She was 95.

General Hospital actor and friend of Hirson Chris McKenna shared the news on Instagram, writing, “Alice Hirson shone her light on this world for 95 glorious years. My family and I were so blessed to have her in our lives however briefly. Unforgettable woman. Her final words were ‘It’s nice to have an audience.’ Thank you, Alice. Good night. Legend.”

As Lois Morgan, mother of DeGeneres’ character Ellen Morgan, Hirson was part of one of the 1990s most controversial TV stories. After Ellen came out as gay in the April 1997 episode “The Puppy Episode,” the title...

Covid was 4th leading cause of death among Americans in 2022: US CDC
Image
Washington, May 5 (Ians) Covid-19 was the fourth leading cause of death among Americans in 2022, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

More than 3.2 million persons died in the US during January to December 2022.

Heart disease remained the top reason for death, followed by cancer, unintentional injuries — which includes drug overdoses and car accidents — and Covid.

However, the death rate in 2022 decreased by 5.3 per cent, from 879.7 per 100,000 persons in 2021 to 832.8.

While heart disease and cancer deaths increased in 2022 compared with 2021, deaths associated with Covid decreased.

Covid-19 was the underlying cause for 5.7 per cent of all deaths in 2022, decreasing from 12 per cent in 2021.

Overall, Covid-associated death rate among males (76.3) was higher compared with that among females (49.8).

It also decreased from 2021 to 2022 among groups more than 15 years of age, while the rate increased for all age groups under 15 years. However, the CDC has not given the reason behind this.

The Stephen King Story Inspired By A Real Life Serial Killer
Image
Stephen King isn’t shy when it comes to talking about what has inspired his works, and one story was inspired by an infamous real-life serial killer. Stephen King has terrorized generations of readers for decades, and it all started in 1974 with the publishing of Carrie. Since then, King has allowed readers to explore a variety of fears and meet different creatures and monsters (both human and supernatural) in his novels and short-stories, which have been so successful they have been adapted to other media, as are the cases of Misery, It, and The Shining, just to name a few.

When it comes to what inspires Stephen King’s terrifying tales, the King of Horror has been quite open about the many sources and influences for his works, and he has written characters based on people he met at school (like Carrie White), his own mother (Dolores Clairbone), and even himself,...

Square Brings Credit Card Swiping to the Mobile Masses, Starting Today
Now that Square is publicly available for iPhone and Android Os, with millions of card readers being shipped free of charge, Jack Dorsey tells Fast Company how his business model will disrupt the way you pay.

Starting today, Square aims to make credit card sales as easy for retailers with an iPhone as it is for some dude selling a couch on Craigslist.

With Square, anyone can accept credit or debit card payments by downloading the app and plugging a little plastic cube into the headphone jack of an iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or Android phone. After a quick swipe of the card through the reader, the merchant turns the device over to the customer to sign his or her name on the touchscreen using a finger instead of a pen. The customer can add a tip, either by percentage or a particular amount, and then enters their phone number or email address.
