Michael Alaimo, a theater and film actor known for his roles in “Space Jam” and the Oscar-nominated “The China Syndrome,” died Friday, May 2, in Burbank, Calif. He was 86.

Alaimo’s death was confirmed to Variety by Alaimo’s daughter, longtime TV PR and communications executive Gabriella Alaimo Thomas. While a cause of death was not disclosed, an official statement said that he “passed away peacefully.”

Maggie Q is officially set to star in the “Bosch” spinoff centered on cold case detective Renée Ballard.

Q will make her first appearance as the character in the Season 3 finale of “Bosch: Legacy,” the first look at which can be seen above and below.

Jet Wilkinson is set to direct the Season 3 finale of “Bosch: Legacy,” along with the first two episodes of the untitled Renee Ballard series for Prime Video.

Q is known for her starring roles as F.B.I Agent Hannah Wells on ABC and Netflix’s drama “Designated Survivor” and the title role of the CW action series “Nikita.” She was most recently seen in the Skydance and Apple TV+ action comedy “The Family Plan” with Mark Wahlberg. Her other film credits include “The Protégé,” “The Divergent Series,” “Live Free Or Die Hard” and “Mission Impossible III.”

Maggie Q has been cast as the lead for an upcoming Bosch spinoff. First premiering in 2014, Bosch is a Prime Video police procedural series that follows the titular character, Harry Bosch, an LAPD homicide detective who is doggedly investigating the death of a 13-year-old victim while also standing trial after murdering a serial killer. Since its debut about 10 years ago, the show has produced one ongoing spinoff titled Bosch:Legacy.

Now, according to Deadline, Mission: Impossible alum Maggie Q has now been cast as Renée Ballard for an upcoming spinoff that centers around the LAPD’s Cold Case Division.

The untitled series follows Detective Renée Ballard (Q), who is tasked with running the LAPD’s new cold case division—a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest case load in the city. Ballard approaches these frozen-in-time cases with empathy and determination. When she uncovers a larger conspiracy during her investigations, she’ll lean on the assistance of her retired ally, Harry Bosch (Welliver), to navigate the dangers that threaten both her unit and her life.

Connelly, Michael Alaimo, and Kendall Sherwood executive produce. Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate executive produce for Fabel Entertainment, with Jasmine Russ as co-executive producer.

Amazon’s Prime Video has placed a series order for a second spinoff of the crime drama. The untitled series will focus on Renée Ballard, an LAPD detective who’s a major character in several novels from author Michael Connelly, the creator of the Harry Bosch character and an executive producer on both Prime Video’s Bosch and its Freevee spinoff/sequel, Bosch: Legacy.

The pickup comes a week after Bosch: Legacy concluded its second season on Freevee.

The newly greenlighted series is one of two projects inspired by the work of bestselling author Michael Connelly that has been in the works at Amazon MGM Studios since February. The other, the Untitled J. Edgar project, remains in development. It follows Harry Bosch’s former partner, Detective Jerry Edgar, who is tapped for an undercover FBI mission in Little Haiti, Miami.

The Untitled Renée Ballard project is centered around a character that has not appeared on the two Bosch series to date. It follows Detective Renée Ballard, who is tasked with running the LAPD’s new cold case division—a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest case load in the city. Mike Lawrence, who tag-teamed with Nick Thune as host for the night, noted that he had to show more identification when registering to get his SXSW conference badge than he would have to buy a gun.

“In Texas it’s harder to get a festival badge than to get a gun,” Lawrence said. “Go to a gun store and tell them ‘I hate Jews,’ you get a gun. Go to registration and say ‘I’m an artist.

Currently untitled, the two series in development at Amazon are based on characters created by Michael Connelly in his series of Henry Bosch detective novels. One will focus on Jerry Edgar, a LAPD detective and Bosch’s former partner. Jamie Hector, best known for “The Wire,” played the character in all seven seasons of the original “Bosch” series.
