Two Sentence Horror Stories Quietly Canceled at The CW
Image
Many fan favorite shows have been recently canceled by The CW amid content strategy changes at the network, and it's been confirmed that another popular series was quietly axed as well. Back in 2019, The CW premiered the first season of Two Sentence Horror Stories, an anthology series with each episode featuring a self-contained plot and cast of characters. Season 2 would follow in early 2021 with the third season airing in early 2022.

Halfway through 2023, there's been no word on when Two Sentence Horror Stories may potentially return for a fourth season, leading to speculation that the show was finished. TVLine reports that any such speculation would be accurate. The horror anthology series was reportedly axed, which was "to the surprise of perhaps no one," with no fourth season on the way.

The CW's massacre of content has claimed many other victims in recent months. Most recently, the network put an end to the Walker prequel Walker Independence,...

DVD Review: "The Exhibitionists" (2012), A Film By Michael Melamedoff
By Dollie Banner

When I came of age in the eighties and nineties, cinema art houses were filled with American independent films, most of them gems. It seemed that then movie lovers could see nearly every film released. In the years since the number of independent films have grown exponentially, and I often worry that I’m bypassing, or even worse completely ignorant, of some worthwhile films that get lost in cinematic obscurity.

The Exhibitionists (2012), the second feature from director Michael Melamedoff is such a film, a compelling chamber piece about seven characters revealing their true desires over the course of two nights. At the heart of the film is fragile Regina (Pepper Binkley), who we meet nervously awaiting the arrival of her husband Walter (Richard Short), an agent provocateur filmmaker just returned from a cross-country film shoot. In tow he brings fellow crewmember Gordo (Daniel London), whose dutiful wife...

Asylum Seekers and Delight: A Movie Review
*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Breaking Glass Pictures.

Director: Rania Ajami.

Writers: Rania Ajami and Jake Pilikian.

The Asylum Seekers is a surreal comedy from director Rania Ajami. This is her first feature and this title is an offbeat look at the possibilities of insanity. Breaking Glass Pictures will release this title on DVD August 30th and Asylum Seekers is a high recommend, based on the interesting atmosphere created by Ajami and cinematographer Lyn Moncrief. Almost every scene is highly saturated, but it is the characters and the message which stand out the most.

There are six supposed lunatics moving into the local asylum. However, there is only one bed available. So the "evangelical nihilist," the "trophy mouse wife," the "gender bender refuge," and many more characters must battle it out to prove that they are more insane than the next. If this sounds strange,...

Exclusive: Angus MacLachlan Delves Inside Stone
Stone screenwriter Angus MacLachlan discusses working with this talented cast, shooting in Michigan, new projects and more.

Screenwriter Angus MacLachlan was put on the map in 2005 with his indie sensation Junebug, which also launched Amy Adams into the acting stratosphere with her Oscar-nominated performance. In 2005, Angus MacLachlan also started turning his one of his plays into a screenplay, and five years later, Stone was released. Stone will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 18 and I recently had the chance to speak with this talented screenwriter over the phone about this drama. Here's what he had to say below:

I read that this started as a play before you turned it into a screenplay. Can you talk about where that original idea came from and how it evolved into the script?

Angus MacLachlan: Sure. I usually can always tell where something comes from, but this one happened very strangely.

Exclusive: John Curran Dishes on Stone
Stone director John Curran talks about his talented trio of stars, shooting in Michigan, the religious aspects of the movie and more.

Director John Curran's career is the epitome of going against the grain in Hollywood. He takes in distinctly different material from one project to the next, with indie gems such as Praise, We Don't Live Here Anymore and The Painted Veil to his credit. And what's more different than a romantic period piece like The Painted Veil? A gritty prison drama such as John Curran's latest movie Stone, which will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 18. I had the chance to speak with John Curran about his new movie, which stars Robert De Niro as a retiring parole officer, Edward Norton as a supposedly-reformed felon and Milla Jovovich as the convict's tempting wife. Here's what the director had to say:

Interview: ‘Stone’ Star Edward Norton, Director John Curran on Going Against Hollywood’s Grain
Chicago – Many filmmakers speak of going against the grain. By virtue of desiring to take a road less traveled, though, often you’re actually going with the same grain as everyone else who wants to be different. While the somber pacing for “Stone” was selected for the reasons director John Curran tells us below, the style might have also been chosen because that’s what he knows best and can do.

With a similar feel to his acclaimed film “The Painted Veil,” Curran doesn’t have a history of filming action films in the vein of “The Bourne Identity”. In “Stone,” Curran does what he does best: takes a dramatic script and translates it into compelling tension. He doesn’t rely on special effects or explosions (well, just once) to keep our eyes glued.
