Robert Alonzo

Avengers: Doomsday Crew Member Leaves Following Creative Differences
Image
New reports suggested Marvel Studios has moved from one key cog in the Avengers: Doomsday machine. Production on the next Avengers film is now happening in London, England. The film, directed by returning MCU filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo, has been branded as one of the biggest to ever come from the franchise, as classic characters from the MCU team up with legacy Marvel actors like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.

This reality-bending degree of difficulty, paired with Marvel's up-and-down output since the end of the Infinity Saga, has ratcheted up the pressure for Doomsday to perform, making every decision that much more critical. This has made the margin for error razor-thin. If something is not working, Kevin Feige and co. will not be afraid to set it aside, as the Marvel Studios brass knows just how vital the new team-up is.

A new report from insider Daniel Richtman revealed...

Avengers: Doomsday’s Reported Removal of a Key Director Behind Deadpool and The Batman Could Be a Double Edged Sword
Image
The production of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday is in full swing, but news of the release of one of its production associates, Robert Alonzo, has been reported by Marvel Studios recently. Seeing the recent performance of the MCU, it’s safe to say that they need all hands on deck for this conclusive project.

As reported by industry insider Daniel Richtman (@DanielRPK), Alonzo’s release has been reported to be due to recent unsatisfactory performance and contributions to the production of the films in the franchise. At the same time, after looking at his credentials, it feels like this decision might not be the right one.

Avengers: Doomsday Leaked Set Video Reveals First Look At A Key Multiverse Location From [Spoiler]
Image
We have another leak from the set of Avengers: Doomsday, this time confirming what most of us already suspected: the movie will take us back to the Time Variance Authority.

The Tva was a focal point of both Loki and Deadpool & Wolverine, so this isn't a shock. Some might consider it a spoiler (hence the tags above), especially as it likely means both the Multiverse's Mightiest Heroes and its greatest threat, Doctor Doom, make it to the temporal law enforcement agency.

This looks like the entrance to the Temporal Loom, meaning Loki is somewhere on the other side, still attempting to hold the Multiverse together by powering up countless branches.

"[I’m] very, very excited," Tom Hiddleston said of his return as Loki earlier this year. "It’s really remarkable that I can talk about it because mostly I’m in a position of knowing and not being able to say anything.

“He doesn’t want to hurt anyone”: Leonardo DiCaprio Was Terrorized Over Filming 1 ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ Scene That Could Become His Worst Nightmare
Image
Apart from being a highly appreciated cult classic movie, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood starring Leonardo DiCaprio has delivered a few of the most memorable scenes in the history of cinema. One among them is the intense scene involving DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton and the iconic flamethrower.

Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood | Columbia Pictures

While the flamethrower scene became memorable for its dramatic flair, considering how Leonardo DiCaprio incinerated Manson cult member Susan Atkins (Mikey Madison) to death, it wasn’t as effortless as it was portrayed. Apparently, DiCaprio’s experience filming it was far from ordinary and bordered on a nightmare for the actor.

Stunt Coordinator Revealed Leonardo DiCaprio’s Fear About Using the Flamethrower

Leonardo DiCaprio, known for his dedication to roles, found himself in a particularly unnerving situation while shooting Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Stunt Coordinator on Putting the Heart into Heart of Stone
Image
Written by Greg Rucka and Allison Schroeder, Heart of Stone is a big action film in a classic sense. Starring Gal Gadot as Rachel Stone -- a secret agent working for an A.I.-assisted global peacekeeping organization -- the film throws Stone into a globetrotting mission to save the world. In many ways, Heart of Stone embraces a kind of archetypical action that defined previous generations of action-espionage films, taking cues from the legacy of James Bond and exploring the genre from a very modern perspective.

One of the film's most compelling elements is the near-death misses and big beats that help carry the plot, boasting some particularly impressive (and largely practical) fears. During an interview with Cbr, Heart of Stone's Stunt Coordinator Jo McLaren broke down the appeal of working with a blockbuster star like Gal Gadot, the importance of having a strong script for the film,...

Zoë Kravitz Kinda Began Catwoman Training For The Batman When She Was 10 Years Old
Image
Matt Reeves' 2022 film "The Batman" featured the title character in yet another rebooted continuity, this time even darker and grittier than ever before. Batman (Robert Pattinson) was seen as a pale-skinned, stoic outsider, rarely making public appearances as Bruce Wayne, preferring to use his fists to ignite fear in the hearts of the criminal underground. He didn't smile and seemed incapable of experiencing happiness. The Riddler (Paul Dano) was reimagined to resemble the real-life Zodiac Killer, and murdered people on the regular. Gotham City was more corrupt than ever, and it is tantalizingly suggested at one point that Bruce Wayne's late father might have opened the door for massive corruption to leak into the city's legislature. Sadly, that moment is walked back.

Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz), meanwhile, is a stolid and bitter woman living in poverty with multiple cats and her at-risk girlfriend Annika (Hana Hrzic). Technically, the screenplay never...

Brad Pitt Wins Best Supporting Actor Oscar
Brad Pitt
Brad Pitt has won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his performance as stunt double Cliff Booth in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”

In a fairly competitive category, Pitt beat out fellow nominees Tom Hanks (Fred Rogers in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”), Anthony Hopkins (Pope Benedict XVI in “The Two Popes”), Al Pacino (Jimmy Hoffa in “The Irishman”), and Joe Pesci (Russell Bufalino in “The Irishman”).

This is Pitt’s fourth nomination as an actor, and his first acting Oscar win. Previously, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 1996 for “12 Monkeys,” for Best Actor in 2009 for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” for Best Actor in 2012 for “Moneyball.”

As a producer, he has three Best Picture nominations: “Moneyball” (2012), “12 Years a Slave” (2014), and “The Big Short” (2016). He won for “12 Years a Slave,” which was his first ever Oscar win.

Leonardo DiCaprio Wasn't Thrilled About Using a Flamethrower in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Leonardo DiCaprio’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood character Rick Dalton played a flamethrower-wielding Nazi hunter in one of his movies, The 14 Fists of McCluskey. There’s a whole story revolving around this flamethrower that is set up over the course of the film.

While watching the movie, DiCaprio seemed very comfortable using the the Flamethrower, but he wasn’t comfortable with it at all! You see, DiCaprio had to use a real flamethrower to really set some of his co-stars on fire. We see this scene in the trailer for the film.

DiCaprio was concerned that he would hurt someone, and it was the film’s co-stunt coordinator Robert Alonzo, who worked on easing DiCaprio’s concerns by having himself be set on fire first. Alonzo recalled in an interview with Huff Post:

“Leo was not very gung-ho with all the flamethrower stuff. Literally, he doesn’t want to hurt anyone.

Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’: Why the Brad Pitt and Bruce Lee Fight Is Confusing Moviegoers
Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”]

Of all the reimagined bits of history that round out Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” there’s one sequence that continues to divide moviegoers. The scene — a wild, on-set, hand-to-hand battle between Brad Pitt’s stuntman Cliff Booth and Mike Moh as the legendary Bruce Lee — involves plenty of elements worth unpacking, including the use of a historical figure. But some audiences are struggling to understand where it fits in the film’s narrative.

The Bruce Lee/Cliff Booth fight has become one of the film’s biggest points of controversy since “Hollywood” hit theaters late last month. Both Lee’s daughter Shannon Lee and protégé Dan Inosanto have spoken out against Tarantino for his portrayal of the martial arts and acting legend in the scene.

Actor Mike Moh, who plays Lee in the film, recently admitted that he was conflicted at first about taking on the part as written,...

The Bruce Lee Fight Scene in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Almost Saw Him Lose The Fight
There’s been a lot of talk regarding how Quentin Tarantino handled Bruce Lee in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Some people enjoyed it because it was fun, entertaining, and unexpected, while others didn’t care for how Lee was portrayed seeing it as an insult to the character.

Bruce Lee’s daughter Shannon previously talked about her dislike for how her father was portrayed saying:

“He comes across as an arrogant asshole who was full of hot air, and not someone who had to fight triple as hard as any of those people did to accomplish what was naturally given to so many others.”

“I can understand all the reasoning behind what is portrayed in the movie. I understand that the two characters are antiheroes and this is sort of like a rage fantasy of what would happen… and they’re portraying a period of time that clearly...

Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
Leonardo DiCaprio Was Scared to Film ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ Flamethrower Scenes
Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”]

Few moments in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” are as memorable as when Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton gets a flamethrower and incinerates Manson cult member Susan Atkins (Mikey Madison) to death. Rick has a flamethrower in his possession due to his role in the WWII movie “The 14 Fists of McCluskey,” a scene from which is shown early on in “Hollywood” that memorably features Rick’s character burning a group of Nazis. While Rick effortlessly wields the flamethrower, DiCaprio was not as gung-ho about it as his onscreen character.

In an interview with HuffPo, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” stunt coordinator Robert Alonzo says DiCaprio was a little freaked out about using the flamethrower himself and burning up actors on set. Alonzo said he “has a lot of experience with fire-burning” after working as a stunt coordinator for 23 years, so he tried to ease DiCaprio...

Bruce Lee in Fist of Fury (1972)
Brad Pitt Objected to Extended Bruce Lee Fight Scene in ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ Script
Bruce Lee in Fist of Fury (1972)
When it comes to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” one scene that is proving to be most controversial is the fight between Bruce Lee (Mike Moh) and Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Bruce Lee’s daughter and protégé have already spoken out against the film, condemning Quentin Tarantino for his portrayal of the martial arts and acting legend. In an interview with HuffPo, “Hollywood” stunt coordinator Robert Alonzo reveals Tarantino originally wrote a much longer version of the Bruce Lee fight scene.

In the film, Bruce Lee challenges Cliff to a three-round fight on the set of “The Green Hornet” after Cliff insults him by laughing when he says his fists have been registered as lethal weapons. Lee quickly wins the first round by knocking Cliff to the ground, then Cliff wins round two by launching Lee into the side of a car. Just before the two men can engage in the final round,...

Is it Time for Oscars to Add a Stunt Category?
Melissa R. Stubbs
Every movie nominated this year for a best picture Oscar employed a stunt coordinator. Yet not one of these individuals will have the opportunity to receive Academy Award recognition.

The Oscars acknowledge categories ranging across multiple disciplines that support a film’s story and visual dynamics. But the stunt department’s contributions remain unsung. This might be due to misperceptions about what stunt performers actually do these days. Stunt coordinator Melissa R. Stubbs (“Tully”) has been a voting member of the Academy since 2007. When she began her career, stunt actors were viewed as adrenaline junkies with “Kodak courage” — her term for the desire to do the biggest, most dangerous stunt sequences just for the glory of having it captured on film.

In a world of pricey digital effects, stunt departments present themselves differently now. Their mission: to advance the narrative by means of repeatable, safe sequences that are also budget-friendly.

Director Ed Zwick Talks About Tom Cruise and The Action of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
This Friday, Tom Cruise returns to theaters in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, a sequel to his 2012 action thriller. This time, he works to clear the name of a government colleague (How I Met Your Mother star Cobie Smulders), gets embroiled in a conspiracy, and discovers that he may have a teenage daughter he never knew about.

I had the opportunity to speak with co-writer/director Ed Zwick by phone about the new film, including bringing his more humanist touch to the franchise, how he went about topping the action scenes from the first movie, what he thinks Cruise responds to about working with him (this is their second collaboration, following 2003's The Last Samuari), and more.

GeekTyrant: Thanks for speaking with me. Let me start with this: I heard reports that Chris McQuarrie (who directed the first film) was initially going to direct this movie before he slid into...
