Gold Diggers of 1933
Image
Busby Berkeley’s musical comedy extravaganza not only gets away with a social message, it makes one of the best cultural statements ever about the Great Depression. Social upheaval suddenly being a real thing these days, we understand. The story is a romantic backstage musical but The Wolf at the Door is present in the dialogue, the lyrics, everywhere. This might be the sexiest of Berkeley’s musicals, with even star Joan Blondell teasing the nudity; but audiences were floored when the gala curtain number ‘Remember My Forgotten Man’ shouted out a cry for social justice. Warren William, Aline MacMahon, Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell & Guy Kibbee star; and this is Ned Sparks’ best role, with additional gold-digging by pert ‘n’ perky Ginger Rogers.

Footlight Parade
This amazing Busby Berkeley extravaganza is the best choice to impress newbies to pre-Code musical madness: it is absolutely irresistible. James Cagney’s nervy, terminally excitable stage producer makes the tale of Chester Kent accessible to viewers otherwise allergic to musicals — he’s as electric here as he is in his gangster movies. Remastered in HD, the fantastic, kaleidoscopic visuals will wow anybody — we really expect Porky Pig to pop up and stutter, “N-n-n-o CGI, Folks!”

Mike Gold Shuffles Off to Buffalo
“Shuffle Off To Buffalo” is a song that premiered in the 1933 movie 42nd Street, later to become a Broadway musical. Much, much later. The song was written by the legendary team of Al Dubin and Harry Warren, and the movie in which it was preformed was, very arguably, the most erotic movie Warner Bros. made while the Warner Bros. were still running the joint.

It is in that spirit that I announce that this is my last column for ComicMix. I’ve been here almost 12 years, and I have done nothing else (professionally) for such a long stretch. They say people with short attention spans are the most creative.

No, wait. “They” don’t say that. I do.

There are lots of reasons for my departure, the most significant of which is, quite frankly, I’ve been looking to leave for several years. Again, my short attention span: my professional...

Our Favorite Sci-Fi Movies (That Don’t Begin with “Star”)
Science Fiction has always played a pivotal role in cinema. It is a means by which we can look into the future and speculate as to what “could be”. Our only limit is our imaginations, and our imaginations provide an infinite number of possibilities. With that being said there have been some incredible films that allow us to look forward and wonder, “what if?”. Whether it is the existence of extra terrestrials or humankind’s self destructive nature – these possibilities are fascinating.

While it is easy to point to the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises because they are so iconic, we decided that would be too easy. Below are our favorite Science Fiction films that do not begin with the word “Star”. Did we miss something? Share your favorite with us on Facebook, Twitter, or in the comments below!

Sean Penn and Brad Pitt finally share the same screen
The matching megastars have gone from matinee idols to serious actors; now they face each other as father and son in a film that has set pulses racing in Hollywood

As films go, the ambition of The Tree of Life is hardly small. The eagerly awaited epic from enigmatic auteur director Terrence Malick aims to explore the very meaning of existence in its two hours and 18 minutes run time. News that it is showing at the Cannes film festival has set pulses racing among Hollywood's great and good. But it's not just Malick's lushly artistic directorial style that has people excited. It is the identity of the male leads: Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.

Tree of Life will showcase the acting skills of two of modern Hollywood's biggest stars, appearing in a movie together for the first time. It is a classic piece of casting. "I'm eager to see these two work together,...

"Inception," "The Social Network" Win Writers Guild Awards! Check Out Complete List of Winners and Nominees!
As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."

That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy

For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.
