Independence Day (1996)
Independence Day for U.S. Means the Same for Qatar Today
Independence Day (1996)
Two very independent filmsmakers in Doha, Elia Suleiman and James Schamus are friends from way back whenToday, July 4, 2017, as we in the U.S. celebrate our independence from the British monarch, the foreign minister of Germany praised Qatar’s “restraint” in responding to a blockade imposed by Arab states amid the worst regional diplomatic crisis in years. “There are boundaries that you should not cross, that the sovereignty of each of country and the respect of this national sovereignty has to be there,” Sigmar Gabriel told reporters in the Qatari capital, Doha, after a meeting with his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani today. (Aljazeera).

The Republican Party of the United States, as represented by their chosen leader Trump, lent enthusiastic support to Saudi Arabia, backing its move, made along with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt, to cut off Qatari airspace, seal its land and sea borders and suspend diplomatic ties.

Michael Keaton, Liev Schreiber, Brian d'Arcy James, Mark Ruffalo, and Rachel McAdams in Spotlight (2015)
Spotlight, Truth and Concussion are also among the festival’s programme.

Lenny Abrahamson’s Oscar-contender Room will open the 12th Dubai International Film Festival (Diff) this year, which will run December 9-16.

The film, an adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s novel, tells the story of a young mother and her 5-year-old son who are held captive in a small room. Lead actress Brie Larson has already received nominations at the Gotham Awards and yesterday’s Independent Spirits for her performance, and is a favourite for the Academy Awards next year.

The festival will be closed by Adam McKay’s The Big Short, which has an ensemble cast featuring Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Christian Bale and Brad Pitt, and recently premiered at Los Angeles’ AFI Fest (Nov 5-12).

Other films screening include: Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight; James Vanderbilt’s Truth; Peter Landesman’s Concussion; Nicholas Hytner’s The Lady In The Van; and Hany Abu-Assad’s The Idol...

'Real Housewives of New Jersey' Season 5 Recap, as Told Through GIFs
The dramatic reality TV event we've been waiting for will soon arrive: the sixth season of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" premieres on Bravo this Sunday, July 13. It appears to be quite the doozy -- full of everything from legal issues to identical twins to intense family cat fights and gossip. Plus, the return of original housewife, Dina Manzo.

Season 5 was all sorts of crazy, so if you're not caught up on the show you should probably do so now. But first we'll provide a little help outlining the highlights of the season for you. Through gifs, of course!

-One thing that did not let up last season: The tension insane fighting between the Giudices and the Gorgas. Teresa and her brother Joe continued to butt heads. Even Caroline Manzo tried to get involve in their troubled relationship. And Melissa was so fed up with the drama that she...

Cabrera or Trout – Just Who Is The Al Mvp?
With just one week remaining in the regular season and with most of the post-season berths already occupied, the attention of Mlb fans around the world has turned to the thorny issue of individual awards – which player deserves to win what. Every year there seems to be a huge amount of debate about the Mvp (Most Valuable Player) winners from both leagues, and this year’s American League Mvp race is proving to be no different. With respect to Edwin Encarnacion of the Toronto Blue Jays and second baseman Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees (who have both had fantastic seasons) it does appear that the Al Mvp crown for 2012 is a straight shoot-out between two men – Miguel Cabrera and the wonderfully named Mike Trout.

It’s a wonderful name for a wonderful player. After a brief stint in the Majors last year, Trout was called up to the...

2011: A Year in Review Part I
2011 was one of the best years for film in recent years. There are about 25 films that could have made my top ten list and each film in my top 5 could be my number one. I saw about 100 films this year and I still wish I could have seen more. I feel very comfortable with my top ten and I feel like it was a good representative of the year in film. However I do feel that people looking at this article should go over to Sound On Sight and see all the staff’s individual lists, as well as the honorable mentions that just missed my list. You will find a great collection of films on those lists.

1. Martha Marcy May Marlene

Directed by Sean Durkin

I saw Sean Durkin’s directorial debut in August and knew as soon as the last frame came up that this was the best picture of the year.
