Nearly a decade since Ava DuVernay launched Array, what was initially a small distribution company has grown to become a multimedia empire that now sits on a sprawling Los Angeles campus. The gated property in Historic Filipinotown contains, among several things, post-production facilities and a recently completed state-of-the-art, 50-seat theater that will screen Array titles, work by local artists, and an annual film series, which was announced today, curated and funded by DuVernay’s non-profit Array Alliance. Titled Array 360, the program will bring together award-winning filmmakers and emerging artists for six weekends of cinema, community, and conversation.

Ava DuVernay continues to champion inclusivity and global film perspectives with Array 360 film series to mark the completion of the Array Creative Campus and the brand-spankin’ new, state-of-the-art Amanda Theater. The series will kick off September 27 and continue through November 2.

Located in the Historic Filipinotown in Los Angeles, the Amanda Theater will host the inaugural film series created and funded by DuVernay’s non-profit Array Alliance. For six weekends, Array 360 will feature award-winning filmmakers and emerging artists.

Ava DuVernay is launching a curated film series in Los Angeles showcasing emerging artists, female filmmakers and directors from underrepresented backgrounds, DuVernay’s non-profit organization Array Alliance announced Friday.

Array 360 will be six weeks of cinema, community and conversation hosted in La’s historic Filipinotown starting on Sept. 27 and running through Nov. 2. The screening space for the films, including work by Agnès Varda, Euzhan Palcy, Barbara Loden, Suzana Amaral, Kathleen Collins, Shirin Neshat, Garrett Bradley and Mati Diop, among others, will be hosted on the Array Creative Campus at the Amanda Theater.

As part of the series, DuVernay is also hosting a weekend marathon of the films of the late John Singleton, who passed away earlier this year. Array 360 will also feature a showcase of Filipinx cinema from the neighborhood and a conversation between DuVernay and director Michael Mann. Two highly-anticipated second feature films from U.S. underground filmmakers will be making their World Premieres all the way over at the 64th annual Edinburgh International Film Festival, which will run for twelve days on June 16-27. The films are Rona Mark’s The Crab and Zach Clark’s Vacation!.

The Crab, which screens on June 21, is the touching story of a verbally abusive man born with two enormous, mutant-like hands; while Vacation!, which screens on June 20, tracks four urban gals let loose in a sunny seaside resort down South.

Both Mark and Clark previously screened their debut features at Eiff. Mark’s Strange Girls screened there in 2008 and Clark’s Modern Love Is Automatic screened in 2009. Both films also ended up as runners-up in Bad Lit’s annual Movie of the Year award, again Strange Girls in 2008 and Modern Love in 2009. Sadly, these two masterpieces are still unavailable on...

Hotel Atlantico is exactly like how one leaves a hotel room after a night of rough sex - in a state of disarray. - Exactly as the trailer proposes, this travelogue of a drifter/out of work actor who aimlessly heads to the countryside, goes off the beaten track. Suzana Amaral has a taste for the absurd, an appreciation for the bizarre, and not so much apathy for her lead player – a scruffy looking Júlio Andrade. It suits the film well, but like life, don't look for some natural order or to make any sense of what unfolds. Hotel Atlantico is exactly like how one leaves a hotel room after a night of rough sex - in a state of disarray. I doubt that this will receive a domestic release here, but Brazilian-Latin American festivals will want to add this to their programs. In depth review soon.

• I've come up with a magical number of 30 films that I'll be covering for the fest (you might have noticed the Tiff Picks countdown over the past couple of weeks), when in fact that, the number of films I hope to catch a whopping 44! • #9. Hotel Atlantico Director: Suzana Amaral Cast: Júlio Andrade, João Miguel, Mariana Ximenes, Gero Camilo, Marcia Martins, Helena Ignez, Luis GuilhermeDistributor: Rights Available. Buzz: Amaral might be considered the Terrence Malick of Brazil - not for her style, but her total output of films. Born in 1932, she first came onto the scene with The Hour of the Star in 86', and Hotel Atlantico is only her third feature film. Tiff's Latin film programmer Diana Sanchez mentions that there is "a palpable Lynchian aura to the film, with a vaguely defined threat seeping through the scenes. At the same time, the narrative and the performers are going with the flow, exuding a “living in the moment” energy that may be due to Amaral's Buddhist beliefs." In general, I'm a fan of "drifter" films (e.g. Antonioni's The Passenger) and I'm sold on the trailer - which you can check out below.
