The Conjuring's Worst-Rated Spin-Off On IMDb Had A Huge Impact On The Series
Image
2013's "The Conjuring" kickstarted a new horror cinematic behemoth. In addition to the mainline series, where the timeline can get a little confusing, there are a ton of spin-offs like "Annabelle" and "The Nun" that have all been released to varying quality. But when it comes to the worst film in "The Conjuring" franchise, one is head and shoulders above (below?) all the others.

It doesn't matter if you look at IMDb's ratings or /Film's review, "The Curse of La Llorona" is widely considered the worst of the bunch. Linda Cardellini plays a mother trying to save her two children from a malevolent entity trying to steal them away. It's a decent enough premise, but sadly, the execution is severely lacking, which is undoubtedly why it currently stands at a 5.3/10 rating on IMDb with 62,000 audience votes cast.

Even "The Conjuring" franchise as a whole seemed to want to distance itself from "La Llorona.

Image
M3GAN, Annabelle, and Ma will return to theaters nationwide for one night only over three consecutive weeks for Blumhouse‘s second annual Halfway to Halloween Festival.

Gerard Johnstone‘s M3GAN kicks off the event on April 30. This could a good way to revisit the killer doll before M3GAN 2.0 opens on June 27 — if you can stand a theater full of people encouraged to be on their phone during the movie.

You see, M3GAN will be augmented by Meta’s Movie Mate second screen experience. Moviegoers can Dm M3GAN on Instagram to interact with the chat bot and receive never-before-seen content, trivia, and behind the scenes info on the film in real time.

10 Quirkiest Male Anime Love Interests, Ranked
Image
Not all anime love interests are dramatic tsunderes or stoic knights in shining armor. Sometimes a male character's unique sense of humor sets him apart to his love interest and to the audience. These characters are creative individuals with eccentric ways of thinking and conducting themselves.

Sometimes, on paper, a character seems like a terrible love interest, but there's something about them and the way they're written that makes them special. Conventional beauty and charm can be nice in a well-written character, but the more eccentric and goofy characters are truly engaging. Quirky love interests go against the grain, they are flawed, and that's what makes them refreshing and endearing.

When Trevor Belmont, heir to the monster-hunting Belmont house, is first introduced in Castlevania, he seems sloppy and nihilistic. He's talented in a fight, but that's not what...

Very Bad Trailer for Horror Movie 'Spin The Bottle' Based on the Game
Image
"That kid and his family brought nothing but death to our town." Paramount has unveiled an official trailer for a horror movie called Spin The Bottle, which is being released on VOD in October next month - so they don't miss out on horror month. This is like one of those fake parody movies you see in a comedy and laugh that they actually could make it. A spin the bottle movie?! This is as a hilarious dumb as a Hungry Hungry Hippos horror. The story of a group of teens in small town Texas who unleash a deadly force after playing the famous game in an abandoned house where a grisly massacre once took place. Isn't this plot the same as every other horror film? Starring Tanner Stine, Kaylee Kaneshiro, Tony Amendola, Ryan Whitney, Hal Cumpston, Angela Halili, Samantha Cormier, with Ali Larter and Barbarian's Justin Long. This looks remarkably bad,...

The Conjuring 4: Final installment gets 2025 release, plus Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein movie gets bumped up
Image
Paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) are suiting up to investigate what could be their final case. Warner Bros. has set a September 5, 2025 release date for The Conjuring 4, which is said to be the final installment of the main series.

The untitled Conjuring movie is set to be directed by Michael Chaves, who is no stranger to the franchise. He helmed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, as well as The Nun II. Chaves also directed The Curse of La Llorona, which is often mistakenly included in the franchise. While the film has several notable connections to The Conjuring Universe (including an Annabelle easter egg and Tony Amendola reprising his role as Father Perez), Chaves confirmed last year that it’s not part of the franchise.

“There’s so much debate about it and I think I’ve played coy in the past,” Chaves said.

The Conjuring 4 Release Date Revealed For Final Mainline Horror Movie
Image
The Conjuring 4 has been set for a September 5, 2025 release. The next installment in the hit horror franchise will also be the final mainline movie, with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson returning as Ed and Lorraine Warren and franchise vet Michael Chaves directing. Though it will avoid potential competition from The Black Phone 2 and Mortal Kombat 2, The Conjuring 4's new release date will make for an early horror season box office battle.

With over a decade under its belt, The Conjuring 4 will bring the mainline horror franchise to a close, and the release date has now been revealed for the fourquel.

Variety has brought word that Warner Bros. has set The Conjuring 4 to hit theaters on September 5, 2025. The news also came as the studio also announced that Maggie Gyllenhaal's Frankenstein adaptation The Bride will be moving up by one week, now releasing at the end of September 2025 rather...

‘New Life’ Review
Image
Stars: Hayley Erin, Sonya Walger, Tony Amendola, Jeb Berrier, Blaine Palmer, Betty Moyer, Ayanna Berkshire | Written and Directed by John Rosman

Since making its debut at last year’s Fantasia Film Festival, New Life has garnered a lot of attention for its first-time writer/director John Rosman and his potentially apocalyptic chase film. I missed it during its festival run, but on the eve of its American release, I got my chance to rectify that and see if it lived up to its hype.

It starts like a conventional thriller, with a bloodied woman slipping through the streets of what looks like a typical American suburb, trying to avoid being seen. She lets herself into her house and cleans herself up. She barely managed to wash and change before she sees armed men in her kitchen. She lets herself out a window and, since they apparently never learned about guarding a perimeter,...

The Curse Of La Llorona: The Box Office Hit The Conjuring Universe Didn't Want
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"You can't count it!" That's what producer Peter Safran said to Entertainment Weekly in 2023 about "The Curse of La Llorona" being part of The Conjuring Universe. Safran, who has helped to spearhead the very successful horror franchise alongside James Wan since 2013, did not leave any room for interpretation there. Yet, director Michael Chaves' successful 2019 feature directorial debut contains characters from "Conjuring" films, as well as overt references to events in those stories. Be that as it may, this movie now exists as both an unquestionable hit and a film that narratively exists in The Conjuring Universe but, for technical reasons, actually doesn't.

In the era of cinematic universes, it's an almost unprecedented situation. Why provide connective tissue if the plan isn't to connect these dots?...

The Conjuring 4 taps director Michael Chaves to helm the final installment of the main series
Image
THR reports that Michael Chaves is in negotiations to serve as the director of The Conjuring 4, which is expected to be the final installment of the main series.

Michael Chaves is no stranger to The Conjuring franchise as he was the director of the last installment, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and also helmed The Nun II. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who penned the screenplay for the third installment, will return to write this final sequel. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are naturally expected to return as Ed and Lorraine Warren, with production looking to start shooting this summer in Atlanta. Plot details are being kept under wraps at this point, but a few ghostly apparitions and demonic possessions are a good bet.

Zack Snyder at an event for Sucker Punch (2011)
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire Review: Zack Snyder’s Perplexing Star Wars Rip-Off
Zack Snyder at an event for Sucker Punch (2011)
The confused nature of the theatrical window for streamer-owned films reached a new level of absurdity with Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire. Not only is this blockbuster behemoth merely the first installment of a two-part film—the second, subtitled The Scargiver, is set to be released in April—it’s a truncated version of its maker’s substantially longer preferred cut, which makes the film two-thirds of one-half of a story.

Rebel Moon began life as a Star Wars project before Snyder’s concept was turned down, and the resulting film often sounds as though the director and co-writers Kurt Johnsta and Shay Hatten did little more to their draft than perform a find-and-replace for any terms trademarked by Disney. The film even piggybacks off of George Lucas’s indebtedness to Kurosawa Akira: Its protagonist, Kora (Sofia Boutella), is a disillusioned veteran of the “Motherworld” autocracy who,...

‘Nun 2’ Director Explains Why His ‘Curse of La Llorona’ Isn’t Part of the ‘Conjuring’ Universe
Image
“The Nun II” is more evidence that “The Conjuring Universe” is among the most consistent and bankable franchises in Hollywood. It’s a straight-up sequel to “The Nun,” with both films now serving as prequels to “The Conjuring 2.” The Michael Chaves-directed entry earned $268 million worldwide on a $39 million budget. That was up from Chaves’ $197 million-grossing “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” released in the Covid/Project Popcorn summer of 2021. It’s also more than the $200 million DC superhero tentpole “The Flash.”

The eight films, begun in 2013 with James Wan’s “The Conjuring,” have earned over $2.25 billion on a combined budget of $71 million. Well, $2.37 billion if you count Michael Chaves’ “The Curse of La Llorona.” That early 2019 flick earned $123 million in early 2019 and contained a handful of “Conjuring” universe treats.

How Curse of La Llorona Connects To The Conjuring & Annabelle
Image
"The Curse of La Llorona" was initially believed to be a standalone film, but it was later revealed to be connected to the greater "Conjuring" universe. Tony Amendola reprises his role as Father Perez from "Annabelle" in "The Curse of La Llorona," making it a direct connection between the two films. While the film doesn't officially belong to the "Conjuring" universe, it contains Easter eggs and references that link it to the broader cinematic universe, leaving the possibility open for a future connection.

The Curse of La Llorona is a standalone horror movie with ties to a greater universe, but how does La Llorona connect to The Conjuring? When New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. released The Conjuring in 2013, they had no idea just how big it would become. The James Wan-directed film is viewed as one of the modern classics of the genre and received critical praise upon release.

Frightfest 2023: ‘New Life’ Review
Image
Stars: Sonya Walger, Hayley Erin, Tony Amendola | Written and Directed by John Rosman

New Life is a low-key ground-floor beginning of-the-apocalypse thriller. A character-driven piece of one woman’s fight to evade capture and another woman’s race to find her. Told from two very uniquely distinctive perspectives worlds apart yet not so different.

As a lover of the “end of the world” genre I’m always keen to see projects dealing with the beginnings of the event. Yes, sometimes times they can be snooze fests like Side Effects but when done right you get movies like Outbreak. You could also go full musical and give the world Anna and the Apocalypse (my favourite Xmas movie). Where does New Life fit in though?

We follow Jessie (Hayley Erin) who after a chance meeting with a pooch that has recently escaped the lab, she unknowingly contracts a rare string of the Ebola virus.

The Nun 2 Director Loves The Pressure Of Conjuring's Cinematic Universe
Image
Director Michael Chaves treats each movie in The Conjuring Universe as its own, highlighting the unique personalities and stories of each installment. Chaves appreciates the pressure from fans to connect the movies in the universe, as it adds to the sense of a bigger story and weight to the films. Despite some lower ratings from critics, Chaves' projects have been well-received by audiences, with high approval ratings for both The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun II.

With two chapters already under his belt in the series, The Nun II director Michael Chaves has opened up about the pressures in expanding The Conjuring Universe. First launched by James Wan with the 2013 namesake horror hit, the franchise has become one of the most profitable not only for the horror genre, but Hollywood in general, having amassed a combined $2.1 billion against its combined $178 million budget. New Life Review | A Cat and Mouse Thriller with a Horror Twist
Image
New Life, the debut feature-length offering from writer/director Jonathan Rosman, is yet another case of a film that's difficult to talk about without spoiling some of its key surprises. It's a genre film, of that there is little doubt, but it takes its time before becoming a horror movie and getting to the real frights, spending much of its first act instead resembling more of a traditional cat and mouse thriller, a la The Fugitive.

New Life Expertly Creates Tension and Withholds Information

The film opens on Jessica (Hayley Erin), whose face is covered in blood that doesn't appear to be hers. She's on the run from someone or something, and she's scared. That's pretty much all we know about her for quite some time.

We get a little more overall information when we meet the film's other lead, Elsa, played by Sonya Walger. Elsa is a senior government manhunter,...

New Life teaser trailer: Sonya Walger, Hayley Erin horror thriller is making the festival rounds
Image
Nearly a year and a half has passed since we heard that Sonya Walger (For All Mankind) had signed on to star in the cat and mouse horror thriller New Life with Hayley Erin of Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, and Tony Amendola – who was in both the Conjuring Universe film Annabelle and the Conjuring Universe adjacent The Curse of La Llorona. New Life recently made its premiere at the Fantasia film festival, where our own Tyler Nichols got to check it out, resulting in a 7/10 review you can read Here. We included the teaser trailer in that review, but just in case you overlooked it, this seemed like a good time to put a spotlight on it, since New Life is now set to screen at FrightFest in London in just a week and a half, on Friday, August 25th.

This film marks the feature debut of writer/director John Rosman.

Castlevania: Nocturne teaser trailer: animated series reaches Netflix in September
Image
The animated Netflix series based on the Castlevania video game franchise wrapped up back in 2021 after a four season, 32 episode run – but if you were left wanting to see more Castlevania after watching that show, you’re in luck. Castlevania is getting a spin-off follow-up called Castlevania: Nocturne that’s set to make its Netflix debut on September 28th! With that date just two months away, a teaser trailer has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Set in 1792, during the French Revolution, Castlevania: Nocturne focuses on Maria Renard and Richter Belmont, a descendant of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades. While the first series drew inspiration from Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, Nocturne is primarily based on the 1993 video game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and its 1997 sequel Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

The Curse of La Llorona is Not part of The Conjuring Universe
Image
The Conjuring Universe is the highest-grossing horror franchise in the world, but one installment of the series doesn’t belong. The Curse of La Llorona is based on Latin American folklore and follows a mother in 1973 Los Angeles who must save her children from a malevolent spirit trying to steal them. While The Curse of La Llorona has several notable connections to The Conjuring Universe (including an Annabelle easter egg and Tony Amendola reprising his role as Father Perez), its place in the franchise hasn’t always been clear… until now.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, The Curse of La Llorona director Michael Chaves confirmed that the movie is Not part of The Conjuring Universe. “There’s so much debate about it and I think I’ve played coy in the past,” Chaves said. “The idea was that [the Annabelle cameo] was going to be this little hidden thing that you were going...

Confirmed: ‘The Curse of La Llorona’ Is Definitely Not Part of the Official ‘Conjuring Universe’
Image
Depending on who you ask, this year’s The Nun II is either the eighth or ninth film in Warner Bros. and New Line’s The Conjuring Universe, and that’s because 2019’s The Curse of La Llorona was never actually marketed as being part of the universe, despite having a clear connection to it. So what’s the story there? Is it a Conjuring movie or is it not?

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly in celebration of The Conjuring‘s 10th anniversary, La Llorona director Michael Chaves confirms that it’s Not an official Conjuring movie. This despite the fact that Tony Amendola reprises his role as Father Perez from the first Annabelle movie, while The Curse of La Llorona also features a cameo from Annabelle herself.

“There’s so much debate about it and I think I’ve played coy in the past,” Chaves tells EW. “The idea was...

Exclusive: Tony Amendola (Stargate Sg-1) will topline Rough Magic: Exit Shakespeare, a new film from veteran TV director Andy Wolk (The Practice) and Silver Spring Road Films that has recently wrapped production.

The film is set in 1611 on a single night where Shakespeare (Amendola) is at a crisis point in his career. It’s about how writers age, their jealousies, resentments, and regrets, why they can’t revisit their old glories, and how their writing can overwhelm their life. Shakespeare has sacrificed much of his family life for his theatrical success and now—haunted with guilt about missing his young son’s death to the plague—he is forced to reflect on the price at which glory comes.

WGA and Humanitas Award winner Wolk directed from a script he wrote with Elliot Krieger, and produced alongside Matt Handy.

‘Castlevania’ Spinoff About Richter Belmont, Maria Renard Ordered at Netflix
Castlevania (2017)
Netflix has ordered a “Castlevania” spinoff series from the original show’s producers, the streaming service revealed Friday. The spinoff is focused on Maria Renard and Richter Belmont, the son of Sypha and Trevor, and set in 1792 France during the French Revolution.

The “Castlevania” franchise launched in the late 1980s as an action-adventure gothic horror video game series about vampire hunters. It was created and developed by Konami.

After many, many more installments, Netflix turned “Castlevania” into an anime series — the very first for the streaming service. The 10-episode fourth and final season premiered last month.

“Castlevania,” the series, is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, who’s trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepes himself. Its voice cast included James Callis, Emily Swallow, Matt Frewer, Tony Amendola and Alejandra Reynoso.

Per Netflix, “In the epic final season of ‘Castlevania,...
