The Dark Fantastic (2025) Review
Image
The Dark Fantastic is an intimate and enthralling look at the vast career of acclaimed film composer Simon Boswell, an amazing musician who has created music for so many films, particularly in the horror and fantasy genres.

He was responsible for an audio spectrum, from Demons 2, Graveyard Disturbance and Phenomena to Hardware and Perdita Durango, as well as cult classics like Shallow Grave, Hackers and The Crying Game. Throughout his career Boswell has worked with the legendary likes of Lamberto Bava, Dario Argento and Clive Barker and has constantly created vast and compelling music for the films that they feature in. The Dark Fantastic tells the entire story of his career through both music and film.

Far from being a standard documentary where film clips are interspersed with interviews, The Dark Fantastic contains continuous live performances of music that Boswell has created, with details about the particular films and the making of them.

Review: Umberto Lenzi’s Slasher Film ‘Nightmare Beach’ on Kino Lorber 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
Umberto Lenzi’s Nightmare Beach is a prime slice of late-’80s Italian horror filmmaking. Though it may not be as visually stylish as Dario Argento’s Opera or Michele Soavi’s The Church, the film nevertheless delivers the goods sought after by genre aficionados: set pieces of gory violence and unabashed nudity, a raucous heavy metal-infused soundtrack, and a complete disregard for conventional narrative logic. What’s more, in typically Italian fashion, Lenzi’s film gleefully smashes together various genre tropes in engagingly unpredictable fashion.

Glum footballer Skip (Nicolas De Toth) and his horndog buddy Ronny (Rawley Valverde) arrive for spring break in South Florida just as a killer on a motorcycle starts electrocuting young revelers in a variety of amusingly improbable ways. Taking a page from the Jaws playbook, the primary concern of the local bigwigs—Mayor Loomis (Fred Buck), dipso medico Doc Willet (Michael Parks), and brutal...

Severin’s Summer Sale – Full Lineup of New Releases Includes Dario Argento’s ‘Opera’ & More
Image
Underway now through July 16, Severin Films‘ annual summer sale is the most ambitious in the company’s history. The Dario Argento’s Opera five-disc box set — which you can preview in an exclusive clip below — is the headliner, but there are nine more releases in addition to exclusive merchandise and big savings on past inventory.

Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Severin Summer Sale…

Opera

In my eyes — held open with needles, of course — Opera is Argento’s last true masterpiece. While the Italian maestro attained fleeting moments of greatness later in his oeuvre, Opera is the last of his efforts that can hold its own alongside his earlier, career-defining work like Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

Co-written by Argento and frequent collaborator Franco Ferrini, the giallo stars Cristina Marsillach as Betty, a young opera singer whose big break...

‘Dawn of the Dead’ Star Gaylen Ross Recalls the Chaos of Shooting George Romero’s Zombie Classic: ‘Nobody Got Killed’
Image
Gaylen Ross has only a handful of acting credits to her name, but the first of them remains significant enough even today for her to be permanently canonized in horror film history: “Dawn of the Dead.” Playing television producer Fran Parker for writer-director George A. Romero, Ross joins what’s otherwise a boys’ club cast to combat zombies (and post-apocalyptic boredom) in an abandoned shopping mall, in the process adding to the genre’s then-nascent collection of heroines who are forced to summon strength and resourcefulness in the face of unimaginable — and deadly — circumstances.

In the 45 years since the film’s release, Ross became an award-winning documentary filmmaker, trading Romero’s anti-consumerist metaphors for more literal explorations of social and historical causes with films like “Killing Kasztner” and “Beijing Spring.” Yet as she raises funds for her latest project, “Sapiro: The Jew Who Sued Ford,” “Dawn of the Dead’s...

All My Friends Are Dead follows a group of close college friends who get a steal on a killer Airbnb for the biggest music festival of the year. They soon discover that each one of their deaths directly corresponds to one of the seven deadly sins.

Italian Horror Classic ‘Demons’ Resurrected With a Live Performance from Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin [Event Report]
Image
“Tonight we have special news for you: we closed all the exits. You can’t escape,” Claudio Simonetti deadpanned in his Italian accent to the enthusiastic crowd at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, Massachusetts on October 3. Clad in something like a ringmaster jacket over a Deadpool T-shirt, a smile beamed across the maestro’s face.

The audience erupted into laughter chased by cheers, as they knew they were about to experience something special: the 1985 cult classic Demons on the big screen with a live score performed by Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin, a modern tribute to the prolific Italian prog-rock composers Goblin fronted by the founding keyboardist.

Produced by Italian master of horror Dario Argento — for whom Goblin had previously composed several scores — Demons is directed by Lamberto Bava from a script written by Bava, Argento, Dardano Sacchetti (The Beyond), and Franco Ferrini (Phenomena). The plot finds attendees at a mysterious...

Watch Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin Perform ‘Halloween’ and ‘The Exorcist’ Themes Live! [Video]
Image
Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin is currently touring North America with a live score to Lamberto Bava’s Demons. That alone is worth the price of admission, but the band follows it with a full greatest hits concert.

While the majority of the set consists of classic Goblin cues from the likes of Dawn of the Dead, Suspiria, and Deep Red, the band also performs renditions of John Carpenter’s Halloween theme and Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells” from The Exorcist.

Enjoy my live footage of the covers from last night’s event at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, Massachusetts:

“I have two favorite horror films, also for the music, and we did a special arrangement for these two songs,” Simonetti told the audience. “One is Halloween, and the second is ‘Tubular Bells’ from The Exorcist.” The crowd erupted as he began playing the iconic Halloween theme.

Simonetti and his bandmates — guitarist Daniele Amador,...

Claudio Simonetti Hits the Road to Perform the ‘Demons’ Score Live Across the Country [Interview]
Image
Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin — founding keyboardist Claudio Simonetti’s modern manifestation of prolific Italian prog-rock composers Goblin — hits the road today to perform a live score to Demons followed by a set of other classic Goblin tracks across North America.

“Normally I play the same films, like Deep Red and Suspiria,” Simonetti tells me. “I have seen Demons with the actors at conventions, and I think that people love this film. It’s a cult film. I said, ‘Why don’t we try to do Demons live?’ It’s the first time. I never did it before. We have had a lot of rehearsals this summer.”

Originally, Simonetti wanted to do a Dawn of the Dead tour in celebration of the film’s 45th anniversary. “It’s one of my favorites, of course, but we are having some troubles with the producer for the rights to play the score live.

‘Tenebrae’ 4K Ultra HD Review – Synapse Brings Dario Argento’s Elegant Visuals to New Heights
Image
After helping to pioneer Italy’s budding giallo genre throughout the 1970s with influential titles like The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Cat o’ Nine Tails, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, and Deep Red, Dario Argento took a brief sabbatical from the lurid thrillers to explore supernatural elements in Suspiria and Inferno. When the latter failed at the box office, he made a triumphant return to gialli in 1982 with Tenebrae (sometimes spelled Tenebre; originally released in the US as Unsane).

While his American contemporaries were trying to come up with inventive instruments of death to propel slasher films, Argento was designing more lavish ways to film his kill scenes. Suspiria remains his crowning achievement, but Tenebrae finds the filmmaker bringing his honed visual panache to the giallo sandbox in which he made a name for himself. The result stands not only as one of Argento’s strongest efforts but also a landmark giallo work.

‘Phenomena’ 4K Review – Dario Argento’s 1985 Horror Movie Returns to 4K With New Standard Edition
Image
Phenomena is a substantially different movie depending on how you first saw it. Audiences in its native Italy were able to see the original 116-minute film as director Dario Argento intended for its initial release in 1985. That cut was pruned down to 110 minutes for international release. In America, however, New Line Cinema cut the picture to 83 minutes before putting it out under the title Creepers in 1986. Finding its audience in the VHS rental market, this was the only version available in the US until DVD came around.

Each version has its advantages and disadvantages. The original integral cut contains everything, but it drags a bit in the middle and there are a few moments that were never dubbed into English. The international version is a bit tighter, mostly trimming frames and sacrificing only a few lines of dialogue. Those who grew up with the Creepers cut may prefer its punchier pace,...

Holiday Gift Guide: 10 Vinyl Soundtracks for the Horror Fan
Image
Music is intrinsically and irrevocably intertwined with cinema; it is never more vital than in horror. What builds mood, tension, and fear better than sound design and an unsettling score?

This Gift Guide is for the music lover. More specifically, it’s for the horror fan that collects vinyl soundtracks, from recent releases to recently unearthed rarities and beyond.

Here’s what you need this year…

The Black Phone Ost

“The score for the film was created by composer Mark Korven, the mastermind behind The Witch, The Lighthouse, and Into the Tall Grass. Korven is a Toronto-based award winning composer and multi-instrumentalist. He is known for his innovation and experimental approach to film scoring. In 2016, Korven conceived the notorious horror musical instrument, The Apprehension Engine.”

In other words, a unique horror film score worth grabbing on vinyl.

Firestarter (2022) Ost

Celebrating 45 Years of ‘Suspiria’ With a Live Performance from Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin [Event Report]
Image
45 years after its release, Dario Argento‘s Suspiria remains one of the most breathtaking horror films ever committed to celluloid. Its unparalleled visuals – vibrantly colored lighting, unconventional camerawork, opulent production design, extravagant death scenes – are complemented by a memorable score from frequent Argento collaborators, Goblin.

Goblin founding keyboardist Claudio Simonetti now performs with a new manifestation of the prolific Italian instrumental act – officially branded as Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin to avoid confusion with the other incarnation of Goblin featuring different legacy members that remains active concurrently.

Simonetti is accompanied by guitarist Daniele Amador, bassist Cecilia Nappo, and drummer Federico Maragoni. Together they’re celebrating Suspiria‘s 45th anniversary with a tour in which they perform the score live to the film followed by a set of other Goblin classics. I caught the sold-out stop at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, Ma on November 8.

I’m unsure what source was used...

His daughter, Valerie paid respects to her father and announced the funeral would take place this weekend in Rome. “It is with indescribable pain, a pain that trumps words, that breaks the breath and hammer the heart, that I announce the death of my father,...

Arrow announce Demons 1 & 2 coming to 4K Uhd!
Image
Arrow Video have announced brand new 4K restorations of both Demons and its sequel Demons 2, presented in more vivid and terrifying ways than ever before, alongside a wealth of bonus features old and new, making this the ultimate experience in celluloid terror.

In the early 1980s, Dario Argento, the famed horror maestro responsible for such classics as Suspiria and Deep Red, branched out from directing into producing, shepherding the work of his fellow filmmakers to the screen – among them Lamberto Bava, son of the legendary Mario Bava. Together, they crafted two tales of terror that would become synonymous with Italian 80s horror, in which the veil between the real world and the silver screen is torn asunder.

In 1985’s Demons, a motley assortment of unwitting filmgoers accept invitations to a screening at the mysterious Metropol theatre. However, as the brutal slasher film unspools, the horror breaks free from the constraints of the screen,...

Notebook Soundtrack Mix #10: The Black Belly of Giallo
Image
Part of our on-going series Notebook Soundtrack Mixes.Forever on the edge of one's seat, giallo is the provider of all the glamorous and hallucinatory emotions. The film genre and its musical sister is somewhat a crown jewel when it comes to detailed niches, sub-genres, and die hard fans. Original LP records from the giallo genre can cost a hefty sum and the blossoming vinyl reissuing industry (an exciting addition over recent decades) proves how enduring the genre and its sub-genres are. This giallo bonanza comes in just shy of two hours and you will find both influential and cherished moments and secluded moments on the sidelines. That, for me, showcases its textures and ultimately what a fun, trippy genre it is. The work of the masters is in full swing, beloved composers such as Bruno Nicolai, Nora Orlandi, Riz Ortolani, and Goblin all have turns. And of course, the...

Following their release of Suspiria, CultFilms return to the oeuvre of Dario Argento with a brand new restoration of Argento’ visionary horror masterpiece Opera, which stars Cristina Marsillach, Ian Charleson (Chariots of Fire) and Daria Nicolodi (Deep Red); and features music by Brian Eno, Bill Wyman, long-time Argento favourite Claudio Simonetti and the divinity herself Maria Callas.

Dario Argento in Dracula 3D (2012)
Goblin to Live Score Original Suspiria Screenings This Fall
Dario Argento in Dracula 3D (2012)
Dario Argento's Suspiria is a classic psychological horror movie, which was made even more creepy by the original score from Italian prog rock band Goblin. Whispers, analog synthesizers, chiming bells, and more were all combined to create the soundtrack in a matter of weeks in 1977. Since then, the sounds that Goblin created in the studio have gone on to influence everybody from horror icon John Carpenter to current bands like Secret Chiefs 3 and Goat. The band has announced a North American tour that will see them playing the score live to screenings of Suspiria this fall.

The special Goblin Suspiria live screenings are going to be pretty special events. Founding keyboardist Claudio Simonetti is bringing the band back to North America after some successful shows last fall that will also be able to capitalize on the Suspiria remake, which will be hitting theaters in November. The tour will begin October 28th in Baltimore,...

‘Suspiria’: Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin Will Play Its Iconic Score in Its Entirety on Fall Tour
Suspiria (1977)
2018 appears to be the year of “Suspiria.” In addition to “Call Me by Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino’s highly anticipated remake of Dario Argento’s classic giallo, this fall will also see Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin go on tour to perform its iconic score for the original film in its entirety. Each show will feature a screening of the film, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year; to mark that occasion, Goblin reissued said score on vinyl.

Thom Yorke of Radiohead is scoring this new take on the film, which stars Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth, and Jessica Harper. Though his bandmate Jonny Greenwood has received widespread acclaim for his musical stylings on films like “There Will Be Blood” and “Phantom Thread,” Yorke hasn’t worked on a high-profile film project before.

Here are the dates for Goblin’s tour, which begins just before Halloween...
