Full Moon is giving Blood Dolls a black & white noir release, plus a Blu-ray release

Last year, Charles Band’s company Full Moon announced that they were launching a new production label called Pulp Noir, which would focus on “edgier, weirder, darker horror and dark fantasy films.” Two Pulp Noir movies, Quadrant and Death Streamer, have since made their way through production – and while those movies were initially released in color, all of the Pulp Noir movies will also get black & white “noir” releases, so there are both color and black & white versions of Quadrant and Death Streamer available on the Full Moon Features streaming service. While we wait for more Pulp Noir movies to be made, Band has started going through the Full Moon library to give some of their older films the black & white / noir treatment. This noir series, which is expected to consist of at least a dozen films, got started with a black & white version of the 1984 sci-fi thriller Christmas classic Trancers.

Ghoulies II (1988) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Intro: The 1985 film Ghoulies didn’t put enough focus on the title characters. The little, demonic monsters were overshadowed by occult rituals and other horrific events. If you really want to see the ghoulies in action, you have to turn to the sequel, a film designed to let them live up to their full potential. And to let them wreak havoc in a carnival. Ghoulies II is a fun practical effects monster mash that could have only come out of the ’80s, and it’s time for it to be Revisited.

Set-up: Internet trivia will tell you that the first Ghoulies had a budget of five million dollars, but it was closer to five hundred thousand. Directed by Luca Bercovici, who wrote the script with Jefery Levy, it was meant to be a dark, black magic horror film, but Bercovici decided to add in more humor once he saw the ghoulies.

Dungeons of Ecstasy, Prompt, and Models vs. Werewolves in the works at Full Moon
Charles Band at an event for Puppet Master (1989)
A few months back, we heard that Full Moon founder Charles Band was gearing up to shoot a paranormal romance called The Lost Girl’s Private Diary in Italy – but either the title or plans changed along the way, because on the latest episode of his YouTube show Full Moon Universe, Band revealed that he has just wrapped filming a thriller called Dungeons of Ecstasy in Italy. He also mentioned that Full Moon will soon be heading into production on movies called Prompt and Models vs. Werewolves!

Speaking about Dungeons of Ecstasy while sharing some behind-the-scenes video and footage from the movie, Band said, “I got back a week ago from Italy, where I had a fantastic time shooting a really cool show called Dungeons of Ecstasy. I think the title kind of sums it up, but what’s different about this feature is I shot it both as a...

George Wendt dead: The Cheers star was 76
George Wendt
It’s very sad news today. George Wendt, best known for playing Norm Peterson throughout all 11 seasons of Cheers, is dead at 76. His family confirmed that he died peacefully in his sleep at home.

“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,” a rep for Wendt said in a statement. “He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.“

Along with Ted Danson and Rhea Perlman, Wendt was the only member of the Cheers cast to appear in every single episode. Norm drank a lot of beer during the series, but the beverage that Wendt was actually drinking was a warm, flat, non-alcoholic drink that was layered with salt to create the foamy head. Sounds… awful. “There I was slamming those down for a whole day. It not only tastes disgusting, I was...

‘Seedpeople’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Sam Hennings, Andrea Roth, Dane Witherspoon, Bernard Kates, Holly Fields, John Mooney, Anne Betancourt | Written by Charles Band, Jackson Barr | Directed by Peter Manoogian

Released during the high point in Full Moon’s relationship with Paramount Pictures, Seedpeople was heavily advertised on its original UK release back in 1992, with ads appearing in many of the horror magazines of the period – including full page ads on the back and inside cover of The Dark Side (which ran for months on end I recall). The film itself wasn’t as successful as the other notable franchises in the Full Moon stable, with many reviews at the time noting that the film was a rip-off of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and essentially that’s what the movie is: a tongue-in-cheek alien invasion flick that echoes the feel of low-budget sci-fi flicks of the 1950s.

Directed by Peter Manoogian – who worked on...

Charles Band’s Lost Tony Todd Film ‘Cutter’s Club’ Now on Tubi
Image
Back in 2005, B-movie maven Charles Band directed genre icon Tony Todd in Cutter’s Club, but the indie horror movie ran into financial trouble at the end of production and it never saw the light of day.

20 years later, in the wake of Todd’s passing, Band rescued the lost negative and completed the film, which is now streaming exclusively on Tubi via Full Moon Features.

Creatures, carnage, and macabre malpractice ensue when a pair of medical students get involved in a secret society of surgery fetishists and monster makers called the Cutter’s Club, overseen by the maddest of doctors.

The script is written by Neal Marshall Stevens under the pseudonym Benjamin Carr.

The film features 35mm cinematography from Mac Ahlberg and special effects by John Carl Buechler, both of whom have since passed.

The 10 Worst Horror Movie Villains Ranked
Image
When a horror movie villain is good, they can make even the worst movies watchable if not enjoyable. When they're great, they can become some of the biggest entertainment icons in film history. But when they're bad? Oh, bother...

From cliched ghost children to cheap cash-grab-creatures using intellectual property in the public domain, the last few decades have introduced some truly horrific (in the bad way) additions to the genre that prove not every ghoul is cut out for the silver scream. We braved popular blockbusters, maligned remakes, and indie cult classics, scrutinizing the headlining monsters and murderers of each to assess their originality, design, and how they support their respective stories overall. We found a few truly terrible films were nearly rescued by an antagonist that met these standards with flying colors (our compliments to young Brahms).

On the other hand, when they failed to do so, the film couldn't be totally saved,...

Charles Band at an event for Puppet Master (1989)
Of the hundreds of pieces of entertainment Full Moon founder Charles Band has brought into the world, one of my favorites is the 1984 sci-fi thriller classic Trancers, which also happens to be one of my favorite Christmas movies. Directed by Band from a screenplay by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, Trancers has the following synopsis: Welcome to Angel City, 2247. Joe Bob Briggs joins Full Moon’s second Church of Chills event
Image
Back in October, Charles Band, founder of the legendary entertainment company Full Moon, will be hosting an event called Church of Chills Live!, a revival of the classic Full Moon Roadshow experience, at the Cleveland, Ohio church that Full Moon recently purchased. There was a screening at Death Streamer, plus appearances by special guests Andrew Divoff (the Wishmaster himself) and Dana DeLorenzo of Ash vs. Evil Dead, along with Robin Sydney, Full Moon’s own “First Lady.” Recently, Band announced that a second Church of Chills event will be held on April 5th, with the festivities including a screening of the uncut version of the original Puppet Master. We’ve previously heard that genre icon Barbara Crampton, who makes a cameo appearance in Puppet Master, will be one of the special guests, along with Diana Prince, a.k.a. Darcy the Mail Girl from The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs and Robin Sydney.

The Lost Girl’s Private Diary: Full Moon’s paranormal romance starts filming in Italy next month
Image
Charles Band’s company Full Moon has been delivering wild, crazy, entertaining films for over thirty-five years now – and last year, they launched a new production label called Pulp Noir, the idea being to focus on “edgier, weirder, darker horror and dark fantasy films.” So far, two Pulp Noir movies have made their way out into the world, Quadrant and Death Streamer, and on the new episode of his YouTube show Full Moon Universe, Band revealed that the third Pulp Noir movie, The Lost Girl’s Private Diary, is set to start filming at the end of February!

The Lost Girl’s Private Diary is a paranormal romance that Band describes as being in the vein of his 1990 movie Meridian. As with Meridian, Band will be directing this one himself, and here’s the official synopsis: Lily is a “Lost Girl”, a term given to those women that have been...

My Little Eye (2002) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
This is the fictional story of five strangers picked to live in a house and have their lives taped to find out what happens when people stop being polite and start getting murdered… My Little Eye. And if you haven’t seen this one, it’s the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.

Reality shows are nearly unavoidable these days, but back in the ‘90s they were still rare. Aside from MTV’s The Real World and episodes of Cops, we hadn’t been exposed to much reality programming yet. And when word started leaking out about the development of shows like Big Brother and Survivor, they sounded odd. A little twisted, potentially dangerous. Big Brother was offering the chance to watch its contestants on 24/7 live streams. Survivor was taking its contestants out to isolated locations and leaving them to provide basic survival necessities for themselves. While the concept of Big Brother just seemed weird,...

Trancers: Yes, It’s a Christmas Movie
Image
Last Updated on December 26, 2024

Action fans have plenty of choices when it comes to Christmas viewing. You can watch John McClane take down bad guys at Nakatomi Plaza and Dulles International Airport in Die Hard and Die Hard 2; root for Rambo as he destroys a small town in First Blood; thrill at the sight of Marion “Cobra” Cobretti taking on the Night Slasher; see James Bond deal with love, loss, and Blofeld in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service; have a Shane Black marathon, starting with the Martin Riggs / Roger Murtaugh pairing Lethal Weapon; watch Houston police officer Jack Caine battle an extraterrestrial drug dealer in I Come in Peace (a.k.a. Dark Angel); take in a viewing of Batman Returns… the list goes on and on. But one movie that doesn’t get enough credit for being a sci-fi action Christmas classic is director Charles Band’s 1984 film Trancers…...

A Goofier ‘Blade Runner,’ ‘Trancers’ (1984) Delivers a Very Techno-Thriller Christmas with Helen Hunt
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

For December 2024, we’re celebrating the end of the year with a stocking full of Strange Holiday TV Specials and Seasonal Midnight Movies.

First, read the Bait: a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film. Then, try the Bite: a breakdown of the movie’s ending, impact, and any other spoilers you’d want.

The Bait: “Blade Runner” Meets “Die Hard” Meets Ancestry.com

Let’s stop asking if “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie — and start asking how many other holiday cult classics we’re missing out on with such narrow-minded nonsense. In “Trancers,” a hyper-stylish pursuit through a spunky sci-fi world sees Trooper Jack Deth (Tim Thomerson) travel from the 23rd century to 1984 while hunting down his arch-nemesis, Martin Whistler (Michael Stefani).

Also known as “Future Cop,” this...

The Best Holiday Midnight Movies (and a TV Special!) to Stream This December
Image
Welcome to IndieWire After Dark, where we pick a new theme for our midnight movie programming every month!

Join us on Friday nights (and special occasions!) to explore some of the strangest fringe films available at any hour in the Streaming Age.

The lights are twinkling and the temperature is dropping. But in December 2024, the merry-making vibes are distinctly and resolutely… off. Lean into that discomfort with some Holiday Midnight Movie (and TV!) Madness as we celebrate a weird year.

After several particularly stressful months in current events, the pre-Christmas season feels oddly foreboding. That might be a welcome reprieve for those of us who are usually glum during the holidays (just me?), but the blues can sneak up on anyone. Whether you’re battling a bickering family or dealing with loneliness, weirdo cinema has the power to fight your funk with more funk.

When in doubt, clown it out!

Is This Who Days of Our Lives’ Dr Rolf Is Based on?
Image
Since 1997, Days of Our Lives’ resident mad scientist, Dr. Wilhelm Rolf, has been on hand to resurrect the dead, brainwash Salemites, and more. Originally played by William Utay, the part was later recast in 2022 with Richard Wharton as the devious doctor. If either iteration of the demented scientist seems familiar, that’s probably because he resembles a character actor who starred in several horror classics.

A Puppet Master Like Dr. Rolf

Guy Rolfe was a British actor who appeared in films since 1937 and starred in several classics, including Ivanhoe (1952), The Barbarians (1960), and King of Kings (1961). But it was his role as the title character in William Castle’s Mr. Sardonicus in 1961 that made horror fans take notice. In the film, he played a man whose face froze in a creepy and disturbing grin.

He appeared in several subsequent TV shows, including The Champions (1968), which starred General Hospital’s Stuart Damon...

‘Death Streamer’ Movie Ending Explained And Recap: Were Alex And Co. Able To Kill Arturo Valinor?
Image
For better or worse, after producing some low-budget experimental horror classics, Charles Band has dominated the niche B horror VOD movie genre for the last few decades. At this point, it doesn’t matter whether most of them are generally regarded as exploitative shlock or not; lasting so long in the ever-changing entertainment business itself is a credible feat. The latest release from his Full Moon Features production is Death Streamer, which introduces a tech-savvy vampire who uses virtual space to create his hunting ground on the physical plane. If this premise feels interesting enough to spend seventy minutes sitting through barely funny, caricature-ish dialogue and acting and go through recurrent gratuitous nudity that is just there for no reason, then you surely have the “refined” acquired taste for Band’s works. Something I feel should be mentioned is that the narrative, however little there was of it, displayed a clever sense of self-awareness,...

Death Streamer Review: Full Moon’s Second Pulp Noir Release
Image
Plot: When a vampire uses technologically advanced glasses to live stream his kills, he gains a large online following – and catches the attention of a trio of supernatural investigators who set out to stop him.

Review: Earlier this year, Full Moon founder Charles Band announced that his company was launching a new production label called Pulp Noir, with the focus being on “edgier, weirder, darker horror and dark fantasy films.” They also set up a Patreon account where fans can subscribe and show their support for the company while getting a behind-the-scenes look at the making of these films. The first movie in the Pulp Noir line, a female serial killer story called Quadrant, was released in August, with a black & white release following in September – and now that October is upon us, so is the second movie in the Pulp Noir line-up, the vampire story Death Streamer. Horror Puppet: Full Moon founder Charles Band is working on a second autobiography
Image
With a career that stretches back 50 years, Charles Band is one of the most well-known names in genre filmmaking. The head of companies like Empire Pictures and Full Moon Features, Band has over 400 producing credits, nearly 90 directing credits, and over 60 writing credits. A few years ago, he started telling the story of what it has been like bringing all of that entertainment into the world with his autobiography Confessions of a Puppetmaster: A Hollywood Memoir of Ghouls, Guts, and Gonzo Filmmaking (you can pick up a copy at This Link) – and now he has revealed that he’s currently working on a second autobiography, titled Horror Puppet!

Band told PopGeeks, “I don’t want to step back (from filmmaking) until I’m forced to, by end of life. I enjoy what I do and, yeah, I’ve done it for a long time. Sometimes I feel like I’m the...

‘The Primevals’ Review – Long Unfinished Stop Motion Movie Finally Releases 45 Years Later
Image
In a time where CGI and other digital technology reign as the kings of cinema special effects, Full Moon Features has released a film with old school SFX and a production timeline nearly half a century-long, spanning from conceptualization to release, with The Primevals.

And this timeline length is no exaggeration. The road to this film’s release began with plot elements used in the 1968 short film Raiders of the Stone Ring by writer-director David Allen (Puppet Master II and The Howling) that evolved into a full-length film script by 1975 and then produced by Charles Band in 1978. Alas, pre-production saw some funding issues surface that postponed the project until filming commenced again in 1994, before finally being completed and released in 2023.

After learning of the existence of Yeti when one is killed in Nepal, Dr. Claire Collier (Juliet Mills) and her student Matt Connor (Richard Joseph Paul) head to the Himalayas to investigate its origin.

‘Quadrant’ Review
Image
Stars: Rickard Claeson, Emma Reinagel, Shannon Barnes, Christian Carrigan | Written by C. Courtney Joyner | Directed by Charles Band

Low-budget veteran, and all-around B-movie legend, Charles Band, makes his 400th career film in Quadrant – a tale of virtual reality, Jack the Ripper and nefarious scientist-types. At only 73 minutes long, Quadrant wastes little time in introducing us to our shady antagonists and its virtual reality “hook”. Scientists, Harry and Meg, have developed a psychological treatment in the Quadrant helmet, a virtual reality device that allows you to “live” your fears and confront them, in a seemingly safe environment. Enter Erin, a Jack the Ripper superfan, whose apartment resembles an adoring shrine to old bloody Jack. What could go wrong….?

As a premise, Quadrant stands out for its genre-hopping sci-fi/slasher leanings. Owing a debt to The Lawnmower Man, with a dash of Freddy Krueger and a sprinkling of The Matrix, I really...
