Desert Dawn Movie Ending Explained And Recap: Who Is The Real Drug Lord?
Image
I appreciate films that are exactly what they promise in the synopsis, nothing more, nothing less. Desert Dawn is something that fits that category. A laid-back western about a big guy who returns to his hometown as the new sheriff and takes on a drug cartel—simple, straight, and satisfying. Clearly made on a shoestring budget that probably couldn’t afford a second take, the film still has its moments that grab your attention. And thanks to a surprisingly solid cast, it ends up being a much better watch than it should’ve been.

Spoilers Ahead

What happens in the film?

Luke Easton, the new sheriff in town, returns after nearly fifteen years, and he’s come a long way since he left. Back then, he was a broken man: his parents had died in a car crash, his sister Sara had gone missing, and he drowned himself in alcohol.

Ioan Gruffudd Recalls the ‘Fantastic Four’ That Made Money: ‘We Were Being True to the Comic’
Image
It’s perhaps the comic book film genre’s greatest conundrum: how do you crack the Fantastic Four? This weekend, despite positive word of mouth and a solid opening weekend haul, the quartet’s latest — subtitled “First Steps” — tumbled 66% at the domestic box office. Undoubtedly, before Hollywood looks to craft the next adventure, they’ll look back at what has worked before — and the most recent unequivocal success came from the simply titled “Fantastic Four” in 2005, which featured Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, and Iaon Gruffudd.

Now, “unequivocal,” to be fair, does not count reviews — “First Steps” has most certainly outpaced this older version in terms of critical reception. But the film grossed three times its budget and managed to produce a sequel in 2007 — “Rise of the Silver Surfer” — which also made money. Of course, after that, Marvel Studios became a thing, and something called the MCU happened. But...

Hugh Jackman's Cut Fantastic Four Cameo Addressed By Original Reeds Richards Star 20 Years Later
Image
Marvel’s first family may have just found its way into the MCU, but Fantastic Four’s original Reed Richards has finally spoken about scrapped plans for a Wolverine cameo in the 2005 movie. Serving as the sixth Marvel movie released by 20th Century Fox following the success of 2000’s X-Men, eager-eyed fans have since spotted several X-Men Easter eggs throughout.

In addition to magazine covers referencing X-Men cast members James Marsden and Rebecca Romijn, Fantastic Four’s original DVD release also contained a deleted scene where Ioan Gruffudd’s Reed Richards attempts to impress Jessica Alba’s Sue Storm by using his powers to transform his face into a “stronger man.” That man ends up being none other than Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.

Speaking with Vultureabout his time as Mister Fantastic, Gruffudd was quizzed about the infamous deleted scene and Fantastic Four’s attempts to introduce a Wolverine cameo. Admitting...

Image
It’s been 20 years since Fantastic Four hit theaters in 2005, bringing Marvel’s first family to the big screen. 8 Years Later: Marvel’s Hulk‑Wolverine Hybrid Still Has No MCU Debut Despite Being Peak Entertainment
Image
We all came across Weapon H through Totally Awesome Hulk #22 in 2017, and since then, fans haven’t stopped talking about his MCU debut. That’s right, on paper, he’s a perfect mashup of Marvel’s heaviest hitters, Hulk‘s brute force, and Wolverine‘s claws on top of combat skills. But underneath all of that is something more complicated.

The man behind the monster is Clayton Cortez, who isn’t just built for destruction. In fact, he’s carrying the weight of trauma and an identity crisis. So, why hasn’t Marvel pulled the trigger on him yet? Especially now with the Studios leaning heavily into monsters, mutants, and everything messy in between? Let’s dive deeper.

“It’s very real to me…”: Jessica Alba’s Connection to Sue Storm in Fantastic Four (2005) Went Beyond Acting and Vanessa Kirby Will Have to Beat That
Image
With the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps approaching fast, the fans are reminiscing about the year 2005, when actress Jessica Alba played the role of Sue Storm in Fantastic Four.

Her performance is considered by most fans to have set a bar for the character, and it was all thanks to Alba’s connection to her and her flaws. In an interview with RadioFree, she said:

Yes, I love that Sue tends to be quite emotional and a little controlling. And it’s very real to me because I’m a little controlling, and I can tend to be a little sensitive.

And now, with the revival of this superhero team in the MCU, actress Vanessa Kirby has taken the role of the next Invisible Woman. But with Alba’s iconic performance still being hailed as a benchmark, it’ll be difficult for Kirby to sway audience expectations in her favor.

Netflix’s New French Crime Thriller Miniseries Is Gunning for ’Squid Game’s Crown on Streaming Charts
Image
Squid Game's reign over the Netflix charts has gotten a bit more tenuous with the introduction of another breakout international hit. On the global streaming charts, the recently released French crime thriller miniseries, Under a Dark Sun, has soared to second place and is the only show within striking distance of the South Korean phenomenon, which debuted its third season at the end of June. Under a Dark Sun's rise has been quiet, premiering on July 9 to relatively little fanfare, only to now rank #1 in 28 countries around the globe and even hit #5 in the United States. Complete with a twisty and tense murder mystery across six episodes starring Oscar nominee Isabelle Adjani, it's managed to naturally capture the attention of audiences around the globe in the face of some otherwise heavy hitters like The Sandman Season 2 and the recent hit 7 Bears.

Under a Dark Sun centers on...

Everyone Is Flocking to Netflix's New 6-Episode Crime Show That's Quietly Dominating the Global Streaming Charts
Image
Netflix's new crime drama Under a Dark Sunis quietly taking over the streaming charts.

Per FlixPatrol, Under a Dark Sun (Qui Sème le Vent in French) has claimed the number two overall spot on the global streaming charts for Netflix for Jul. 15. The series is currently the number one streaming series in 26 countries, ranging from Ukraine to Switzerland to Jamaica, and holds the overall number 6 spot in the United States as of the time of writing.

Under a Dark Sun premiered on Netflix on Jul. 9 and largely slipped under the radar of many North American critics and viewers. The series stars Ava Baya as Alba Mazier, or Alba Lassere, a single mother who takes a job at the sprawling Lassere flower farm prior to starting a new life in Barcelona with her young son. Shortly after taking the job, Lassere family patriarch Arnauld is murdered, a crime which Alba...

Jessica Alba Is Dating a MCU Hero: Origin of Her Dating Rumor With Danny Ramirez
Image
Three children and many years together later, Jessica Alba and Cash Warren went their separate ways earlier this year, but fans are convinced that the actress may have found herself in another high-profile relationship.

Tinseltown is no stranger to rumors about a celebrity’s love life and Alba is not an exception. She has recently been linked with ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘ and ‘Captain America: Brave New World‘ actor, Danny Ramirez. Here’s how the rumors took flight.

On July 14, TMZ reported that Alba was spotted at the airport along with a mystery man, whose identity seemed to be a mystery thanks to a baseball cap covering his face. The duo was taking a flight out of Cancun to Lax, boarding American Airlines at 5 Pm. Needless to say, fans were restless to put a name to the face.

Just a while later, TMZ came out with another report, revealing that the...

Under a Dark Sun Season 2 Gets Status Update from Netflix Series Actors: 'It Calls for a Sequel'
Image
The ending of Netflix's French miniseries, Under a Dark Sun (aka Soleil Noir), leaves audiences with a twist that "calls for a sequel," according to the series' stars. The twist-filled family thriller follows Alba, a woman whose life is entwined with the wealthy Lasserre family after she takes a job at their flower farm. After the family patriarch, Arnaud, dies mysteriously, Alba is listed in his will and subsequently becomes the main suspect, as her true connections to the family are revealed.

After six episodes of intrigue, backstabbing, and family drama (in a similar vein to Netflix's The Perfect Couple), Under a Dark Sun concludes with a surprising twist. After suggesting that Alba was Arnaud's secret child, the truth is revealed that she is actually the child of Arnaud's son, Mathieu, who had a brief affair with her mother, Nadia, years earlier. Mathieu did not know about Nadia's pregnancy...

Netflix’s Under A Dark Sun Character Guide
Image
Under a Dark Sun is a thriller that does not go beyond the Lassere family to pick its heroes, victims, and villains. It isn’t the show’s limitation but a carrier of the show’s theme of familial trauma, which runs intergenerationally, making monsters out of victims. The patriarchs—Arnauld and Mathieu—had planted a seed of infidelity and violence that grew into a foliage of wrongdoings in the generations to come. The major actions are tied to the women in the series—whether it is Beatrice’s gambling and decision to marry Jaques to secure the estate, Alba’s instincts to go to any length to protect her son, Manon’s thirst for avenging Josephine’s condition, or Natasha’s quiet entry to reclaim the mansion where she was once mishandled. However, although the women seem to be responsible for driving the actions, the root cause of the...

Under a Dark Sun Recap & Ending Explained: Who murdered Arnaud?
Image
The new French thriller, Under a Dark Sun, aims to be the latest binge obsession. It has all the designed elements of a guilty pleasure: families thick with secrets, hiding more than they will let on, shocking murders and conspiracies and revelations into illicit, repressed relationships. It’s supposed to hook you but becomes something looser, unfocused and unsure. Intrigue works when there’s solid character motivations and the reveals are threaded with sincerity and craft. None of it is present in the show, which just dials up surprise and attacks in a terribly implausible fashion. It even has the audacity to tack in the great Isabelle Adjani onto one of the most thankless roles. She wields a lot of showy threats but ultimately gets nothing worth her salt. There’s a crisis in thrillers and the show is symptomatic of all its malaise.

Under a Dark Sun Episode 1 Recap:

Alba has fled her husband,...

‘Under A Dark Sun’ Family Tree: Who Are Alba’s Real Parents?
Image
Netflix’s big new thriller, Under A Dark Sun, is about a woman who finds herself in the middle of some family drama that she didn’t even know she was a part of. The convoluted thriller certainly knows how to hit you with a twist, but that also means that if you don’t have the time to pay attention to all the details, you may miss out on the who’s who when it comes to the family tree, making it all the more annoying. So to make things easier, I’m going to list all the names you need to know and try to get their relationships right so that it’s a bit easier to understand character motivations and Under A Dark Sun’s ultimate ending. The protagonist of the show might be Alba, but everyone from the Lasserre family is nearly as important to her.

Under a Dark Sun Review: Come for the Mystery, Stay for Isabelle Adjani
Image
French thrillers have a certain style, a promise of tangled histories and simmering passions set against a chic, moody backdrop. Under a Dark Sun opens by delivering exactly that. We meet Alba Mazier, a young mother whose frantic escape from an unseen past leads her and her son, Leo, to a sprawling flower farm.

She’s there for a job interview she never arranged. The farm’s patriarch, Arnaud Lasserre, hires her anyway. This could be a story of provincial charity, except Arnaud is murdered the next day, and a witness saw Alba fleeing the scene. The police have their prime suspect.

The hook sinks deeper when Arnaud’s will is read: he has named Alba, his secret biological daughter, as heir to a quarter of his estate. Suddenly, a woman running from her past has a multimillion-euro reason to be a killer.

The Plot Thickens, Then Curdles

The series...

‘Under A Dark Sun’ Netflix Review: Like Playing A Game Of Twister But In Your Head
Image
At the risk of being canceled, I want to say that every time we get a new European thriller, on Netflix specifically, I’m always skeptical because they’re often like a straight man with no personality, generic and sex crazy. Jokes aside, though, the thriller market is filled with hits and misses because it’s honestly too hard to get right. So we do reward the stuff that seems to do okay, even if it’s not perfect. So I will be telling you about the good and bad aspects of this show so you can decide if it’s worth your time or not. Under A Dark Sun tells the story of Alba, a young woman who finds herself at a flower estate looking for a job, only for a massive incident to occur soon after, leaving her to revisit her past and worry about her son’s future.

Under A Dark Sun Recap & Ending Explained: What Is The Series About?
Image
What connects a family—is it the blood or the souls that merge generations after generations, bringing offspring into the earth who resemble their parents too closely? A family is a unit—a father and a mother, fused in the sacred tie of marriage, a vow to keep for life. It must seem pretty linear—the children inherit their parent’s doings. However, what happens when the units that make a family multiply? When a third person enters the marriage, it creates a pool of forbidden truths that needs to be covered up. For the newer generations to come, keeping a place within the lineage becomes a question of identity, but it also becomes a war against your own brothers and sisters.

Netflix’s latest thriller, Under a Dark Sun, is a tale of murders within the family, deeply motivated by the cause of revenge, repressed secrets about birth, and...

‘Under A Dark Sun’ Recap (Episodes 1-6): Who Killed Arnaud?
Image
Netflix’s new French series, Under a Dark Sun, is centered around Alba, a young mother desperately trying to start a new life with her son, Leo, at a rose farm. Her parents wanted the custody of Leo because they believed Alba was not capable of looking after him. She used to be an addict and was a suspect in the death of her druggie boyfriend, Demetri. But she was determined to prove them wrong, and she had decided to move to Barcelona for a fresh start. But she didn’t have enough money to turn her dreams into reality; she needed a job to make just enough to move to a new country. She’d received an email from Lasserre Estate inviting her for an interview. She enthusiastically showed up at the property, but to her surprise the owner, Arnaud Lasserre, told her that he didn’t have any job position to offer her.

‘Under A Dark Sun’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Is Nadia Dead Or Alive?
Image
Under A Dark Sun’s ending certainly implies that there’s a chance for the thriller to make a big return for a second season. While the show starts off a little bit slow, the latter half throws dark twist after twist at us, some unnecessary, but some pretty interesting for sure. However, the twists are well explained and don’t leave us with too many questions. But I suppose you’ve got to pay attention to really keep up with the story, so if you were distracted by what’s on the stove or your Instagram feed, I’ve got you covered. At the beginning of the show, Alba, a single young woman with a son, ends up on a rose estate for a job. She’d received an email about an interview, but the man who is meant to interview her says he never called her. At the time,...

15 Movies That Made Actors Want To Quit Hollywood
Image
As with any job, no one signs up for a film expecting the worst. However, there have been projects that made actors want to downright quit Hollywood altogether. Sometimes, it's about the immense shame they feel starring in dud productions; other times, it's about everything else around the movies that leaves a bitter taste in their mouths. Then, there are also the films where the actors expected their careers to skyrocket to superstardom, but the stars simply did not align.

Whichever way, it isn't all sunshine and rainbows in showbiz, because the entertainment industry knows how to shatter hearts and leave a boulevard of broken dreams in its bloody wake. The good news is that even though the likes of Christian Bale and Margot Robbie thought about calling it a day at a point in their careers, they didn't. They stuck around, and Hollywood is better off because of their perseverance.

Will Trent Star Erika Christensen Shares The Advice She'd Give Will & Angie About Their Romance If They Were Her Friends
Image
Erika Christense, who plays Angie Polaski in Will Trent, has opened up about what advice she'd give her character and former flame Will Trent if they were friends. Angie and Will have a complicated on-and-off relationship; they continued to go back to each other due to their shared history as foster children. The pair has been romantically involved before, but now it seems unlikely that the two would ever rekindle what they once had. Angie does have a boyfriend, Dr. Seth McDale, while Will has a potential love interest in Marion Alba.

While speaking with ScreenRant's Rachel Foertsch, Christense discussed whether or not she thinks Angie and Will should get back together or remain friends. She mentioned that if she were friends with the pair, she would advise them to keep their relationship platonic; however, since they're filming a TV show, Christense hinted that maybe rekindling their romance could...

The Young Mother’s Home Review: A Tender Gaze on Liège’s Next Generation
Image
Within the specific geography of Liège, Belgium, “The Young Mother’s Home” presents a microcosm of young lives at a precipice. The film situates itself in a residential support facility, a space dedicated to underage mothers navigating the abrupt shift into parenthood.

These are individuals largely defined by challenging personal histories, carrying the weight of past difficulties into their new, demanding roles. The film adopts an observational, unadorned presentational style, striving for an authentic window into their existence.

Its narrative unfolds not through a singular protagonist’s arc but as a collection of interconnected stories, each young woman a vital thread. This approach allows for an exploration of profound hardship, the fundamental human search for connection, and the quiet emergence of strength in circumstances that might otherwise seem to offer little reprieve.

The film draws its emotional power from the distinct yet...

‘Young Mothers’ Review: Belgium’s Dardenne Brothers Adopt a Wider Focus for Their Most Humane Drama in More Than a Decade
Image
Before turning their attention to ripped-from-reality social justice stories, Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne got their start making short documentaries set in working-class housing projects. They brought that same immersive, observational approach with them to their fiction features, reflected in the long-take handheld camerawork, gritty street-level locations and casting of nonprofessional actors that have become their signature. And yet, it’s doubtful that anyone would have mistaken a Dardenne film for a documentary … until now.

“Young Mothers” is the duo’s most convincing film yet, owing largely to the way they have widened the focus from one or two characters in crisis — the sort of urgency that drove everything from “Rosetta” to “Tori and Lokita” — to a loose choral form. Instead of presenting a single, nail-biting dramatic situation, the Dardennes’ no-less-engaging ensemble drama dedicates quality time to a quartet of young women — girls, really — under the care of a maternal assistance home in Liège.

‘Young Mothers’ Review: Taut and Tender Drama About a Home for Teenage Moms Shows What the Dardennes Do Best
Image
Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardennes have settled into a comfortable niche over the course of 13 feature films. Well-researched social-realist depictions of marginalized people butting up against intransigent institutions is the way the record goes. To be fair to les frères Dardennes, there is a reliable level of unshowy competence as well as an integrity to their insistence on embedding with unglamorous, recognizable people.

All the while, they facilitate other filmmakers in bringing related French and Belgian slice-of-life visions to fruition. They helped to produce one of the best debuts of last year, “Julie Keeps Quiet” by Leonardo Van Dijl. At this edition of Cannes alone there are two films to bear their names as producers: “Enzo” by Laurent Cantet and Robin Campillo opened Directors Fortnight and, neatly enough, “Adam’s Sake” by Laura Wandel opened Critics’ Week.

Earnest force-for-cinema credentials established, how does “Young Mothers” fit into their body of work?...

Breaking Baz @ Cannes: Floating With Women In Cinema At The Hotel du Cap & Breaking Into The Mubi/Match Factory Soiree
Image
Catherine Deneuve and Imogen Poots, having feasted on tomato ravioli with basil and coulis of green zebra tomatoes — and get this, infused with lemon thyme! — were leaving the Women in Cinema dinner at Eden Roc at the fabled Hotel du Cap as I pulled up in an Uber.

Wait! That was only the starter. The main course consisted of fillet of John Dory with black olive barigoule of artichokes.

Anyhow, Deneuve and Poots were outta the building. They were done. I cased the dining room and observed that the trio of deserts — strawberry and elderflower profiterole, bergamot cheesecake and chocolate pecan tart — remained untouched where they’d been seated. I popped a couple of the tiny profiteroles in my mouth. Yum.

I had been invited by the Red Sea Film Foundation for the afterparty.

Delicious Review: A Gilded Thriller with Uneven Bite
Image
Sunlight slants through vine-draped pergolas, bathing a Provencal villa in an almost complacent glow—a welcome that conceals deepening unease. In Delicious, Nele Mueller‑Stöfen’s directorial debut, a wealthy German family—John, an academic restless for respect; Esther, a corporate strategist craving reassurance; Philipp and Alba, children caught between admiration and neglect—arrives for a summer retreat behind iron gates and manicured lawns. Their polished routine fractures on a moonlit road when they discover Teodora, a limping stranger, and invite her into their sanctuary.

Positioned within the “eat‑the‑rich” thriller tradition, the film unfolds as a slow burn of manners and mistrust, each courtesy bearing the weight of potential betrayal. Languid pacing and pregnant silences chart the shifting power between host and guest, while hints of social critique flicker beneath every sunset shot. Mueller‑Stöfen frames opulence with an almost clinical detachment—wide vistas of lavender fields echo the family’s emotional distance,...

‘Delicious’ Ending Explained & Movie Story: Did Alba And Phillip Survive?
Image
Director Nele Mueller-Stöfen’s drama movie, Delicious, is the latest, not-so-subtle addition to the ‘Eat-the-Rich’ genre of movies, one that tries to take inspiration from movies like Parasite and Saltburn in its portrayal of class conflict but ends up vilifying the downtrodden even more in the process. I’m sure the makers had set out to project a much different sentiment, as the critique of capitalism and the apathy of the privileged is very much apparent from the very first scene of the movie. However, the final half of the narrative takes on a very different, predictable turn—which goes to ruin the social commentary the movie was trying to make. It would have been better had the makers chosen a different genre altogether, as the comedy and horror genres have proven to be effective in acting as vessels for this class-conflict theme. Unfortunately, being constrained as a drama, Delicious is a one-trick pony,...
