Exclusive Video: Director Dean Alioto On N.J. Drone Mystery, UFOs, His Documentary ‘The Alien Perspective’
Image
In a conversation with uInterview, director Dean Alioto shared the inspiration for his new documentary, The Alien Perspective. The film explores a series of different theories regarding the experience of extraterrestrial visitors, examined by various academics. Alioto first explained why he wanted to approach this documentary from a different perspective than he has in the past. “Even as a filmmaking excercise, I was like, ‘Oh, what would it be like if we were to look at it from their alien perspective, even as a hypothetical’…I want to pull in people that are amazing, world-renown scientists from Oxford, NASA, Harvard, etc., and get their take on what that would be,” he told uInterview founder Erik Meers. The Alien Perspective can be streamed exclusively on Apple TV Plus.

Friday, January 10 – 6 New Horror Movies Released This Week Plus “Goosebumps” Returns
Image
A brand new year for the horror genre officially kicked off this week, and the first full week of 2025 has already provided us with six new releases plus the return of a popular TV series.

Here’s all the new horror that released January 6 – January 10, 2025!

For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.

An investigative documentary that dives deep into one of Hollywood’s most intriguing “what could have been” stories, George A. Romero’s Resident Evil hit VOD this past Tuesday.

In 1998, Constantin Film set out to bring Resident Evil, the legendary horror video game, to the big screen. They enlisted George A. Romero, the visionary director who redefined the zombie genre, to adapt the project. But despite the perfect pairing of horror’s greatest minds, Romero’s vision for Resident Evil was never realized.

Now, for the first time, director Brandon Salisbury’s documentary...

Early Found Footage Film ‘The McPherson Tape’ Remains Chillingly Effective Decades Later
Image
The Legend of Boggy Creek. Cannibal Holocaust. Man Bites Dog. These are the usual suspects whenever someone brings up the origins of modern-day found footage. However, it was a long road full of cinematic experiments before these films would give rise to the movie that popularized the genre – The Blair Witch Project. After all, before Myrick and Sanchez’s film, most proto-found-footage productions were more interested in emulating documentaries and news footage than recreating amateur recordings that just happened to capture something creepy.

I say “most” because there is one notable exception. An infamous film so dedicated to its DIY presentation that many viewers were originally unaware that it was meant to be a film at all. Naturally, I’m referring to Dean Alioto’s iconic UFO Abduction (also known as The McPherson Tape), a misunderstood classic that I believe started all the familiar tropes of contemporary found footage over...

Dick Maas Turned His Own Elevator Horror Movie ‘The Lift’ into ‘The Shaft’ [Revenge of the Remakes]
Image
While horror remakes are inevitable, its rare that international filmmakers are hired to helm American remakes of their originals. Even fewer filmmakers get to make not one, but Two movies about sentient killer elevators (Killovators? Murdervators?). Lucky for us, Dick Maas laughs in the face of convention. His feature debut, The Lift, is a zany 1980s concoction of A.I. paranoia and cable-attached monsters, kickstarting his career as an odd duckling who cherishes a proper B-Movie script. Movies like Amsterdamned, Prey (aka Uncaged), and Sint would further cement his audacious brand of metropolitan nightmares that treat midnight movie storylines with higher prestige, only adding to the Dutchman’s legacy.

Maas’ The Lift might seem like a strange choice for an American remake—a procedural thriller about corrupt elevator companies—but it’s hailed as one of the Netherlands’ premiere horror imports. Imagine an episode of The Twilight Zone with more...

The Last Podcast (2024) Review
Image
Charlie Bailey (Eric Tabach) is the host of a podcast called ParaNormalcy, in which he aims to debunk various supernatural occurrences in his own sarcastic way. When he’s contacted by junior professor Duncan Slayback (Gabriel Rush), who claims to have scientific proof that ghosts do not exist, Charlie jumps at the chance to put together a landmark episode and gain some much needed clicks. However, Duncan’s experiment proves to be far more drastic than Charlie expected, leaving Duncan dead and Charlie with his life changed forever. But with change comes opportunity, and with that opportunity comes the potential for growth – in both the personal and the online follower sense.

Writer/director Dean Alioto cites An American Werewolf In London as the basis for the buddy back and forth which underpins this smart blend of humour and horror and, yes, the one’s alive/one’s dead template will...

‘Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County’ – This Early Found Footage Film Terrorized Upn in 1998
Image
For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the found footage remake Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County, which aired in 1998 on the Upn Network.

Found footage in its early days was a rare novelty that often astounded and confounded audiences. The overseas had bits like “Ghost Watch” while the States had television movies like Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County. The latter is an early example of found footage, coming along just before The Blair Witch Project, making it a notable entry in the genre.

A remake of Dean Alioto’s 1989 low budget The McPherson Tape, Alien Abduction aired on January 20, 1998 and became something of an urban legend. Not only was it aired without much preamble on a network known mainly for comedies, but allegedly the movie caused a stir among audiences that assumed that we were watching actual accounts of a family confronting aliens in a rural countryside.

Five Sci-Fi Horror Movies Featuring Aliens to Stream This Week
Image
Among the new releases this week is Brian Duffield’s No One Will Save You, a home invasion with an alien twist starring Kaitlyn Dever and debuting on Hulu on September 22. With it comes the realization of how scarcely populated the sci-fi horror subgenre gets regarding the iconic Gray aliens. These quintessential aliens have emerged recently in the news, but their cinematic counterparts are rarer. That’s a shame, considering how effectively they induce terror, as evidenced by M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs (on Max).

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to the quieter alien invasions. These sci-fi horror films revolve around the Grays and similar extraterrestrials that are more content to invade and toy with their prey quietly.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

How One Found Footage Film Fooled a Generation
Image
It has always been important for found-footage movies to reinvent themselves. Since the subgenre’s popularity skyrocketed with The Blair Witch Project in 1999, there have been countless movies which have stuck painfully close to the formula and critics have flagged this as a problem. Often, movies that put a different spin on that formula have been more positively received. Recently, there have been shake-ups with movies like The Medium and Incantation which have both been widely acclaimed, as well as Zachary Donohue’s new series The Unknowable incorporating a style of found-footage in excellently inventive ways. One of the subgenre’s most effective additions actually came before The Blair Witch Project. In 1989 – ten years before its release – a movie called The McPherson Tape (aka UFO Abduction) was written, produced and directed by Dean Alioto. Alioto made the film with no budget and no professional actors. The result was a grainy...

Revisiting Thanksgiving Found Footage Nightmare ‘Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County’
Dean Alioto
The late ‘80s saw the release of writer/director/producer Dean Alioto’s The McPherson Tape, a lo-fi found footage precursor centered around an alien abduction during a family’s birthday celebration. A decade later, Alioto helmed a larger-budgeted and expanded remake for Upn, Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County, shifting the setting to Thanksgiving. The holiday set found-footage nightmare […]...

‘Portal’ Review
Stars: Ryan Merriman, Jamie Tisdale, Myk Watford, Heather Langenkamp, Reinaldo Zavarce, Najarra Townsend, Lindsay Seim, Courtney Nightingale, Yan Birch | Written by Peter Dukes, Dean Alioto | Directed by Dean Alioto

What’s that, yet Another horror film featuring ghost hunters? Surely that subject has been done to death by now… In fact it’s so played out that the idea of ghost hunters in horror has led to more horror comedies than actual horror films. However Portal sticks firmly in fear with it’s tale of Steven, an ambitious ghost hunter (Ryan Merriman), who is winning a losing battle against the falling ratings for his show Ghostseekers and his competitors Ghost Trackers – who seemingly having more money, and more clout, to produce a much more successful ghost-hunting show.

Desperate for a hit season finale Steven steals information on a haunted house, the Dalvas House, from his competitors. However the whole thing...

Heather Donahue in The Blair Witch Project (1999)
7 Found Footage Horror Movies That Predate ‘The Blair Witch Project’
Heather Donahue in The Blair Witch Project (1999)
As we’ve seen here in the first few weeks of 2014, the landscape of the horror genre is absolutely flooded with found footage movies, and we primarily have two movies to thank/blame for that; The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity.

While 1999’s Blair Witch Project is often credited as the first horror movie made in the Pov found footage style, such a claim is actually quite untrue. Though Blair Witch is no doubt the movie that popularized the style, and Paranormal Activity the one that re-invented it and brought it into a new decade, there were actually a handful of found footage films that came out well before the horrifying tale of the witch in the woods.

Here are seven of those handheld horror movies, which all predate The Blair Witch Project!

Exclusive Interview With Richard Schenkman On Man From Earth Millennium
In 2007 The Man From Earth took the internet by storm, introducing a mind-boggling, completely compelling science fiction concept to an unexpectedly wide audience. It was writer Jerome Bixby’s final work, and the film wasn’t made until almost a decade after his death. Now, six years after the film’s release, the filmmakers are listening to the audience cries for more and are making a sequel titled Man From Earth Millennium.

The first film’s director, Richard Schenkman, is back at the helm for this outing and I recently had the opportunity to talk to him about the project. We discussed getting the first film made, the struggles of funding this sort of movie, what can be expected from Man From Earth Millennium and much more.

Check out the full interview below.

Wgtc: How’s the Kickstarter campaign going so far?

Richard Schenkman: Regarding the campaign, we’re just three days in.
