Star Trek alum Jeri Ryan books mystery role in Paramount+ original
Image
It looks like a famous Star Trek alum is about to beam on board a popular crime drama in a mystery role!

Star Trek actors have often done well avoiding being typecast outside of the franchise. William Shatner struggled for years to escape the shadow of Kirk but succeeded with T.J. Hooker and Boston Legal. Other actors have done well with non-Trek roles, and while still connected to the franchise, stand on their own.

One of the best examples is Jeri Ryan. Before Star Trek: Voyager, her biggest role was on the short-lived NBC sci-fi drama Dark Skies. It was her turn as Seven of Nine that boosted Ryan to fame, and her portrayal of the former Borg made her an instant sci-fi fan favorite.

Since Voyager ended, Ryan has stayed busy on TV. She’s had roles on Boston Public, Shark, Body of Proof, Leverage, and Bosch, along with numerous guest star roles.

In the finale of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3, the Bau seemingly bids farewell to Zach Gilford's Elias Voit and looks ahead to what's next. For arguably the first time in the Paramount+ revival's history, there isn't a massive cliffhanger to address.

The path for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 4 may be a little clearer now, as Messer confirms to TVLinethat veteran actress Jeri Ryan has joined the show. Although exact details about who Ryan will be playing are not known, Messer talks in the quote below about how Ryan's iconic Star Trek connects her to the Paramount+ crime drama:

“Jeri had worked with the director of the premiere, Doug Aarniokoski, for years on Star Trek, so they’ve known one another. ... But yeah, Jeri is amazing.”

A New Dimension of Terror: 6 Underrated Horror Movies Shot in 3D
Image
For as long as there have been films, there have been filmmakers attempting to enhance the theatrical experience through the use of gimmicks. From the red-eyed skeletons of William Castle to the “odorama” cards of John Waters’ Polyester, gimmicks are the puns of the filmmaking world: memorable and effective in small quantities, but annoying when overused.

That’s why I get why so many people reject 3D cinema. After all, modern theater screens ended up becoming oversaturated with lazily post-converted cash-grabs rather than movies that were shot on actual stereoscopic cameras. However, having just recently fixed my own aging 3D TV and binge-watched dozens of gimmicky genre films, I’m pleased to say that there are a surprising number of fun 3D experiences beyond the usual suspects.

With that in mind, here’s a list recommending six underrated horror movies that were shot in 3D!

As usual, don’t forget...

Star Trek: Discovery Director Admits Production Error Like Game Of Thrones' Coffee Cup
Image
Director Doug Aarniokoski's baseball cap makes a cameo in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, but it's not as glaring as Game of Thrones' infamous coffee cup. Research consultant Jorg Hillebrand confirms the crew member in the background of Discovery season 5, episode 2, adding to Trek's history of production slip-ups. Aarniokoski takes responsibility for the cap appearance, admitting to the oversight in a humorous mea culpa on Twitter.

Star Trek: Discovery director Doug Aarniokoski admits that his baseball cap is briefly visible in Discovery season 5, episode 2, "Under the Twin Moons." In Discovery's defense, however, the production gaffe isn't anywhere near as noticeable as the infamous coffee cup that was seen in Game of Thrones season 8, episode 4, "The Last of the Starks." Game of Thrones' mistake sparked an online discourse of jokes and memes, especially since so much attention was paid to the final season of HBO's hit fantasy series.

Captain Rayner in Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 may be abrasive at first, but fans will grow to love his driven and determined character. Director Doug Aarniokoski predicts that Rayner has the potential to become a beloved breakout character, similar to Captain Liam Shaw from Star Trek: Picard. Despite being rough around the edges, Captain Rayner is compared to Quint from Jaws - fans may not like him at first, but will root for him in the end.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's new series regular, Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), is a character fans may not like at first but they will grow to love, predicts director Doug Aarniokoski. Rayner was introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere, "Red Directive," as the Captain of the USS Antares. In Discovery season 5, episode 2, "Under the Twin Moons," directed by Aarniokoski, the abrasive Rayner is demoted for insubordination,...

‘Star Trek: Picard’s Patrick Stewart On His Franchise And The Family In It: “It Has Held On. It’s Been Strong” – Contenders TV

Patrick Stewart can still remember the feedback he got in 1987 when he was offered the chance to first play Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

“I was advised by people who knew our industry very well that there was little chance that this show, whether I did it or not, was going to be a success,” Stewart recalled Saturday during a panel for Paramount+’s Star Trek: Picard at Deadline’s Contenders Television. “You cannot revive an iconic show like Star Trek, you can’t do it. You’ll be lucky to make it halfway through the season.”

But Stewart relished the idea of coming to California to “get a sun tan and meet some girls.” More importantly, he was about to make some money for the first time in his life “which I had never done. I was a stage actor.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 TV Review
Image
Plot: After receiving a cryptic, urgent distress call from Dr. Beverly Crusher, Admiral Jean-Luc Picard enlists help from generations old and new to embark on one final adventure: a daring mission that will change Starfleet, and his old crew forever.

Review: When the first season of Star Trek: Picard debuted, I gave it a glowing review. I had only seen the first episodes of the season, and while I liked the entirety of it, I was underwhelmed by the uneven ending. The same thing happened for season two: I loved the return of more Next Generation characters, and the early episodes I was given were great, but the season did not stick the landing. I went into the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard cautiously optimistic but prepared to be underwhelmed as I was twice before. Thankfully, this season pivots entirely away from the two that came before...

Puppet Master 4 (1993) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Chris Farley and David Spade in Black Sheep (1996)
A new episode of the Black Sheep video series has just been released, and in this one we’re directing some praise toward an underappreciated entry in Full Moon’s Puppet Master franchise. That entry is the 1993 release Puppet Master 4 (watch it Here), and you can find out why we think it deserves more respect by checking out the video embedded above!

Directed by Jeff Burr from a script crafted by Charles Band, Steven E. Carr, Todd Henschell, Keith S. Payson, Jo Duffy, and Douglas Aarniokoski, Puppet Master 4 was shot back-to-back with the following year’s Puppet Master 5. The synopsis for Part 4 goes like this: The mini-menaces Blade, Tunneler, and Pinhead go toe-to-toe with their most menacing enemy yet – a team of terrifying, gremlin-like creatures known as “Totems” that are sent by the evil Egyptian demon Sutekh to recapture the magic stolen by Toulon. ‘Star Trek: Picard’: Patrick Stewart Leaves Door Open To Return As Paramount+ Series Heads Into Final Season
Image
Patrick Stewart’s Picard is heading into its third and final season at Paramount+.

However, the venerable British actor is leaving the door open to return to Star Trek: Picard, as is exec producer Alex Kurtzman, who also alluded to more series coming to the sci-fi universe.

Star Trek: Picard features Stewart reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and follows his character into the next chapter of his life.

Stewart said there’s still potential to return in future after this season, despite it being the final one.

“There is still enormous potential for matters in what we can do and there are doors left open and we didn’t close all of them,” he said at Paramount+ TCA press tour.

Kurtzman said “anything is possible”. “If the show blows the doors off the place, and we’re...

“Who knows?” executive producer Alex Kurtzman said when asked about the ending of the series, with star Patrick Stewart saying that if the show could “maintain the work quality” of the first three seasons, he would be open to reappearing. He also noted that the storylines of the final season intentionally “leave doors open.”

A new trailer for the third and final season of Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Picard” launched out of New York Comic Con Saturday, revealing new additions to the Patrick Stewart-led show’s cast — including the return of some iconic villains from “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

Per Paramount+, Brent Spiner will be back on “Picard,” not as Data, but as a character the streamer describes as “named Lore” — evoking one of the most formidable villains in “Next Generation” history: Data’s evil twin brother, Lore, who was defeated and disassembled at the beginning of Season 7 of “Next Gen.” Additionally, Daniel Davis will return as Professor Moriarty from “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the Holodeck personification of a fictional character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to be an enemy for Sherlock Holmes. “Next Gen’s” Moriarty ended up becoming self aware.

“This message is for Admiral Jean-Luc Picard,” McFadden’s Dr. Beverly Crusher says in the trailer. “We need your help.”

Disasterpiece ‘Nurse 3D’ Is the Definition of Modern Camp [Horror Queers Podcast]
Kirstie Alley, Ellen Barkin, Kirsten Dunst, and Denise Richards in Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)
The Answer is Nurse. Last week Trace and I kicked off our Summer of Camp marathon with the satirical romp Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), a film so hilariously offensive that it could never be made today. This week, our second film begs the question: what were they thinking when they made this?! Doug Aarniokoski‘s Nurse 3D […]

‘Star Trek: Picard’ Beams Up ‘The Next Generation’ Main Cast for Season 3
Image
Jean-Luc is getting the old gang back together.

“Star Trek: The Next Generation” stars LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis and Brent Spiner will join Patrick Stewart for the third and final season of the Paramount Plus series “Star Trek: Picard.”

Spiner has played several characters on “Picard” in Season 1 and 2 (which is currently streaming), including his original role of the android Data; Frakes and Sirtis appeared in one memorable episode of “Picard” in Season 1 as William T. Riker and Deanna Troi. And Whoopi Goldberg reprised her role as Guinan in the Season 2 premiere. But this will be the first time the main “Tng” cast — including Burton as Geordi La Forge, Dorn as Worf, and McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher — has performed on screen together since the 2002 feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis.”

The announcement — featured in a video of all the “Tng” actors talking about getting...

‘Red Sonja’ Will Star ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Actor Hannah John-Kamen
Image
“Red Sonja” has found its star.

Hannah John-Kamen, best known as the villain Ghost in “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” will wield the sword of the comic book fantasy hero in Millennium Films’ long-gestating feature adaptation. Joey Soloway (“Transparent”) is directing the film, from a script by Soloway and Tasha Huo (a writer on Netflix’s upcoming “Tomb Raider” TV series).

“Hannah is a very talented actress who we’ve been following for years and she is Red Sonja,” Soloway said in a statement. “Her range, sensibilities and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey together.”

Created in the early 1970s by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel’s “Conan the Barbarian” comics, Red Sonja quickly became popular enough for her own spinoff series. That is certainly due in part to the character’s formidable fighting skills and forthright personality,...

CBS Reveals Full Details For Star Trek: Short Treks, To Premiere Next Month
CBS All Access has big, big plans for the Star Trek franchise, and don’t we know all about it.

In the immediate future, we have the second season of Discovery to look forward to, which will bring with it the introduction of new versions of Spock, Captain Pike and more, while also promising a lighter tone and more cheerfulness amongst the crew, after the grim and dark rookie outing.

But before that, the network will be rolling out Star Trek: Short Treks, four standalone stories that will premiere on October 4th and focus on characters from Discovery. We’d heard about the project a few months ago but now, we’ve got all the details, and it certainly sounds exciting.

From what we understand, the individuals who’ll take the spotlight in these shorts are Mary Wiseman (Tilly), Doug Jones (Saru) and Rainn Wilson (Harry Mudd), along with a...

‘Star Trek: Short Treks’ Set At CBS All Access Ahead Of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Return
The Star Trek franchise is expanding on CBS All Access. The streaming service has announced Star Trek: Short Treks, four stand-alone short stories that will begin rolling out on Thursday, October 4 ahead of the early 2019 Season 2 return of Star Trek: Discovery.

Each of the four stories will center on a key character, including familiar faces from Star Trek: Discovery: Mary Wiseman (Tilly), Doug Jones (Saru) and Rainn Wilson (Harry Mudd), in a short he will also direct, as well as a new character unfamiliar to fans, Craft, played by Aldis Hodge.

Star Trek: Discovery follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new life forms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series features a new ship and new characters while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that...

Red Sonja Remake Revs Back Up with X-Men: First Class Writer
Millennium Films is making another push to bring a new Red Sonja movie to the big screen, nearly a decade after it first started developing the remake. The production company has enlisted Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class) to write the screenplay, although no director is attached at this time. Millennium Films' Avi Lerner is putting this on the fast track to production, after the massive success of Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman, which over performed at the box office last summer taking in $412.5 million domestic and $821.8 million worldwide. Here's what Miller had to say in a statement about coming aboard to write Red Sonja.

"It's an exciting opportunity to faithfully adapt the amazing Hyborean world Robert E. Howard created, and inject it with Sonja's intelligence, ferocity, and fearless humanity. I want people to love Sonja the way I love her, and walk out of the theater understanding why she's so popular and enduring.

Paz de la Huerta Files Lawsuit, Claiming 'Nurse 3D' Ended Her Career
My familiarity with Paz de la Huerta is limited. I've seen only the first season of "Boardwalk Empire", never seen Enter the Void and I don't remember her in Choke or Deception. However, I am familiar with her name and her name seemed to be everywhere around the time promotion for Nurse 3D began around the end of 2013. A blood-soaked and naked De La Huerta was featured in the marketing for a film in which she played a nurse that exacted murderous revenge on adulterous men. The film looked awful and I can't even remember if there was a press screening here in Seattle, but I do remember it quickly being panned by most that saw it or accepted merely as an exploitation flick by those that endorsed it. Well, as far as De La Huerta is concerned, it ended her career. readmore postid="141892" In a story at TMZ they...
