The Pitt Fans Need To Check Out This Underrated Clive Owen Series On HBO Max
Image
Medical dramas have been a pretty regular television staple for a long time, but people really seem to love the HBO Max series "The Pitt." With each season set over the course of a single 15-hour shift in the emergency room of the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital, "The Pitt" is a pure shot of adrenaline each and every episode. Moving in as close to real time as you can get, we see the doctors, nurses, and other staff in the emergency room deal with all kinds of trauma cases ranging from simple stitches and wound care to the catastrophic injuries from a mass shooting event at a nearby concert. It's incredibly compelling television that happens to be pretty darn medically accurate as well, with some truly impressive special effects work to sell the blood and guts of it all (including a graphic birth scene).

For fans of "The Pitt...

The Knick Season 3 Could Still Happen, With Barry Jenkins Directing
Image
Do you remember "The Knick"? It's easy for some shows to fall through the cracks, and it's even easier when they're on networks most people don't have. But "The Knick," which ran for two great seasons, is what I'd consider "must-see TV." Created by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler and helmed entirely by Steven Soderbergh, the series was set at the (fictional) Knickerbocker Hospital in New York City in 1900. Dark, gruesome, funny, and altogether brilliant, the series followed the medical staff of the Knick and their various exploits. Cinemax canceled the show after two seasons, but then, in 2020, we got word that a reboot/third season was in the works. Soderberg was developing the new season/series along with director Barry Jenkins and André Holland, who played Dr. Algernon Edwards in the original series.

Since then, though, we haven't heard much about this new take on "The Knick," which is...

‘Perry Mason’s Matthew Rhys On The Power Of Noir, Scene Partners & New Perspectives — Deadline FYC House + HBO Max
Image
Editor’s note: This interview was done outside of the FYC event as there was no cast or creatives panel.

“I think there’s a certain pace a noir allows, which at times can be an indulgent luxury,” says Perry Mason‘s Matthew Rhys of the 1930s-set HBO series from Team Downey. “But it really allows you the time for things to unfold. It’s a real luxury, I think, for actors to have that kind of time and space, and real estate.”

Chatting before Perry Mason was canceled by HBO on June 6 after a two-season run, Rhys certainly has a strong sense of time and space tacking the iconic character in the heart of the Great Depression and the rise of Fascism in Germany, Italy and Spain. Having concluded its second season April 24, the series starring Rhys, Juliet Rylance, Chris Chalk, Shea Whigham, Justin Kirk, Diarra Kilpatrick and Jee Young Han...

Perry Mason Canceled At HBO; Will Not Be Getting Renewed For Season 3
Image
In a surprising turn of events, HBO chose not to renew the revival of classic series Perry Mason for its third season. The Matthew Rhys led period drama series has just recently concluded Season 2 last April 24, 2023. There were even rumors of possible third installment for the show, until HBO announced the series’ cancelation.

The cancelation announcement comes as a disappointment to fans, especially given the season 2 finale’s cliffhanger ending that saw Perry Mason in prison.

The show was executive produced by Team Downey, owned by Robert Down Jr. and his wife Susan Downey. HBO relayed to Deadline their gratitude for Rhys and the entire team.

“We are tremendously grateful for the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the unrivaled cast and crew of Perry Mason for their reimagining of such a treasured and storied franchise. While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we...

HBO Cancels ‘Perry Mason’ After 2 Seasons
Image
HBO has canceled its Matthew Rhys-led drama Perry Mason after two seasons, according to Deadline. Produced by Robert Downey Jr.’s Team Downey, the reworked 1950s and ’60s classic courtroom show followed the titular character portrayed by Rhys. “We are tremendously grateful for the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the unrivaled cast and crew of Perry Mason for their reimagining of such a treasured and storied franchise,” HBO said in a statement. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we are excited to continue working with the brilliant creatives at Team Downey on future projects.” The series premiered strongly in June 2020, which would see Rhys earn an Emmy nomination for his leading role. HBO renewed the series midway through its first season. Season 2 saw Jack Amiel and Michael Begler (The Knick) serve as showrunners, taking over for creators Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones...

‘Perry Mason’ Canceled at HBO After Two Seasons
Image
“Perry Mason” has been canceled at HBO, Variety has confirmed. The series debuted its second and final season at the premium cabler in March.

“We are tremendously grateful for the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the unrivaled cast and crew of ‘Perry Mason’ for their reimagining of such a treasured and storied franchise,” HBO said in a statement. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we are excited to continue working with the brilliant creatives at Team Downey on future projects.”

Based on the characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, Matthew Rhys starred in the series in the title role. Unlike the 1950’s TV series in which Mason worked as a lawyer, the HBO series portrays the character earlier in his life when he is a private investigator in Los Angeles in the 1930s.

Along with Rhys, the Season 2 cast also included: Juliet Rylance,...

‘Perry Mason’ Canceled By HBO After 2 Seasons

Exclusive: Perry Mason has tried his last case — at least for now. HBO has opted not to renew the prequel to the classic series, starring Matthew Rhys and executive produced by Team Downey’s Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey, for a third season. The news comes a month and a half after the Season 2 finale debuted April 24.

“We are tremendously grateful for the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the unrivaled cast and crew of Perry Mason for their reimagining of such a treasured and storied franchise,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we are excited to continue working with the brilliant creatives at Team Downey on future projects.”

Perry Mason's Paul Raci Didn't Know Lydell Was Going To Be Such A Horrid Character [Exclusive]
Image
This post contains spoilers for season 2 of "Perry Mason."

Season 2 of HBO's gritty reboot of "Perry Mason" wrapped up with the titular lawyer (Matthew Rhys) behind bars after one of his two clients is set free. It wasn't exactly the perfect ending, but then that's the whole point of this show — to peer beneath the glamorous veneer of 1930s Los Angeles to reveal its imperfect underbelly.

And in the show's view of depression-era Los Angeles, everyone's got something to hide, whether it's Juliet Rylance's closeted lesbian Della Street or Chris Chalk's Paul Drake, whose emotional season 2 arc saw him commit all sorts of morally questionable acts in pursuit of the truth. What's more, the whole reason Rhys' Mason ends up in jail is that he's literally hiding something — the gun used to kill Brooks McCutcheon (Tommy Dewey).

It's this murder that's at the heart of season 2's mystery.

Even Perry Mason's Producers Never Know Where The Twists And Turns Will Lead
Image
If you watched the entirety of "Perry Mason" season 2 and couldn't quite figure out where it was all going in the moment, well, you're not the only one.

The HBO noir series flipped the script on us in surprising fashion this time around. In the first season, Matthew Rhys' eponymous detective-turned-lawyer had no choice but to get to the bottom of the gruesome killing of Emily Dodson's (Gayle Rankin) infant son in an attempt to clear her name ... though, in the end, he only managed to secure a Pyrrhic victory of a hung jury. In season 2, we learn relatively quickly that the two unfortunate clients who Perry has to defend this time around, the Gallardo brothers accused of murdering Los Angeles civil servant Brooks McCutcheon (Tommy Dewey) and subjected to a virulently racist public trial, actually were responsible for pulling the trigger. But the overarching conflict of the story...

Perry Mason Showrunner Divulges Details On A Sacrificed Season 2 Finale Scene
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Perry Mason" season 2.

"Perry Mason" season 2 wrapped up with a bittersweet finale that saw the titular lawyer locked up for his indiscretions, having gotten just one of his clients off the hook. The ultimate episode of what was a stellar season also saw the conniving Camilla Nygaard (Hope Davis)'s scheming revealed, Lydell McCutcheon (Paul Raci) trapped in Japan, and most importantly, the Gallardo brothers spared the noose — even though Mateo (Peter Mendoza) was sentenced to 30 years in jail.

But what about arguably the two standout characters this season, Juliet Rylance's Della Street and Chris Chalk's Paul Drake? Well, things work out relatively well for them, considering the episodes seemed to be building towards some kind of breaking point for both — especially Drake, whose emotional season 2 arc promised to deliver a full-on meltdown that never materialized. Instead, Street manages to stay a closeted...

‘Perry Mason’ Revealed Its Season 2 Killer Early, but Landed on Their Identity Late
Image
Just before the end of the seventh episode of Season 2 of “Perry Mason,” the writers expose the mastermind behind the murder that Mason’s defendants — a pair of poor Mexican brothers — were paid to commit. It’s the perfect reveal in that the villain’s identity feels shocking yet inevitable upon reflection, given how intricately it’s interwoven with everything that has come before. Yet according to Michael Begler, who took over showrunning duties on “Perry Mason” this season with his writing partner Jack Amiel, the identity of the antagonist came fairly late in the process. “I think the last part [we figured out] was who done it,” Begler told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “When I really think about how we broke the season, we were rewriting and rewriting. It was changing constantly.”

Coming on to the show, Begler’s desire was to expand the series’ vision of Los Angeles. Giving “Perry...

Perry Mason Season 3 Chances Addressed By Showrunner After That Big Finale
Image
The co-showrunner of Perry Mason offers an update on season 3 after that big finale. In the second installment of the HBO drama, which is based on the character created by Erle Stanley Gardner and takes place in the 1930s, Matthews Rhys returns in the title role. Consisting of eight episodes, Perry Mason season 2 focuses on the death of a notable society figure. When the district attorney places the blame on the most obvious and ostracized suspects, Mason and his team work together and slowly uncover a wide-reaching conspiracy.

In an interview with TVLine following the conclusion of Perry Mason season 2, co-showrunner Michael Begler addressed the drama's future. Perry Mason has not been renewed, but Begler struck an optimistic tone and noted that "there’s so much story to tell with these characters." Begler, who serves as showrunner alongside Jack Amiel, also gave a general update on when HBO might make...

‘Perry Mason’s Matthew Rhys & EPs Tease Tonight’s Season 2 Finale, Possible Season 3 & Power Of Time Travel
Image
Exclusive: “I’ve always boiled it down to there’s something very simplistic to Mason,” Perry Mason star Matthew Rhys admits about the iconic and haunted lawyer he portrays on the HBO prequel series. “It’s not necessarily his sense of justice but sense of right and wrong,” the Emmy winner adds. “What is right and wrong, and how he goes about righting that, righting that wrong, is, at times, very questionable. But fundamentally, his sense of pure form justice is so strong that everything else becomes very difficult, and the playing of that was just magic.”

With the Season 2 finale of the series now steered by Michael Begler and Jack Amiel as showrunners and Team Downey set to drop tonight on the premium cabler and HBO Max, the Americans alumni finds his character in some dramatic territory in and out of court in Depression-era Los Angeles.

Perry Mason's Paul Raci Reveals Major Scenes Between Brooks And Lydell Were Added Mid-Shoot [Exclusive]
Image
This post contains major spoilers for "Perry Mason" season 2.

As season 2 of HBO's "Perry Mason" comes to a close, the final pieces of the increasingly complex puzzle are coming together. With this second run of episodes, new showrunners Jack Amiel and Michael Begler have turned the series from an unrelentingly gloomy affair into a compelling glimpse beneath the surface of 1930s Los Angeles that, much like the court cases Matthew Rhys' Mason conducts so deftly, brings the truth of the era to light. While the production design and lighting beautifully convey the vibrant and often glamorous veneer of the setting, there is plenty of skullduggery and moral decay lurking below the surface.

Much of that is showcased in the stories of Mason's co-counsel Della Street and his lead investigator Paul Drake, who have been given a lot more to do this season. And as a result, they've come face...

Perry Mason's Chris Chalk Found Excitement In Paul Drake's Emotional Season 2 Arc
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Perry Mason" season 2.

The "Perry Mason" season 2 premiere starts with the perfect representation of the show's renewed focus. Whereas the first season was an unrelentingly grim affair that started with baby murder, this time we open on a lively speakeasy boat party. But a fire soon engulfs the boat and the jazzy dance number is replaced by the screams of its patrons. In those opening moments, the episode encapsulates the theme of this new season and of its 1930s Los Angeles setting. While everything appears ok, there are sinister forces at play beneath the carapace.

Former showrunners Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald were replaced by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler for this new run of episodes. The pair spearheaded this shift in tone from an unapologetically dark and violent slow burn to a show that celebrates the allure of its 1930s setting while confronting the...

In a Lonely Place: How ‘Perry Mason’ Tweaks Its Cinematography for a New Season of Noirish Mysteries
Image
In its first season, HBO’s “Perry Mason” received Emmy and ASC award nominations for David Franco’s exquisitely atmospheric cinematography, which avoided the desaturated look so common to period shows and evoked the 1930s by referencing early color still photography. One might have thought it would be difficult to improve upon the look established by Franco and alternating cinematographer Darran Tiernan, but the new season of “Perry Mason” that premiered March 6 is even more vivid and involving thanks to slight changes in color and a more subjective approach to the camerawork.

When the gritty origin story of Erle Stanley Gardner’s defense attorney premiered in 2020, cinematographer Eliot Rockett was one of its fans. Now, he joins the series — along with showrunners Jack Amiel and Michael Begler — for Season 2, lensing the premiere and alternating subsequent episodes with Tiernan and John Grillo. “I thought the first season was great, so there...

Perry Mason Exec Producers On Season 2's 'Wonderfully Messy' Starting Place [Exclusive Interview]
Image
This post contains mild spoilers for the season 2 premiere of "Perry Mason."

HBO's "Perry Mason" is back, and the second season starts not only with a bang, but with a fire. If you've seen the episode, you may or may not know that the flammable event we saw unfold is part of real Los Angeles history.

Deciding to include that occurrence in the show, however, came after the creative team decided where they wanted their characters to go emotionally. "I would say first and foremost that we always start with our characters," co-showrunner Michael Begler told me in the lead up to the season 2 premiere, later adding that they had to "pick and choose" what historical happenings would "organically work" as they built out the story that will unfold in the upcoming episodes.

I spoke with Begler and executive producer Susan Downey about how they approached crafting the second season,...

Matthew Rhys in Perry Mason (2020)
‘Perry Mason’ Producers Susan Downey and Michael Begler on the New Season: ‘It Was All About Character’ (Video)
Matthew Rhys in Perry Mason (2020)
“Perry Mason” is back. And we talked to the cast and producers about where the show is headed this season – and beyond (you can watch the interview above).

After the new iteration of the classic series debuted in 2020 as a limited series on HBO, the cable network decided to bring it back, this time as a (potentially) ongoing show. Matthew Rhys, Juliet Rylance, Shea Whigham and Chris Chalk are all back, as is the corruption, vice, murder, political intrigue and far-reaching conspiratorial nature of the original run of episodes.

This time Mason is defending a pair of young Mexican men who are accused of killing a wealthy socialite and the son of a powerful Los Angeles business. Of course, when Mason (and his team) start to dig, they uncover something far more sinister.

Susan Downey & Michael Begler Interview: Perry Mason Season 2
Image
Perry Mason returns for season 2 nearly three years after it first debuted on HBO. After creators and showrunners Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald stepped down, Jack Amiel and Michael Begler stepped in to work alongside executive producers Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey. Perry Mason stars Matthew Rhys as the title character initially created by Erle Stanley Gardner. Joining him are Juliet Rylance as Della Street and Chris Chalk as Paul Drake.

The trio, which came together at the end of season 1, will find themselves in a bit of a rut when season 2 begins, but Perry, Della, and Paul will quickly be swept up in another murder trial that will shake Los Angeles to its core. Perry Mason season 2 features several additions to its cast, including Hope Davis, Katherin Waterston, Paul Raci, Sean Astin, and Mark O'Brien. Justin Kirk, Eric Lange, and Diarra Kilpatrick reprise their roles from season 1.

Amid a Rising Tide of Reboots, ‘Perry Mason’ Season 2 Raises the Bar
Image
We are living in the Golden Age of Television… I.P. Whether it’s NBC rebooting “Night Court” or Netflix reliving “That 90’s Show,” intellectual property is the name of the game. Heck, “The Lord of the Rings” can’t even finish one reboot before the next comes along. Viewers are so inundated with old ideas rehashed into something new, they may not even notice how thoroughly I.P. has infiltrated their entertainment. Marvel comics were adapted into Marvel movies, which were extended into Marvel TV shows, which were then connected back to Marvel movies, which, by then, were incorporating old Marvel actors right alongside new Marvel actors — both playing the same role. I’m not even sure that winding, snakelike sentence holds together, but the point remains: We’re hearing the same stories about the same people over and over and over again. Hollywood has found a way to turn ouroboros into pure profit.

Raymond Burr in Perry Mason (1957)
‘Perry Mason’ Star Matthew Rhys Teases Potential Future Seasons: ‘Where You Go from Here, the Sky’s the Limit’ (Video)
Raymond Burr in Perry Mason (1957)
When “Perry Mason” debuted on HBO back in 2020, it was meant to be a limited series. But the show was critically acclaimed and extremely popular so now, nearly three years later, it is returning to HBO (and HBO Max) with a juicy new case, lots of morally ambiguous complications and a pair of new showrunners in “The Knick” creators Jack Amiel and Michael Begler.

And Matthew Rhys, who plays Perry Mason in the show, couldn’t be more thrilled, as he told TheWrap, video of which you can watch above.

“There was talk that it could work as a standalone limited but I just thought, You’ve just set this whole thing up. The whole thing is new and fresh. You’ve just joined not only him but this team. Where you go from here, the sky’s the limit. I was very glad that we were given that opportunity,...

Perry Mason's Chris Chalk & Juliet Rylance On Their Characters' Big Changes [Exclusive Interview]
Image
"Perry Mason" is coming back after three long years. A lot has happened in those years, and if the trailer is any indication, a lot has changed for the core characters in the aftermath of the events from season 1. Matthew Rhys plays the titular character of the show, but the series is more of an ensemble affair with Juliet Rylance and Chris Chalk's characters, Della Street and Paul Drake, filling out the triumvirate of leads.

I had the chance to talk with Rylance and Chalk in advance of the season 2 premiere, where they discussed where their characters are now compared to when we last saw them. "We begin the season as three very isolated people trying to figure out how to work together and be in the same room," Rylance explained, and also shared that Della in particular "is trying to find a new way."

Chalk also teased that...

Perry Mason Season 2 TV Review

Review: When Perry Mason debuted in 2020, it was as a limited series. The stellar whodunit introduced a new generation to a grittier take on Erle Stanley Gardner’s iconic literary creation previously associated with Raymond Burr’s performance. Matthew Rhys brought a different edge to Mason alongside Juliet Rylance and Chris Chalk as Della Street and Paul Drake. 'Perry Mason' Season 2 Review: Matthew Rhys and Juliet Rylance Excel in a More Focused Story
Image
What is it that we can do to find justice in a world where corruption has consumed everything? There is a unique amalgamation of optimism and pessimism at the heart of the HBO series Perry Mason, which sets out to answer this question in its second season. Much feels the same this time around, with Matthew Rhys in rare form as his titular hard-drinking private detective turned crusading lawyer remains both as ornery and horny as ever. However, as the flawed character tries to contend with his role in the system meant to bring about justice, Season 2 also finds a better balance than when we first met him. Though not as good as their spectacular prior series The Knick, the hiring of new showrunners Michael Begler and Jack Amiel has proven to be the winning addition needed to crack both the character and his latest case wide open. Sure, it...

This is Hamilton Burger, personal friend and professional nemesis to the title character of Perry Mason, in the legal drama’s long-delayed second season premiere. The first season occasionally used Burger (played by Justin Kirk) as a mouthpiece for all the ways this take on the character wouldn’t resemble either the Erle Stanley Gardner novels or the black-and-white TV series with Raymond Burr. At one point, for instance, he warned Perry (Matthew Rhys) that “No one confesses on the stand,...

Perry Mason Season 2 Trailer Brings Back Matthew Rhys' Hero Lawyer
Image
Matthew Rhys is back in the first trailer for HBO’s Perry Mason season 2. Erle Stanley Gardner’s Perry Mason novels formed the basis for the legendary television series starring Raymond Burr as the (almost) unbeatable defense lawyer. In 2020, Perry Mason got a very gritty period-set reboot, starring The Americans’ Rhys as Gardner’s complicated-but-heroic attorney. Then in July 2020, HBO announced that Perry Mason would be back to tackle another case in season 2.

It’s unfortunately taking quite awhile for Perry Mason season 2 to be delivered after that 2020 announcement. But now the second season is indeed officially on the way, with a premiere date set for March 6, 2023. And fans can finally catch their first glimpse of what’s in store for Perry Mason season 2, thanks to a new trailer just released by HBO. See the clip in the space below:

Perry Mason Season 2 Trailer: Matthew Rhys' Angsty, Brooding Lawyer Is Back For Another Angsty, Brooding Case
Image
When you watch enough movies and shows, you start to pick up on certain little recurring trends. Chief among them has to be the instinct to create new adaptations of classic, pulpy characters ... but with a dark, brooding, and adult-only sheen layered on top. After all, how else would you know to put the "prestige" in prestige television?

Well, as eye-rolling and clichéd as this tendency may be, I'm here to admit that I'm a complete and total hypocrite, because I happily ate that up and asked for more when HBO gave the same exact treatment to the classic character of Perry Mason. Initially a 1957 legal drama on CBS, with the eponymous private investigator played by Raymond Burr and based on the books and short stories written by author Erle Stanley Gardner, creators Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald saw fit to make a new "Perry Mason" adaptation -- this time,...

Juliet Rylance (‘Perry Mason’) discusses reboot’s lesbian twist for Della Street [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“She’s a very solitary character because she’s carrying this secret — a huge part of who she is,” muses Juliet Rylance about Della Street, the iconic “Perry Mason” character that she plays in the reboot for HBO starring Matthew Rhys as the eponymous defense attorney. Della is Perry’s secretary and the new 1933-set series created by Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones eschews their will-they-won’t-they dynamic by making Della a lesbian.

“I really love that Ron and Rolin made this choice for a number of different reasons,” reveals Rylance in her exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above) about taking on the role that won Barbara Hale the 1959 Emmy Award for Best Drama Supporting Actress. She continues, “It immediately kind of makes it very interesting. It makes her as a character quite an enigma at the beginning of the series.”

Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell and Tim Van Patten: Producing ‘Perry Mason’ with Matthew Rhys instead of Robert Downey Jr. [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“We’ve been living with this project for almost a decade,” reveals Susan Downey in an exclusive panel interview with Gold Derby about rebooting “Perry Mason” for HBO (watch the video above). Developed as a film before pivoting to a miniseries format, what ultimately became an ongoing drama series aired its first season on HBO last year with Matthew Rhys in the eponymous role. He replaced Downey’s husband Robert Downey Jr., who shifted solely to an executive producer role as a result of “scheduling issues.”

Downey explains opposite fellow executive producers Amanda Burrell and Tim Van Patten, “By the time we had a couple of the episodes, HBO was getting really excited and we were trying to figure out, ‘Okay, we don’t want to lose that excitement and that momentum’ and Robert, as most people know, has been also busy for the past decade doing some movies and stuff and so,...
