Subhash K Jha celebrates 19 Years of Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, which starred Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Kirron Kher and Amitabh Bachchan in a new installment of This Day That Year.
Sometimes you hold a film close to your heart not because the characters embrace you, but for the opposite reason. The four protagonists who colonize Karan Johar quadrangular marital romance are so distanced from their spouses and their dormant desires, you wonder why they got married in the second place!
…Or why any two people decide to opt for what many would say is an obsolete institution in the first place!!
Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna (Kank) is indeed a definite sign of Karan Johar maturation as an artiste and a filmmaker. This is a film that derives its inspiration energy from Karan’s favourite filmmaker Yash Chopra’s interesting but abortive Silsila.

Subhash K Jha looks back at Madaari, and we hear from actor extraordinaire, Irrfan Khan, about the social drama that released in 2016 in a other fabulous installment of This Day That Year.
Nishikant Kamat’s Madaari, which completes nine years on July 22, is not the first film that raises the burning issue of corruption by espousing vigilantism. But Madaari moves you to tears. I had to watch it twice on two successive days to absorb the immensity of Nishikant Kamat’s treatise that – and I quote from the film’s stunning climax—corruption is not part of our political system, our political system exists for corruption.
There. It’s out in the open. The terrible, frightening truism that has manoeuvered apna mahaan Bharat into a mahaan mess. With brilliant impunity, Madaari builds a case for self-justice when all systems collapse and you’ve nowhere to go but to your conscience...

Anand Bakshi remains the most successful lyricist of Hindi cinema. He came to Hindi cinema in 1956 but found real success as a lyricist in 1965 with Jab Jab Phool Khile in which every song composed by Kalyanji-Anandji from ‘Yeh samaa samaa hai yeh pyar ka’ to ‘Pardesiyon se na aankhiya milana’ was a superhit.
It was composer Kalyanji-Anandji who introduced Bakshi to Lata Mangeshkar. She remembered him as a poet of many talents who composed many superhit songs credited to professional composers. When I had asked Lataji to name some of these songs ghost-composed by Anand Bakhi, she demurred. “When Bakshi Saab never spoke about the songs he had ghost-composed, why should I?”
Anand Bakshi had a storehouse of Punjabi numbers from his childhood. Many of the superhit Punjabi-styled songs he wrote were secretly composed by him. He had a vast knowledge of music and songs. In fact, he was keen...

Subhash K Jha looks back on 2011’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Zoya Akhtar directed film that featured Farhan Akhtar, Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin and Katrina Kaif, in this new edition of his fabulous series This Day That Year.
Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara (Znmd) is an exhilarating journey, an inspiring experience, a thought rather than a plot that glides with stunning smoothness and celerity. It has no real beginning or end. Just a series of handsomely and cleverly packaged episodes that are held together by the wisdom of a storyteller who doesn’t try to bully us into being attentive. The sheer inner and outer beauty of the film is enough incentive to keep us engaged till the final marriage before the end credits.

Looking back at Love Story 2050, Subhash K Jha turns the focus on Harman Baweja’s debut film that also featured Priyanka Chopra in a double role and Boman Irani that released in 2008.
Producer-director Harry Baweja made Love Story 2050 as a showcase for his son’s aptitudes. To that extent, the film works wonderfully, creating repeated opportunities for the debutant to shine. The script – sprawling across two time phases and three hours of playing time – is a simple love story of two very good looking people coming together in the svelte, sweltering, simmering climes of Sydney, moving apart and then going into a futuristic mode without alienating themselves from the romantic genre that this uniquely-designed film inhabits.
Harry Baweja happily avoids the pitfalls of pedestrianism even when the boy-meets-girl plot gets into a trite and repeatedly-tested mode. The protagonists share a precious, fragile and tender chemistry. A butterfly perches itself on...

Subhash K Jha turne the focus on one of the classic voices of Hindi music films, both as composer and notably a singer, Rd Burman.
Music was a gift bequeathed to Rahul Dev Burman by his father, Sachin Dev Burman. If Burman Dada immortalised himself with his two manjhi songs — ‘O re manjhi’ (Bandini) and ‘Sun mere bandhu re’ (Sujata) — Burman Baba belted out ‘O manjhi teri naiyya se chhoota kinara’ in that long-forgotten river-bank(rupt) bilingual Aar Paar directed by Shakti Samanta. This timeless manjhi song proved that Papa and Burman Jr were sailing in the same boat. Sadly, by the time Rd’s boat sailed into the 1980s, it developed a leak. If the song hadn’t gone unnoticed, Rd would surely have sung more such reflective quasi-philosophical songs.
Doubtless, the distinctive voice of R.D. Burman was capable of conveying the emotional of a lyric as well, if...

Noted composer and lyricist, Javed Akhtar, speaks with Subhash K Jha about Shubhanshu Shukla taking his composition ‘Yun Hi Chala Chal Rahi’ from Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades to Outer Space.
Javed Saab, your song ‘Yun hi chala chal rahi’ has gone to space?
What can I say? I am deeply moved. I still remember the recording in the voices of Udit Narayan, Kailash Kher. At that time when this song was recorded, even then the reaction of the people was very positive and everyone was like koi Ganga nahaye barson mein all these lines were loved. People liked it a lot.
Your songs of nationalism and desh bhakti have so much theharo in them, no flag-waving, no hysteria?
I think there is a section of my mind which is very committed to nationalism. When I was a child, the tricolour used to be hoisted at our house on 15th August and 26th January,...

Mumbai glittered on Thursday evening as Sitaare Zameen Par – Aamir Khan’s latest film – hosted its grand premiere, drawing an extraordinary lineup of Indian cinema’s biggest stars. The much-anticipated screening, held on 19 June ahead of the film’s global release, turned into an unforgettable night of love, laughter, and cinematic pride.
In a rare sight, Indian film icons Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan both attended, delighting fans and photographers alike. A lighthearted moment between superstars Salman and Aamir quickly went viral: Salman quipped to the paparazzi that Sitaare Zameen Par was first offered to him before Aamir decided to take on the lead role himself.
Shah Rukh Khan, meanwhile, was seen warmly greeting the film’s debutant actors. Dressed in a casual white tee, hoodie, and beanie, he posed for photographs and offered encouragement. His attendance followed the release of a behind-the-scenes video, which revealed a surprise visit to the film’s set.

Subhash K Jha looks back at 21 Years Of Farhan Akhtar’s Lakshya, which starred Hrithik Roshan.
Here’s a rare, refreshing, pathbreaking film which is as noble in intent as it is in treatment. Intensely individualistic and pioneering in its fusion of a social conscience with fiction, Lakshya takes us to Kargil …slowly and deliberately. The pacing of the narration is so uniquely unhurried, you wonder if Farhan Akhtar is out on a sublime stroll through a picaresque highway where, like his aimless protagonist Karan, he can encounter anything at any point.
But you soon realize nothing is by chance in this film about finding one’s metier in life. Lakshya takes us through one man’s journey into finding a purpose in life. In doing so, the narration effortlessly finds its own centre. There are no full stops in the seamless narration. And yet the punctuation marks, like Hrithik’s subtly shaded,...

Every frame of Thug Life, director Mani Ratnam and actor Kamal Hassan’s sophomore collaboration after Nayakan, has a story to tell. And I don’t mean that in any divisive, show-offy, art way. While we stare wondrously at what cinematographer Ravi Chandran has done to every frame we also get a drift of the individual artwork that comes together finally to give us a gangster epic on a par with Kamal-Mani’s much-revered Nayakan.
Yes, Thug Life is That good! The writing is sharp (most of the time), and the way Mani Ratnam sneaks in humour in dramatic constructs is sheer genius. Reading reviewers’ comments on the familiar ground walked by Mani Ratnam, I am reminded of what my friend Javed Akhtar said about film lyrics. “Bhai, gaane toh sab ek jaise hote hai, pyar judaai, ehsaas, milan… It is how you use words. That’s where the poetry lies.

Salman Khan On Salim Javed’s Split ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
The iconic partnership of Salim-Javed, which gave Indian cinema blockbuster movies like Sholay, Zanjeer, Deewar, Don, and many others, broke up in 1982. This moment changed the landscape of Hindi cinema, as Javed Akhtar went on to work as a lyricist for Hindi songs, while Salim Khan worked as a solo screenwriter for a few films till 1996, after which he stopped working altogether.. The duo never got back to work on any other movie.
Javed Akhtar initiated the decision to split, but Salim Khan accepted it maturely without causing any friction in their relationship. However, a heartbreak was inevitable for Salim Khan, and it was Salman Khan, who was a child then, and he saw it through his own eyes.

Prakash Mehra Once Recalled How Amitabh Bachchan Was Scared With Zanjeer’s Initial Reaction! (Photo Credit –YouTube)
Amitabh Bachchan is currently the ‘Shehenshah’ of Indian Cinema but once upon a time, he was just a newcomer, trying to figure out a way to survive in the industry and waiting for that one film which would be appreciated and fare well at the box office. At the time when all of his films tanked at the box office, a man came to his rescue – Prakash Mehra!
The filmmaker changed Big B’s life by making him the Angry Young Man of Indian Cinema by offering him Zanjeer, a film written by Salim Javed and rejected by Dharmendra, Dev Anand, and others.
It was on Pran and Salim Javed’s insistence that Prakash Mehra cast Amitabh Bachchan after reviewing his work in Bombay To Goa. The rest, as they say, is history.

Rajesh Roshan’s music in Mahesh Bhatt’s Papa Kehte Hain was far more successful than the film.
In 2018, Amal Malik put out a remix version of composer Rajesh Roshan and poet Javed Akhtar’s 1996 hit ‘Ghar se nikalte hi kuch der chalte hi raste mein hai uska ghar’. The beautiful love song rendered originally by Udit Narayan was featured in the film Papa Kehte Hain. Shockingly there was no mention of composer Rajesh Roshan in the music video which credited the composition as “Music Composed & Reprised by Amaal Malik”
Even more shocking was the fact that Javed Akhtar’s lucid poetic lyrics were completely changed and credited to one Kunaal Vermaa. Disgusted and angry Javed Akhtar had taken legal action against his desecrated song.
Said Javed Saab, “This has to stop. And I’ve taken the legal recourse. I sent legal notices to the people responsible for doing this...

Subhash K Jha takes a look back at Honey Irani’s 2003 Armaan which starred Preity Zinta, Anil Kapoor, Gracy Singh, Randhir Kapoor, and the Amitabh Bachchan. The feature not only revisits the terrific medical drama, but it also shares highlights from an interview he conducted with Amitabh Bachchan.
The aged but agile doctor swoops up the dying child in his arms and runs through the jungle to the hospital. In the process, he loses his own life. The most memorable moment in Honey Irani’s noble but finally unsuccessful large-screen soap opera reminds you of Dilip Kumar trying to stop vehicles on the road to take his dying wife to the hospital in Yash Chopra’s Mashaal.
Coincidentally, Mashaal too starred Anil Kapoor. As Dr Aakash Sinha, Kapoor puts in an earnest performance. His sequences with his father, played with sophisticated wisdom by the inimitable Amitabh Bachchan, are the muted highlights of the film.

Celebrating Madhuri Dixit’s birthday, Subhash K Jha lists her most celebrated songs and her brilliant dances.
1. ‘Didi tera devar deewana’ (Hum…Aapke Hain Koun): Everything in this song-and-dance, from Madhuri’s purple saree to her dance movements (Jay Borade for a change instead of the ubiquitous Saroj Khan) became iconic. Madhuri once told me, “I think Didi tera devar was the single-most popular number of my career. A lot of the credit for it goes to Latabai. When she sang for an actress, the emotions flew organically. I just had to follow her voice”
2. ‘Ho Ramji tere lakhan ne bada dukh dina’ (Ram Lakhan): This was an important melodic overture in Ms Madhuri’s musical journey. It was Subhash Ghai and , more importantly, it was the indomitable Lataji in one of her last significant collaborations with Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Ghai wanted an atypical Mujra for Madhuri where the rhythm...

Was The Iconic Delivery Scene From Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots Meant For Another Movie? ( Photo Credit – Facebook )
Rajkumar Hirani is regarded as one of the best filmmakers in India. His 2009 comedy drama movie 3 Idiots is considered by many cinephiles as among the most entertaining films ever made, and rightly so. The movie featured perfectionist actor Aamir Khan, R. When Dharmendra Took A Cryptic Dig At Javed Akhtar (Photo Credit – Wikipedia/Instagram)
Amitabh Bachchan starrer Zanjeer is a breakthrough film in the senior actor’s career. It was released in 1973 and is credited for launching Bachchan’s image as the “Angry Young Man” of Indian cinema, a persona that defined much of his career in the 1970s and ’80s. But did you know that part was actually written for Dharmendra? It was written by the incredible duo- Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar.
Javed once revealed that the Dharam Veer actor refused to take on the role for unknown reasons. This revelation reportedly did not board well with Apne star as he seemed to have taken a cryptic jibe at Akhtar after this report came out. Zanjeer is iconic for several reasons; for example, it marked the end of the romantic hero era and the rise of the action-oriented, morally conflicted protagonist.

Full of emotion, power, soul, energy with perfect lyric delivery and pitch, Hariharan is one of the most celebrated singers in the Indian music film and Ghazal world.
1. ‘Tum gaye sabb gaya’ (Maachis):
This heartstopping meditative melody on lost love comes in two surreal packages, one by Lataji and the other by Hariji. No need to say Lataji’s interpretation of Gulzar’s pained poetry is peerless. But hang on! Hariharan also gives the lyrics a life of their own. Every word is enunciated in a wounded baritone; every accusation against destiny is like a whiplash.
2. ‘Raaton Ko Maange Hai Sajan Se’ (Ramnagari):
Hariharan sang masterpieces for the underrated genius of a composer Jaidev in Gaman and this film. This frisky, flirtatious folk song from an Amol Palekar film which no one has seen (not even probably the actor himself) is exceptional for tapping a lighter folksy side of Hariharan’s amazing talent.

In an interview with comedian Sapan Verma’s YouTube channel, Javed openly talked about the reason for declining to work in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and later regretting it. I avoid films that, in any way, had lyrics I found absurd or vulgar. This principle led me to turn down a very successful film— Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. I had written the first song for it, but when Karan decided on the title,...
