Aaron Pierre Reveals the DC Series That Introduced Him to Green Lantern
Image
Having already commanded the screen in this year’s hit Netflix movie Rebel Ridge, Aaron Pierre will look to do the same as John Stewart in Lanterns, the new Dcu series that James Gunn says is slated to release at some point in 2026. Before we get there, though, Pierre recently shared how he was introduced to Stewart in the first place, and it’s all thanks to a beloved animated series that’s still held up as the gold standard of superhero shows.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly about his upcoming role in Lanterns, of which he said he "can't wait to get to work" on, the 30-year-old English actor revealed that he was just a kid when he first met Green Lantern, thanks to a short-lived Cartoon Network series that only lasted 39 episodes. Perhaps it’s one you’ve heard of?

I think Justice League Unlimited might have been one...

Rebel Ridge's Secret CGI Explained by VFX Artist
Image
While you might not think it, given the movie's slow-burning plot, and hand-to-hand fight scenes, Rebel Ridge features well over 500 VFX shots which were hidden in plain sight. The new movie, directed and written by Jeremy Saulnier and starring Aaron Pierre, has been a smash hit for Netflix, boasting a strong 96% Rotten Tomatoes score and rushing to the top of the streamer's Top 10 chart. As the tension draws to a head, Terry Richmond (Pierre) unleashes brutal vengeance on the corrupt police officers who inadvertently caused his brother's death. The scene is filled with brutal fight choreography and, far more surprisingly, a lot of visual effects.

Speaking to Art of VFX, Rebel Ridge's VFX artist, Chris Connolly, discussed the process of implementing the movie's secret VFX. Of course, no sharknadoes or Scorpion Kings appear in the finale, but CGI was used to enhance the on-screen violence. The smoke grenades Terry launches at the police,...

Rebel Ridge Director Talks About His Next Film
Image
Jeremy Saulnier, the director responsible for Netflix's hit action thriller Rebel Ridge, has said that he's already working on his next film. Unfortunately, for those digging his latest feature, he isn't working on a sequel to Rebel Ridge, or something remotely touching on the same genre. Apparently, he has decided to go back to his less "sober" roots.

The director appeared on The Playlist podcast, where he expanded on the screenplay he's currently writing. Saulnier has decided to return to the tone of previous projects like Green Room and his first feature, Murder Party, and take a more fun approach to his unique storytelling style. Per Saulnier's statement:

"Im currently writing something thats a little more in the Green Room universe. Because with Rebel Ridge, I was exploring a new side. I was just tired of everything I do being oppressive. But Ive kinda gone back. It has to...

The production, which has been put on temporary hold, got underway on the 5th May in Louisiana, but the departure of one of its lead actors has thrown the movie into chaos.

John Boyega at an event for Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
John Boyega Exits Netflix Movie ‘Rebel Ridge’ Mid-Shoot, Family Reasons Cited
John Boyega at an event for Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Exclusive: John Boyega has exited Netflix movie Rebel Ridge mid-shoot with “family reasons” cited by the streamer as cause for the abrupt departure.

The production is currently paused but we understand Netflix is working hard to find a replacement for the Star Wars actor and someone is likely to be drafted in in the next few days. Filming began on May 3rd in Louisiana.

A Netflix spokesperson told us: “Rebel Ridge is pausing temporarily as we look to re-cast John Boyega who needed to leave the project for family reasons. We remain committed to Jeremy Saulnier’s extraordinary film and look forward to resuming production. We look forward to continuing our partnership with John Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions, in addition to our upcoming film They Cloned Tyrone in which he also stars.”

This is an unusual turn. Lead actors seldom exit projects mid-shoot. We wish Boyega well with whatever he is dealing with.

American Zombie, Oh My!
I have a question for you, what makes a movie a “Cult Classic”? Well, there is a movie out there that classifies that distinction for you; and that movie is “American Zombie”, it stars Austin Basis (Boxboarders!, Hazard), Roger Ainslie (Decaf), Alice Amter (The Good Girl, Bad Boy, A Man Apart), Kaci Brown (Public Interest, Whispering Waves) and Al Vincente (My Brother Jack, Tangled, Star Maps, Irish Twins).

The plot of this movie is so simple, but yet so realistic. This movie documents the daily lives of a small community of the living deceased who make their home in Los Angeles. Yes that’s right, it shows actual zombies that are alive today and are in our community. It’s a fictitious documentary that makes you ask the question, are there really zombies living among us? I know it sounds really crazy, but let me tell you, it really does make you ask that question.
