Although Lindsay Lohan says in an interview with Perri Nemiroff that director Nisha Ganatra said, "We're not doing Easter eggs," "Freakier Friday" has plenty of playful allusions to both the original movie and Lohan's career that will make any fan of hers and millennium pop culture smile. In Ethan Anderton's /Film review of "Freakier Friday," he praises director Nisha Ganatra and writer Jordan Weiss for using "callbacks and other returning characters sparingly and naturally." Anna rocks that iconic cherry-red guitar, Mr. Bates enjoys torturing his students, and we're still swooning over Chad Michael Murray's Jake. Over 20 years later, Anna isn't romantically involved with Jake anymore, which makes perfect sense, since most people don't end up marrying their high school sweetheart.
"Freakier Friday" doesn't bludgeon you over the head with nostalgia or try too hard to replicate the original, but it does give gentle winks to Lindsay Lohan's career in...

Right at the end of 2024, a bunch of "Girls5Eva" fans — myself very much included — got terrible news. According to Variety and other major outlets, the show — which moved from Peacock to Netflix after the conclusion of its second season and premiered its third on Reed Hastings' streamer — never made it into Netflix's top 10. That meant it just wasn't popular enough, so it got axed.
This is a crying shame because "Girls5Eva," created by "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" veteran Meredith Scardino, is just so unbelievably funny, and I personally rallied for its third season to earn a spot on /Film's list of the best TV shows of 2024. With Tina Fey and Robert Carlock on board as executive producers, it's no surprise that the jokes fly just as fast as they did on that duo's outstanding show "30 Rock," and the plot of this unfortunately canceled comedy is pretty irresistable to boot: Former...

Dawson's Creekstar James Van Der Beek reveals why his iconic character "looked like a pubescent Jesus."
Per Entertainment Weekly, the Dawson's Creek star recalled the story of getting his iconic '90s look before landing the role of Dawson Leery. Van Der Beek said that, at the time, he was desperately in need of a haircut when series' creator Kevin Williamson was able to snag an appointment with his own hairdresser. "And I meet his assistant [at the salon], and there was an Entertainment Weekly with a picture of Brad Pitt in TheDevil's Own, and we're like, 'Alright, give him that.' So that became the Dawson Season 1 haircut."
Released in 1997, The Devil's Own was an action thriller featuring Pitt in one of his more serious roles. Dawson's Creek fans may not have realized it was that role of Pitt's in particular that influenced Van Der Beek's look for the teen drama series.

Michelle Williams and Busy Philipps had a front row seat, literally, to the 2017 Oscars snafu.
The longtime best friends remembered the Best Picture mixup from the 89th Academy Awards, and Philipps’ kooky reaction on her show “Busy This Week” on QVC+ and Hsn+.
Moments before the final award of the night was announced, the duo attempted to sneak out and beat the rush. After they were ushered back to their front row seats (Williams was nominated for her performance in “Manchester by the Sea” that night), Oscar presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced that “La La Land” had won.
But something felt off.
“We were right there in the front row. We knew something weird was happening,” Philipps said on an episode of “Busy This Week.”

At a special screening of Another Simple Favor, Collider's Steve Weintraub sat down with filmmaker Paul Feig for a Q&a to talk about sequels, editing, and the challenges of working in Hollywood. Before the night was over, the conversation simply had to turn to one of Feig’s most beloved — and famously short-lived — projects: Freaks and Geeks. The cult classic high school dramedy aired for just one season between 1999 and 2000, yet it left an indelible mark on television history, launching a genuinely stunning wave of future stars — seriously, the cast included Linda Cardellini, John Francis Daley, James Franco, Martin Starr, Jason Segel, Busy Philipps, Samm Levine and Seth Rogen to name just a few — and gaining a second life through streaming, DVD box sets, and endless critical praise. But for all the fans' hopes of a revival, Feig made it clear: the show’s ending is exactly how he always wanted it.

From 2007 to 2014 and across 138 episodes, writer, director, producer, and actor John Francis Daley played Dr. Lance Sweets on "Bones," Hart Hanson's beloved procedural series about forensic anthropologists solving cold cases. Did you know, though, that Daley also wrote one of those episodes?
The season 6 episode "The Truth in the Myth" — which was written by Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, directed by Chad Lowe, and came out in 2011 — focuses on a case involving a man who worked as a "mythbuster" named Lee Coleman (Leigh McCloskey) who, it's believed, died in some sort of incident with the mythical Chupacabra. After Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and her team keep investigating, they find all sorts of different animal traces on the corpse, including bite marks, scales from reptiles, and hair from mammals, though the pragmatic Bones remains convinced that it's all some sort of hoax.

Joshua Jackson didn't have a great experience when auditioning for Dawson's Creek. In fact, he's compared it to The Hunger Games - the franchise where teenagers have to fight to the death in an arena.
While talking to Jesse Tyler Ferguson (who himself auditioned for the role of Dawson) on his Dinner's On Me podcast, Jackson remembered what a draining experience it all was. "I think I had like nine auditions for - I think first for Pacey, then for Dawson, then back to Pacey," he said, via Entertainment Weekly. "And then when I made it to the final, final, final thing, they take you to the Warner Bros. ranch."
"In that room are 35 potential kids who are now, like, put into this Hunger Games moment," Jackson said. Luckily, there were no weapons present - just a lot of actors who were dying for their big break. "And you spend...

In a sign of the times for cable TV, the legacy home shopping brand QVC Group says that it is laying off approximately 900 staffers and consolidating operations as it pivots to focus on the opportunity presented by “live social shopping.”
QVC Group is the parent company of both QVC and Hsn (formerly Home Shopping Network), and is controlled by the cable and media mogul John Malone.
“Linear TV is a highly engaging, highly profitable platform and it remains our cornerstone. However, as traditional TV declines and a mix of video platforms takes a greater share of customer attention, we must hurry our expansion beyond TV to find growth,” the company wrote in its annual report to shareholders Friday. “We are fundamentally redefining who we are as a company and the role we play for our customers and in retail. We enter this next phase of our turnaround with rigor and excitement.

Alright, let’s get this out of the way: Dawson’s Creek was the guilty pleasure of the late ‘90s and early 2000s. It was the TV equivalent of a high school breakup that you never really got over. The angsty love triangles, the tragic back-and-forth between Dawson and Joey, and of course, Pacey – who was just too cool for the entire show.
We were hooked, we were obsessed, and we just knew we’d be watching those familiar faces for years. But like all good things, Dawson’s Creek didn’t last forever. After six seasons, the show wrapped up in 2003, leaving fans asking, “Why, oh why, did you have to pull the plug so soon?”

Don’t worry; we’re not here to leave you hanging, not like some of the show’s love triangles. So, let’s not waste any more...

Sometimes it can take years for a movie to truly catch on, and that has proven to be the case with the 2004 comedy White Chicks, directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, and starring Marlon and Shawn Wayans, better known as the Wayans Brothers. The film was a moderate hit upon release and wasn't embraced by critics as it carries a less than stellar 15% Rotten Tomatoes score. Despite the critical response, the film has since been regarded as a cult classic, with many fans demanding a sequel. As they wait for news of a follow-up, White Chicks has found success once again by becoming a hit on streaming.
White Chicks is currently streaming on Max and is currently ranked ninth in their top ten movies. The movie is ahead of the James Franco comedy Why Him and behind a wide range of efforts from films that are great, such as End of Watch...

Netflix makes decisions on which shows to renew or cancel based on performance vs. cost. The streamer’s latest data dump gives a glimpse into the numbers behind some of its highest-profile cancellations.
The company launched its latest What We Watched report, which gives viewership numbers for shows between July and December 2024.
Kaos, the Greek mythology comedy starring Jeff Goldblum, was Netflix’s most-watched canceled series in the second half of last year.
The series scored 20.3M views in that six-month period. Kaos, which comes from The End of the F*cking World creator Charlie Covell, started off relatively strong with 3.4M views in its first couple of days before adding 5.9M views in its first full week on the service between September 2 and 8.

Women of a certain age are like a good bottle of wine—they just get better with time. This is almost the perfect way to describe Girls5eva—a show that proves women in their 40s still have plenty of rhythm, sass, and heart to make the music industry take notice, even after their big hits have faded into the annals of pop culture history. Created by Meredith Scardino and executive produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, Girls5eva is an amazing ride through nostalgia, irreverence, and hilarity, all wrapped up in infectious pop anthems.

We’ve watched the hilarious and endearing quartet of former girl group members—Dawn, Wickie, Summer, and Gloria—reignite their dreams of stardom while battling personal struggles, fractured friendships, and the weight of a past that refuses to let them go. But, as with any musical comeback, not all seasons are created equal.

One of the most controversial comedies of modern times is getting a long-awaited sequel. Released more than two decades ago, White Chicks stars Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans as two FBI agents who must go undercover as two white, female socialites...using “whiteface.” Now, finally, the cinematic gods have heard our endless cries as Marlon Wayans confirms that there are plans in place to bring back Brittany and Tiffany Wilson for White Chicks 2.
Speaking with Good Morning America, Wayans revealed that, following the release of another of the Wayans’ highly anticipated comedy sequels, Scary Movie 6, they will start work on White Chicks 2, with the actor, comedian, writer, and producer saying, “it’s time.”
"[Fans always ask] 'When are you doing the sequel?' They love that movie," he said. "Hey, you know, I think it's time. Let's get Scary Movie 6 done, and then we'll go and bring out White Chicks 2."
