Telemundo has revealed its upcoming 2024-25 multiplatform programming offerings including a slate of reality TV shows, scripted dramas, live events and specials, news and sports.

NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises Chairman Luis Fernandez is spearheading an executive shuffle and a restructuring of Telemundo Studios in a bid to amp up the company’s scripted content for both linear and streaming platforms.

“At a time when Telemundo is the most-watched network in prime time, we are super-charging our scripted content production under one strong brand: Telemundo Studios,” said Fernandez who returned in December to Telemundo where he was previously head of the news division for six years before taking a hiatus.

“For almost two decades, Telemundo has led in the production of Spanish-language content made by Hispanics for Hispanics. With this streamlined structure, we are doubling down on our commitment to serve the Latino community with the best scripted content across all platforms for years to come,” he added.

As part of the restructure, he has promoted entertainment and content strategy head Ronald Day to president of entertainment...

Exclusive: It’s been a strong few weeks for Telemundo.

The Spanish-language network has been dominating primetime, placing No. 1 both in total viewers and in the 18-49 demographic, beating out rival Univision for the ratings crown.

That’s thanks largely in part by two high-performing series, reality show La Casa de Los Famosos and scripted drama El Señor de Los Cielos.

La Casa de Los Famosos is actually drawing its best audience ever, averaging 1.3M live+same-day viewers across Season 4, according to Nielsen. That marks a 7% increase over Season 3 — the largest season-over-season audience growth the series has ever seen.

So far, the series has seen an increase in total viewers each season, growing 5% from Season 1 to 2 and 1% from Season 2 to 3.

La Casa de Los Famosos is also Telemundo’s top reality series on Peacock, according to NBCUniversal.

In an exclusive interview with Variety, Ronald Day, Telemundo’s president of entertainment & content strategy, drilled down on what has made action-packed series “Lord of the Skies” (“El Señor de los cielos”), the company’s longest-running Super Series franchise and a bonafide hit.

With Season 9 set to premiere Feb. 13, “Lord of the Skies” has earned its street cred across a spectrum of young adults, split evenly among males and females. Per Nielsen, its eighth season “ranked as the #1 drama series in primetime, regardless of language, 6 out of 9 nights since its premiere, among adults 18-49, and on 8 out of 9 nights among adults 18-34.”

Season 9’s trailer, loaded with explosive scenes and showcasing the first time the series shot in Mexico’s Chinatown, clocked more than a million hits in 24 hours, he noted.

If TV’s upfront week used to be defined by spectacle — a parade of stars and musical performances culminating in glamorous parties with open bars and lobster canapés — to say the 2023 installment was muted would be an understatement.

There were still musical performances, and there were stars (at least from the world of sports, news and reality TV), but the ongoing writers strike made its presence felt.

Seth MacFarlane got another chance to show off his singing pipes — and crude sense of humor — by appearing in a pre-taped segment as his alter-ego Ted at the top of the presentation: he sang an original song about NBC selling ads about “detergent and feminine pads” and “kicking nads.” In 2021, Peacock gave a straight-to-series order to a live-action comedy series based on MacFarlane’s 2012 movie featuring the furry character.

The WGA is into week three of a strike after failing to ink a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) before the clock ran out May 1. Among the issues the two sides could not come to an agreement on are mini-rooms, the use of AI and streaming residuals.

The WGA has planned pickets at upfront locations throughtout the week, including Disney’s presentation at the North Javits Center Tuesday, the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront Wednesday morning at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, and YouTube’s upfront Wednesday evening at Lincoln Center.

The WGA had also planned to picket Netflix’s first-ever upfront presentation, which was set to take place at the Paris Theater near the Plaza Hotel Wednesday afternoon. That led to the streamer scrapping the in-person event, which will now be held virtually.

“El Señor de los Cielos” will ramp up even more of the war on narcos as the Telemundo series enters its ninth season.

“This is a narco series, however, it deals with a bunch of things happening to the family in relationships [and] in the family ties, but people want to see more of the narco world, so we’re gonna make sure we bring more of that,” Telemundo Global Studios production and development EVP Karen Barroeta told TheWrap. “The war on the narcos between Colombia and Mexico is going to be coming back.”

Romance, suspense and drama dominate the 2023 slate of Telemundo Global Studios, which presented its 2023 lineup at Content Americas under the banner The Telemundo Edge. Speaking to Variety before hosting Telemundo’s presentation, Karen Barroeta, executive VP of production and development, noted: “We have evolved the genre so much that we now call them contemporary dramas, not telenovelas.” The long-form format runs an average of 80 episodes, stripped Monday to Friday, instead of the 120+ count of the traditional telenovelas.

Telemundo’s programming is also buoyed by its action-packed Super Series, the International Emmy-winning franchise “El Señor de los Cielos” (“Lord of the Skies”), which just launched Season 8 on Jan. 17 to stellar ratings. Inspired by real events, the show stars Rafael Amaya as the titular drug lord who undergoes plastic surgery in order to evade capture. “The show is always rooted in reality,” said Barroeta who added that writer/creator Luis Zelkowicz has some 800 hours under his belt.

When we think of telenovelas, we're quick to get nostalgic about the ones we grew up watching with our moms and abuelas. We tend to associate them with being an older-generation thing, with their overdramatic and also very predictable love narratives. But that doesn't mean there aren't young Latinx folks out there who don't tune in. It makes sense, considering there are audiences who do consume content and entertainment both in English and Spanish. In fact, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises established the term "200ers" to describe them, referring to a demographic of Latinxs who identify 100 percent as American and 100 percent as Latinx and "share the values of both cultures, are bilingual, and flawlessly jump between cultures." This would explain why Emmy Award-winning telenovela "El Señor de los Cielos," with its eighth season returning to Telemundo on Tuesday, Jan. 17, has become a cross-generational hit over the years, appealing to a wider Latinx audience than ever thought possible.

Queen of the South (La Reina del Sur) is a Mexican series starring Kate del Castillo, Iván Sánchez, Cristina Urgel and Rafael Amaya among others.

Queen of the South is one of the most expensive and successful soap operas produced by Telemundo. It tells the story of the rise of Teresa Mendoza to become the queen of an international drug cartel.

A soap opera that is now available on Netflix, and is in its third season (with  over fifty episodes). It will delight some and probably leave others (especially the critics) unwilling to even mention it.

The story is based on the best-seller by Arturo Pérez Reverte who, in all his complexity, has reached the hearts of millions.

Exclusive: Action icon Jean-Claude Van Damme (Kickboxer) is set to star in action feature Silent Kill, which Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment will be introducing to buyers at this week’s American Film Market.

Anthony Hickox (Hellraiser III) wrote the screenplay and will direct the film, which will follow four mercenaries who find a hidden treasure in the Congo. They bury it and agree to meet back at the same spot in three years and split the fortune evenly, but things take a different turn.

Starring alongside Van Damme will be NFL star-turned-actor Vernon Davis (Gasoline Alley), Rafael Amaya (The Lord of Skies) and Madalina Anea (Watcher).

Van Damme and Joram Moreka are producing the film. Executive producers are Andrea Iervolino, Monika Bacardi, Ovidiu Toma and Bradly Gentz. Principal photography is due to commence in early Q1, 2023.

Roku is launching Espacio Latino, a free streaming hub for Hispanic programming, on the Roku Channel.

With more than 61 million active accounts as of March 31, Roku is a leading gateway for streaming, and one of its most popular offerings is the Roku Channel, a mix of free and paid on-demand and linear services with reach to some 80 million households. The Roku Channel operates in the U.S., UK and Canada but the Espacio Latino initiative is launching in the U.S. only.

Companies like TelevisaUnivision and Telemundo have noted in mobilizing streaming ventures recently that the Hispanic audience is underserved. Espacio Latino will aggregate thousands of movie, series and telenovela titles as well as family entertainment and news.

Telemundo has unveiled its latest slate of 900 hours of original content including a new drug lord drama starring Majida Issa and Mark Tacher.

NBCUniversal’s Hispanic network is launching a slew of new shows and renewals, including an update on its adaptation of gameshow The Wall, ahead of NBCU’s Upfront presentation on Monday.

This marks its first slate since the departure of president Luis Silberwasser.

Operación Pacífico is the broadcaster’s latest Super Series, a slate of action-orientated telenovelas that have reinvented the genre with shorter runs. The show is inspired by the true story of federal agent Amalia Ortega.

Elsewhere, it has renewed El Señor de los Cielos for a seventh season and is launching limited series No Te Puedes Esconder. In reality, it is “recharging” shows including The Voice (La Voz) and Exatlon as well as premiering The Wall.

The 21st Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival (Sdlff) is now accepting entries for the 2014 festival. Sdlff will take place March 13-23, 2014 at the Ultrastar Cinemas Mission Valley at Hazard Center located in beautiful San Diego, California.Submit early for discounted entry fees!

Last year's festival was attended by an audience of 20,500 actively-engaged film lovers, filmmakers, actors, programmers, distributors, industry representatives and journalists from around the world. The San Diego Latino Film Festival has used the unique geographical and cultural position of the San Diego Border Region to make the festival a premiere venue for the exhibition of international and U.S. Latino features, shorts and documentaries.

Twenty-one years ago, the San Diego Latino Film Festival was originally established as a student film festival focusing on works by Latinos and/or about the Latino Experience. Since that time, the San Diego Latino Film Festival has developed into one of the biggest and most well respected Latino film festivals in the country.

Over 240,000 people have attended during the past seventeen years, and2,100 films/videos from across Latin America and the United States have been screened. Selection Process (Important Information)

Sdlff 2014 is seeking innovative works that are 'by', 'about' or 'for' the Latino community, that have been completed between 2013-2014. Work previously exhibited in the San Diego / Tijuana Border Region - whether theatrically at another local festival or broadcast on television, - is not eligible to apply. A panel of distinguished curators from the San Diego and Tijuana community will select the films and videos to be screened during the "Official Selection" of the festival. All entries will be pre-screened for eligibility by curators, however, not all entries will be programmed.

Films must be submitted with English subtitles if the dialogue is in a language other than English. Films must have been completed after January 2013. Because we use entry fees to make grants to filmmakers, fee waivers will not be granted. Exceptions will only be made for non-profit organizations and international governmental organizations.

Upon acceptance to the festival, a press kit is required, to include the following:

Features: 100 word synopsis in English, 2 hi-res film stills (300dpi, Cmyk color), digital trailer

Shorts: 50 word synopsis in English, 1 hi-res film still (300dpi, Cmyk color)

Optional: digital trailer

For exhibition the following formats will be accepted:

Features: 35mm, HDCam, Blu-ray, Dcp. Features must be received by March 1, 2014

Shorts: must be received by February 1, 2014 in Digital format via Usb or email using a file sharing service like DropBox or HighTail (Previously YouSendIt). USBs will not be returned.

*Submitters will be notified by January 4, 2014. Judges’ decisions are final. Due to the large number of films we receive, feedback on individual films will not be provided. Films entered after the November 8 deadline will not be reviewed or returned.

An additional panel of distinguished filmmakers, film critics, and actors will sit on this year's Awards Jury. Awards are given for excellence in form and content. Films to be considered for competition will be determined by the Festival Curator.

Atrocious is definitely low-budget and doesn’t break any barriers regarding production quality or performances. Atrocious is a Spanish/Mexican found footage about a family that was found murdered in their countryside home. The movie shows the video evidence that the police found 37 hours after the insidinent. People en Espanol's "50 Most Beautiful" issue celebrates its 15th annual edition, honoring the hottest and freshest names in Hispanic entertainment. This year the magazine goes back in time to depict four iconic decades: the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. The exclusive photographs were shot by celebrity photographer Omar Cruz on location in a total of six major cities: New York, Miami, Orlando, Los Angeles, Mexico City and London.

Helping to commemorate the issue are two special honorees; Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias, who was featured in the magazine's first ever Bellos issue; and Sofia Vergara, who has appeared on this list an incredible six times. University of Texas alum and writer/director Jack Zagha Kababie makes his feature film debut at the Austin Film Festival this year with Adios Mundo Cruel (Goodbye Cruel World), a delightfully understated dark comedy from Mexico. Reminiscent of Jean Pierre-Jeunet's film Micmacs, the story focuses on an individual who through an unfortunate turn of events is pulled into a ragtag group of thieves and their world of crime. However, Adios Mundo Cruel is much more subtle and accessible to audiences who are able to identify to the main character's job situation and marriage woes.
