William Stanford Davis On His “100% Honest” Approach To ‘Abbott Elementary’s Hilarious School Custodian Mr. Johnson
Image
William Stanford Davis wants his Abbott Elementary character Mr. Johnson to feel familiar.

Maybe not all of us had a conspiracy-prone school custodian who may offer some surprisingly sage advice in one breath and try to scam you out of $20 in the next. But, we do all know a person who doesn’t quite fit any of the molds society has created for us. That eccentric person who seems to have lived a thousand lives before they came into ours. That, Davis says, is who he hopes Mr. Johnson evokes in between his hilarious one-liners.

“I try to make him an honest, 100% human being. He just has a few quirky ways,” the actor told Deadline during a sit-down conversation at San Diego Comic-Con.

Davis was joined at the convention by much of his fellow Abbott Elementary cast and crew, including creator and star Quinta Brunson as well as Tyler James Williams,...

‘Abbott Elementary’ Star Quinta Brunson on Janine’s Surprising Swearing in the ‘Always Sunny’ Crossover and Season 5’s Philly Sports Cameo
Image
If there’s one thing that’s true about “Abbott Elementary,” it’s that the hit ABC comedy wears its Philly colors loud and proud, particularly in terms of featuring the city’s local sports teams.

So far, “Abbott” has featured cameos from Eagles stars Jalen Hurts, Jason Kelce and Brandon Graham in the Season 3 premiere (plus the NFL team later brought the Super Bowl trophy to set), as well as a funny Season 2 storyline with the Philadelphia Flyers’ mascot Gritty. And, at San Diego Comic-Con, series creator and star Quinta Brunson teased that there are more surprises to come.

“You can expect us to be filming at a live event,” Brunson told the crowd, somewhat cryptically. “You can do with that information what you will, because I can’t give you more information. But I do think that Philly sports fans will be very happy.”

In general, “Abbott” fans...

Following Rumors of Quinta Brunson’s Exit, ’Abbott Elementary’s Future Gets Major Update From Disney Executive
Image
There's such a thing as a show overstaying its welcome, regardless of how successful or well-loved it is. This is a fact not lost on Abbot Elementary star and creator, Quinta Brunson, who recently hinted at the show's end, sharing that she has begun looking out for the next exciting thing in her career. Emmy On-Screen Diversity Takes A Hit With Acting & Hosting Nominations Down 18% From 2024
Image
Twenty-eight actors and reality hosts from diverse backgrounds were recognized by the Television Academy with Emmy nominations on Tuesday, not only an 18% drop from last year’s 34 but a near-low since 2019, when there were 26 non-Caucasian actors and hosts.

At its highest, the most diverse year for actors and reality competition/talk show hosts was 2021 per Deadline stats with a massive 49 nominees.

While there were only two categories last year devoid of nominees from diverse backgrounds, this year there were three.

Emmys Diversity Report 2025: LGBTQ and Black Performers Thrive, but Overall Poc Representation Is Down
Image
First, the good news about this year’s Emmy nominees: Queer, Black, Asian and Latino performers made history. The less good news: Overall representation is down for people of color, especially for folks of Asian and indigenous descent.

Of the 92 total performers nominated in the acting categories, 24 of them are people of color, a dip from 2024, when Asian, Latino and Black actors made significant strides, with 30 nominees.

This year, members of the LGBTQ community did well across all categories. Bella Ramsey picked up their second Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for HBO’s “The Last of Us,” becoming the only nonbinary performer to be twice nominated for acting Emmys. This bit of history builds on Ramsey’s own milestone from 2023, when they became the first openly nonbinary actor to be nominated in a lead acting category.

Queer actors were particularly well represented in the supporting actor in a comedy series category,...

Emmy Noms Analysis: Reading Between the Lines of Tuesday’s Announcement
Image
On one level, the biggest surprise about Tuesday morning’s Emmy nominations was how unsurprising they were — indeed, my final pre-noms forecast correctly projected, of the eventual nominees for best series, seven of eight dramas, eight of eight comedies and five of five limited/anthology series. But when you put them under a microscope, I think they tell an interesting story about today’s TV landscape.

HBO/HBO Max collected a platforms-leading and company-best 142 noms. Meanwhile, the biggest hauls for individual shows all traced back to Apple TV+ (which had its best year yet with 81 overall noms) and HBO/HBO Max, with the leaderboard topped by Apple’s sophomore drama Severance (27, up from 14 for its prior season), HBO’s limited series The Penguin (24), Apple’s rookie comedy The Studio (23, matching the comedy series record set last year by FX’s The Bear), the third installment of HBO’s drama franchise...

Emmy Awards 2025 Nominees: ‘Severance’ Leads with 27 Nominations
Image
Adam Scott stars in ‘Severance’ season 2 (Photo Credit: Apple TV+)

The 77th Emmy Awards nominees are a mixture of familiar and new, with Severance‘s second season topping the list with 27 nominations. Newbie The Studio scored 23 nominations, tying The Bear for the most Emmy nominations for a comedy series in a single year.

The Penguin received 24 nominations, and The White Lotus picked up 23. The Last Of Us earned 16 nominations, followed by Andor and Hacks with 14 each. Adolescence, The Bear, and The Pitt each received 13.

“In a year when the industry has continued to evolve—creatively, structurally, and economically—one thing remains clear: powerful performances and compelling stories still cut through. Emmy voters took notice this year as more members voted in the competition than ever before,” stated Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. “It’s a reminder of the impact incredible television and exceptional artists have on all of us. ‘Hacks’ receives 14 Emmy nominations — but has 3 surprising snubs
Image
Emmy voters gave Hacks a standing ovation on Tuesday, rewarding the show with 14 nominations including Best Comedy Series, which it won last year. (The only comedy with more bids is The Studio with a whopping 23.) However, Season 4 of HBO Max's acclaimed series didn't get everything for which it submitted, and there were three notable snubs that caught fans off-guard: supporting actors Paul W. Downs and Megan Stalter, and guest actor Christopher McDonald.

Here are the categories Hacks got into — and missed.

Best Comedy Series: Nominated

The fourth season of Hacks focused on Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) becoming the respective host and head writer of a broadcast network talk show, fulfilling Deborah's lifelong dream. It was predictably nominated in Best Comedy Series alongside Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking, The Studio, and What We Do in the Shadows.

Emmys 2025 Diversity Report: Worst Showing for Actors of Color in 5 Years Despite Historic Nominations
Image
The 2025 Emmy nominations delivered meaningful gains in representation across race, gender and identity, with a few concerning declines.

A total of 94 actors were recognized in the main acting categories — lead, supporting and guest. Of those 24 are Poc, a decline from the past five years. In 2024, 30 were performers of color, making up 31% of the nominees, which was an increase from 2023 and 2021, though it fell short of the 2022 peak, when 42 of 108 nominees (39%) were people of color, the most in Emmys history. Look at the last decade of numbers to see how this year compares:

“Abbott Elementary” creator, executive producer and star Quinta Brunson continues her historic Emmy run for hit ABC mockumentary. After becoming the first solo Black woman to win for comedy writing in 2022, and the second Black woman to win lead comedy actress in 2023, she now ties Stefani Robinson (“Atlanta” and “What We Do in the Shadows”) for the most...

‘Only Murders in the Building’ has 7 nominations — and 2 big snubs
Image
More like Only Some Emmys in the Building. The fourth season of Hulu's hit comedy came in well below Season 3's record 21 nominations with seven nominations, including Best Comedy Series and an acting nod for Martin Short, but not his two partners in crimesolving, Selena Gomez and Steve Martin.

Here's a rundown on all of the show's nominations — as well as the categories where it got stuck in Emmy jail.

Best Comedy Series: Nominated

Only Murders four-peated for Best Comedy Series after — appropriately enough — ranking fourth in the odds heading into Emmy morning. It was joined by the largely expected crop of nominees, including Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Nobody Wants This, Shrinking, The Studio, and What We Do in the Shadows.

Best Comedy Actress: Snubbed

After finally breaking into the Best Comedy Actress category in Season 3, Selena Gomez missed out on a repeat appearance in the ultra-competitive category.

Here’s how ‘The Studio’ scored a record 23 Emmy nominations
Image
If The Studio were an actual Hollywood studio, it outperformed some real studios this morning. The critically acclaimed Apple TV+ satire earned an impressive 23 Emmy nominations, the most of any comedy series this season. The previous record for a comedy series in its first year is 20 nominations, which was set by Ted Lasso in 2021.

Best Comedy Series: Nominated

As predicted by Gold Derby, the series was nominated for Best Comedy Series, where it has long been a front-runner. It will compete for the title alongside Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking, and What We Do in the Shadows.

Best Comedy Actor: Nominated

Multihyphenate Seth Rogen earned his first lead actor in a comedy nomination; he was previously nominated for supporting actor for Hulu's Pam & Tommy. He was also nominated for writing and directing for his work on The Studio. This...

‘The Bear’ serves up 13 Emmy nominations and 1 surprising snub
Image
There may be some Emmys on the menu once again for The Bear. The FX comedy series closed out nomination morning with 13 nods, including Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actor for Jeremy Allen White.

Nominated this time around for 2024's Season 3, The Bear is following up a strong second season, for which it earned 23 nominations, winning 11 total at last September's ceremony. Despite the impressive showing, the series was ultimately upset by HBO Max's Hacks, which claimed the top prize for Best Comedy Series after The Bear had won the year before.

The morning wasn't without its misses, however, as The Bear failed to secure a nomination for Best Comedy Writing after previously winning the category.

Emmy Nominations List: ‘Severance’ Leads the Pack With 27 Nods
Image
“Severance” is the clear frontrunner for the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards. The Apple TV+ dystopian thriller from Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller scored 27 nominations, the most of any one program, on Tuesday morning.

Altogether, there were four shows that scored more than 20 nominations. HBO’s “The Penguin” was the second most-nominated series of the year with 24 nods. That was followed by Apple TV+’s “The Studio” and HBO’s “The White Lotus,” both of which secured 23 nominations.

Harvey Guillén and Brenda Song announced the nominees for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. Earlier on Tuesday, “CBS Mornings” revealed the nominees for reality competition series and talk series, which largely went as predicted.

The 77th Primetime Awards will take place live at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14, 2025. The show will air on CBS and Paramount+ and will be hosted by Nate Bargatze.

Emmy Nominations 2025: ‘Severance’ Leads All Shows With 27 Nods, ‘The Penguin,’ ‘The Studio’ and ‘White Lotus’ Close Behind
Image
Emmy voters sure know how to take a bite of the Apple. As the Television Academy unveiled nominations for the 77th Emmy Awards on Tuesday, Apple TV+’s hits “Severance” and “The Studio” led the tallies for both drama and comedy series, respectively.

HBO Max, meanwhile, led the overall network tally at 142 — thanks to shows including “The Penguin” (the most in limited/anthology), “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us” and “Hacks.” That’s up from the outlet’s previous best, 140 in 2022.

But “Severance,” which scored 27 noms, and “The Studio,” which landed 23 noms, were undeniable. In particular, “The Studio” has now earned the most comedy nominations in a single year, ever — tying Season 3 of “The Bear,” which earned 23 nods in 2024.

HBO Max’s massive tally puts it back on top, a place where it has spent the majority of the last two decades. In more recent years, it has battled...

Aghast ‘Abbott Elementary’ Fans React to Quinta Brunson’s C-Word Shocker in ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: ‘The Gasp I Gasped’
Image
As a second-grade teacher, Abbott Elementary’s Janine Teagues is no stranger to four-letter words. But instead of “read,” “play” or “quiz,” The Gang from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia drove her to add a brand new term to her vocabulary: cunt.

During the second installment of the Abbott Elementary/Always Sunny crossover on Wednesday night, fans were shocked to hear the typically wholesome teacher played by Quinta Brunson resort to dropping the c-bomb while describing her newly-minted archnemesis, Dee Reynolds.

“It wasn’t until I saw the extra footage that I was able to realize just how much of a — I need to say a bad word,” she explained, getting the go-ahead from her on-screen beau and co-worker, Gregory Eddie. “How much of a total fucking cunt she was.”

Sparking immediate confusion from her partner — “I thought you was gonna call her a bitch,” he replied in visible awe...

It's almost time for the next Abbott Elementary/It's Always Sunny crossover! (How to watch)
Image
The second Abbott Elementary and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover episode is almost here! It was so fun and iconic to see the gang volunteering at the school in the ABC comedy's season 4 episode 9, "Volunteers." Now, it's time for the much more mature sitcom to show their side of events, and I'm sure things are about to get raunchy. So how and when can you tune in?

The next Abbott Elementary and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover episode premieres Wednesday, July 9, 2025 starting at 9 p.m. Et on Fxx. The installment serves as the season 17 premiere of the comedy.

The network is available on basic cable packages, as well as YouTube TV, Fubo, and Hulu + Live TV. So there's many options to watch it live. Here's a breakdown of the release times based on time zone:

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star almost quit the show fearing it had ‘peaked’
Image
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been running 17 seasons strong when the new installment premieres very soon Wednesday, July 9, 2025 on FX! Since 2005, the raunchy and unruly gang has been making us laugh, and it seems like there's no stopping them even after all this time. However a few years back, one of the stars almost quit, believing the show had reached its peak.

I can't believe that on Aug. 4, Sunny will have reached its 20-year milestone. It's definitely no easy feat for any show. It's become the longest-running live-action American comedy of all time, which is amazing! Even so, 17 seasons and 20 years is a lot. During the series' two-decade celebrations at a panel, the cast, including Glenn Howerton were there. And that's when he expressed his worry about the series during seasons 12 and 13. Here's what he had to say, per Entertainment Weekly:

"I was worried that maybe, we had sort of peaked or something,...

Quinta Brunson Signals That ‘Abbott Elementary’ May End Soon: ‘Our Show Is Very Time-Consuming’
Image
Series creator and star Quinta Brunson indicated that “Abbott Elementary” may soon come to a close, just days ahead of the cast’s highly anticipated appearance on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” (airing July 9). “Abbott Elementary” is set to begin its fifth season in the fall, and its first four outings have not only been a ratings hit for ABC but raked in scores of award nominations, a rarity for any network series in 2025.

“We are so fortunate and blessed to be on a network TV show for five seasons, and for people to still be fans,” the Emmy-winning actress and writer told Bustle. “That being said, I have cast members who would love to pursue other projects, and our show is very time-consuming. We shoot about seven months out of the year. That can stop people from being able to do a lot of other things.”

The other cast...

Despite Its Success, This ‘Abbott Elementary’ Star, 35, Is “Looking Forward to Moving Away” for Other Projects
Image
Abbott Elementary has been one of the most successful network sitcoms of recent years. The show's creator and star, however, is already looking forward to graduation. In a recent interview with Bustle, Quinta Brunson talked about the show's inevitable conclusion and her interest in moving on to new projects. It won't happen any time soon, though: Abbott Elementary has been renewed for a fifth season, which will premiere in the fall.

Brunson is effusive about the show's success with critics and audiences, which has kept the show on the air for five years: "We are so fortunate and blessed to be on a network TV show for five seasons, and for people to still be fans." However, she's looking for projects that will let her escape her Abbott character, perky second-grade teacher Janine Teagues: "I’m always interested in playing against type. I think that’s any actor’s dream.

Quinta Brunson ‘Looking Forward’ to Moving on From ‘Abbott Elementary’ Role and Acting ‘Against Type’: ‘I Have Cast Members Who Would Love to Pursue Other Projects’
Image
“Abbott Elementary” star, showrunner and creator Quinta Brunson is looking forward to her next big project.

During a recent interview with Bustle, the Emmy-winner explained that she is “looking forward to moving away” from her role as elementary school teacher Janine Teagues. She added that she knows several cast members who would also “love” to expand to other roles.

“We are so fortunate and blessed to be on a network TV show for five seasons, and for people to still be fans,” Brunson explained. “That being said, I have cast members who would love to pursue other projects, and our show is very time-consuming. We shoot about seven months out of the year. That can stop people from being able to do a lot of other things.”

Brunson said that she is currently parsing through scripts to see what might come next, but is still waiting for the perfect TV...

Quinta Brunson Is “Looking Forward” To Roles Beyond ‘Abbott Elementary’
Image
With Abbott Elementary going back to school for a fifth season, creator, showrunner and star Quinta Brunson has graduation on her mind.

The Golden Globe winner recently admitted she’s “looking forward to moving away” from roles like that of second-grade teacher Janine Teagues as she also considers how “very time-consuming” the series is for her cast to continue committing.

“We are so fortunate and blessed to be on a network TV show for five seasons, and for people to still be fans,” she told Bustle. “That being said, I have cast members who would love to pursue other projects, and our show is very time-consuming. We shoot about seven months out of the year. That can stop people from being able to do a lot of other things.”

The 3x Emmy-winning series also stars Tyler James Williams, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, Janelle James, Chris Perfetti and William Stanford Davis.

Quinta Brunson Addresses Whether ‘Abbott Elementary’ Could End With Season 5
Image
Even great things have to end at some point. Such is the circle of life, and fans of Abbott Elementarymight feel that sting soon. The sitcom returns for Season 5 this fall, and series creator and star, Quinta Brunson, is already mauling over when the show could come to a close. The show premiered in 2021 and follows a group of the titular Philadelphia public school teachers as they engage with their students, trying to help them succeed. Season 4 saw Willard R. Abbott Elementary School bid farewell to some of its favorite students, which suggests the upcoming season will be coming with a freshness to it. So, when might we say goodbye to knowledge acquisition?

Abbott Elementary has been incredibly successful throughout its run so far, winning four Emmys along the way. Central to the series' theme is Brunson's character, Janine Teagues, who seeks to make an impact on the lives of her students.
