In Mangal Pandey the synthesis is sometimes synthetic, sometimes sympathetic, and occasionally pathetic. That feeling of witnessing a wondrous eruption of a slice of history is sliced into compartmentalized kitsch. A. R Rahman’s songs don’t help stem the tides of disappointment. Aamir Khan delivers a ‘polished’ performance. From head to toe, he’s tanned in what looks like a light shade of boot polish to play that marvel from the Freedom Movement Mangal Pandey who, it is rightly believed pioneered India’s long struggle to liberty from Colonial rule.

Often the script’s searing and vicious vagaries get more oppressive than the brutal Gora Log who stand around in costumes that seem to have just been bought off the shelf.

Since it hit theatres in India on 5 June 2025, the digital release was expected by the end of July or early August. However, according to 123 Telugu, the negative critical and audience response, coupled with a suboptimal box office performance, led the makers of Thug Life to consider negotiating with Netflix for an earlier Ott premiere.

Right after the intermission, Thug Life takes a plot turn so rushed and so implausible that even a directing maestro like Mani Ratnam and an acting legend like Kamal Haasan, reuniting 38 years after the landmark hit Nayakan, can’t make it work. From there, the film slowly derails. Emotions take a backseat to action. Hurried explanations for what we see are provided via exposition or voiceover. Logic exits the frame.

A key character is threatened, but despite the obvious danger and all the power he wields and the goons at his command, he’s driving alone in the next scene down a desolate road, where of course he gets what was coming to him. Thugs hired to kill somehow bring machetes instead of guns to the fight. There is even a family reunion that feels so clumsy and designed that you can almost visualize the filmmaker moving his characters around like pieces on a chessboard.

Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s highly awaited gangster film, Thug Life, is experiencing a significant decline at the box office. After a fairly solid opening on Thursday, the movie took a steep plunge in earnings by Monday, raking in only about ₹2.25 crore across India on its fifth day — a staggering drop of nearly 85% compared to its first day.

Why was the making of The Legend Of Bhagat Singh so important to you?

I’ll be very honest with you. When I was a child of 13 or 14, I remember asking my father (the late filmmaker P.L.Santoshi) about Bhagat Singh. As the evening fell in Lonavala my father told me all the details about Bhagat Singh’s life . That evening’s conversation with my father remained in my mind . While working with Govindji (Nihalani), I picked up this fine habit of reading . Any city I’d go to, I’m sure to pick up books. That’s how I familiarized myself with Bhagat Singh’s life. Having recently watched Mani Ratnam’s “Thalapathi” (1991) for the first time, I recall with a somewhat baffling fondness the visualisation of the song “Sundari Kannal.” It is a far cry from any sequences set in the present day of the film, as it evokes sequences from Akira Kurosawa’s “Ran” in Rajnikanth’s garments, resembling a samurai, or in his approach to a monument that suspiciously reminds you of the ancient gates in Japan. It is baffling because, irrespective of being clumsy or just for garmenting purposes, Ratnam’s love for Kurosawa is palpable. That love would later be integrated into Ratnam’s powerful use of symbolism or even into the blown-out lighting or the general evocation of a personal epic that he had been trying to bring about in his genre films, succeeding majorly with his 1987 classic “Nayakan.”

Whenever I watch a film like Thug Life, a project that is helmed by greats like Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, the question that comes to my mind is, after watching the final cut, do the creators and actors feel that they didn’t perform at the limits of their potential, do they recognize the flaws? I say this because I was really disappointed after watching this film, maybe because I was really looking forward to the project. The screenplay was just not up to the mark, and I could never feel invested in the story. What’s even more disheartening is that it was one of those rare occasions where A.R. Rahman’s music just didn’t complement the scenes even one bit. Maybe I wouldn’t have called the film a blunder and instead referred to it as a decent watch had the names of such greats not been associated with the project.

The story mainly focuses on Sabari, who is dealing with guilt from his past. As they travel together, the film shows how childhood memories and past events shape their adult lives.

It is a massive pity that Mani Ratnam stopped working with Ilaiyaraja. They are born a day apart , Mani Ratnam on June 2 and Ilaiyaraja on June 3, and share a deep affinity to creating a texture of music that flows organically from the plot. There is nothing imposed or show-stopping about the stunning elegant songs Ilaiyaraja did for Mani Ratnam in Mouna Ragam, Nakshatram , Geethanjali and Anjali.

Each of these were musical milestones and Mani admitted to this writer that his early films would not have made the impact that they did were it not for Ilayaraja’s contribution.

Then came Mani’s Roja and a new composer called A R Rahman. Mani never looked back. Since Roja, it has been Rahman all the way.

British Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has firmly rejected proposals for a levy on streaming platforms operating in the U.K., despite recent recommendations from a parliamentary committee suggesting such a measure could help support the country’s television drama sector.

In an exclusive interview with Variety at the inaugural World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (Waves) in Mumbai on Thursday, Nandy underlined the U.K. government’s reluctance to impose additional financial burdens on streamers at a time when investment in British content is flourishing.

“We’re really excited about the prospect of attracting more investment into the U.K., particularly the big streamers have significantly increased the amount of content that they make in the United Kingdom,” Nandy said. “We don’t want to do anything to deter that investment.
