HBO’s Steven Spielberg WWII Classic Is Leaving Netflix In September 2025
Image
HBO’s Band of Brothers, the 2001 limited series by the esteemed filmmaker Steven Spielberg, will be leaving Netflix in September 2025 (via What’s On Netflix). Set during World War II, this drama portrays the devastation of war as we follow ‘Easy Company,’ the 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. Starring David Schwimmer in a significant role, a surprising departure from his stint as Ross Geller in the sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S., the show was released to universal acclaim.

Boasting a 9.4 IMDb rating, this show sits atop a mountain of other popular series, such as The Sopranos and The Wire (via IMDb), which, at the time of their release, were widely regarded as the crème de la crème of television. Created by two veterans of the industry – Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks – Band of Brothers would go on to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries in 2002.

The 10 Best HBO Miniseries, Ranked
Image
HBO has long been a cornerstone of consistently compelling and well-made programming, whether it's movies, documentaries, TV shows, or, perhaps the best of both worlds, a miniseries. The premium network is well known for their particularly impressive roster of miniseries since its inception in 1972, and they've continued to up the ante with what they've produced even in just the last five years. In fact, it seems like every year there's at least one major miniseries achievement for the channel.

There have been so many excellent series over time that it actually seems quite daunting to choose only 10 in a list of the best HBO miniseries, but honestly, if we didn't, this list would just end up encompassing quite literally most of the HBO miniseries catalog. Plus, it can at times feel impossible to put them in a definitive order because they're all so good, but someone's gotta do it.

Here are the 10 best HBO miniseries,...

“The show could have done a better job”: Band of Brothers Is Almost Flawless but Tom Hanks Is to Be Blamed for Its Worst Mistake
Image
The HBO series Band of Brothers paid tribute to the American soldiers who were in the Second World War through the eyes of Easy Company’s 101st Airborne Division. Produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, who continued their association after Saving Private Ryan, the series was widely appreciated for its focus on American troops.

While the show was instrumental in highlighting the troops’ contributions and sacrifice, it was not entirely historically accurate. Based on the book by Stephen Ambrose, who reportedly collected testimonials and interviews from Easy Company veterans, many elements of the series took poetic licence, Tom Hanks signing off on it.

Every Band of Brothers Show, Ranked
Image
When Band of Brothers was released, it came just three years after the dominant success of Saving Private Ryan. The show debuted in 2001 and showed an extended and quality look at the reality of life in the heart of World War II. Easy Company's journey quickly became a mainstay on HBO, as the prestige show drew audiences in droves. Since its release, it has remained in a class of its own and continues to influence war movies and shows today. Yet, despite originally being one-of-a-kind, other shows have joined its universe.

Stephen E. Ambrose's book inspired Band of Brothers, but the story of Easy Company could not be the end of such a brilliant series. Masters of the Air and The Pacific both debuted in the aftermath. The Pacific premiered in 2010, while Masters was released on Apple TV+ in 2024. All were based on real-world American warriors during World War II,...

7 Biggest Things The Band Of Brothers Show Changed From The Book
Image
The 2001 war drama Band of Brothers is well-known for its accurate depiction of World War II, yet the show makes some changes from the book it's based on. Created by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the 10-episode mini-series tells the story of the real-life men of Easy Company, who landed in France on D-Day and fought valiantly throughout Europe until the end of the war. The Band of Brothers show is based on Stephen E. Ambrose's 1992 non-fiction book of the same name but made some of its own creative decisions.

Band of Brothers changed TV forever war movies and TV have long been part of Hollywood, but this show was one of the first to dial in on accuracy and true stories. How Steven Spielberg's The Pacific Battles Are "Dead On Right" Explained By Historian
Image
World War II historian John McManus dives into The Pacific's depictions of combat in the Pacific Theater, explaining why they rate highly among on-screen portrayals of the conflict. Produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman, the HBO miniseries depicted the journeys of three United States marines by drawing on the memoirs of Eugene Sledge, Robert Leckie, and Chuck Tatum. Unflinching and honest in its portrayal of the conflict, The Pacific has earned widespread critical acclaim.

Over fourteen years after it first aired, The Pacific has been revised by McManus, a professor of military history, and Insider in a new expert reaction video.

Focusing on the fifth and sixth episodes of the miniseries, the historian quickly praised both its depictions of the equipment utilized by the Marine Corps, as well as the context behind some of the series' battles. He said:

10 Unforgivable Band Of Brothers Mistakes That Get Real History Very Wrong
Image
Given the acclaim and continued popularity of the World War II miniseries, there is still the question of, "How accurate is Band of Brothers in its depiction of these real-life soldiers and the battles they fought?" The series is based on Stephen E. Ambrose's book of the same name, which compiles interviews, stories, and testimonies from the real soldiers who were part of Easy Company. In this way, the accuracy of Band of Brothers can be attributed to the actual men who lived the events occurring on-screen.

Although Band of Brothers is famous for its accuracy, it still doesn't get everything right. World War II buffs have certainly poked holes through the series' uniforms, weapons, and other small military details. However, beyond the minutiae, there are also a few major mistakes that Band of Brothers made in their portrayal. These mishaps are serious because of how they misrepresent certain...

How Historically Accurate Is 'Band of Brothers'?
Image
The epic HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, based on the book of the same name by Stephen E. Ambrose, is one of the most acclaimed World War II projects of all time. It follows the soldiers of E ("Easy") Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division from their start in 1942 up to the end of World War II. The series, which was executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman (who also produced Apple TV+'s Masters of the Air), has been rightly praised as being historically accurate with a realism and intensity that brought the war to vivid life onscreen. However, that doesn't mean that it isn't without its inaccuracies. Most are minor, like saluting with the left hand and not the right in one instance, but there are also some major inaccuracies to be found in Band of Brothers.

Band of Brothers: Where the Cast is Today
Image
Band of Brothers was a groundbreaking HBO achievement, showcasing deep, character-driven storytelling in a war setting. The series, based on a true story, follows "Easy" Company's intense journey during WWII, highlighting bravery and sacrifice. Many well-known actors, like Damian Lewis and Michael Fassbender, got their start in Band of Brothers, showcasing exceptional talent.

Band of Brothers was an incredible achievement by HBO; one that might’ve started the prestige TV era, proving that with good actors and scripts, episodic television can give more time and depth to all of its characters than a two-hour movie ever could. It’s one of the best HBO shows of all time, and one as ambitious as tricky, to the point that writer John Orloff admits they were worried if the disparity of points of view could work.

“Steered Us Back”: How Masters Of The Air Is More Like Band Of Brothers Than The Pacific
Image
Masters of the Air producer Gary Goetzman says that the series is more similar to Band of Brothers than The Pacific. Unlike Masters of the Air and Band of Brothers, The Pacific is "much more anthological." Like its predecessors, Masters of the Air is based on a non-fiction book and tells a harrowing WW2 story, this time with a focus on the Air Force.

Masters of the Air producer Gary Goetzman explains why the series is more like Band of Brothers than The Pacific. Based on the non-fiction book of the same name, Masters of the Air is an Apple TV+ miniseries that tells the story of WW2’s 100th Bombardment Group, aka the Bloody Hundredth. Masters of the Air’s cast includes Barry Keoghan, Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Rafferty Law, Elliot Warren, and David Shields.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Goetzman discusses why Masters of the Air...

‘Masters of the Air’ Producer Reveals “Biggest Problem” They Faced
Image
Apple TV’s new World War II epic Masters of the Air has faced a very steep climb to take flight, creatively speaking.

First, it had to live up to the legacy of its extraordinary predecessor, HBO’s 2001 limited series Band of Brothers, which some consider to be their all-time favorite war “movie.” BoB‘s successor, 2010’s The Pacific, showed, if anything, what a high bar the original set. And then there are the challenges of pulling off an air-war epic — it’s inherently tougher (for reasons we’ll get into), and potentially far more expensive (all those special effects shots), than infantry stories. Perhaps that’s why it’s taken more than a decade for Masters of the Air — which is based on Donald L. Miller’s book — to make the journey from concept to screen.

Masters of the Air executive producer Gary Goetzman is a co-founder of executive...

Masters of the Air TV Review
Image
Plot: Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

Review: In 2001, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg produced one of the greatest television series ever. Based on the book by Stephen E. Ambrose, Band of Brothers chronicled...

Band Of Brothers' Buck Compton "Goof" Was Actually Deliberate (& The Finale Proves It)
Image
Buck Compton's grenade throw in Band of Brothers was deliberate, not a production mistake, as many initially thought. He used his baseball skills to time the explosion perfectly. Compton's baseball history was subtly referenced in the show's finale. He played catcher during a game of baseball, highlighting his background as an All-American player. In addition to his military service, Compton had a successful career in law enforcement and even became an associate justice of the California Courts of Appeal. His baseball skills proved advantageous in the war.

One Band of Brothers scene featuring Lynn "Buck" Compton, which was originally thought to be a production "goof," was actually a clever callback to the real soldier's history, and the finale confirmed it. While Band of Brothers left out some true story details, one critical aspect of Compton's life outside WW2 was subtly referenced. Neal McDonough portrayed the Lieutenant of Easy Company,...

Friends Oddly Foreshadowed David Schwimmer’s Band Of Brothers Character 2 Years Before The War Show Aired
Image
Ross's comment in a Friends episode unknowingly foreshadowed David Schwimmer's role in Band of Brothers. In the World War II miniseries, Schwimmer played Captain Sobel, a character who is disliked and shown to be cowardly. Schwimmer's performance as Sobel is still impressive, even though the character has become controversial in recent years.

Two years before David Schwimmer starred in Band of Brothers, one Ross storyline in Friends season 5 indirectly foreshadowed the actor's appearance in the World War II miniseries. Schwimmer's breakout role was playing nerdy paleontologist Ross Geller, one of the six main characters on the hit sitcom Friends. Schwimmer starred in Friends for its entire 10-season run from 1994 to 2004.

During this time, he also starred in one of Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks's World War II TV shows, Band of Brothers. Based on Stephen E. Ambrose's book of the same name, the HBO miniseries follows the...

Band Of Brothers: Is Anyone From Easy Company Alive Today?

None of the original members of Easy Company from HBO's Band of Brothers are still alive today, but two members depicted in the series, Ed Shames and Bradford Freeman, passed away recently. Masters Of The Air's Austin Butler Focus Has To Be A Marketing Trick, Or It'll Lose What Made Band Of Brothers Special
Image
The trailer for Masters of the Air heavily features Austin Butler, likely due to his recent success as Elvis Presley. This smart marketing strategy could draw viewers who may not be interested in a war drama, but are curious about Butler's performance. Band of Brothers' strength lay in its ensemble cast, with multiple characters receiving their own storylines and moments to shine. Masters of the Air should follow suit and give ample screen time to its other talented actors, without overshadowing them with Butler's character. As a companion series to Band of Brothers, Masters of the Air should aim to replicate the show's handling of characters and capture the spirit of its predecessors. While Butler may attract viewers, fans of the previous series expect the same attention to detail and authentic storytelling of soldiers who were willing to sacrifice everything.

The trailer for Masters of the Air focuses heavily...

Saving Private Ryan: What Really Happened to this Movie?
Image
Today is Veteran’s Day, and to mark the occasion we’re doing to dip into the true story that inspired one of the greatest war movies ever made. Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan is commonly referred to as one of the most effective war movies ever made. Released in July 1998, Private Ryan was quickly lauded for its brutal depiction of life in combat, with most people singling out its stunning, harrowing recreation of the invasion of Omaha Beach on June 6th, 1944. The film went on gross a surprising $481 million worldwide and won five Oscars, including Best Director for Spielberg, who dedicated the movie to his father, a World War II vet. While the film of course took many a page from the history books to tell its gripping tale, the overall story – about a platoon of soldiers dispatched to recover a young private after three of his brothers...

Band Of Brothers: Why Easy Company Have Spades On Their Helmets
Image
The spades on the helmets in Band of Brothers were a real-life detail that helped with historical accuracy and visually identifying soldiers. The symbols on soldiers' helmets, such as spades, diamonds, hearts, and clubs, represented different regiments and aided in regrouping and identifying one another in battle. The attention to detail in Band of Brothers, including small details like helmet symbols and military tactics, added to the show's realism and the authenticity of its depiction of WWII.

Throughout Band of Brothers, each member of Easy Company can be seen with a spade on their helmet, and there's a valid historical reason for this detail. The HBO miniseries Band of Brothers first aired back in 2001, based on Stephen E. Ambrose's non-fiction book of the same name. Following the men of "Easy" Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Divison, Band of Brothers chronicles the men's journey...

Band Of Brothers: Did They Really Liberate A Concentration Camp?
Image
The concentration camp scene in Band of Brothers is based on a real event, although the show takes some fictional liberties in depicting it. Easy Company, along with the 12th Armored Division, discovered the camp, which was part of the Kaufering complex in Landsberg. The US Army 101st Airborne Division found around 500 dead prisoners and ordered the local German population to bury the bodies, reflecting the reality of the liberation of concentration camps.

In Band Of Brothers, Easy Company discovers a concentration camp that has been abandoned by the German military and frees the poor souls inside, but did Easy Company find a concentration camp in real life? Was Band Of Brothers' Sobel That Awful In Real Life?
Image
Captain Sobel's portrayal in Band of Brothers as a cruel and petty drill instructor is accurate, but it may not capture all the nuances of his real-life counterpart. While the men of Easy Company heavily disliked Captain Sobel for his harsh treatment, many credit him with preparing them for the war and attribute their survival to his training. In real life, Captain Sobel became an accountant after the war, raised a family, and eventually became estranged from them. His actions at Currahee were defended by some soldiers who were trained by him.

Much of the focus on Captain Herbert Sobel takes place in Band of Brothers episode 1, "Currahee,...
