedy filmmaking inspired countless other renegade, gonzo comics to go out in the world and test their chaotic characters out on unsuspecting strangers, but according to Charles’ recent comments, following the success of Borat and projects like it, Baron Cohen shifted his focus from transgressive trailblazing to traditional show business Bs years ago.

What’s Bill Maher’s latest peeve? “Clueless, useless” dads in pop culture — and on broadcast TV in particular — who, in the comedian’s mind, are part of a problem that sends teen boys into the misogynistic online groups known as the manosphere. “Let’s make the Father’s Day we just celebrated the last one that takes place in a culture where dads have become such punching bags — literally the last demographic group that TV, ads, and movies can still depict as clueless, useless dips***s, basically, just another child that mom has to look after,” Maher said on his show Real Time on Friday, June 20. “Every sitcom is, ‘Tonight on ABC, Larry burns down the house,’ and the tagline in the commercial for every household product is basically, ‘Because your husband is a moron.’” He went on: “You know, I’m not sure when this trend started, but...

Despite the fact that he has no children of his own (if you don’t count the children he drunkenly lectured on his podcast), Bill Maher sure has a lot to say about fatherhood.
Last June, Maher used Father’s Day as a springboard to complain that overly sensitive dads are the cause of America’s teen mental health epidemic — and not, you know, a global pandemic and increased economic insecurity. Although he did draw the line at suggesting that the “trad dads” he longs for should resume giving kids the belt.
Similarly, on the most recent episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, the host’s “New Rules” segment ended with a prolonged rant about the cultural emasculation of the modern father, who Maher argued are the “last demographic group that TV, ads and movies can still depict as clueless, useless dipshits.”

Exclusive: After years of playing polite, California’s governor and senior senator are now taking on Donald Trump with bare knuckled blows in his favorite forum, looking to do damage to Potus and his Maga agenda — as Jd Vance’s trip to the Golden State on Friday made very clear.
“Things really changed for us on Sunday, June 8, when the president was prepping to deploy the military on American streets,” Gavin Newsom senior advisor Robert Salladay detailed to Deadline on what provoked the usually circumspect two-term Democrat to take to the digital barricades. “That broke the dam — what he was doing was so outrageous, so deranged, it needed a sustained, creative response.”

Television City is opening its soundstages to social media influencers amid a historic production slump in California that’s rippled across the entertainment industry.
Hackman Capital Partners announced on Tuesday a partnership with Interwoven Studios aimed at offering creators production services and studio amenities typically reserved for films and TV shows. Since opening, the facility has attracted projects with Logan Paul, Jake Shane and FaZe Clan.
The move comes amid a downturn in filming in Los Angeles driven by movies and TV shows increasingly filming in other states and countries. More than a year removed from the strikes, the entertainment industry hasn’t returned to filming in Los Angeles as initially expected. Shooting levels in the region, exacerbated by reductions in content spend across most studios, in 2024 recorded the lowest figure observed by FilmLA since it started tracking the data (excluding 2020, when filming was halted amid the pandemic). Bill Maher offered bold relationship advice to Elon Musk after the billionaire’s public feud with Donald Trump. On the June 13 episode of Real Time With Bill Maher, the late-night host, 69, addressed the falling-out between the Tesla CEO, 53, and Potus, 79. Maher specifically discussed Musk attempting to backtrack on some of the harsh things he wrote about Trump on X. “I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week. They went too far,” the father of 14 tweeted on June 11. During his “New Rules” segment, Maher begged Musk not to return to Trump like someone would after breaking up with a toxic ex. “I get it. You were hurt in your previous relationship with the left, so you threw yourself into a bad rebound,” he joked. “I see you’re thinking of crawling back.” That’s when Maher offered his unsolicited counsel to Musk. “Don’t do it,” he bluntly stated.

Emmy nomination voting started Thursday, but voters won't get to fill out as many names in some categories as in previous years. When nominations are announced July 15, there will be the fewest nominees in the lead acting categories since 2008. That was the last year all acting categories had five slots before the Television Academy expanded to six. In 2020, the TV Academy mixed things up again with a sliding scale. Excluding Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series, which are fixed at eight slots each, the number of slots per category will be determined by the number of submissions.
Since then, some of the lead categories across drama, comedy, and limited/TV movie have gotten six slots. Last year, drama and comedy leads had six, while limited leads had five. This year, however, barring a tie, all of the lead categories will have five slots for the first time ever under this system.

Bill Maher said all he could think about during the Real Time episode on Friday, June 6, was “the Trump/Elon thing” — i.e. the escalating feud between President Donald Trump and former Doge head Elon Musk. “When you think about it, the richest man in the world and the most powerful man in the world, it’s like Godzilla versus King Kong if Godzilla was on ketamine and King Kong had a combover,” Maher said on the HBO show Friday. “I mean, these guys were so close. It was like Brangelina or Bennifer. No, you know that. Elon and Trump — they had their own couple name: Elump.” Maher recapped the drama so far. After stepping back from his post leading the Department of Government Efficiency, Musk criticized Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, calling it a “massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill” and a “disgusting abomination.” Trump then said...

You might assume that the President of the United States publicly, and messily, beefing with the world’s richest man would be a real layup for late-night talk show comedians. And you’d be right.
On Thursday night, hosts such as Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers and several Jimmys relentlessly dunked on the two former best bros. And even more impressively, the unpaid randos on social media were able to quickly fill the internet with hilarious jokes about the objectively hilarious situation.
But on tonight’s episode of Real Time, Bill Maher, who had more than 24 hours to come up with some killer material, somehow didn’t have a single funny joke about the famous feud. Obviously comedy is subjective, and, personally, I’m not a big fan of Maher’s, but some of these lines were shockingly bad.
Maher began his monologue by acknowledging the Maga breakup, before adding “even worse,...

Obviously comedy is subjective, and, personally, I’m not a big fan of Maher’s, but some of these lines were shockingly bad.
Maher began his monologue by acknowledging the Maga breakup, before adding “even worse,...

Bill Maher poked fun at President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s virtual back-and-forth during the latest episode of Real Time with a reference to the sprawling legal battle between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.
At the top of Friday’s episode of the HBO series, the comedian kicked things off by thanking his audience for “putting on a brave face because I know you’re all probably upset” because of “what happened with Elon and Donald Trump” this past week.
Maher later said that he wasn’t going to “pretend I can really think about anything other than the Trump, Elon” rift, comparing their conflict to the Godzilla vs. Kong movie franchise. “When you think about it, the richest man in the world and the most powerful man in the world, it’s like Godzilla versus King Kong, if Godzilla was on ketamine and King Kong had a comb over,...

In his New Rules segment on Real Time, Bill Maher decried some liberal strategists’ idea that the Democrats need to find their own version of Joe Rogan.
“Instead of conjuring up a new Joe Rogan, ask yourself why you lost the old one,” Maher challenged. “Because he used to be on your side.”
Ditto Elon Musk.
Maher called Musk “another guy who five years ago was thought of as a liberal who was driven into the other camp by bad attitudes and bad ideas — a reversal I completely understand although I would never emulate it.
The Real Time host continued, “I related to the kind of mean girl shit you get from the cool kids in Wokeville. They tried real hard to cancel Rogan.”
And when Musk hosted SNL in 2021 well before he was Trumper, Maher claimed some of the castmembers gave him the cold shoulder for the sin of being rich.

Somebody ought to tell Bill Maher and Rob Schneider that the real cancel culture is in Brazil. According to EuroWeekly, comedian Leo Lins has been sentenced to eight years in jail for inciting intolerance with his offensive jokes.
Earlier this week, Lins received his punishment for a comedy special that targeted — deep breath here — Black people, obese people, elderly people, people with HIV, homosexuals, evangelicals, Indigenous communities, people from the impoverished northeast of Brazil, Jews and people with disabilities. Lins wasn’t trying to simply win the game but was trying to fill the entire bingo card.
A federal court in São Paulo ruled that Lins’s right to freedom of expression was not absolute, and “cannot be used as an excuse to make hateful, prejudiced and discriminatory remarks.” His jokes had consequences, the court ruled, declaring that the comedian’s YouTube special helped fuel “the spread of verbal violence in society and promote intolerance.
