The Cinema Audio Society has its new board of directors and officers.

Peter Kurland, who quit the Movie Academy last year over its plan to cut Best Sound and seven other categories from the live Oscarcast, was elected president of Cas, replacing Karol Urban. VP Steve Venezia, Secretary Frank Morrone and Treasurer Lee Orloff were re-elected to their respective posts.

Magnolia Pictures has released the official trailer for “Little Richard: I Am Everything,” Lisa Cortés’ latest documentary, which focuses on the iconic rock n’ roll musician Richard “Little Richard” Penniman.

The film explores how Little Richard and the Black queer origins of rock n’ roll founded the whitewashed canon of American pop music. The documentary follows how Richard contributed and created a self-expressive art form for musicians that ultimately would shape the music industry throughout the following decades. “Little Richard: I Am Everything,” interview subjects include the musician’s family, Black and queer scholars and celebrity subjects including Billy Porter, Mick Jagger, Sir Lady Java, John Waters, Nile Rodgers and many more.

“Little Richard: I Am Everything” was directed by Lisa Cortés (“All In: The Fight For Democracy”), executive produced by Dee Rees and produced by Robert Friedman, Cortés, Liz Yale Marsh and Caryn Capotosto.

Steve Venezia has been re-elected vice president of the Cinema Audio Society, and Frank Morrone has been re-elected secretary. They will continue to serve alongside Cas president Karol Urban and treasurer Lee Orloff, who weren’t up for re-election this year.

Mark Lanza Re-Elected President Of Motion Picture Sound Editors; David Barber Elected Secretary

Mark Lanza has been re-elected president of the Motion Picture Sound Editors, the nonprofit organization of professional sound and music editors.

Currently based at Sony Pictures Studios, Lanza has been a sound professional for 30 years and is credited on more than 250 feature films and television shows, including JFK, Glory and Born on the Fourth of July. He received the Mpse’s Golden Reel Award for Amazon’s Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams in 2019.

“I am proud to be an Mpse member and grateful to my fellow members for entrusting me with another term as president,” Lanza said. “I look forward to working with the Board in continuing to grow Mpse and expand our work on behalf of sound editors.”

Cinema Audio Society picks new officers
Richard Lightstone
Edward Moskowitz has been named president of the Cinema Audio Society, outgoing president Richard Lightstone announced on Monday. Lightstone has held the post for four years.

The other new officers of the organization, which represents the industry's sound professionals, are David Bondelevitch, vp; R.D. Floyd, treasurer; and Peter Damski, secretary. New directors are Agamemnon Andrianos, ; Brydon "Beau" Baker, Richard Branca, James Coburn IV, John Coffey, Chris Elam, Ed Greene, Melissa Hofmann, Sherry Klein, Michael Minkle and Fred Tator. Alternates are Joe Foglia, Paul Vik Marshal, Ken Polk and Greg Watkins.

MPSE taps Lucas for film nod
George Lucas has been chosen to receive the Motion Picture Sound Editors' inaugural Filmmaker's Award. The award will be presented at the 52nd annual Golden Reel Awards, to be held Feb. 26 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City. Lucas is being recognized by the MPSE for his consistently innovative and groundbreaking use of sound technology in his films and for the enormous contributions he has made to advancing the state of sound in the moviegoing experience. "It is appropriate that the man who gave us 'Star Wars' and THX sound will be the first person to receive the award," MPSE president David Bondelevitch said. The Motion Picture Sound Editors have selected nominees in 19 categories for the 51st annual Golden Reel Awards. The Walt Disney Co.'s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl anchored three noms in the feature film race. Miramax's Cold Mountain, Dimension Films' Kill Bill-Vol. 1, Warner Bros. Pictures' The Last Samurai, New Line Cinema's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, 20th Century Fox's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Universal Pictures' Seabiscuit and Screen Gems' Underworld each received two nominations. Hall sounds off for MSPE career nod
Don Hall, a sound editor who has overseen more than 90 feature films, will receive the Motion Picture Sound Editors' Career Achievement Award. Hall is a founding member of the MPSE and has served on the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' sound branch and is a lecturer at the USC School of Cinema. "In addition to being a brilliant sound editor, Don brings a warmth to his work that is unmatched," MPSE president David Bondelevitch said. "He has also been a mentor to innumerable students of sound." The award will be presented at the 51st annual Golden Reel Awards on Feb. 28 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City.
