Keratyna Now Streaming On Amazon Prime

One of the most quietly strange entries from last year’s Panic Fest is now streamable. Keratyna, written and directed by Miguel Azurmendi, is a Spanish-language thriller blending dark comedy, techno-paranoia, and social critique.

The film stars Fernando Ramallo as “The Rat,” a balding, middle-aged conspiracy vlogger who still lives with his mother (Maiken Beitia). Though abrasive on the surface, Rat is steeped in self-loathing and existential confusion. His YouTube channel feeds off the paranoia of global manipulation, and yet, when he witnesses a crime outside his window, he freezes. This is no straightforward thriller as Azurmendi channels everything from Rear Window and The Conversation to They Live and Vertigo, reimagined for the age of QAnon and algorithmic loneliness.

From its opening quote, lifted from a possibly invented David Icke text,...

Spain’s Álex Montoya Talks Málaga Competition Title ‘La Casa’: Adapted From Paco Roca’s Eisner-Winning Graphic Novel
Image
A myriad of sentiments converge when estranged siblings meet to unpack the weight of their father’s recent death in Spain’s Álex Montoya’s third feature “La Casa,” adapted from the Eisner-winning graphic novel by Paco Roca and sold by Latido Films.

The film, which bowed last night, figures in the official competition selection at this year’s Málaga Film Festival, his project “Lucas” having previously swept the fest’s Zonazine sidebar in 2020 – snagging best film, actor (Jorge Motos) and Audience Award plaudits.

Written by Montoya and Joana M. Ortueta, the project serves as a bittersweet rumination on regret, duty and the ties that bind us, proving a reflective journey through collective consciousness that’s held to task as the three work to rekindle a semblance of affection while sifting through hefty and lingering recollections.

“I’ve been a comic reader for as long as I can remember and,...

‘Tú no eres especial’ Producer Puy Oria on Shooting the First Netflix Original Series Filmed in Navarre
Image
Filming on Netflix teen series “Tú no eres especial” (“You’re Nothing Special”) kicked-off July 8, becoming the streaming giant’s first TV series entirely filmed in Spain’s northern region of Navarre.

The series marks a further step in Netflix’s bet on diversifying its shooting destinations in the country.

“Tú no eres especial” is produced by Oria Audiovisual, the indie company launched by Navarre-born producer Puy Oria, co-founder with filmmaker Montxo Armendáriz of Oria Films, whose credits take in features such as “Silencio Roto” (2001), “Obaba” (2005), “De tu ventana a la mía” (2011) and “No tengas miedo” (2011), mainly filmed in the region.

“Valeria’s” Inma Torrente directs the new six-episode series, created by Estibaliz Burgaleta, “a Skam Spain” script coordinator, and written by Burgaleta, Alberto Grondona (“Las chicas del cable”) and Sergio Granda (“Skam Spain”).

The series follows teenager Amaia, who is forced to move from her comfortable surroundings in the...

Grimmfest 2020: ‘Ropes’ Review
Image
Stars: Paula del Río, Miguel Ángel Jenner, Jordi Aguilar, Ana Terrasa, Irene Terrasa | Written by Yako Blesa, José Luis Montesinos | Directed by José Luis Montesinos

There has been a handful of horror movies with paraplegic characters featuring in main roles. From Franklin in the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, to Marty in the Stephen King story Silver Bullet, to the more recent Nica in 2013’s Curse of Chucky. The use of these characters has been mixed but in Jose Luis Montesinos’ feature film debut Ropes he puts the paraplegic character front and centre, in a new and interesting way.

We see Elena after a recent car crash which has left her in a wheelchair and struggling with life on many levels. Be it the car crash itself, the loss that occurred from it, her relationship with her father since or how she is coping with being in a wheelchair. All...
