Hideo Kojima Gives His Verdict on James Gunn’s Superman: “The movie itself wasn’t punk”
Image
Hideo Kojima, the game designer behind Metal Gear and Death Stranding, has weighed in on James Gunn’s Superman, and it’s not what most fans of the movie would expect. He watched the Dcu reboot after returning from his world tour, and as per his post on X (formerly Twitter), Kojima believes that “the movie itself wasn’t punk.”

Superman stars David Corenswet as the titular hero, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. At large, the movie has been praised for its tonal shift from previous iterations of the DC character, but it didn’t sit right with some viewers— Kojima being one of them.

Death Stranding Creator Hideo Kojima Shares His Review of Superman: "It's A Heartwarming 'Human' Film"
Image
Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima is widely considered a visionary and frequently shares movie reviews on social media. They're typically either very detailed or simply an acknowledgement that he's seen something.

The latter is often considered an indication that he didn't like a new release, but Kojima had plenty to say about DC Studios and James Gunn's Superman.

"Since I’ve been on a world tour, I hadn’t had the chance to watch it, but this morning, I finally got to see James Gunn’s 'Superman.' It was good," he shared. "It was neither dark nor stylish, cool or even 'super.' The perspective of the audience—the distance and elevation—is different from the 'Superman' we used to Look Up (into the sky) to."

"This film gently observes the human being Clark Kent and Superman as one and approaches...

Britain, the 1980s. Thatcher. Black Monday. Riots. Strikes. Racism. In 1984, George Orwell’s 1984 became a bestseller again, slotting right into the nightmarish dystopia it had predicted. As unemployment figures soared, heroin addiction spread, as did HIV and AIDS. It was bloody miserable.

Then: 1988. Ecstasy, a drug promoting love and togetherness, arrived in the U.K., brought back from Ibiza — legend has it — by members of the Mancunian rock band New Order. The Second Summer of Love began. Two years later, Thatcher’s 15-year prime ministerial reign was over. Brit-pop happened.

“Punkrocker” has become a sensation on TikTok as it plays a big part in the final scene and end credits of the latest Superman film, which is currently in theaters. Iggy gave the song his live debut on Saturday (July 26th) at the Project Pabst festival in Portland, Oregon. It closed out a 20-song setlist that also saw the punk legend play solo favorites like “The Passenger” and “Lust for Life,” along with Stooges classics such as “I Wanna Be Your Dog” and “Search and Destroy.”

“Superman is the best friend you could have,” Iggy Pop recently said, responding to the prominent use of “Punkrocker,” his 2006 collaboration with Teddybears, in the final scene of Superman — and he proved he meant it Saturday night by playing the formerly obscure track live for the first time ever.

The song, which has exploded on streaming services and gone viral on TikTok since the movie‘s release, concluded Pop’s performance at Portland, Oregon’s Project Pabst Festival. Pop dedicated the performance to Superman, according to a crowd member who posted video.

James Gunn Says “Anti-American Sentiment” Impacting Superman’s Global Box Office Performance
Image
Superman is flying high at the domestic box office, where’s it’s up to $235 million after two weekends. Internationally, however, the movie is behind at $171 million, something writer/director James Gunn has chalked up to a combination of factors — including “anti-American sentiment.”

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Gunn pointed to the fact that despite his popularity, Superman still “is not a big known superhero in some places like Batman is.” However, he continued that “it also also affects things that we have a certain amount of anti-American sentiment around the world right now. It isn’t really helping us.”

Still, Superman’s global box office is growing, and is performing particularly well in places like Brazil and the UK. “So I think it’s just a matter of letting something grow. But again, for us, everything’s been a total win,” Gunn said Having the movie come out and be...

‘Superman’ Secrets Revealed: The James Gunn Spoiler Interview
Image
“I wanted a Superman who could be beaten,” Superman writer-director and DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn told Rolling Stone before the release of his film. David Corenswet’s Kal-El does take more than his share of punches in the film, but he turns it around in the end — and the movie itself is flying to its own triumphs at the box office. “Those weekday numbers have been incredible,” Gunn says.

Just after a press tour that took him around the world, Gunn joined Rolling Stone by Zoom for a follow-up...

What's The Song At The End Of James Gunn's Superman?
Image
"Superman" has a lot in common with James Gunn's other films. Yes, it's a comic book movie, which has sort of become his genre, but it's more than that. The tone, aesthetic, and narrative sensibilities all feel familiar if you're well-versed in his past work. And of course, one of the most obvious marks of a Gunn film at this point is the strategic use of a licensed soundtrack to underscore certain moments.

That stays true in "Superman," which plays "5 Years Time" by Noah and the Whale as Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi) dismantles a LuthorCorp military camp. At the end of the film, and leading into the credits, we get another licensed track: Swedish band Teddybears' "Punkrocker," featuring Iggy Pop.

The song choice nods to an earlier exchange in the movie, where Clark (David Corenswet) tries to convince Lois (Rachel Brosnahan) that he's "punk rock." When his claim is swiftly and laughingly dismissed,...

I Loved Iggy Pop’s Punkrocker, Now James Gunn Must Use The Perfect Superman Song in Sequel
Image
I watched James Gunn’s Superman and fell in love with ‘Punkrocker’ by Teddybears feat. Iggy Pop. Not just me, the entire world loved James Gunn’s decision to add this song to an already iconic movie, and even Iggy Pop was pleased with it.

Pop, 78, and on his tour, talked to The Hollywood Reporter (July 15) about James Gunn using ‘Punkrocker’ during the closing credits of Superman and how the song was always close to his heart.

I always thought the track had soul. Superman is the best friend you could have.

Being a fan of James Gunn’s movies for a long time, I was obviously in love with the way he uses songs in his movies, but ‘Punkrocker’ literally felt like a chef’s kiss. Here’s why the Iggy Pop song became Superman‘s song, the moment it echoed in those theater screens.

Iggy Pop’s 2006 collab with Swedish band Teddybears on the track “Punkrocker” plays a significant role in the final scene and end credits.

The music icon was reached for comment in Europe, where he is currently on tour, telling The Hollywood Reporter about the song’s inclusion in the film, “I always thought the track had soul. Superman is the best friend you could have.”

“Punkrocker” was originally released by Teddybears in 2000, but the band re-recorded the track with Iggy on vocals for their 2006 album Soft Machine. If the song sounds familiar, it was also used in an ad campaign for Cadillac in 2007.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the song received a massive streaming boost from its appearance in Superman.

Iggy Pop Reacts to 'Superman' Making 'Punkrocker' a Streaming Hit
Image
What do the movies Superman and Trainspotting have in common? Well, they both prominently feature a song by punk rock icon Iggy Pop. He might not be a name audiences would have expected to be paired with Superman, but the first film in the Dcu uses the song "Punkrocker" by the Swedish electronic/alternative group the Teddy Bears, with vocals by Iggy Pop, to close out the movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Punkrocker" popularity rose significantly after Superman's release, with nearly 190,500 streams on July 12 after Superman's opening night, compared to 1,572 streams on the Fourth of July the week prior. Iggy Pop, often called the 'Grandfather of Punk' from his time as the lead singer for the band The Stooges and a successful solo career, spoke about the use of the song in Superman. Pop seems to be very happy to be associated with a character like Superman, saying:

Iggy Pop on Closing Out ‘Superman’ Soundtrack: Hero is “the Best Friend You Could Have”
Image
James Gunn has a way with a movie soundtrack.

That much became obvious with his “Awesome Mix” from the Guardians of the Galaxy films, which featured ’70s soul jams like Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” and Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love,” and the edgier The Suicide Squad soundtrack, which moved into ’80s punk territory with The Jim Carroll Band’s “People Who Died” and “Hey” by Pixies.

With Superman, he’s staying the punk rock course — but brings us into the 21st century with “Punkrocker,” produced by Swedish dance music outfit Teddybears and sung by arguably the greatest punk rocker of all time, Iggy Pop.

The song underscores the blockbuster’s sweetly emotional final scene and continues into the closing credits, capping the well-reviewed and well-attended DC Studios reboot on just the right note of poignant-cool.

Pop, 78, is tickled at playing such a key role in...

Superman Soundtrack: Every Song and When They Play, Explained
Image
James Gunn knows his way around pop songs and important moments for Superman like teenagers at Summerfest. With a ton of songs and a rehashed version of John Williams’ iconic soundtrack, Superman is a must-watch movie.

Not just for its cinematic glory, but the amount of care and love that Gunn put into the character of Clark Kent is truly admirable. The story is not just told through the camera movement or the subtle changes of expressions, but also through the power of music and/or songs. Well, here is every song used in the Superman soundtrack and when they play.

Spoiler Alert !!!Major Spoilers for Superman! 4. Bring Me Sunshine For a Trapped Superman

Yungblud Announces New Documentary ‘Yungblud. Are You Ready, Boy?’ (Exclusive)
Image
British rock act Yungblud is the latest musician to get the documentary treatment, as “Yungblud. Are You Ready, Boy?” is set for a theatrical release in August.

The documentary will follow Yungblud (whose real name is Dominic Harrison) at the famed Hansa Studios in Berlin, the same studio where David Bowie recorded Heroes, Iggy Pop made Lust for Life and U2 record Achtung Baby!, and where the singer recorded live performances of his latest album Idols, which came out June 20.

“I wanted to make a film that truly documents where we are right now, at this moment, around the release of my most ambitious album to date,” Yungblud said in a statement. “Berlin has always radiated complete, unfiltered truth. Every time I’ve visited Hansa Studios, it’s just fucking iconic. You can feel the history in Hansa; it’s in the silence between takes, the ceiling looming over you.

What Song Plays During the End Credits of Superman?
Image
For a movie about one of American culture’s most famous good guys, James Gunn’s new take on Superman contains more talk than you’d expect about what it means to be punk. And that carries through to the movie’s closing credits, which are accompanied by a deep cut from Iggy Pop and the band Teddybears: “Punkrocker.”

“Punkrocker” first appeared on Teddybears’ 2000 album Rock ‘n’ Roll Highschool, and has been covered frequently in the years since: The version that plays over the Superman end credits is from Teddybears’ 2006 album Soft Machine, featuring Iggy Pop’s vocals.

The song’s selection is already making waves: According to Spotify, as of Thursday, July 10th (still a day before the film’s release), streams of “Punkrocker” have increased 530%.

Sound And Vision: Danny Boyle
Image
In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Iggy Pop's Lust for Life, directed by Danny Boyle. It is somewhat baffling to me that Danny Boyle has only made one music video, and it is a tie-in to his film Trainspotting. Boyle is an avid music aficionado, and often has tie-in tracks to his films, like All Saint's Pure Shores for The Beach and Beck's Deadweight for A Life Less Ordinary (the music video of which was directed by no one other than Michel Gondry). Music plays a large role in films like Slumdog Millionaire, with its Bollywood inspired soundtrack and M.I.A.-centerpiece; 28 Days Later's central use of Godspeed You Black...

The Dark Fantastic (2025) Review
Image
The Dark Fantastic is an intimate and enthralling look at the vast career of acclaimed film composer Simon Boswell, an amazing musician who has created music for so many films, particularly in the horror and fantasy genres.

He was responsible for an audio spectrum, from Demons 2, Graveyard Disturbance and Phenomena to Hardware and Perdita Durango, as well as cult classics like Shallow Grave, Hackers and The Crying Game. Throughout his career Boswell has worked with the legendary likes of Lamberto Bava, Dario Argento and Clive Barker and has constantly created vast and compelling music for the films that they feature in. The Dark Fantastic tells the entire story of his career through both music and film.

Far from being a standard documentary where film clips are interspersed with interviews, The Dark Fantastic contains continuous live performances of music that Boswell has created, with details about the particular films and the making of them.

Crafting the ‘28 Years Later’ Soundtrack: How Scottish Band Young Fathers Worked With ‘King of the Needle Drop’ Danny Boyle
Image
Danny Boyle is a director known for his exceptional use of music to score key — and now iconic — scenes in his films. Think Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life” in “Trainspotting” as Ewan McGregor pounded the streets of Edinburgh or the movie’s euphoric closing moments as Underworld’s era-defining track “Born Slippy” played. In fact, think most of the “Trainspotting” soundtrack. Then there was A.R Rahman’s hands-in-the-air anthem “Jai Ho!” from the “Slumdog Millionaire finale, John Murphy’s rousing “Adagio in D Minor” from “Sunshine” (and numerous other subsequent films) and God Speed You Black Emperor’s “East Hastings,” heard as as Cillian Murphy famously wandered the streets of a deserted London at the start of “28 Days Later.”

According to Scottish band Young Fathers, Boyle is the “King of the Needle Drops,” and someone who can throw music — and sometimes not the music you’d expect — into...

6 Bands Whose Names Come From TV Comedies
Image
Comedians long to be rock stars, they say, and rock stars dream of being comedians. For proof, look no further than band names that found their inspiration in TV comedies. The Simpsons and The Brady Bunch alone are responsible for at least seven band names between them.

Here are six bands that found their names tucked into the episodes of their favorite television laughers…

1 Fall Out Boy

The first time Fall Out Boy performed, they introduced themselves as Forget Me Not. When it was time for a more permanent alias, Pete Wentz argued for tongue-in-cheek names while Patrick Stump wanted something that referenced Tom Waits.

A bunch of names went on a list, including Fall Out Boy, an obscure reference to Radioactive Man’s youthful sidekick on The Simpsons. Friends voted on the name, and Fall Out Boy rose to the top.

Other bands with Simpsons-inspired names include the metalcore band Evergreen Terrace,...

This Star Trek guest star got carted off his concert stage... in a coffin
Image
It’s not every day that you see a Star Trek guest star carried off a stage in a coffin during a concert, but it’s happening. Oh, it’s happening. Iggy Pop, he of the long, scraggly hair, raspy voice, and tendency to perform his brand of punk rock shirtless, is 78 years young and in the midst of what he’s called his farewell tour. During a performance at the O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester, England, on May 31, he concluded his night in macabre style: stepping into a coffin and being wheeled off the stage.

Before we get into his Star Trek adventure, here’s a bit of quick background about Pop. He was born James Newell Osterberg Jr. and set about seeking a career in music. He launched Iggy and the Stooges and gained fame, both with the Stooges and solo, for putting on wild shows that, in the eyes of some,...

Cosmic Buzz Films is set to ignite the Raindance Film Festival with the UK premiere of The Dark Fantastic on 26 June. Best known for his groundbreaking scores on over 150 films, Boswell has long been a defining voice in horror and fantasy cinema. Marc Maron Has Regrets About Popularizing the Comedian-Hosted Interview Podcast
Image
Comedian Marc Maron recently announced that he will lock the gates for good this fall and wrap up his popular podcast Wtf.

Over the course of the past 16 years, the show has featured a number of memorable, surprisingly candid interviews with legends like Robin Williams, Iggy Pop and Carol Burnett, plus the occasional awkwardly combative chat with controversial comedy stars like Gallagher and Carlos Mencia.

Maron also hosted a sitting president in his cat-filled garage and became one of the few comics to air their SNL audition grievances right to Lorne Michaels’ face.

His interviews were sometimes uncomfortably honest, with the host unafraid (and even eager) to discuss his own insecurities and past shitty behavior. But the podcast's frank atmosphere allowed us to get to know guests in a setting that seemed to have far fewer guardrails than the typical celebrity interview show. But the big question is: Did Marc Maron create a monster?...

Directed with both academic rigour and stylistic flair, the film acts as both a cultural autopsy and a celebration of a chaotic yet formative period in Spanish film, where sex, violence, and exploitation were both a mirror and a reaction to the nation’s shifting socio-political landscape.

The documentary explores the boom of “Clasificada S” cinema – so named for the adult-only rating these films received – in the 1970s and early 1980s, a time filled with societal and economic changes and new-found freedom following the end of Nationalist rule. These movies, often dismissed as trash or pornography, were actually...

‘Sister Midnight’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Did Uma Turn Into A Vampire?
Image
Karan Kandhari’s debut feature film, Sister Midnight, starring Radhika Apte and Ashok Pathak, is an absurd black comedy with unpredictable twists and turns that will keep you on edge. The film is quite the visual treat; from the very first frame, you can determine that the filmmaker is not interested in grounded portrayal—instead, the interpretation of reality is deadpan, comical, synchronized, and at times poetic. The Wes Anderson style of storytelling— hyperbolic characters, a storybook-like narrative, balanced frames—has also been an obvious influence. Cinematographer Sverre Sørdal captures the essence, or rather the chaos, of Mumbai aptly. It is pretty evident that Kandhari intended the film to be consumed by a global audience in the way he blends the very spatially rooted visuals with a broad range of music (Everything from Cambodian ballads to Iggy Pop and The Stooges). The usual narrative framework is disregarded, and what we witness is pure experimentation,...

Tilda Swinton, Zoë Kravitz and Iggy Pop Put the Fizz in Dom Pérignon’s “Révélations” Party
Image
How does a star decide to collaborate with a famous brand? Is the “yes” rooted in how large or small their role will be, the size of the paycheck or how dazzled they might be by the brand’s reputation?

For Tilda Swinton, it’s about ensuring the experience feeds her limitless curiosity, which she says informs and determines every project. “It feels very natural to me and, in a way, very much a similar formula [to signing on for a film],” Swinton told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview on Friday in London. “There’s no difference between this and getting into a conversation with [writer-director] Apichatpong Weerasethakul, a long-gestating conversation that after 17 years ended up in a movie called Memoria. In life you encounter people that you have inspiring and slightly unfinished conversations with, those conversations keep going, and you just want to be with them.”

Neal Francis Shakes Catholic Guilt, Reimagines His Masculinity on New ‘Return to Zero’
Image
Rising funk/soul sensation Neal Francis has just finished a raucous set at the Orange Peel in Asheville, North Carolina, and the charismatic yet introspective rocker wipes sweat from his face and grabs a seat backstage. The dressing room is purposely quiet and calm, with no one except his bandmates and a curious journalist present.

“More of a focus than ever is just taking care of myself,” Francis tells Rolling Stone. “Getting things out of the way that impede my mental health. I’m just stripping everything down to the...

Bono Breaks Down New Film, ‘Stories of Surrender,’ Teases U2’s Next Album
Image
When Bono hits the road for a tour, he usually brings along about 200 trucks, a stage that weighs roughly 170 tons, hundreds of employees, and three high-school buddies named Adam, Larry, and Edge. But when he went out in early 2023 to promote his memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, he brought little else besides a table and chairs, a fake beer, and a keyboardist, cellist, and harp player.

The shows were a unique hybrid of rock concert and one-man Broadway-style production in which Bono paid loving tribute to his wife, Ali Hewson,...

Fatih Akin Readies ‘Anatolian Dragon’ and ‘Ghosts’ as ‘Amrum’ Premieres at Cannes
Image
German-Turkish director Fatih Akin, whose “Amrum” debuts Thursday at the Cannes Film Festival, is now working on two new films, a documentary, “Anatolian Dragon,” and a narrative feature, “Ghosts,” which will start shooting this summer, he has confirmed to Variety.

The documentary follows Turkish singer-songwriter Gaye Su Akyol as she works on her latest album in Berlin. Iggy Pop is a fan of her music, Akin said, and, like Pop in the 1970s, has found a creative refuge in the city.

“She had to leave Turkey after she got in trouble about her lyrics in this very misogynist society that the country has become,” Akin explained. “In the last five or six years, almost a quarter-million Turkish people, educated people, have left Turkey — doctors, scientists, you know. There has been a huge brain drain.”

Akin, whose parents moved from Turkey to Germany in the 1960s, added: “I would like to...

Five Horror Movie Musicals to Stream This Week
Image
Singing and dancing are an integral part of musicals, never mind that they’re often associated with a much more lighthearted, sentimental tone. That makes musicals feel out of place in the world of horror, a genre dedicated to graphic violence, death, and scaring audiences silly.

Yet, as it’s been proven time and time again, horror plays well with everything, including the movie musical. Movies like Little Shop of Horrors or Phantom of the Paradise showcase the magic of combining genre thrills with earworm songs and lavish production design, further stretching the boundaries of what horror can be.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror musicals, some that aim to tickle the funny bone while others go for the jugular. Here’s where to watch them on streaming this week.

The B-52s’ Kate Pierson talks Rock Hall snub, influencing John Lennon, and fears a solo album would be a ‘betrayal’ to her band
Image
Thirty-five years ago, Athens eccentrics the B-52s experienced one of the greatest, if most bittersweet, against-all-odds comebacks in pop music history. After the 1985 death of guitarist Ricky Wilson, they’d done little promotion for their fourth album, Bouncing Off the Satellites, which was recorded while Wilson was secretly battling AIDS and released just 11 months after he tragically succumbed to that disease at age 32. The future of the B-52s at that point seemed in doubt, but then surviving members Kate Pierson, Fred Schneider, Keith Strickland, and Cindy Wilson (Ricky’s sister) regrouped. The result was 1989’s Cosmic Thing, a surprise mainstream smash that catapulted the band to MTV superstardom, thanks to effervescent partystarters like “Love Shack” and “Roam.”

Only drummer and composer Strickland — who would later take over guitar duties for the band, teaching himself Ricky’s distinctive, three-string, spy-movie-sonics style — was aware of Ricky’s illness at the time,...
