I appreciate films that are exactly what they promise in the synopsis, nothing more, nothing less. Desert Dawn is something that fits that category. A laid-back western about a big guy who returns to his hometown as the new sheriff and takes on a drug cartel—simple, straight, and satisfying. Clearly made on a shoestring budget that probably couldn’t afford a second take, the film still has its moments that grab your attention. And thanks to a surprisingly solid cast, it ends up being a much better watch than it should’ve been.

What happens in the film?

Luke Easton, the new sheriff in town, returns after nearly fifteen years, and he’s come a long way since he left. Back then, he was a broken man: his parents had died in a car crash, his sister Sara had gone missing, and he drowned himself in alcohol.

It’s perhaps the comic book film genre’s greatest conundrum: how do you crack the Fantastic Four? This weekend, despite positive word of mouth and a solid opening weekend haul, the quartet’s latest — subtitled “First Steps” — tumbled 66% at the domestic box office. Undoubtedly, before Hollywood looks to craft the next adventure, they’ll look back at what has worked before — and the most recent unequivocal success came from the simply titled “Fantastic Four” in 2005, which featured Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, and Iaon Gruffudd.

Now, “unequivocal,” to be fair, does not count reviews — “First Steps” has most certainly outpaced this older version in terms of critical reception. But the film grossed three times its budget and managed to produce a sequel in 2007 — “Rise of the Silver Surfer” — which also made money. Of course, after that, Marvel Studios became a thing, and something called the MCU happened. But...

It isn’t the show’s limitation but a carrier of the show’s theme of familial trauma, which runs intergenerationally, making monsters out of victims. The patriarchs—Arnauld and Mathieu—had planted a seed of infidelity and violence that grew into a foliage of wrongdoings in the generations to come. The major actions are tied to the women in the series—whether it is Beatrice’s gambling and decision to marry Jaques to secure the estate, Alba’s instincts to go to any length to protect her son, Manon’s thirst for avenging Josephine’s condition, or Natasha’s quiet entry to reclaim the mansion where she was once mishandled. The new French thriller, Under a Dark Sun, aims to be the latest binge obsession. It has all the designed elements of a guilty pleasure: families thick with secrets, hiding more than they will let on, shocking murders and conspiracies and revelations into illicit, repressed relationships. It’s supposed to hook you but becomes something looser, unfocused and unsure. Intrigue works when there’s solid character motivations and the reveals are threaded with sincerity and craft. None of it is present in the show, which just dials up surprise and attacks in a terribly implausible fashion. It even has the audacity to tack in the great Isabelle Adjani onto one of the most thankless roles. She wields a lot of showy threats but ultimately gets nothing worth her salt. There’s a crisis in thrillers and the show is symptomatic of all its malaise.

Netflix’s big new thriller, Under A Dark Sun, is about a woman who finds herself in the middle of some family drama that she didn’t even know she was a part of. The convoluted thriller certainly knows how to hit you with a twist, but that also means that if you don’t have the time to pay attention to all the details, you may miss out on the who’s who when it comes to the family tree, making it all the more annoying. So to make things easier, I’m going to list all the names you need to know and try to get their relationships right so that it’s a bit easier to understand character motivations and Under A Dark Sun’s ultimate ending. The protagonist of the show might be Alba, but everyone from the Lasserre family is nearly as important to her.

French thrillers have a certain style, a promise of tangled histories and simmering passions set against a chic, moody backdrop. Under a Dark Sun opens by delivering exactly that. We meet Alba Mazier, a young mother whose frantic escape from an unseen past leads her and her son, Leo, to a sprawling flower farm.

She’s there for a job interview she never arranged. The farm’s patriarch, Arnaud Lasserre, hires her anyway. This could be a story of provincial charity, except Arnaud is murdered the next day, and a witness saw Alba fleeing the scene. The police have their prime suspect.

The hook sinks deeper when Arnaud’s will is read: he has named Alba, his secret biological daughter, as heir to a quarter of his estate. Suddenly, a woman running from her past has a multimillion-euro reason to be a killer.

The Plot Thickens, Then Curdles

At the risk of being canceled, I want to say that every time we get a new European thriller, on Netflix specifically, I’m always skeptical because they’re often like a straight man with no personality, generic and sex crazy. Jokes aside, though, the thriller market is filled with hits and misses because it’s honestly too hard to get right. So we do reward the stuff that seems to do okay, even if it’s not perfect. So I will be telling you about the good and bad aspects of this show so you can decide if it’s worth your time or not. Under A Dark Sun tells the story of Alba, a young woman who finds herself at a flower estate looking for a job, only for a massive incident to occur soon after, leaving her to revisit her past and worry about her son’s future.

What connects a family—is it the blood or the souls that merge generations after generations, bringing offspring into the earth who resemble their parents too closely? A family is a unit—a father and a mother, fused in the sacred tie of marriage, a vow to keep for life. It must seem pretty linear—the children inherit their parent’s doings. However, what happens when the units that make a family multiply? When a third person enters the marriage, it creates a pool of forbidden truths that needs to be covered up. For the newer generations to come, keeping a place within the lineage becomes a question of identity, but it also becomes a war against your own brothers and sisters.

Netflix’s new French series, Under a Dark Sun, is centered around Alba, a young mother desperately trying to start a new life with her son, Leo, at a rose farm. Her parents wanted the custody of Leo because they believed Alba was not capable of looking after him. She used to be an addict and was a suspect in the death of her druggie boyfriend, Demetri. But she was determined to prove them wrong, and she had decided to move to Barcelona for a fresh start. But she didn’t have enough money to turn her dreams into reality; she needed a job to make just enough to move to a new country. She’d received an email from Lasserre Estate inviting her for an interview. She enthusiastically showed up at the property, but to her surprise the owner, Arnaud Lasserre, told her that he didn’t have any job position to offer her.

Under A Dark Sun’s ending certainly implies that there’s a chance for the thriller to make a big return for a second season. While the show starts off a little bit slow, the latter half throws dark twist after twist at us, some unnecessary, but some pretty interesting for sure. However, the twists are well explained and don’t leave us with too many questions. But I suppose you’ve got to pay attention to really keep up with the story, so if you were distracted by what’s on the stove or your Instagram feed, I’ve got you covered. Before turning their attention to ripped-from-reality social justice stories, Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne got their start making short documentaries set in working-class housing projects. They brought that same immersive, observational approach with them to their fiction features, reflected in the long-take handheld camerawork, gritty street-level locations and casting of nonprofessional actors that have become their signature. And yet, it’s doubtful that anyone would have mistaken a Dardenne film for a documentary … until now.

“Young Mothers” is the duo’s most convincing film yet, owing largely to the way they have widened the focus from one or two characters in crisis — the sort of urgency that drove everything from “Rosetta” to “Tori and Lokita” — to a loose choral form. Instead of presenting a single, nail-biting dramatic situation, the Dardennes’ no-less-engaging ensemble drama dedicates quality time to a quartet of young women — girls, really — under the care of a maternal assistance home in Liège.

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardennes have settled into a comfortable niche over the course of 13 feature films. Well-researched social-realist depictions of marginalized people butting up against intransigent institutions is the way the record goes. To be fair to les frères Dardennes, there is a reliable level of unshowy competence as well as an integrity to their insistence on embedding with unglamorous, recognizable people.

All the while, they facilitate other filmmakers in bringing related French and Belgian slice-of-life visions to fruition. They helped to produce one of the best debuts of last year, “Julie Keeps Quiet” by Leonardo Van Dijl. At this edition of Cannes alone there are two films to bear their names as producers: “Enzo” by Laurent Cantet and Robin Campillo opened Directors Fortnight and, neatly enough, “Adam’s Sake” by Laura Wandel opened Critics’ Week.

Earnest force-for-cinema credentials established, how does “Young Mothers” fit into their body of work?...

Catherine Deneuve and Imogen Poots, having feasted on tomato ravioli with basil and coulis of green zebra tomatoes — and get this, infused with lemon thyme! — were leaving the Women in Cinema dinner at Eden Roc at the fabled Hotel du Cap as I pulled up in an Uber.

Wait! That was only the starter. The main course consisted of fillet of John Dory with black olive barigoule of artichokes.

Anyhow, Deneuve and Poots were outta the building. They were done. I cased the dining room and observed that the trio of deserts — strawberry and elderflower profiterole, bergamot cheesecake and chocolate pecan tart — remained untouched where they’d been seated. I popped a couple of the tiny profiteroles in my mouth. Yum.

Following the streaming success of her Netflix original film, Trigger Warning, Jessica Alba is returning to the action genre once again as the lead in a new spy thriller, The Mark.

Per Deadline, Alba is set to lead The Mark, a new action spy thriller from director Justin Chadwick. Written by Ronnie Christensen, The Mark follows Eden (Alba), an "enigmatic spy on a covert and dangerous mission. When Eden pulls single father Ben Dawson into her world of high-stakes espionage, his life is turned upside down," per the official synopsis. Currently, no other stars are attached to the project, but production on the film is set to begin in July. There is no official release window for The Mark.

After a five-year absence from movies, Alba returned to the limelight in 2024 with Trigger Warning, a Netflix original action movie that became a streaming success in the weeks after its release on the platform.

I’m sure the makers had set out to project a much different sentiment, as the critique of capitalism and the apathy of the privileged is very much apparent from the very first scene of the movie. However, the final half of the narrative takes on a very different, predictable turn—which goes to ruin the social commentary the movie was trying to make.
