Was nearly killed on December 13, 2005 in an accident in his home. While leaning back in a chair at his kitchen table, he fell, smashing the back of his head on the floor and causing a double hematoma. He spent months in therapy regaining the ability to speak.

Was introduced to Julie Taymor by a mutual friend in 1980 who felt they shared a similar sense of the grotesque. Although they have been together over 20 years, they have never married.

Was a student of Aaron Copland and John Corigliano.

First Winner of the Life Achievement Kilar Award, of FMF Krakow Film Music Festival, named after late composer Wojciech Kilar, in 2015.
