Loni Anderson Dies at 79 After Prolonged Illness
Image
Loni Anderson, the TV star best known for playing Jennifer Marlowe on the sitcom Wkrp in Cincinnati, has died at the age of 79. Her publicist, Cheryl J. Kagan, said she passed away in Los Angeles on August 3 after a long illness. She was just two days away from turning 80. Anderson was with her closest family members when she died.

Her family broke the news in a public statement. “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our dear wife, mother and grandmother,” they said. They decided not to share any more about her health problems.

Fans are remembering how much Anderson cared about health causes, especially her work to spread awareness about Copd, a serious lung disease. She often spoke about it and worked to help people dealing with it. She also spent years caring for her parents, who were both very ill.

Born in Minnesota, Anderson dreamed of acting from a young age.

Loni Anderson, Iconic Star of Wkrp in Cincinnati, Dies at 79
Loni Anderson
Loni Anderson, who rose to fame playing Jennifer Marlowe, the glamorous and quick-witted receptionist on the hit sitcom Wkrp in Cincinnati, has passed away at the age of 79. According to the Associated Press, Anderson died following a long illness. Further details have not yet been made public.

For those who might be too young to remember, Wkrp in Cincinnati was widely regarded as one of the sharpest and funniest comedies of its era. Set at a struggling FM radio station in Cincinnati, the show followed a ragtag group of staffers, including bumbling station manager Arthur Carlson (Gordon Jump), straight-laced Gm Andy Travis (Gary Sandy), DJs Dr. Johnny Fever (Howard Hesseman) and Venus Flytrap (Tim Reid), smarmy ad salesman Herb Tarlek (Frank Bonner), anxious newsman Les Nessman (Richard Sanders), and reporter Bailey Quarters (Jan Smithers).

Among them, Anderson probably had the quickest rise to fame. Her portrayal of Jennifer—a blonde...

Loni Anderson, ‘Wkrp in Cincinnati’ Star, Dies at 79
Image
Loni Anderson, who played the savvy, high-heeled receptionist Jennifer Marlowe on “Wkrp in Cincinnati,” died on Sunday, according to AP. She was 79.

Anderson died at a hospital in Los Angeles after a battle with a “prolonged” illness, according to her publicist, Cheryl J. Kagan.

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our dear wife, mother and grandmother,” Anderson’s family told AP in a statement.

Airing four seasons from 1978 to 1982, “Wkrp in Cincinnati” followed a has-been Ohio radio station attempting a desperate image change by swapping their typical fare of low-impact jams to chart-topping rock and roll. Anderson starred as Jennifer Marlowe, Wkrp’s empowered, quick-witted receptionist. Known for using her womanly charms to dismiss her boss, Mr. Carlson, she often served as a reliable anchor for the station, getting things done despite her incompetent co-workers. She earned two Emmy nods and three Golden Globe nominations for the role.

The B-Side Ep. 167 – John Frankenheimer (with Blake Howard)
Image
Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.

Today we discuss John Frankenheimer, a true expert of the craft and a man who could make any kind of film. Our B-Sides today include Prophecy, 52 Pick-Up, Dead Bang, and the HBO Film Against the Wall (for which Frankenheimer won an Emmy!)

Our guest today is the great Blake Howard of One Heat Minute Productions. He’s just wrapping up his podcast series Romin, in which Blake discusses Frankenheimer’s late-period action masterpiece (and certified A-Side) Ronin with incredible film minds (and also two schlubs from The Film Stage). In this episode, I tell a fairly interesting first-hand story about original Ronin screenwriter J.D. Zeik!

The superb interview book John Frankenheimer: A Conversation With Charles Champlin is referenced quite a bit throughout,...

Ahead of ‘It: Welcome to Derry's Debut, This 1990 Stephen King Adaptation Starring Tim Curry Is a Streaming Hit Globally
Image
The past few years have seen several iconic Stephen King books adapted for both small and large screens, with most leaving fans yearning for more. This year alone, the likes of The Monkey from writer-director Oz Perkins and Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck have already hit theaters, but that’s not all, as there’s more scheduled to drop in the coming months. One such upcoming adaptation is the HBO Max series It: Welcome to Derry, based on King’s 1986 novel, which has no specific release date yet but is expected later this year.

While fans await a date, an older version also inspired by the same book is currently trending on the global streaming charts, as reported by FlixPatrol. That version is the 1990 It miniseries, starring Tim Curry as the infamous Pennywise, which has climbed its way to #5 on HBO Max’s Top 10 TV shows as of Thursday,...

The Darkest Stephen King Series Ever Made Is Quietly Climbing the Global Streaming Charts 35 Years Later
Image
The original It television miniseries is taking over the global streaming charts ahead of the release of It: Welcome to Derry.

Per FlixPatrol, 1990's It has reached the number five spot on the top streaming series chart for HBO Max for July 9. The classic horror miniseries has blown past other hit shows such as the recently released Duster or Bahar, while quickly gaining momentum from stiffer competition, including The Gilded Age and Rick and Morty, the latter two of which currently hold the number three and number one spots respectively.

Released on ABC back on November 18 and 20 of 1990, the two-part It television miniseries was based on original author Stephen King's iconic 1986 novel of the same name. The series starred Richard Thomas, Annette O'Toole, Harry Anderson, Dennis Christopher, Tim Reid, Richard Masur, and John Ritter as the adult members of the film's Losers Club, who take it upon themselves to...

10 Best Stephen King Movies With the Worst Endings
Image
When it comes to modern horror, few creators compare to Stephen King. As one of the most frequently-adapted authors in history, his popular stories have been transformed into some of the most successful genre films out there. However, they can't all be masterpieces, and many of them don't live up to their strong starts. This list contains ten of the best Stephen King films that just couldn't stick the landing.

Each of these famous adaptations, sequels, prequels, and remakes has something to offer, but their conclusions hold them back from greatness. Sometimes it's the filmmaker's mistake, some endings have just aged poorly, and sometimes fans must accept that even Stephen King is fallible. This list of flawed but fascinating films helps illuminate what makes a great story, and how easy it is to fall short of perfection — even for the master.

Stephen King’s It (1990) – The Test of Time
Image
While the cinematic and televised realms of Stephen King are both old hat and as constant and unchanging as death and taxes now, it wasn’t always this way. Sure, he had movies hitting the theater pretty consistently all through the late 70s through, well, still today, but TV was a different story altogether. Salem’s Lot came out in 1979, and it was a big hit in both viewership numbers and critical appraisal but that was it for a while. We would even get that strange and wonderful Larry Cohen sequel to Salem’s Lot before we would get another King TV series. Once It hit screens over a weekend though, the flood gates would be opened with The Tommyknockers, The Stand, The Langoliers, and many other including actual TV shows. It would remain incredibly popular and fond in our memories but is It any good 35 years later or is It just...

Stephen King's Terrifying 'It' Miniseries Sets Max Streaming Date
Image
If you're looking for a little nostalgic horror to go with your black-eyed peas on New Year's Day, Max has you covered. The streaming service will add the original miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's It to its roster on Jan. 1. Originally produced for ABC, the two-part terror-fest scarred an entire generation of children when it first aired in 1990, generating coulrophobia (a fear of clowns) in everyone who tuned in, due to Tim Curry's absolutely horrifying version of Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

Based on King's 1984 novel of the same name, the miniseries, helmed by John Carpenter protégé Tommy Lee Wallace, differs significantly from the pair of theatrical films directed by Andy Muschietti, which came out in 2017 and 2019 respectively. For one, it retains the novel's 1950s setting for the children's segment, as opposed to the late 1980s seen in the Muschietti films.

This setting better reinforces the dichotomy of good...

It Will Be a Frustrating New Year's Day for Stephen King Fans
Image
Stephen King fans have many exciting adaptations to look forward to in the future, but not all previous movies and shows based on the horror author's works are available. Fans of one of King's most famous works, It, will get a treat on New Year's Day, but it will also come with a twist.

After It: Chapter Two left Netflix earlier this month, Max will add the original 1990 two-part miniseries It starring Tim Curry as Pennywise, and the final battle of the Losers' Club, It: Chapter Two. However, the frustrating part is that the 2017 film, It, will not be a part of the new additions. The film, with Andy Muschietti at the helm, starred Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, and it followed the children's first interaction with the Clown, a story that later continues with the adults in It: Chapter Two.

This Thanksgiving Sitcom Episode Is Great and You've Probably Never Seen It

Quick Links 'Wkrp's Great Thanksgiving Episode The Thanksgiving Marketing Stunt for the Ages

Name any popular sitcom, and theres a high probability that that series features at least one episode dedicated to Turkey Day. In 2014, ABCs Modern Family had an episode during its sixth season titled Three Turkeys. A year previous, FXs It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia honored the TV tradition with an entry during its ninth season titled The Gang Squashes Their Beef (having Thanksgiving dinner with your foes never played out so funny). If we really wanted to, we could go all the way back to 1967. There lies a special episode of Bewitched titled Samantha's Thanksgiving To Remember, in which Samantha and her relatives are whisked away to 1620, where they spend the holiday with actual pilgrims from that time. These shows (and their small Thanksgiving counterparts) will be in some sort of syndication for years, so dont worry about missing out.

‘Stream’ Review: A Hotel Gets Hellish in Familiar but Lively Gore-Horror Opus From ‘Terrifier’ Producers
Image
Those who think the days of the truly independent sleeper are long gone should take note of the “Terrifier” films which, with their direct, rather insular appeal to hardcore horror devotees, have racked up a very tidy sum in profits from relatively tiny budgetary layouts. A third feature will be released this fall, but meanwhile there’s “Stream,” a stand-alone effort from much of the crew of “Terrifier 2”, which capitalized on the original’s cult status to gross nearly $16 million two years ago. “Stream,” too, is launching as a limited theatrical event, booked between Aug. 21 to Aug. 25 in the U.S. and Canada, with other territories to follow.

Though it breaks from their conceptual template — there’s no killer clown — “Stream” also echoes the “Terrifier” films in its general gist, as well as individual plusses and minuses. They’re all movies on the higher-quality end of that peculiar gorehound terrain,...

‘The Bear’ is the latest in a long line of workplace comedy series
Image
FX’s “The Bear” has been the series equivalent of a three-star Michelin, James Beard Award-winning restaurant since its premiere in 2022. Created by writer/director/product Christopher Storer, the hit show revolves around Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), a chef from the fine dining world in New York, who returns to his home in Chicago to run the family’s sandwich shop after the suicide of his brother. The first season won 10 Emmys including best comedy series and actor in a comedy series for White. Besides earning a Peabody, “The Bear” also performed well at the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes. The second season is a strong Emmy contender and the third season which just dropped will probably follow suit in 2025.

Since the early days of TV, restaurants, nightclubs, coffee shops, bars and diners have played an important role in countless series including the beloved multi-Emmy Award-winning 1982-93 NBC sitcom “Cheers”. In fact,...

Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, and James Remar Join the "It" Prequel Cast
Image

Pennywise is breaking his 27-year curse and returning to Derry sooner than expected. Joining him are Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, and James Remar, who have all been added to the cast, Variety reported on April 5. Like many other details about the show, their specific roles are being kept under wraps.

HBO Max announced that an "It" prequel series titled "Welcome to Derry" was in the works on March 29, 2022, and officially gave it the green light on Feb. 23. The series, inspired by Stephen King's horror classic, will explore life in Derry leading up to Pennywise's tirade on the Losers Club before the razor-toothed killer clown's misdeeds led Georgie to his unfortunate fate in that rainy sewer drain.

However, there's a big caveat. On March 28, in an interview with Jake's Takes, Bill Skarsgård, who received critical acclaim for his role as Pennywise,...

That ‘90s Show Ignored That '70s Show’s Worst Twist
Image
The revelation of Hyde’s biological father was the worst twist in That '70s Show, which made That ‘90s Show’s decision to retcon the story a good choice. By the show’s final seasons, That ‘70s Show was running low on inspiration. Like many hang-out sitcoms before it, That ‘70s Show had become a victim of its success. When That ‘70s Show debuted, few could have guessed that the nostalgic comedy would still be on-air six years later. Unfortunately, it seemed as though the writers had not prepared for that eventuality either.

As a result, That ‘70s Show seasons 7 and 8 were a famously messy end to the series. Attempts to replace Topher Grace’s Eric led to the darkest That ‘70s Show storyline while, elsewhere, all manner of absurd twists vied for viewer attention. Jackie ended up with Fez, of all people, while Donna abandoned her series-defining relationship with...

That '70s Show Secretly Foreshadowed Its Silliest Twist
Image
While That ‘70s Show’s bizarre Hyde twist seemed to come out of nowhere, the revelation was subtly (and perhaps even accidentally) foreshadowed in the season 5 premiere. Like so many “hang-out” shows, That ‘70s Show fell victim to a classic problem when the sitcom reached its later seasons. That ‘70s Show started life as the story of a group of teens navigating high school in the titular decade but, by the show’s later seasons, the cast was mostly far too old to play teenage characters and their storylines had grown stagnant as the show’s premise required them to stay put in Point Place.

This led to frustrating storylines, like when That ‘70s Show missed Eric’s perfect exit and instead forced Topher Grace’s character to hang around for an extra season. This also led to increasingly wild twists as the creators of That ‘70s Show struggled to...

Tamera Mowry-Housley on Where She Hopes ‘Sister, Sister’ Twins Would Be Today
Tamera Mowry-Housley
It’s hard to believe that classic sitcom Sister, Sister was once on the chopping block. It could have easily fizzled out when the show got axed by ABC after two seasons in 1995. The comedy that launched the careers of Tia and Tamera Mowry started in the Tgif lineup before being shuffled along. A new network called The WB would save the series. Execs saw something in the story of twins separated at birth and reunited after 14 years alongside their adoptive parents Lisa Landry (Jackée Harry) and Ray Campbell (Tim Reid). Now Tamera Mowry-Housley, who these days is married with children of her own, remembers how daunting it felt as a teenager starring on the show. The comedy went on to have 119 episodes over the course of six seasons. Not to mention multiple Kids’ Choice and NAACP Image Awards. ©Paramount Television/Courtesy Everett Collection “I feel so honored and blessed to have had that opportunity,...

Tamera Mowry-Housley Reveals She’s Heard Some Questionable ‘Sister, Sister’ Reboot Pitches
Image
Tamera Mowry-Housley would love to give “Sister, Sister” fans the revival they’ve been calling for, but it has to be the right idea.

During an appearance on “The Jennifer Hudson Show”, the actress shared that she and her twin sister, Tia Mowry, have been approached with pitches to reprise their roles, but nothing has been right for them.

“Here’s the thing, Tia and I are both just booked, which is a great problem to have,” the actress began when asked whether something was in the works. “The other thing is, we have to make sure the idea is amazing because ‘Sister, Sister’ is iconic! I don’t want it to be lame.”

When Hudson stated that any revival with the sisters involved wouldn’t be lame, Tamera revealed that the duo has already heard some ideas and “it was not it — it wasn’t right.”

But there’s still hope!
