Is it only incidental that James Cameron’s greatest film clocks in at under two hours? His subsequent films have proven consistently entertaining and frequently excellent, but the lightning of his sophomore feature—a content-to-be-small B movie that nevertheless feels epic in scope and emotion—has yet to strike twice. The Terminator remains as intelligent and emotionally complex as any film of its kind, and the reductive lens of pop culture—to say nothing of intellectual film snobs ignorant to genre pleasures—can’t extinguish its mythic humanist power.
Cameron’s influences include all manner of science fiction, from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Ray Bradbury to Star Wars, but the film’s true creative counterpart might be Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Religious if not outright spiritual, The Terminator is, at its core, a meditation on mankind’s thirst for progress and the likely fallout that results from a lack of self-regulation,...

Spoilers are ahead for Terminator Zero season 1, episode 2.
Before Terminator Zero was released, I really didn't think "The Terminator Theme" could get any cooler but Netflix's anime spin-off proved me wrong. Developed by Mattson Tomlin (The Batman) and directed by animator Masashi Kud (Bleach), the eight-episode series is set in the Terminator universe, but takes our favorite familiar story beats and infuses them with fresh twists. Set primarily in 1997, Terminator Zero's cast of characters navigate the intense hours before Skynet's launch. Notably, the hostile AI will instigate Terminator's Judgment Day, eradicate huge swathes of the population, and ignite the war between humans and machines.
I think one of Terminator Zero's best threads centers on Malcolm Lee (Andr Holland). A scientist who has haunting visions of Skynet's impending nuclear attack, Malcolm believes he can stop Judgment Day by launching his own AI, Kokoro (Rosario Dawson). However,...

James Cameron's "The Terminator" is an undeniable action-horror classic, but seven years later — armed with groundbreaking digital technology and a budget that would make it the most expensive film at the time in history — he completely changed action films forever with "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." In the decades that have followed, countless creatives have desperately been trying to capture a morsel of the feast served up by Cameron, to varying degrees of success. Each "Terminator" sequel since, as well as the short-lived (and underrated) TV spin-off "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" exist in the shadow of Cameron's masterpiece, stalked by the looming threat of his genius not unlike a T-1000 tracking John Connor.
The latest addition to the beloved franchise is Netflix's "Terminator Zero," an anime series from studio Production I.G., written by Mattson Tomlin, and directed by Masashi Kudō (the "Bleach" franchise). Instead of rehashing a storyline that...

James Cameron’s True Lies has long been regarded as a classic action-comedy, blending heart-pounding thrills with laugh-out-loud humor. With its recent release in stunning 4K resolution, this beloved film receives a visual upgrade that breathes new life into its explosive action sequences and vibrant cinematography.
Originally released in 1994, True Lies stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Harry Tasker, a seemingly ordinary computer salesman who leads a double life as a top-secret government agent. Tasker’s world is turned upside down when his wife, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, becomes unwittingly entangled in his espionage activities, leading to a series of high-octane adventures across the globe.

Kathryn Bigelow’s 1990 film Blue Steel flirts with contrivance from the start. Megan Turner (Jamie Lee Curtis) joins the NYPD out of a desire to overcome an abusive childhood with a position of civic authority, then finds her job immediately threatened when a fatal shootout at a convenience store places her under internal-affairs review. To make matters more outlandish, Eugene Hunt (Ron Silver), a commodities trader whose theft of a gun from the crime scene prompted Turner’s investigation in the first place, begins to romantically pursue and eventually outright stalk her.
These are a lot of farfetched narrative strands to pile onto a B movie, but Bigelow uses this setup to deconstruct the eroticized violence of 1980s action cinema in a manner as striking and confrontational as her earlier Point Break. But if that film examined the homosocial bonds between men, Blue Steel leans into complex, insoluble gender politics...

Considering how big the Terminator franchise has been, you’d think there would have been more TV-focused content based on it. Until now, the only T.V. version of the Terminator we had was the (rather good) The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Yet, with the film franchise on ice post-Dark Fate, Netflix is teasing an all-new streaming spin-off, albeit an animated one!
Indeed, as part of their Geeked Week event, the streamer unveiled a teaser trailer (which is little more than a title at this point) for Terminator: The Anime Series. Sporting music that pays homage to Brad Fiedel’s iconic score, the teaser promised a new addition to the franchise from Skydance, Japan Animation Studio Production I.G., and Mattson Tomlin (Mother/Android). At the moment, James Cameron doesn’t seem to be involved.
Here’s the synopsis from Deadline:

Terminator 7 is in the works, and the sequel could wind up being the final nail in the franchise's coffin, but there are still some story directions worth trying that could save these movies. The Terminator franchise, which began in 1984 and has so far reached six movies, a television show, and two web series, has been showing signs of fatigue for some time, so the seventh film installment is a big risk. But it also has the potential to completely revitalize the series.
There are some ideas that would give the next Terminator movie the best chance of success, possibly saving the franchise from extinction. These ideas include everything from drastic wholesale changes to minor tweaks and suggestions. Regardless of how the movie achieves it, most hardcore sci-fi action enthusiasts will want the James Cameron-scripted Terminator 7 to be a triumph. And Skydance Media, the production company behind the franchise, will...

As depicted in James Cameron’s sci-fi classic Terminator 2: Judgment Day, a military defense computer system called Skynet becomes self-aware in the far-flung future of 1997, setting off a nuclear holocaust in an attempt to wipe out the human race. The survivors form a resistance against the malicious A.I., which deploys advanced robotic warriors and drones coined Terminators against the last remnants of humanity.
Set during this war, developer Teyon’s Terminator: Resistance has players taking the role of Pvt. Jacob Rivers, a Los Angeles soldier separated from his squad after being attacked by a new kind of Terminator—an “Infiltrator” that perfectly mimics humans—and takes refuge with a group of survivors trying to escape the city. It’s not a stretch to say that James Cameron’s The Terminator might be one of the most influential movies of all time. Produced on a shoestring budget, The Terminator introduced the world to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 and Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor, mother of the human resistance. In this original classic, Arnie’s T-800 is a terrifying figure, much different from the heroic character we’d come to love in the sequels. Here, he’s sent back to kill Sarah Connor before she can give birth to her son John Connor, only to be protected by a heroic soldier from the future, Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn). With its iconic, menacing score by Brad Fiedel and novel FX via Stan Winston, The Terminator is considered by many to be one of the best sci-fi action hybrids ever. Still, the road to the big screen was not easy for James Cameron’s epic.

You’re terminated… The stakes seem higher than ever these days, whether a Aaa action film is a success or a failure. The amount of money that needs to be pumped into these films, plus the global marketing often means that new ideas are cast aside for the more likely bet of a sequel, prequel or remake. Very quickly then the talk now turns to a “franchise” rather than a film series as, of course now we are talking about funko pops and various other plastic tat that we nerds can’t seem to resist.
On the one hand, it has meant that kids from the 1980s, like me have got to wallow in our own crapulence for years.

“Three billion human lives ended on August 29, 1997. The survivors of the nuclear fire called the war Judgment Day. They lived only to face a new nightmare: the war against the Machines.” – Sarah Connor
Celebrated by fans of the Terminator movie franchise, today marks the anniversary of Judgment Day. Described by both Sarah Connor and the T-800, Judgment Day occured on August 29, 1997. Skynet became self-aware at 02:14 am Eastern Time and launched nuclear missiles at Russia to incite a counterattack against the humans who, in a panic, tried to disconnect it.

This July James Cameron’s seminal sci-fi thriller The Terminator will return to cinemas in the UK on its 35th anniversary. It has been a long road from the very first moments of the film, we’ve seen an epic sequel showcasing the latest in computer generated imagery, a gender-flipped third film which seemed to bring the series full circle, two more sequels hoping to reboot the ailing franchise, and a new film which opens in cinemas this year.
Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in Skydance Productions and Paramount Pictures’ “Terminator: Dark Fate.”

He said he’d be back. Though in fairness, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s killer cyborg has never really been gone for long. It’s the return of James Cameron that’s really the surprise. This year the Terminator returns with a new movie, and a story developed by James Cameron. The sixth Terminator film, which was announced in 2017, finally has a title, one so fittingly Cameron-esque that you can almost hear Brad Fiedel’s iconic score in the background.

John Carpenter’s “Halloween” music? A “Star Wars” compendium? It’s no shock to see these show up on a list of soundtrack label Varèse Sarabande’s historical 10 biggest selling albums. More surprising? Non-genre soundtracks like “Rudy” and “The Man from Snowy River,” which film music fans snatched up in numbers matching some of the more obvious fare. Here are the imprint’s 10 most popular releases from their first 40 years:
1. “Ghost”
Maurice Jarre, 1990
Varèse’s sole platinum album to date, selling an estimated 1.5 million units. Its inclusion of the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody” accounted for many of these sales.
2. “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”
Brad Fiedel, 1991
Fiedel’s electronic score proved enduringly popular.
3. “The Star Wars Trilogy”
Varujan Kojian conducting Utah Symphony, 1983
One of several classic film-score recordings produced for Varèse by George Korngold with London orchestras.

Why does Fright Night, the 1985 vampire teen horror-comedy curio, endure as a great movie long past its expected sell-by date? Because writer/director Tom Holland’s Fright Night extends its core subject matter, vampiric transformation, into a studied allegory for the painful, violent uncertainty of adolescence. And because it unflinchingly tackles the two underlying themes at the core of the best horror fodder: sex and death. In the spirit of Halloween, this writer wanted to tackle one of his favorite ’80s creature features. So welcome to the first Tfh review of Fright Night… for real.

Still looking sharp 26 years since its premiere, James Cameron’s picture completely masters the mass audience thriller while pushing the effects envelope far beyond the industry’s horizon. Technically slick, conceptually brutal, Cameron’s style is what still prevails in action-based Sci-Fi. All this, and Ah-nold too.

Across a varied and illustrious career, New York-born musician Brad Fiedel has conjured up some unforgettable sounds. We’re in the era when franchises are never dead, they just away for awhile. After “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” didn’t meet expectations, it was only two years later that the character was rebooted in “Captain America: Civil War,” and this summer he’ll swing back on the big screen in a new movie, that’s part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Meanwhile, less than two years have passed since rebootquel “Terminator Genisys” bellyflopped, but no matter, because as the famous phrase goes, “I’ll be back.”

While Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s immortal words, “I’ll be back,” helped launch a franchise, and James Cameron‘s vision and unrivaled skill for spectacle cemented its place in cinema history, the “Terminator” series also owes a considerable debt to composer Brad Fiedel. Blockbuster cinema has few opening sequences as strong as the one you'll find in James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day...
For my money, Terminator 2: Judgement Day is a pretty perfect movie. While I know there are certain things people dislike about it (heck, even I could do without the “I need a vacation” line), this is a film that just gets better and better the more I watch it … and I've watched it a lot.
Not always from beginning to end. Not always with my full attention. But if it's on TV, I'll put it on. Thanks to the wonder of digital media, I can also now enjoy it on my phone or tablet wherever I am (and it's testament to the movie that it looks gorgeous on a screen of any size).
It never gets boring. It never makes me cringe. The acting, story,...

Special Mention: Shock Corridor
Written and directed by Samuel Fuller
USA, 1963
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Shock Corridor stars Peter Breck as Johnny Barrett, an ambitious reporter who wants to expose a killer hiding out at the local insane asylum. In order to solve the case, he must pretend to be insane so they have him committed. Once in the asylum, Barrett sets to work, interrogating the other patients and keeping a close eye on the staff. But it’s difficult to remain a sane man living in an insane place, and the closer Barrett gets to the truth, the closer he gets to insanity.
Shock Corridor is best described as an anti-establishment drama that at times is surprisingly quite funny despite the dark material. The film deals with some timely issues of the era, specifically the atom bomb, anti-communism, and racism. It features everything from a raving female love-crazed nympho ward,...

In 1984, James Cameron released his sci-fi thriller The Terminator: the story of a killer cyborg sent from the future, and programmed to kill the mother of a future rebel chief. With Terminator Genisys on the way, Ryan analyses what might just be the most powerful shot in James Cameron's The Terminator...
"...the final battle would not be fought in the future. It would be fought here, in our present. Tonight..."
You can tell a lot about how effective a movie scene is by watching it again with the sound turned off. Stripped of its dialogue, sound effects and music, can the sequence still communicate its message?
James Cameron's The Terminator, blessed though it is with a superb score by Brad Fiedel and numerous quotable lines, could work almost as well as a silent movie. So much of Cameron's feature debut (discounting Piranha II: The Spawning, from which he was fired after just two weeks) is told through body language and skilful shot composition.
Watch The Terminator's opening again without sound, and you'll see just how effective and lean its visual storytelling is.

Musically, "The Terminator" franchise has long been defined by Brad Fiedel's work on the first two films directed by James Cameron. But with the upcoming "Terminator Genisys," the Emmy and BAFTA nominated Lorne Balfe is looking to put his imprint on the series. And as you might imagine, it was quite the task. "The biggest challenge was writing the first note of the score!" Balfe told The Playlist. "As a composer, every project begins with either a blank sequence or a blank manuscript and for the first couple of days you cover and experience every emotion under the sun. Fear being the main one! The hardest part is always the beginning--finding your footing and seeing which sounds are going to carry you through the whole film." A great film score complements without burrowing too far into the ideas, wrestles with genre without locking the picture into a fixed identity, amplifies actors and actress’ choices without spilling the beans. A composer’s job is a balancing act. More and more, movie music finds itself backing off too far, devolving into incidental muzac, or going too far, where full-blast orchestral sounds pummel us like the Transformers’ energon punches. There’s a sweet spot, and the best film scores of the year ride it for an entire runtime. I shouldn’t be surprised that my favorite film scores of the year line-up closely with my favorite films of the year. As someone who goes to the movies with his ears as wide open as his eyes, I found myself captivated by 2014’s audio-visual offerings. Below, what I’d consider the "best" of the year (along with a few runner-ups,...

There is simply all kinds of yes going on in this living one sheet. Not only do we get to see one of the Terminator.s skeletons disintegrate away but there.s the return of Brad Fiedel.s pounding but still mesmeric theme music too. Like everything we've seen or read about Terminator: Genisys, this motion poster is fairly uninteresting. The only thing you may find interesting about the crumbling exoskeleton is the score behind it which sounds like a rock n' roll re-imagining of Brad Fiedel's original, more industrial score.
Do we need more guitar riffs in our Terminator movies? I say, no.

This is the very first time I’ve featured a TV movie on any of my reviews. I’m really surprised that it is. Some solid entries in the annals of horror and sci fi history made their debut on the small screen. “Salem’s Lot” is the first one to come to mind. Although the film that I’m going to talk about isn’t even remotely close to being anything like “Salem’s Lot” (except for having vampires), it does come from a bygone era where things might have been a little tighter on what could be shown on TV.

The work of one of cinema's unsung talents, Shirley Walker, comes under the spotlight in this week's Music in Film...
When I started this soundtrack column, I knew I wanted to talk about some of the most overlooked people in the soundtrack industry: female composers.
Not dissimilar to directing, there are surprisingly few females compared to the number of men in the scoring field, but they’ve done some superb work. Les Mis wouldn’t have happened without Anne Dudley's additional music, Never Let Me Go’s gentle tragedy stemmed in a large part from Rachel Portman, while Lisa Gerrard co-wrote arguably the most influential score of modern times: Gladiator. Lisa won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for her work with Hans Zimmer. The Oscars, on the other hand, only nominated Hans.

There are quite a few practical reasons why so many films from the slasher genre's golden era (late '70s, early '80s) are set in the deep woods: the locations are usually just a matter of finding a suitably creepy local park, film permits usually aren't a concern, and lighting & camera setups are often easier to accomplish than they would on interior locations or sets. But for my money, the backwoods make for some of the creepiest environments for survival horror and suspense, ever since the 1971 classic Deliverance had audiences squealing like pigs. By 1981, Jeff Lieberman had already established himself as a director of unique and entertaining horror films; his bizarre conspiracy thriller Blue Sunshine is a cult classic today, and his gruesome worm-invasion flick Squirm established his skill with queasy horror in a rural setting. Lieberman's horror output thinned out considerably in the years to follow, but he...

Gamers have been singing the praises of the Gears of War series since the first epic installment broke out to major acclaim. That first entry featured a tough, muscular score by the talented Kevin Riepl (Aliens: Colonial Marines) which helped set the gritty, ultra-violent tone of the series and remains one of my personal favorite game scores. Since then, the following two Gow editions went for a more sweeping, grandiose landscape, accompanied by uplifting themes by another celebrated composer, Steve Jablonsky – whose primary credits began in feature films (including the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and its prequel), and whose work in those games took on an appropriately cinematic quality. Jablonsky is joined by Jacob Shea (a frequent collaborator with Hans Zimmer, including The Dark Knight) to accompany the latest chapter in the hit saga, which fuses the heavy, adrenaline-pumping elements of part 1 with the broader canvas of 2 and 3. Much like...

James Cameron's The Terminator is a masterpiece of cinematic storytelling, conceived by Mr. Cameron while in Rome with a fever years earlier (the late director Robert Altman had a similar situation that led to the writing of my favorite film of his, Three Women, released in 1977). Shot in early 1984 for roughly $6M (the amount spent solely on the sound mix of the superb $90M sequel seven years later), this futuristic action powerhouse grabs the audience by the throat and takes us on a wild ride. Despite the inexorable pace – much like the titular villain’s nature – the film manages to come up for air and miraculously never feels over-the-top, long-winded or plodding.
The Terminator opened on Friday, October 26, 1984 and yours truly missed out on seeing it, electing to see the horror film greatest hits compilation Terror in the Aisles instead.

The definition of a slasher film varies depending on who you ask, but in general, it contains several specific traits that feed into the genre’s formula. Author Vera Dika rather strictly defines the sub-genre in her book Games of Terror by only including films made between 1978 and 1984. In other words, she saw it as a movement. When someone describes Brick, they don’t define it as a noir, but instead neo-noir . In other words, it’s a modern motion picture that prominently utilizes elements of film noir, but with updated themes, content, style, visual elements or media that were absent in those from the 1940s and 1950s. So does one consider Scream a slasher film or a neo-slasher, or simply put, a modern slasher?
Some consider Thirteen Women to be the earliest slasher – released all the way back in 1932. Personally I think that is rubbish. Thirteen Women is more like Desperate Housewives on sedatives.

Throughout the month of October, Editor-in-Chief and resident Horror expert Ricky D, will be posting a list of his favorite Horror films of all time. The list will be posted in six parts. Click here to see every entry.
As with all lists, this is personal and nobody will agree with every choice – and if you do, that would be incredibly disturbing. It was almost impossible for me to rank them in order, but I tried and eventually gave up.

Given the amount of marketing dollars behind the recent remake of Fright Night, we’re surprised that Sony didn’t take advantage of the publicity and release a Blu-ray edition of the original film. While we’re not getting a big release with extensive special features, Screen Archives Entertainment has made a deal with Sony to release only 3,000 copies of a Fright Night Blu-ray and we have all the details.
“Specialty label Twilight Time has struck a deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to license and release classic films from the Sony-owned Columbia Pictures library in high-definition Blu-ray editions. In line with Twilight Time’s innovative limited series concept, just 3000 units of each title will be produced, aimed at the collector/classic film aficionado market, and available exclusively online through www.screenarchives.com, the nation’s largest independent distributor of specialty soundtracks.”

Being a Huge fan of the film, I can only think of two words that immediately came to mind when I found out this amazing news that I'm about to lay down right now...At Last The wait is finally over, as it's now been officially announced that the Brad Fiedel score from the 1985 film Fright Night will be made available on CD for the first time on October 18th! Thank God!! For some odd reason this magnificent score has never found it's way onto CD,…...

After reading that headline, some of you are probably saying, "What're you talking about? The Fright Night soundtrack has always been on CD!" No, it hasn't. What you own is likely a bootleg. Hell, I had one until a certain writer here in L.A. borrowed mine and never gave it back (bastard). It doesn't matter, I don't need the bootleg because come October 18 Intrada is giving Brad Fiedel's score to the 1985 Tom Holland film a proper CD release. Here are the details: CD is presented from 1/4" two-track stereo master elements courtesy of both Sony Pictures and composer Fiedel. Some elements were drawn from actual 15 ips mixes, others were from slightly noisier 7 1/2 ips tapes. Rather than meld the two, we are presenting the surviving 15 ips cues as an opening...

For the germophobes and Ocd among us, it's a nightmare scenario. A super-strain of some mutated virus turns lethal, making those microscopic organisms constantly surrounding us more than a mere wintertime annoyance that gives you a sore throat and a stuffy nose. Suddenly, the most mundane everyday objects have been transformed into conduits of death. The metallic shopping cart handle at the local super market, the stair railing at the office, a pump at a gas station, all now minions of the grim reaper, finally justifying the socially awkward fist bump made famous by Howie Mandel.
This doomsday possibility has been explored by Hollywood in previous efforts such as Wolfgang Peterson's Outbreak, but never before has the subject been given the opportunity to play for more than kitsch. With Steven Soderbergh's Contagion, which at times feels almost like a documentary, the apocalyptic flu is finally given the cinematic respect it deserves.

I was shocked at how much I enjoyed “Just Before Dawn.” When you hear the synopsis, first impression leads us to believe it will be run of the mill bad. Jeff Lieberman along with the musical composition of Brad Fiedel (Fright Night, Terminator) lead this backwoods slasher to underrated gold. The movie was first released in 1981 by Paragon Video at the peak of the slasher popularity. With solid more known entries like “The Burning”, could “Just Before Dawn” be good as well? Upon my first viewing, the movie is pretty good for what it had to work with.
The plot is essentially that five campers go to a wilderness mountaintop to have an eventful evening despite ignoring the warnings of the forest ranger. The forest ranger Roy McClean informs them of the bad things that happen in those woods and encourages them to turn around.

A worthy sequel to the original “Fright Night” (1985) is simply called “Fright Night II” from 1988. This movie is barely talked about and has seemingly vanished in to obscurity. After watching this movie several times, I cannot figure why it’s become so rare that you can barely find a cheap copy.
After a very limited theatrical run in the late 1980s, this movie went straight to VHS released in 1989 by Ive (which many may know as the now defunct Artisan Entertainment). After that release, this movie never resurfaced until Artisan released a bare bones DVD in 2003, which was essentially a pan and scan of the VHS a decade earlier. If you can get a hold of either of these copies, you have rareness in your hands. It was made in 2:35:1 aspect ratio yet has only been seen stretched to 1:33:1 so the...
