At the panel ‘Taking the Leap: Storytelling from India, by India, for the World’, held at Waves, some of the industry’s biggest filmmakers indulged in a conversation on creating Indian content that resonates with global audiences. The conversation also delved into how streaming is continuing to change content creation in India.

“With streaming services like Prime Video, filmmakers now have creative freedom and can think beyond just that two hours in a movie theater,” said Vikramaditya Motwane, who created and directed the series Jubilee.

Shah Rukh Khan, Ted Sarandos, Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Rajinikanth are set to headline the inaugural Waves (World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit) 2025, as India aims to position itself at the epicenter of global storytelling and screen innovation.

The summit will be inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. U.K. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy will deliver a keynote titled “Creative Bridges: Unlocking Power of Cultural & Digital Partnerships Between U.K. & India.”

Sarandos will participate in a fireside chat titled “Streaming the New India: Culture, Connectivity & Creative Capital.”

The Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association (Imppa) introduced a novel networking space at this year’s International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa – a three-deck luxury yacht that served as a floating venue for industry events and meetings.

The vessel, dubbed the Imppa Yacht, hosted over 1,000 visitors during the four-day Film Bazaar segment of Iffi, according to Yusuf Shaikh, Imppa’s international committee head and CEO of Janta Cinema. More than 30 producers utilized the space for launches, press conferences and networking events.

“If you explained the incentives, people would be flocking [to Spain] to produce,” said leading Indian producer Nikkhil Advani. He cited similar examples including Estonia and the Middle East where Indian films have been made with subsidies and location incentives. “Yash Raj Films has even gone there and used Spain as a location, not for the incentives,” he added.

Menghani traced how the Indian streaming space has transformed since Prime Video’s 2016 launch, identifying Covid-19 as a key inflection point. “The entertainment palette of consumers completely changed in this country. Sixty percent of our consumers today watch content in four or more languages,” Menghani said, noting that over half of content consumed on the service comes from outside viewers’ primary language.

Nikkhil Advani’ s Vedaa is arguably his best work to date. It is hard-edged and steely, what with John Abraham playing a rustic mumbling Rambo on a revenge trail that leaves many maimed and killed.

By the end of this breathless romp into the ruins, which ends in the plundered corridors of a courthouse(order order indeed!) , we are left with a feeling of rage.

Vedaa will leave you angry at the end, angry that such injustice still prevails in our land. That Dalits are disallowed their basic rights by kangaroo courts run by a mofussil mafia. In the film, Abhishek Banerjee and his screen uncle Ashish Vidyarthi strut around as a law unto themselves. Those who fail to comply are given a “suitable” punishment.

All this may seem like outdated theatrics to those who live far away from rural (read: real) India. But the heartland still beats to the rhythm of brutal injustice.
