For over fifty years, Francis Ford Coppola has been a towering, and often controversial, figure in American Cinema. His filmography is one of the most legendary of all time and includes some of the greatest movies ever made like The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974), The Conversation (1974), Apocalypse Now (1979), and more. It also includes wild swings—One from the Heart (1982), Rumble Fish (1983), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)—which sometimes paid off, but sometimes did not. This year, his forty-year-in-the-making passion project Megalopolis finally hit screens for the general public after a festival run that provoked a mixed critical response to say the least. It is a gigantic movie made on a huge budget with vast, and sometimes impenetrable, ideas. Written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Dementia 13 was one of the directors first films. This makes for interesting viewing, especially when it was also produced by Roger Corman. So does the movie show any of the hallmarks of his future films?

When Louise’s (Luana Anders) husband Peter dies of a heart attack she decides to hide the fact he is dead so she can get her hands on his inheritance. When she goes to visit his families home in an attempt to make sure things go to plan, she is unaware of what awaits her at the family estate that holds a deadly secret.

One of the first things that is noticeable in Dementia 13 is the fact it has a Hitchcockian feel to the film.

One of the best director debuts of the 1960s is Francis Coppola’s earnest effort to deliver a marketable thriller to producer Roger Corman, a gory, sexy horror show that will get past the censor. The 21-year-old student filmmaker comes through in high style. The spirited tale of axe murders on an Irish estate brings back a time when a talented beginner could hit a $40,000 movie out of the park. It’s been reconstituted to Coppola’s preferred cut after sixty years in Public Domain purgatory, and he provides a new commentary that will please his fans as well as lovers of the horror genre.

Following his recent director's cuts for Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut and The Cotton Club Encore, Coppola went into his own private collection to restore his directorial debut from 1963.

Though relegated to the sidelines for much of her time at A.I.P., Luana Anders could at least point to her starring role in Francis Ford Coppola’s first legitimate feature, Dementia 13. It was after hearing his pitch about a mysterious psycho killer that producer Roger Corman gave Coppola the funds to proceed—and though an unhappy Corman asked Jack Hill to shoot additional footage to spruce up what he considered Coppola’s too-stately efforts, the fledgling director was on his way to a legendary career.

During the early fifties, an anxious era that leaned on fanciful songs like Faraway Places, Beyond the Sea and Robert Maxwell’s Ebb Tide, Curtis Harrington wrote a similarly dreamy fable called The Girl from Beneath the Sea. The 34 year old director’s script was finally produced in 1960 and premiered as Night Tide at the Spoleto Film Festival in 1961. Thanks to Filmgroup, Roger Corman’s distribution company, the movie reached American theaters in 1963. Instead of the windswept romance of Maxwell’s song, ticket buyers were treated to a fatalistic thriller with the unpredictable qualities of a New Wave film.

According to actor and film historian Douglas Dunning, the 50th anniversary screening of Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider will take place at Laemmle’s Ahrya Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills on Saturday, September 7th, 2019 at 7:30 pm. The film runs 95 minutes. The 1969 film, which stars Peter Fonda, director Hopper, Jack Nicholson, Karen Black, Toni Basil, and Luana Anders among many others, will be followed by a tribute to the late Peter Fonda.

The new Dementia 13 trailer shows that some children won’t stay submerged.

Chiller Films has dropped the trailer for the upcoming retelling of Francis Ford Coppola’s atmospheric 1963 debut film Dementia 13, which was produced by independent movie maestro Roger Corman.

“A vengeful ghost, a mysterious killer, and a family where everyone has a secret converge in one night of terror,” the official synopsis promises.

The reimaging was directed by Richard LeMay (Blood Bound, Naked As We Come). Dementia 13 was written by Dan DeFilippo, who wrote the screenplays for The Invaders and Chilling Visions: 5 States of Fear) and Justin Smith (SiREN, The Boy).

The original movie told the tale of Luana Anders a scheming young woman who murders her husband and infiltrates his disturbing family’s stately, out-of-the-way mansion on a lake in Ireland. Her plans are interrupted by an axe-wielding lunatic who stalks and hacks up the family.

To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, a screening of the film will occur at this year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival on Friday, July 8th. This week has been a good week for Vincent Price fans and Arrow Video. Not only have we got Theatre of Blood, we now also have Pit and the Pendulum in another steelbook release. The Pit and the Pendulum is the second film in Roger Corman’s Edgar Allen Poe series of films (Fall of the House of Usher was first), and although Masque of the Red Death is arguably the better, this is a close second.

When you are a true movie geek some titles become a sort of Holy Grail. When I was a monster kid growing up in the 60’s I read Castle of Frankenstein magazine avidly (one of the greatest magazines ever published by the way!) That periodical discussed so many movies that I just knew I would never get a chance to see, foreign films, independent films, odd ball avant garde’ experimental films, it made me determined to see them by any means necessary.

I recall reading about Night Tide in Castle of Frankenstein and wanting to see it very badly. I didn’t get to view that title until sometime in the 90s. Awesome news cult movie fans! Film Chest is making Dementia 13 available to fans, restored and in Blu-ray HD for the first time ever. For years, it was rumored that this Corman/Coppola shocker had mysteriously disappeared, but thanks to HD CInema Classics and Film Chest it's been recovered.

Produced by celebrated B-movie icon Roger Corman and directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola, 1963’s terror-ific Dementia 13 is available on DVD/Blu-ray combo pack April 26 (though Amazon says March 29?).

Considered Coppola’s first mainstream, “legitimate” directorial effort, this gothic psychological thriller – based on a story idea Corman penned in one night – was shot for a budget of $42,000. The majority of the American actors were college pals of Coppola, many of whom paid their own way to Ireland for the opportunity to appear in a film.
