Luxuriate in Four New Clips from ‘Call Me by Your Name’ and Soundtrack Details
It’s been a long journey for Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name since its rapturous response at Sundance Film Festival nearly nine months ago. There’s now only one month left until the theatrical release of the year’s finest romance, but first, the gorgeous soundtrack will arrive, and now we have the full tracklist. Set for an early November release, it features two new tracks from Sufjan Stevens (and one reworked one), as well as cuts from The Psychedelic Furs, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and more. We also have four clips from the film, one of which has already enjoyed full memeification.

Before for that, however, there’s a few new details on Guadagnino’s upcoming projects. He recently opened up about a potential sequel to his Armie Hammer- and Timothée Chalamet-led film, and his main trio said they’d be interested. “If I paired the...

‘Marshall’ Review: A Tepid Look at a Mighty Crusader
Thurgood Marshall deserves a miniseries on the scale of John Adams. His story is remarkable and even if Reginald Hudlin’s Marshall had been a great movie, it still wouldn’t be enough to contain the litigator and Supreme Court Justice’s many achievements. As it is, Marshall feels like it’s only skimming the surface of its title character’s legacy, serving at best as an introduction but by no means the robust biopic its towering central figure deserves. If anything, Marshall’s story is reduced down to half the tale and his purpose seems to be as a …...

More 4th of July Escapism: Small-Town Iowa and Declaration of Independence Musicals
Buddy Hackett, Paul Ford, Hermione Gingold, Shirley Jones, Pert Kelton, and Robert Preston in The Music Man (1962)
(See previous post: Fourth of July Movies: Escapism During a Weird Year.) On the evening of the Fourth of July, besides fireworks, fire hazards, and Yankee Doodle Dandy, if you're watching TCM in the U.S. and Canada, there's the following: Peter H. Hunt's 1776 (1972), a largely forgotten film musical based on the Broadway hit with music by Sherman Edwards. William Daniels, who was recently on TCM talking about 1776 and a couple of other movies (A Thousand Clowns, Dodsworth), has one of the key roles as John Adams. Howard Da Silva, blacklisted for over a decade after being named a communist during the House Un-American Committee hearings of the early 1950s (Robert Taylor was one who mentioned him in his testimony), plays Benjamin Franklin. Ken Howard is Thomas Jefferson, a role he would reprise in John Huston's 1976 short Independence. (In the short, Pat Hingle was cast as John Adams; Eli Wallach was Benjamin Franklin.) Warner...

'Boy Meets World's William Daniels Gets Candid About Being a Victim of Child Abuse in New Memoir
William Daniels
Actor William Daniels is opening up about being the victim of child abuse.

The two-time Emmy winner -- best known for playing kindhearted teacher Mr. Feeny on the '90s sitcom Boy Meets World and brilliant surgeon Dr. Mark Craig on the '80s medical drama St. Elsewhere -- writes in his new memoir that he didn't realize he'd suffered from child abuse until he was an adult.

According to the 89-year-old actor, he was forced into becoming a child actor by his mother, who pushed him into auditioning for roles at a very young age, and was made to sing, dance and act alongside his sisters, Jacqueline and Carol, for hours on end without having any say in the matter.

Danielle Fishel, Ben Savage, Will Friedle, and Rider Strong in Boy Meets World (1993)
“Boy Meets World” actor William Daniels has published a new memoir in which he shares that he was abused as a child actor — something he only realized years later. In his book, “There I Go Again: How I Came to Be Mr. Feeny, John Adams, Dr. Craig, Kitt & Many Others,” he discussed how his mother dragged him to auditions at a very young age and forced him to dance, sing and perform on stage. Sometimes, he would work crazy morning hours and on weekends, while children received very little pay. Daniels, now 89, was a child performer during the...

It wasn’t until William Daniels was an adult that he realized he was abused as a child actor.

The Emmy-winning actor, who starred in Boy Meets World, Knight Rider and St. Elsewhere, shares in his new memoir the painful memories of being forced into performing as a child by his mother.

Conan O'Brien offered an optimistic take on the 2016 election Wednesday, praising America's tradition of peaceful elections and the transfer of power while taking a stab at unity with a classic cheap visual gag.

A self-described history buff, O'Brien noted America has had bitter, contentious elections for 200 years, listing Thomas Jefferson versus Aaron Burr, John Adams versus Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln versus Stephen Douglas and, of course, Alien versus Predator.

"This is our thing, and the optimist in me chooses to be happy that we have fair and free elections at all,...

Dennis O’Neil: Strange Tidings
Doctor Strange and I go way back. He was the first superhero Stan Lee asked me to write when I was a fuzzy newbie, just beginning a long stretch of years in the comic book business, working as an editorial assistant at Marvel. Maybe there’s some synchronicity here: I’d fooled around with magic as a kid and here I was writing about a magician. And more: this conjurer lived in Greenwich village, notorious hotbed of art and creativity and nonconformity, all of which were of powerful interest to me.

And now, more than 50 years later, along comes the Doctor Strange movie, and a satisfying afternoon in the multiplex it is, not least because one of my favorite actors hits all his marks. It is also, no surprise here, a box office success, the fourteenth in a row for the Mighty Marvel Movie Manufacturers.

But, for the moment, let...

Forbidden Planet: The Film that Inspired Star Trek Turns 60
While there’s been a lot of attention paid to the fact that this year is the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, not a lot is being been said about a movie that came out 10 years before which inspired the series. In honor of its 60thanniversary, Cinelinx looks at the sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet.

Star Trek is one of the most popular and enduring sci-fi franchises ever made. If it wasn’t for the influential 1956 film Forbidden Planet, we might never have had Star Trek. If you examine Forbidden Planet closely, you’ll see the creative aspects that inspired Gene Roddenberry while he was creating his TV masterpiece, which debuted in 1966. According to ‘Star Trek Fact Check’, Gene Roddenberry once wrote a letter asking “Would it be ethical to get a print of the film and have our people make stills from some of the appropriate frames?”

Forbidden Planet—which...

The Making of America's Musical- 1776: The Story Behind the Story
As America celebrates its 240th Birthday today, let's talk about what is probably one of the greatest musicals ever written, and it only came about 46 years before Hamilton. 1776 dramatizes the story of how John Adams was able to persuade his colleagues to vote for American independence as well as signing the Declaration of Independence. While the musical does dramatize the most important event in American history, the story behind the musical is probably just as interesting.

Elvis & Nixon review – Tricky Dicky meets the King in the Oval Office
Kevin Spacey and Michael Shannon play one of history’s oddest couples in this entertaining account of the day Presley arrived unannounced at the White House

Related: Elvis and Nixon, Reagan and Jacko, Jagger and Blair … when pop stars and politicians collide | Craig Brown

If Oliver Stone and Peter Morgan ever decided to team up for a larky look at the darker conspiratorial currents of pop culture during the Nixon presidency, it might look like this entertaining, lenient reimagining of the most bizarre unofficial summit meeting in Us history, drenched in retrospective irony and postmodern absurdity. This was the encounter of Richard Nixon and Elvis Presley in 1970 in the Oval Office, commemorated with an official handshake photograph. Maybe Stewart Lee could create an opera based on this, like John Adams’s Nixon in China.

The Suspiria Remake Seems to Be Moving Forward with Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson
The remake of Dario Argento’s psychedelic 1977 horror film Suspiria seems to still be moving forward. This film has been in development for years. It started off with David Gordon Green at the helm, and then when he dropped out, a director by the name of Luca Guadagnino stepped in to take his place. He previously talked about the film:

"The film by Dario Argento was a very indicative moment of growing up for me because I saw it when I was 14. I think it changed me forever. I was obsessed [with Argento] through all my adolescence. [My version] is going to be set in Berlin in 1977. It’s going to be about the mother and the concept of motherhood and about the uncompromising force of motherhood. It’s going to be about finding your inner voice – the title is very evocative on these grounds."

The most recent news I’ve seen confirms the...

Frances McDormand in Olive Kitteridge (2014)
Could 'Olive Kitteridge' sweep Emmys like 'Angels in America'?
Frances McDormand in Olive Kitteridge (2014)
Could "Olive Kitteridge" repeat the Emmys success of "Angels in America"? Easier said than done. "Angels" pulled off a typically unthinkable sweep on Emmy night in 2004, taking Best Miniseries, as well as writing, directing and all four acting prizes. Added to its four Creative Arts wins, that brought "Angels" to 11 victories total, at that point tying the record set by "Eleanor and Franklin" (1976) for the most wins for any program in a single year. (That record was later broken by the miniseries "John Adams" in 2008). -Break- Now "Olive Kitteridge" is nominated in all seven categories that "Angels" won during the 2004 telecast, and according to our current predictions, it's the frontrunner to win almost all of them. We give it best odds for Best Limited Series, Movie/Limited Actress (Frances McDormand), Movie/Limited Supporting Actor (Bill Murray), Movie/Limited Writing and Movie/Limit...'...

Game of Thrones (2011)
GoT Recap: Snakes Out for Pain
Game of Thrones (2011)
We knew Oberyn Martell’s daughters were going to be badasses. The much-missed Dornish prince (sniff!) put forth such a deadly sexy combination of swagger and combat skills, it makes sense that his kids inherited both his hotness (and his hot-headedness). In this week’s Game of Thrones, we get to see exactly how badass Martell’s offspring — known as the Sand Snakes — are.

Elsewhere, Melisandre is still hella shady, two of Daenerys’ closest advisors might not be long for their jobs (or their lives), and the High Sparrow now has an exuberant army.

That last one is no cause for worry at all,...

Laura Linney Boards Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2
As bizarre a headline as that is, it’s true – three-time Oscar nominee Laura Linney, best known for her powerhouse parts in films such as Mystic River and TV series like HBO’s John Adams, has become the latest star to board Paramount’s big-budget sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.

The nature of Linney’s role is, at least for now, a closely guarded secret.

Megan Fox and Will Arnett will reprise the roles of reporter April O’Neil and cameraman Vernon Fenwick, while the sequel will also see Arrow actor Stephen Amell, Brian Tee, Tyler Perry and supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio join the cast as the heroic Casey Jones, archvillain the Shredder, scientist Baxter Stockman and an unspecified love interest for Vernon, respectively. As with Linney’s involvement, news of Perry’s casting was met with surprise followed by mild amusement.

Of late, Linney’s filmography has largely included period flicks and prestige dramas,...

Sons of Liberty: Was the Premiere of History's Miniseries Revolutionary?
Sons of Liberty (2015)
A group of unlikely acquaintances unite to take down a common enemy in History’s Revolutionary War drama Sons of Liberty, and — to paraphrase a famous quotation from the era — it’s a time that tries even the most patient TV viewer’s soul.

The opening installment of the cable channel’s scripted miniseries, which premiered Sunday and continues through Tuesday, covers one of the most exciting epochs in American history: the years right before the colonies turned against British rule and decided to go to war for independence.

It was a time of great unrest, violence and intrigue… so...

Sons of Liberty (2015)
Sons of Liberty Is Pretty Good, In Between the Action Scenes
Sons of Liberty (2015)
The ad campaign for Sons of Liberty makes it look like The Avengers in powered wigs. Jason O'Mara is… George Washington! Michael Raymond-James is… Paul Revere! Dean Norris is… Ben Franklin! They face the viewer, heads slightly inclined, glowering joyously: a secret society of early American heroes, fanning out across the Colonies, taking the fight to the Crown. At first this three-part History Channel series, which debuts tonight, seems like it'll live up to its ad campaign, to its detriment, and dumb history down into spectacle and action for action's sake. It gets better and slightly deeper as it goes along, but never to such an extent that you wouldn't rather be re-watching HBO's John Adams, or maybe 1776. In the prologue, set in 1765, future founding patriot Sam Adams (Ben Barnes) escapes tax assessors who're irked that he's letting his pals take a payment raincheck and leads them on a foot...
