The friendships on New Girl are just as important to the series as the romantic relationships. Ralph Ahn, the actor behind New Girl‘s beloved character Tran has died at age 95.

On Sunday, the president of the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles shared the news of his passing on Facebook. “I am deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of the late Ralph Ahn,” he wrote in Korean, calling him “the greatest spiritual leader of our time.” (Ahn’s father was Dosan Ahn Chang-ho, an activist for Korean independence, who led the settlement of Korean people in the U.S. in the early 1900s.

Ralph Ahn, a character actor best known as recurring fan-favorite Tran on "New Girl," has died at 95. News of his passing came via the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles, honoring Ahn as a leader in the community. Ahn was the youngest child and only living descendant of Korean independence activist Dosan Ahn Chang-ho. In addition to his six decades of acting, Ralph Ahn helped to keep the legacy of his father alive for future generations. No cause of death was revealed. Ralph Ahn, who recurred as Nick’s mostly silent friend on Fox’s New Girl and had credits dozens of credits spanning more than 65 years, has died. He was 95. Korean American Federation of Los Angeles reported his February 26 death but did not provide details.

In his signature role, Ahn played Tran on the Zooey Deschanel-led Fox sitcom New Girl, appearing in seven episodes spanning its 2011-18 run. He was a mostly smiling and nodding grandfather figure to co-lead Nick (Jake Johnson) and spoke only two lines of dialogue — one in Tran’s first appearance and one in his last.

Girl's actress Greta Lee is set to recur on New Girl, EW has confirmed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lee will play Kai, the daughter of Tran (Ralph Ahn), a mute friend of Nick (Jake Johnson). Lee will begin her arc on the Thanksgiving episode as Nick takes a romantic interest in Kai.
