Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Reveals How It's Paying Tribute To Legendary Franchise Characters
Image
Paramount recently released a series of images for their upcoming show "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy," and Trekkies are already poring over them, looking for clues, details, and character quirks that might more closely inform them as to what kind of series we'll be looking forward to. The cast for the series has already been announced, and it will include Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, Zoë Steiner, and Sandro Rosta as its central Starfleet Cadets. None of their characters' names have been released yet, but we'll know them soon enough.

The cast will also include Tig Notaro, reprising her role as Jett Reno from "Star Trek: Discovery," as well as Robert Picardo, reprising his role as The Doctor from "Star Trek: Voyager." Trekkies can tell you that "Voyager" is set a good 815 years before the 32nd century of "Starfleet Academy," but the Doctor is a hologram and, as we now see,...

9 Underrated '80s Sitcoms That Still Hold Up
Image
Some of the most popular sitcoms of all time came out of the eighties. Shows like M.A.S.H., Cheers, The Cosby Show and Family Ties won accolades and dominated the ratings. Even Seinfeld started in the eighties. Unfortunately, this left room for plenty of other sitcoms of the era to slip through the cracks.

Decades after those well-known classic sitcoms ruled the airwaves, some of the shows that didnt warrant as much attention at the time still hold up, and some are even more relevant now than when they first aired. There are plenty of great old-school laughs to be found; audiences just need to know where to look.

Star Trek: Tng's 10 Best USS Enterprise-d Bottle Episodes
Image
Bottle episodes allowed Star Trek: The Next Generation to produce lower-budget episodes by utilizing preexisting sets and the regular cast, resulting in fun and fascinating adventures. Some standout bottle episodes include "Suddenly Human," "Where Silence Has Lease," and "A Matter of Perspective," each exploring different concepts and characters within the confines of the USS Enterprise-d. These bottle episodes showcased the strengths of the Enterprise-d and the compelling and likable crew of Tng, making for compelling and enjoyable storytelling.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his crew on Star Trek: The Next Generation visited many strange new worlds, but some truly great episodes took place almost entirely on board the USS Enterprise-d. Exploring space can get expensive, and when Tng did a particularly high-budget episode, such as a period piece or a CGI-heavy space battle, producers would need to make low-budget episodes to offset the cost. This often resulted in bottle...

Rhoslc: Jen Shah's Co-Conspirators' Sentences Revealed
Image
Jen Shah from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City learned the fate of her co-conspirators as each was sentenced before her. Bravo fans will recall that Jen was arrested during Rhoslc season 2 as she tried to outrun the FBI on charges of committing wire fraud and money laundering. For months, the mother of two has stated she was not guilty, only to change her plea to guilty in July.

As Jen gets ready for her sentencing and crosses her fingers that she is given only three years, @bravobravoduckingbravo shared how other members of the case fared. While prosecutors are aiming for Jen to be held for at least 10 years behind bars, her former assistant, Stewart Smith, won't be sentenced until the very end. The outlet showed a list of "Tier A" defendants, which showed that Carl Morris was sentenced to 6.5 years and that Ryan Mult was given five years.

Image
Deidre Hall and Shannen Doherty, who appeared with Wilford Brimley on the 1980s NBC series Our House, lovingly remembered him in Instagram posts Sunday.

Our House ran for two seasons on NBC from 1986 to 1988. The drama detailed the life of the Witherspoons, a family adjusting to three generations living in the same house.

On Our House, Brimley portrayed retired widower Gus Witherspoon, who took in his late son’s family, including daughter-in-law Jessie (played by Hall) and grandchildren Kris (Shannen Doherty), David (Chad Allen), and Molly (Keri Houlihan).

Brimley died at age 85 on Saturday in St. George, Utah after suffering from a kidney issue for two months.

“We lost a great one yesterday,” Hall wrote. “Every day with Wilford was a life lesson. Heaven just got a lot more interesting.”

Later, Shannen Doherty posted her own Instagram tribute.

Class of 1986: Six Horror & Sci-Fi Movies Released in 1986 That Deserve More Love
When it comes to horror and sci-fi movies from 1986, there are several milestone titles that always come to mind first: Aliens, The Fly, Blue Velvet, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Manhunter, Poltergeist II: The Other Side, or even Psycho III, just to name a few. But like any great year of cinema, there are always a few underrated gems that get overshadowed along the way and should receive a little extra love. Here are six films from 1986 that I think deserve to be on every genre fan’s radar:

F/X: A movie about a special effects artist who gets mixed up in a government conspiracy, at a time when practical effects were in their heyday? Yes, please. F/X isn’t a film I hear a ton of folks talk about, but it has been on cable a lot lately, which means I’ve spent a few nights revisiting it,...

Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman Returns...With a Funny or Die Twist!
Jane Seymour, Chad Allen, Joe Lando, and Shawn Toovey in Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993)
Dr. Quinn is back! Sort of. Thanks to Funny or Die, we now know what a gritty Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman reboot would like. It's Dr. Quinn meets Breaking Bad. She is the one who knocks. Jane Seymour reprised her Emmy-nominated role for the new video and she was joined by several of her former costars including Joe Lando, Jonelle Allen and Chad Allen. We're getting some serious 1990s nostalgia over here! Dr. Quinn was known for using morphine—hey, it was the mid-1800s after all—so what happens when all the townsfolk become addicts? She slaps on a pair of Walter White-esque glasses and embraces her new drug lord persona, as TV characters are known to do. The original Dr. Quinn,...

The 10 Hottest Grown-Up Former Kid Stars
You heard the prompt: The 10 Hottest Former Child Stars. Can I confess something? It's harder to think of these than you think!

Let's face it, everybody's looks peak at a certain point, and if you're a child actor, there's a distinct chance you'll look your best at age 11. That's not the case with these 10 gents, who've grown up into seriously studly creatures. Here they are, ranked and ready for scrutiny.

10. Jonathan Lipnicki

The Jerry Maguire kid apparently enjoys the gym. The onetime kid star's body is basically an adamantium sheath, and he's also perfected his photogenic stoicism.

9. Chad Allen

Yes to gay child actors who come out, and Yes specifically to alums of the 1990 TV movie Camp Cucamonga, which I consider the Gone With the Wind of summer camp movies featuring G. Gordon Liddy in a supporting role. Chad's hot, out, and readily shirtless. Phew.

8. Devon Sawa

'St. Elsewhere' reunion: Cast members reflect on that controversial snow-globe ending
Denzel Washington, Ed Begley Jr., David Morse, Howie Mandel, Cynthia Sikes Yorkin, Ellen Bry, William Daniels, and Ed Flanders in St. Elsewhere (1982)
There are oodles of ways to end a TV series. Marriage! Death! Birth! Flashforward! It was all a dream! Ambiguous cut to black! In 1988, though, St. Elsewhere truly shook things up and gave us one of the most talked-about series finales in history with “the snow globe.” After watching six Emmy-nominated seasons of drama — medical and emotional, dark and light, envelope-pushing and heartstring-pulling — at the run-down St. Eligius, we were led to believe in the finale’s last scene that the entire show was actually a product of the imagination of (construction worker?) Donald Westphall’s autistic son, who was...

'Pretty Little Liars' holds its own with 'Dallas' when it comes to big TV reveals
"Dallas" (CBS, 1986): Soap operas had brought characters back from the dead before, but never so audaciously as this prime-time sudser did in its ninth-season finale, in which Pam Ewing (Victoria Principal) awoke to find her presumed-dead husband, Bobby (Patrick Duffy), alive and well in the shower. It turned out that Bobby's death and all the events that followed -- basically all of Season 9 -- were nothing but a dream Pam had.

"St. Elsewhere" (NBC, 1988): This medical drama took the "it was all a dream" gimmick to the next level, revealing in the series finale that the entire St. Eligius universe existed only in the mind of Tommy Westphall (Chad Allen), the nonverbal, autistic son of Dr. Donald Westphall -- who, the finale also revealed, was never a doctor.

"Newhart" (CBS, 1990): This sitcom put yet another twist on the dream reveal with a surprise callback to another series.

Kirk Cameron: Gay Controversy/Monumental Movie/God
"It seemed that perhaps the Lord was in this," Kirk Cameron (not Kurt Cameron) told Baptist Press. The Lord was in on what? From the beginning: A couple of weeks ago, Cameron landed in ungodly hot waters after making several anti-gay remarks on Piers Morgan's CNN talk show. While chatting with Morgan, he referred to homosexuality as "unnatural" and affirmed that it is "ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization." Following his comments, Cameron was taken to task by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and several of his fellow show-businessmen and women, including former Growing Pains co-stars Alan Thicke ("I'm getting him some new books. The Old Testament simply can't be expected to explain everything.") and Tracy Gold ("I am a strong supporter of the #Lgbt Community, and I believe in equal rights for all. #NOH8 #Love.") Though not thrilled that he is now widely perceived as a bigot,...

From Goofy Kids To Hollywood Hunks
Hollywood can be a tough place to navigate the transition from youth to adulthood. Child actors are usually dorky, awkward little ragamuffins. But to be an adult actor, they need you to look like you were sculpted by Michelangelo.

So making the transition from child actor to adult can be nearly impossible for some to whom nature was not so kind. Some actors, like Josh Saviano (Paul from Wonder Years) simply get out of the business. But some persevere and, with a little help from good genes and a personal trainer, become successful actors as adults.

Seeing the picture of Jonathan Lipnicki that Ae recently posted had me thinking about how some boys we remember as looking like this:

Can miraculously turn into guyslike this:

So I thought it would be fun to look at some of the other young actors who have grown up rather nicely. Keep in mind,...

So it's largely Doctor Quinn, Medicine Women with a male lead. Someone get Chad Allen on the phone.

PETA is upset. What, you need me to be more specific? Well, this time it's about the New York Times picture of the "sexy chicken" which has been drawing raves. But according to PETA, "It's necrophilia. It's not amusing. It's just ghastly and sickly. It's not fitting for The New York Times." After watching Mitchell and Cam go nuts on a juice fast last night, I can't help but think PETA would be less angry if they'd just eat a steak.

Another judge has ruled that Illinois is perfectly within their rights...

Fright Flick
Year:  2011Director:  Israel LunaCast:  Richard D. Curtin, Daphne Koury, Adam Kitchen, Natalie Jones, Tyler Brockington, Chad Allen

In the midst of filming a low budget slasher film sequel, the cast and crew begin to be stalked and murdered in the same manner in which the characters die in the script.

While certainly not overflowing with originality or premium, high cost production values, if one sits back and absorbs Fright Flick for what it is and was intended to be, it could very well be the most enjoyable slasher film of the year.  From the humor laced, tongue-in-cheek "film within a film" opening sequence that features tons of blood, boobs and (purposely) bad acting, more discerning viewers will believe they have a taste of what they are dealing with; the problem is that Fright Flick   However, the film manages to swiftly and effectively move beyond the over the top, parody-like opening...

Weekend Meme: Farewell Betty Ford, Gareth Thomas Wants His Mommy, and What Song Is Anderson Cooper Humming?
Farewell Betty Ford, one of the most honest and upfront First Ladies the United States has ever known. From her professed intent to share a bed with President Ford in the White House to her struggles with alcohol to her battle with breast cancer, she was always an open book and did wonders for progressive causes &#8212 all from a Republican perspective. Can you imagine that today?

Truth Wins Out has gone undercover infiltrating Rep. Michele Bachmann's husband's treatment center. After doing so, they say that there is no doubt his federally funded clinic practices conversion therapy. Sadly, in Rep. Bachmann's case, it's the use of federal funds that will upset her base.

Review: In "Hollywood to Dollywood," Cute Twins Desperately Seek Dolly Parton
Garry and Larry Lane at an idol of their idol

I first learned about Larry Lane earlier this year when I interviewed him after he and his twin brother won the campy reality show Wipeout (in terms of competition, it was, um, a wipeout). The world has long been fascinated by twins, and I figured our readers would be particularly interested in these twins, because they're gay (and because, um, they're cute).

And sure enough, you were.

At the time, Larry told me about a documentary he and twin brother Gary were working on that told their whole life story, centered around a trip they made to hand-deliver a script they'd written for their idol, Dolly Parton. In fact, they used their considerable prize money from Wipeout to buy the rights to use fourteen of Dolly's songs in the movie.

Last week, Larry sent me a copy of the movie,...

AfterElton Briefs: Loco Ninja, Ann Coulter is Speechless, Rainbow Sushi, The Gay Opera-Singing Rugby Player, and More!
Gavin Creel performs at the League of Broadway Super Friends benefit concert. Wait a minute! "Broadway Super Friends?" I.Am.So.There!

Happy 60th Birthday to Bonnie Tyler! Bonnie only hit the top forty in the U.S. a few times, which is a shame, since her voice is full of character and strength. Fun fact: When Bonnie's 1986 single "If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)" flopped on the Billboard Hot 100, songwriter Desmond Child re-worked it and turned it into Bon Jovi's mega-hit "You Give Love a Bad Name." Okay, name your Bonnie top five! Here are mine: 5. "It's a Heartache," 4. "Here She Comes," 3. "Holding Out For a Hero," 2. "Loving You's A Dirty Job (But Somebody's Got To Do It)," and #1. Gee, can you guess? Anyway, below you can see Bonnie perform that certain song with French singer Kareen Antonn, along with some General Foods...

Spork (2010)
Spork Movie Review 2
Spork (2010)
Title: Spork Director: J.B. Ghuman, Jr. Starring: Savannah Stehlin, Sydney Park, Rachel Fox, Michael Arnold, Sydney Park, Beth Grant, Oana Gregory, Chad Allen, Yeardley Smith The laboriously quirky low-fi coming-of-age comedy ‘Spork’, from writer-director J. B. Ghuman, Jr., serves as a reminder that the words “original” and “good” are not necessarily interchangeable. Heck, this low-budget offering isn’t even all that original, in fact, just constructed of parts to bait one into the false feeling that it is so. ‘Spork’ centers around a frizzy-haired, small town junior high outcast (Savannah Stehlin) — so nicknamed because her absentee mother told her before splitting that she was a hermaphrodite — and her bangle-bracleted...

Morning Meme: "Dr. Horrible" Sequel Inches Forward, Chatting With "90210"'s Freddie Smith, and James Duke Mason Is a Trailblazer
Alan Cumming has been signed to a new three year deal for The Good Wife, which probably bodes well for both his character and the show.

In what has to be more effective that mailing bars of soap to the network, Hoover has just pulled all their advertising from ABC – not just daytime – to protest the cancellation of All My Children and One Life To Live. Not that it will have any effect, but it’s a great gesture.

[TV] Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman: The Complete Seasons 1-3
A&E is re-releasing the first three seasons of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, the feel-good, family values championing series that preceded 7th Heaven by three years. The show existed in a more innocent age of network television. Even if only 13 years have passed since the show ended, Dr. Quinn would be hard-pressed to find a spot in today’s lineup. Both the character and show of Dr. Quinn extolled traditional virtues and carried a strong equality of the sexes message. Even if the story of an episode was specifically about equality, the show was so deeply rooted in that concept from the double-length pilot episode that it was impossible to separate from its core later on. In some cases a show that pushes values can feel a bit preachy, but the production values and the strength of Jane Seymour as the titular doctor helped the show evade that feel and...

The AfterElton.com Gay List
One of our favorite mantras around the AfterElton offices is “because visibility matters.” Indeed, the idea that gay and bisexual men need to be visible, both to ourselves and to the wider culture, is one of the principle reasons AfterElton.com even exists. After all, it is only by being visible to family, friends and the world that we’ve been able to overcome the stereotypes and bigotry used to justify discrimination against the Glbt community.

That quest for visibility explains why we have done so many polls including the AfterElton Hot 100, the Fifty Greatest Gay Movies, the Top 50 Gay TV Characters, and the 50 Best Gay Books. After all, it’s not as if Entertainment Weekly is going to ask gay and bisexual men which guys we think are the hottest, which movies mean the most to us or, in the case of our latest poll, which celebrities we most admire.

Interview: Gay Twin Gary Lane Reveals the Secret to His "Wipeout" Victory (and it Has to do with Dolly Parton!)
Wipeout photos credit: Mike Weaver

It’s clear that the world has long been fascinated by twins. So what are twins fascinated by?

In the case of Gary and Larry Lane, the answer is Dolly Parton.

The two have always idolized the country icon — so much so that in their latest screenplay, Full Circle, these aspiring screenwriters wrote a part especially for her. Once it was done, they then even embarked on a cross-country road-trip to hand-deliver the script to her, filming everything along the way and turning it into a documentary, Hollywood to Dollywood, that also happens to tell the life story of these 35-year-old twins, who grew up in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and who also happen to both be gay men.

How to finance the film? In addition to various acting roles, they’ve participated in a number of reality shows, which are always eager to cash in...

Fright Flick (A review - New to video this week)
2011 - 93 mins. - Not Rated

D: Israel Luna

C: Chad Allen, Richard Curtin, Todd Jenkins, Daphne Khoury, Adam Kitchen, Charles Baker, Tom Zembrod

The cast and crew of a low budget horror film is murdered by a psychotic killer who videotapes the murders and fashions them in the same way of a script that some of the crew is working on secretly.

Entertaining combination of behind the scenes spoof, valentine to Friday the 13th and all of the ripoffs that came out shortly afterwards with a dash of Scream thrown in. Fright Flick features spot on humor that sends up what happens on the set of a low budget horror film from the colorful personalities involved, to the sometimes laughable casting decisions, to the fact of how someone can have one job today and being serving another job function the next day. The film's plentiful death sequences wonderfully pay tribute...

So the day has come for you folks to take home Costas Mandylor in the final chapter of the phenomenon that is Saw! Well, at least until the inevitable reboot. Even cooler...if the jolly red-suited fatman brought you a 3D television last month, you can watch this puppy in its gory 3D glory, too.

Another franchise that is buzzing this week is the video game sequel, Dead Space 2. In addition to the game itself, you can also bring home the collector's edition, the album soundtrack, a hardcover game guide, and an animated DVD movie. That should keep you busy for a while.

Oh yeah, there are a couple of other interesting titles with some familiar faces from "True Blood", "Angel", "Buffy", and even "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman".

Exclusive Premiere: Neon Indian's "Mind Drips"
For his latest trip, Neon Indian's Alan Palomo, sought out a forgotten pre-computer age analog technology with the help of electronics wizards Lars Larsen and Edward Leckie. Together, they created this video for "Mind Drips," in which a girl slips into a hole in her bed with her big psychedelic teddy bear. After falling through some ether of oscillating waves and colors, she plummets back through her ceiling, presumably caught in some melty euphoria for eternity.

That's not the crazy wizard part though. These effects were achieved using a device invented by Larsen and Leckie called the Lzx Visionary -- an analog video synthesizer that manipulates images in the same way an audio synthesizer does for sound. "Mind Drips" is the first music video to utilize this unique machine in which all of the visual effects are recorded in real-time using "abstract pattern synthesis, video feedback, and analog compositing." If...

Fright Flick to Satirize Horror on DVD January 25th
Independent director Israel Luna (Ticked off Trannies with Knives) is taking his horror a step further in his latest film entitled Fright Flick. This film has played on the film festival circuit earlier this year, with several awards given for Luna's hard work and attention to gore. Now, the film is moving to DVD January 25th through Breaking Glass Pictures.

The film is a satire of the independent horror filmmaking business. Several cast and crew members find themselves in a real life horror situation, when murders turn up after the director yells: "cut!" The release will host an assortment of bonus features including a blooper reel, a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, and a photo gallery. More details to come.

The plot line is here:

"Fright Flick shows audiences just how cut-throat show business can be in this bloody, outrageous horror-comedy that satirizes the filmmaking industry. When the air-headed leading lady...
