‘Succession’s’ Hiam Abbass Set to Play Lead in Talal Selhami’s Hot Package Horror Project ‘The Shelter’ (Exclusive)
Image
The often superb Hiam Abbass, a star in ‘Succession,” “Lemon Tree” and “The State,” is set to play lead Leila in on-the-rise Moroccan genre pioneer Talal Selhami’s “The Shelter” (“Le Refuge”), which is produced by Sophia Menni at top Moroccan production house La Prod. founded by Lamia Chraibi.

Selhami’s most ambitious movie to date, and an arresting attempt to picture literally the lifelong mental trauma of war filtered through the prism of a horror movie, “The Shelter” was already being talked up as one of the buzz movies to be pitched at Fantasia’s Frontières International Co-Production Market, running July 23-26.

Abbass’ coup casting now catapults “The Shelter,” a psychological horror movie, into the zone of must-check-out titles at Frontières’ event, one of the world’s key genre emporiums.

Kenneth Branagh, Producer Charles Roven Set For ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ At Amazon MGM
Image
Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios’ Michael B. Jordan-directed reimagining of The Thomas Crown Affair has added a pair of Oscar winners to its team: Kenneth Branagh (Belfast), who joins in an undisclosed (we’re told villainous) role, and producer Charles Roven (Oppenheimer), who will produce the film via his Atlas Entertainment banner, alongside Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo via Outlier Society, and others.

As previously announced, Jordan and Taylor Russell lead the cast of the film, which shoots this summer and is slated for an exclusive theatrical release on March 5, 2027.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, both the original 1968 film from United Artists and the 1999 remake from MGM were heist stories revolving around a wealthy, thrill-seeking man who orchestrates a high-stakes robbery simply for the challenge, only to find himself entangled in a complex cat-and-mouse game with a brilliant investigator.

As previously reported, Drew Pearce wrote the script for The Thomas Crown Affair,...

Amman’s Pitching Platforms Titles Catches the Range, Depth and Nuance of New Titles from Emerging Arab World Talent
Image
Lina Soualem’s Spain-set family tale “Alicante,” “Asphalt,” the big winner at this year’s Cannes Docs-in-Progress, and “Printemps,” from Berlin laureates Noel and Michelle Keserwany, look like potential standouts at this year’s Amman Intl. Film Festival’s Pitching Platforms.

The rich lineup underscores the vast range of output and depth of talent from emerging filmmakers in the Arab world.

The Pitching Platforms offer three sections: one dedicated to first-time Jordanian filmmakers, one for Arab projects in development, and one for Arab projects in post-production. Some of the filmmakers presenting projects have already begun to make their mark. Soualem, for instance, attracted heat with 2023 Venice and Toronto title “Bye Bye Tiberias,” about her mother Hiam Abbas. The Keserwany sisters won the Berlinale best short Golden Bear in 2023 for “Les Chenilles.” Attached to direct “The Orange Grove,” one of the Platform’s biggest entries, Amman-born Murad Abu Eishe won a Student Oscar.

Whenever he is not busy stepping on heads at company headquarters or playing emotional and intellectual mind games on his children, he spends much of his time in his luxury penthouse. ‘My Favourite Cake’ Directors Given Suspended Jail Sentence in Iran for Showing an Unveiled Woman
Image
Iranian directorial duo Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha have been given a 14-month suspended jail sentence by an Iranian court on charges that include alleged production of obscene content pertaining to their film “My Favourite Cake.”

The tender rom-com — which follows a 70-year-old woman named Mahin who decides to revitalize her love life and also appears unveiled in the film — launched from the Berlin Film Festival in 2024 and has since sold widely, giving audiences a glimpse of a rarely seen aspect of Iranian society.

After months of interrogations and continuous travel bans over the past two years — which prevented them from attending Berlin – Moghaddam and Sanaeeha had been charged with making a film labeled as “obscene” and “offending public morality.” They were also accused of “propaganda against the regime” and other charges claiming the film was “unlawfully” screened without the Iranian authorities’ permits for distribution.

The 14-month sentence, which has been suspended for five years,...

Iranian directors Behtash Sanaeeha and Maryam Moghadam have received a 14-month jail sentence as well as $14,000 worth of fines related to their feature My Favourite Cake which world premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2024.

The filmmaking duo and their producer and Gholamreza Mousavi have been in the crosshairs of Iran’s authoritarian Islamic Republic regime since early 2023 over the heartwarming drama about an elderly widow who reconnects with life’s small pleasures in the face of solitude.

Sanaeeha and Moghadam, who is also a Swedish national, were grounded by a travel ban prior to the film’s world premiere in Berlin and the couple have since been subjected to an Islamic Revolutionary Court investigation. In the lead-up to the court hearing in February, they also started receiving death threats.

Paris’ La Clef Revival Comes to New York for Week of Film Screenings; Watch Appreciations from Martin Scorsese and John Carpenter
Image
Wherever you call home, it’s hard to be invested in cinephile culture without a mind towards its health. It was hardly some casual choice when Sean Baker took time during an Oscar-acceptance speech to plea for greater attendance––with each year every purchase at an Anthology, Spectacle, or Maysles feels more and more like an investment in the future, or perhaps a protest vote against our present. And few fight so valiantly as La Clef Revival Collective, a Parisian group who’ve earned praise from Martin Scorsese, Jean-Luc Godard, David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, John Carpenter, Justine Triet, Leos Carax, Adèle Haenel, and Céline Sciamma (the latter of whom sits on their board).

When La Clef, a Parisian theater initially open since 1973, faced severe risk of closure in 2019, the Revival Collective and aforementioned filmmakers joined forces to save the space. They are seeking $400,000 between now and April to fund renovations,...

La Clef Cinema: Organizers Behind Historic Paris Venue Backed By Martin Scorsese & Quentin Tarantino Set New York City Screening And Fundraising Tour
Image
Paris’ La Clef cinema is heading to New York.

Organizers behind the popular venue, one of Paris’ most enduring rep houses, are heading to New York this week to host a series of film screenings at cinemas across the city to connect with fellow cinephiles and raise funds for their ongoing redevelopment project back in Paris.

La Clef has been officially shut since 2019. The cinema was saved from permanent closure last year after Cinéma Revival, a group of local volunteers and longtime patrons of the cinema, purchased the building, which had been put on the market by its previous owner. The campaign to save La Clef was an almost five-year battle and began with a bold community occupation of the building, which grew into an international movement involving film industry figures, lawyers, activists, and government officials.

The group bought the building with €2 million raised through an online fundraising campaign. €400.000 was...

Pedro Almodóvar, Ali Abbasi and More Film Figures Fight Prosecution of Iranian Directors
Image
The international film community is in uproar over the summoning of Iranian filmmakers Maryam Moghadam and Behtash Sanaeeha to court in their native country amid the production and distribution of their 2024 Berlin Film Festival feature My Favourite Cake.

The International Coalition for Filmmakers at Risk (Icfr) has reiterated its unequivocal support for Moghadam and Sanaeeha, currently awaiting the start of their trial with Iran’s Revolutionary Court on Mar. 1.

The charges leveled against them concern the production and distribution of their My Favourite Cake, a movie about a woman in Tehran who rediscovers her desires in a country where women’s rights are heavily restricted.

Burhan Qurbani on His ‘No Beast. So Fierce’: ‘Freedom Is Something That Is Reserved for Them, the White German Society, Not for Us’
Image
In Burhan Qurbani’s “No Beast. So Fierce,” which premiered in Berlinale Special, Shakespeare’s “Richard III” is reimagined in a modern setting as the tale of an Arab gangster queen named Rashida who becomes the boss of the Berlin underworld.

It’s the fifth feature from German-born Qurbani, who is the son of political refugees from Afghanistan and previously made a splash with hard-hitting social dramas such as “We Are Young. We Are Strong” and his adaptation of Alfred Döblin’s classic novel “Berlin Alexanderplatz,” which he set in the African refugee community of present-day Berlin.

The director spoke to Variety about launching “Beast” on the eve of Germany’s politically heated elections and working with Germany-based Syrian actress Kenda Hmeidan, who plays Rashida, and “Succession” star Hiam Abbass, whose character plays Rashida’s bodyguard and is also an assassin.

The film’s main character has been described as a present-day female Arab gangster.

Bye Bye Tiberias (2023)
Documentary Review: Bye Bye Tiberias (2023) by Lina Soualem
Bye Bye Tiberias (2023)
1992 archival footage of Palestinian lake Tiberias opens this feature documentary from Lina Soualem. The images, although mundane, have a very specific function. They link the viewer to the world which is no more. The story of the director’s family serves as a lens through which a tale of war-torn country is told.

Bye Bye Tiberias is screening at Festival International des Cinemas d’Asie de Vesoul

Hiam Abbass, most widely known as a recent “Succession” alumni, moved from Palestine to Paris over 30 years ago to pursue her career in acting. The decision to leave had large repercussions on her life, and alienated her from the town she was raised in. Most importantly, the actress had to practically cut her ties with the rest of her estranged family. In “Bye Bye Tiberias” director Lina Soualem (also Abbass’ daughter) triggers a trip down memory lane by confronting the protagonist with old photograph albums,...

10 Movie Sequels That Took Over 10 Years To Happen & Were Worth The Wait
Image
Sometimes, a movie is so good that it immediately makes the audience hungry for more. Often, studios attempt to capitalize on this desire by churning out sequels as soon as they possibly can, even if it means pushing out a movie sequel with a massive budget. By doing this, they can continue to keep people excited about the franchise, maintaining its status as a lucrative outlet for the company. The downside of this strategy, however, is that the need to rapidly produce these movies can often come with the consequence of having to sacrifice the high level of quality achieved by the original film.

Once in a while, though, a studio makes the bold decision to make audiences wait quite a while before giving them the sequel they have been craving. This is a risky move, as it can result in losing the excitement surrounding the franchise, but it also...

Variety reports that Armstrong will re-team with the show's executive producer Frank Rich for a new original film for HBO. The plot will follow "four friends who convene during a dramatic international financial crisis."

There aren't many details right now other than Armstrong is penning the script, and production will reportedly begin sometime later this year. The studio is checking on actors' schedules for availability, though no names have been announced as of this moment. No release date has been announced either.

Armstrong is primarily known for his work on television, and his biggest show, Succession, ended in 2022 after four seasons. During its time on air, the series won a total of 19 Emmys, including three for best drama series, with several statues awarded to Armstrong for his writing. Image
Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic, has found a new streaming home on Paramount+. So, now's the chance to give the hard sci-fi thriller a rewatch, as it's one of the genre's best films.

Blade Runner 2049 takes place in the universe first created by Scott. The sci-fi thriller follows a law enforcer hunting down androids who have become sentient and gone rogue in a futuristic society. Blade Runner 2049 centers around K (Ryan Gosling), a "replicant" (an android) who’s also a "blade runner" (futuristic bounty hunter). The plot synopsis reads as follows:

Thirty years after the events of Blade Runner, a new Blade Runner, L.A.P.D. Officer "K" unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard, a former L.A.P.D. Blade Runner,...

Kieran Culkin Admits To Pranking Mark Ruffalo With Marijuana in 1999
Image
In 2011, Kieran Culkin and Mark Ruffalo starred in the psychological drama Margaret, and while that film went off without a hitch, their time on stage together was a bit of a different story. The two appeared in the Off-Broadway production of James Lapine's The Moment When back in 1999 when Culkin was just a mischievous 17-year-old, who – as a prank – swapped out Ruffalo's fake marijuana joint for a real one. Now, 26 years later, the Succession star says he'll never try that again.

Speaking with The Guardian, Culkin reflected on the moment, saying that at the time he thought it was a "good prank." Surprisingly enough, Ruffalo took it all in stride, as did a few others who got in on the action to puff-puff-pass the joint around, including veteran stage star Phyllis Newman, who sadly passed away in 2019.

"I was 17 and stupid. I'm like, 'I thought this was a good prank.

“Success is the greatest aphrodisiac”: Brian Cox Didn’t Just Base Logan Roy on Rupert Murdoch, Took His Many Alleged Affairs for ‘Succession’ Too

Brian Cox gave a Golden Globe-winning performance as Logan Roy in the TV show, Succession. Cox based the patriarch of the dysfunctional Roy family on the likes of Rupert Murdoch, the American business magnate and investor. The similarities were uncanny as Logan in the series was the founder of the media and entertainment conglomerate Waystar RoyCo.

When asked about his character’s relationship with women, Cox shared that he believed Logan, like Murdoch, is not averse to having an affair on the show. However, he clarified that Logan didn’t need extramarital relationships to keep his storyline going in Season 2.

FX Reveals the Fate of Jeff Bridges' The Old Man
Image
Two months after the Season 2 finale, the future of The Old Man on FX has been revealed. Unfortunately, it's not good news for fans of the series.

Per Deadline, FX has officially canceled The Old Man after two seasons, so there will not be a third season of the Jeff Bridges-led series. The show meeting its fate comes after wading through some troubled waters with its production for its two seasons. Season 1 began development in 2019 and was forced to shut down with just three episodes left to film because of the pandemic in 2020. Filming was further postponed as Bridges underwent cancer treatment; he announced in 2021 that his cancer was in remission, and production on The Old Man resumed in 2022.

Brian Cox Shares Candid View on Kevin Spacey and Cancel Culture
Image
Brian Cox, the Hollywood legend who rose to prominence again after giving life to the hilarious patriarch Logan Roy in HBO's Succession, has given his opinion about cancel culture, and he used a very curious case to prove his point. That of Kevin Spacey, the actor who fell from grace after allegations of sexual assault appeared everywhere in the late 2010s.

Cox has always had opinions, but after Succession, everything he says appears to stir up controversy. In recent times, he has been quite vocal about many subjects, and now he has spoken about Spacey, a performer who he considers to be "very funny." They both starred in the Disney live-action film Iron Will in 1994, and it appears they haven't lost contact.

Cox spoke to The Hollywood Reporter recently to promote the voice work he did for the new anime show The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,...

Brian Cox Calls Out Hollywood's 'Brian Cox Doubles Down on Criticism of 'Overrated' Hollywood Stars Like Johnny Depp & Steven Seagal
Image
Critically acclaimed actor Brian Cox, who recently starred in HBO's Succession, called out several actors in his 2022 memoir Putting the Rabbit in the Hat. Some of the passages included references to Johnny Depp, Edward Norton, Steven Seagal, and Quentin Tarantino.

In a new interview with The Guardian, Cox admitted he upset several fellow actors over the years. In his memoir, he called Johnny Depp "so overblown, so overrated," which led to him turning down a role in The Pirates of the Caribbean. He also had other notes about fellow celebrities, as he called Steven Seagal, with whom he worked on 1996's The Glimmer Man "as ludicrous in real life as he appears on screen," noted Edward Norton is "a nice lad, but a bit of a pain in the arse because he fancies himself as a writer-director." He called Michael Caton-Jones, who directed him in Rob Roy, a "complete arsehole.

Lina Soualem on Transitioning From Docs to Feature Filmmaking With Drama ‘Alicante’ That Will Star Her Sister Mouna Soualem
Image
French-Palestinian-Algerian filmmaker Lina Soualem, whose documentary “Bye Bye Tiberias,” featuring her mother Hiam Abbas (“Succession”), launched positively from Venice and Toronto, is set to make her feature film debut with “Alicante,” a drama starring her sister Mouna Soualem (“Oussekine”) as a young woman on an existential journey that takes her to Spain.

After exploring her Algerian grandparents’ break-up in the doc “Their Algeria” and delving into how Hiam Abbas and her family were displaced from the city of Tiberias by the 1948 Arab-Israeli war in “Bye Bye Tiberias,” Soualem will now be putting a somewhat lighter tale on screen, albeit one that continues her exploration of “questions of belonging and transmission and exiles between generations” and “finding your place in the world,” as she puts it.

In “Alicante” Mouna Soualem will play Assia, a 32-year-old Franco-Algerian photographer, who has just broken up with her long-time American partner, with whom she had...

The Smartest ‘Succession’ Villain Hated TV Shows Before Brian Cox Led Masterpiece Changed Her Mind: ‘I was almost anti-television’
Image
The HBO drama Succession followed the corporate wars between Brian Cox’s Logan Roy and his three children, who struggled to gain control of their media conglomerate company Waystar RoyCo. The series was widely regarded for its performances, and writing, and also won the Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy for Best Drama Series.

While Cox’s character faced many obstacles in his bid to save his empire, no one was as dangerous as Marcia Roy, his third wife played by Hiam Abbass. The Palestinian actress had been in multiple films such as Blade Runner 2049 and Munich before she joined the series. Abbass mentioned that she was against TV shows before joining Succession.

10 Best TV Shows Like House Of The Dragon While Waiting For Season 3
Image
House of the Dragon expertly blends high fantasy, political intrigue, and familial drama — and the combination of all those things makes it difficult to find similar TV shows. The Game of Thrones spinoff has yet to reach the heights of its predecessor, but it boasts many of the same strengths as the original HBO series. Its balance of personal and political stakes is impressive over the course of its first two seasons, and things promise to get even more tense between the members of House Targaryen in House of the Dragon season 3.

Unfortunately, it could be a while before the next season of House of the Dragon premieres, especially if the show repeats the two-year gap between seasons 1 and 2. This may leave viewers wondering what to watch in the meantime. While there aren't many shows exactly like House of the Dragon, there are some great series that feature similar elements and themes.

10 Fantastic Movies Let Down by Terrible Marketing
Image
Filmmaking is a business, where movies are carefully constructed and meticulously crafted products meant to turn a profit for major studios and independent publishers alike. But a carefully crafted product is only as successful as its marketing and branding initiatives can sell, and sometimes some of the best-crafted movies are brought down by less-than-ideal marketing campaigns.

Bad marketing is the death knell for a feature film, even if the movie is critically acclaimed and beloved by the audiences that did see it. When movies are burdened with bad marketing, even the best can fail.
