Ena Hartman, a pioneering Black actress who had a regular role opposite Burt Reynolds on the 1970-71 ABC cop show Dan August, has died. She was 93.

Hartman died April 16 of natural causes at her home in Van Nuys, her goddaughter Lorraine Foxworth told The Hollywood Reporter.

Hartman also is known for her starring turn as the tough girl Carmen Simms alongside Tom Selleck, Don Marshall, Roger E. Mosley, Phyllis Davis and Marta Kristen in the cult prison-set film Terminal Island (1973), written and directed by Stephanie Rothman.

She assisted Lee J. Cobb’s character in the spy spoof Our Man Flint (1966), starring James Coburn; played a party guest in Games (1967), starring James Caan, Simone Signoret and Katharine Ross; and was a flight attendant in Airport (1970).

The Six Million Dollar Man (1973-1978): Gone But Not Forgotten
Image
The 70s were a time when television would seem to try anything at least once. Science Fiction was one of the main genres where this was very true. Thanks to the success of series like Star Trek, and Lost in Space there was a deluge of, off beat and actually good genre TV (as we explored on last week’s Land of the Lost episode). Typically it was with some sort of toy tie-in or angle to get children to watch and/or buy something. And just wait until Star Wars happened.

But, the early 70s would find a new kind of hero to grab the hearts and minds of kids across the country and he’d bring with him some of the coolest toys around. Because, he was literally made up of metal and plastic himself.

The Six Million Dollar Man would jump into television history with a premise that was brilliant,...

Ben Burtt on How Modern Hollywood Has Lost a Sensitivity for Sound, Lightsabers, and the Wilhelm Scream
Image
It’s mid-July and I’m sitting in my living room, wondering what Ben Burtt, a man responsible for some of the most beloved cultural artifacts of the 20th century, will think of the decor. He appears on my screen calling from Locarno, where he’s just received a lifetime achievement award. I start by thanking him genuinely for his contributions to cinema, and something in that choice of words makes him blush.

Burtt was born in Jamestown, New York, in 1948. Like many of his contemporaries, he got his start in the industry working at Roger Corman’s New World Pictures, making sound effects on the trailer for Death Race 2000. From there his credits more or less read like a greatest-hits of American popular culture. In his roll as sound designer, Burtt is credited with creating Chewbacca’s roar, the lightsaber’s hum, and the crack of Indiana Jones’ whip.

10 Classic Epic War Movies That Are Still Impressive Today
Image
The war movie genre has made for some of the best, most influential movies of all time. Ever since Georges Mlis made what is widely regarded as one of the first ever war films, Sea Fighting in Greece in 1897, the genre has evolved and produced a lot of iconic films. While cinema evolves, the quality of films from a certain era doesn't change, and some are still regarded as hugely important works of art that have stood the test of time.

Naturally, many war movies haven't aged well, but in some cases, impactful war movies can emotionally stick with you forever. Like any film genre, the war movie can take on many guises. Some may depict the brutality of combat with hard-hitting battle scenes regardless of their accuracy, while others may delve deeper into the psyches of the people involved in the conflict. However, for a war movie to be considered a classic,...

Forbidden Planet (1956)
Warner Bros. Developing a New Version of 1950s Sci-fi Classic ‘Forbidden Planet’
Forbidden Planet (1956)
One of all time classics of the science fiction genre, 1956’s Forbidden Planet is getting a modern day update from Warner Bros., Deadline has exclusively reported this week.

Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man) is writing the screenplay, with Emma Watts producing.

Deadline’s report details, “For its forward-thinking themes, the film is considered a north star for science fiction writing and cinema that came after it. It has never had a big-screen remake — though James Cameron reportedly once considered it — partly because the rights were complicated and difficult to untangle.

“The studio and Watts finally got that major obstacle out of the way,” Deadline continues. “The former studio chief Watts has leaned into producing the big ambitious tentpoles she shepherded from the executive suites, and this has the makings to be one of those.”

In the original movie from director Fred M. Wilcox, “A starship crew in the...

Wilcox and featured a leading cast including Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen, Jack Kelly, Richard Anderson, and Warren Stevens.

As per Deadline, a reboot of Forbidden Planet is now in the works. The film is being developed by Warner Bros. and it will be produced by Emma Watts. The screenwriter for the project will be Brian K. Vaughan. The cast and character details for the Forbidden Planet are yet to be revealed. Additionally, the extent to which the reboot will follow the original's plot is unknown.

10 Best Squads In War Movies
Image
Warning: Article contains mentions of racism, anti-Semitism, and Nazism.War movies have left, and continue to leave, an endearing mark on filmmaking. Some of the best war movies are elevated by the presence of a squadron of soldiers within their narrative, ensembles of characters that continually captivate audiences with their intense and emotional portrayals of camaraderie, loyalty, and shared hardships. These war movie squads are the beating hearts of their films, and have become just as iconic as the war movies themselves.

Whether they endear themselves to audiences through their daring deeds, razor-sharp banter, or steadfast resilience, these squads often embody the persistence of the human spirit while fueling a compelling story, often about the horrors of war. Without these ensembles, it is likely that their own movies may not be so revered today. From the tale of a group of rebels in a galaxy far, far away, to a...

Ben Burtt says he “created a monster” with the Wilhelm Scream
Image
Arrrgghhhh! We all know the Wilhelm Scream, the iconic piece of audio that has been featured in countless movies and TV shows over the decades, but Ben Burtt, the man credited with rediscovering it for the original Star Wars movie, told THR that he had “created a monster.“

The Wilhelm Scream can be traced back to Distant Drums, a 1951 Western starring Gary Cooper. It found its way into Warner Bros.’ stock sound library and was used in many other films, but it achieved fame when Burtt put it into Star Wars as part of an in-joke with his friends.

Related Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net: Labyrinth, Spider-Man, The Nightmare Before Christmas

“It was a scream I first heard as a child. I recorded it off the television. It was in many of the Warner Bros. films in the 1950s and ’60s. It was a stock scream in their library,...

Gettysburg Movie True Story: 7 Biggest Changes
Image
Gettysburg is often applauded for its historical accuracies, but there are some facts about the true story behind the 1993 film that director Ronald F. Maxwell had to change for the big screen. The epic war drama is based on Michael Shaara's 1974 historical novel The Killer Angels, which recounts the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 during the American Civil War and the days leading up to the tragic fight. The movie is a little over four hours long to account for the intricacies of the notorious battle and be as accurate to history and The Killer Angels as possible.

Following the release of Gettysburg in 1993, it received overflowing positive reviews. Film critics loved it, but many historians were amazed by the thought and detail that went into the making of the film. But, of course, despite it being one of the most historically accurate movies ever made,...

Kino boosts the third United Artists Stanley Kubrick classic to 4K clarity, bringing out every nuance of the director’s fine B&w imagery. Kubrick’s major career achievement this time was forming a mutually positive relationship with a big star. Their show is an artful anti-militaristic shout that accuses the French officer corps of willful murder. Producer-star Kirk Douglas gets the best grandstanding soapbox of his career, while Kubrick proves he can shape a dozen fine performances into a mainstream movie masterpiece.

Kitten with a Whip
Image
Showbiz dynamo Ann-Margret tries on ‘teenage hellion’ for size. She terrorizes the straight, impossibly patient John Forsythe, sending him on a weekend ordeal with razor-wielding hooligans. He can kiss both his marriage and his political ambitions goodbye: who will believe David when Jody claims he took advantage of her? Douglas Heyes’ sordid suspense thriller has a loser reputation but is big fun in the star-watching game: Ann-Margret has no choice but to go way over the top and chew scenery, and the direction doesn’t offer enough support. The technical remaster is excellent, and the disc extras generous.

John Sturges’ first color western is a tightly organized and unpretentious winner about a stern Union prison warden and a Confederate prisoner teaming up to fight an Apache enemy … wait, that sounds familiar. William Holden and Eleanor Parker strike sparks out on the ruddy mesas, while Sturges has a field day with the amazing Death Valley scenery and a highly original action scene. ‘Realistic escapism?’ It’s like a formula for future action cinema. From ‘Star Wars’ To ‘Top Gun’: Director Midge Costin Explores Power Of Cinematic Sound In Awards-Contending Doc ‘Making Waves’
Ben Burtt
Imagine a light saber without its ominous hum, R2D2 without his squeals and beeps, or a Wookie without his bleat.

That’s the impoverished reality we might face without the inspired work of Ben Burtt, sonic Jedi Knight behind the original Star Wars. He’s one of the creative pioneers discussed in the documentary Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound, a film by Midge Costin that celebrates the unsung contributions of Hollywood’s great sound designers.

How Burtt obtained the throaty vocalizations for Chewbacca, for example, involved a visit to a young bear in a pen.

“The way they got it to make sound was to show it bread. It loved bread,” Richard Anderson, one of Burtt’s sound colleagues on Star Wars, recalls in the documentary. The bear’s pining for yeasty treats became the Wookie’s plaintive wails, with Chewie’s more contented sounds coming from...

‘Star Wars’ Team on Creating Chewbacca, Wookiee Noises in ‘The Art of Cinematic Sound’
George Lucas
“I knew the sound was part of the foundation of what the movie was going to be,” George Lucas explains in this exclusive clip from Midge Costin’s “Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound.” Ben Burtt, sound designer on “Star Wars,” goes on to explain how the team originally created the legendary sounds used for Chewbacca and the wookiees in the franchise.

The trick, he says in the clip, was spending time with a young bear and using bread to coax the sounds from the animal. The words from the film team, also including sound editor Richard Anderson, mesh with footage of Han Solo talking to Chewbacca. Peter Mayhew, who played the iconic wookiee, died in April.

“Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound” premiered in the Cannes Classics documentary section. It takes a historical journey through sound design within cinema from its early beginnings to modern-day blockbuster films,...

Six Billion Dollar Man Gets Wiped Off Warner Bros.' Release Slate
Mark Wahlberg
It looks like the wait to see Mark Wahlberg in The Six Billion Dollar Man just got a lot longer. Warner Bros. has announced that they have pulled the movie from their release schedule, leaving an opening for Wonder Woman 1984 to take the June 5th, 2020 release date. The studio purchased the rights for The Six Billion Dollar man project from the Weinstein Company and has yet to announce a director for the project, after teasing that the script had been chosen and then announcing the release date.

The Six Billion Dollar Man was originally going to be released in December of 2017, but that didn't end up happening, since it was taken off of the release schedule earlier in June 2016. Warner Bros. took over the project and set a release date of May 31st, 2019, only to have that release date pushed back to June 5th, 2020. Now, the movie has completely...

In January of 1972 ABC broadcast the story of a middle-aged newsman hot on the trail of a vampire seemingly escaped from a 50’s horror comic. The man and the monster had one thing in common – by the 70’s they were both anachronisms, adrift in an era of hot pants and roller disco.

Carl Kolchak, the overbearing reporter played by crusty TV vet Darren McGavin, was not simply immune to current fashions – his steadfast belief in the supernatural ensured his outsider status throughout two films and 20 hour-long episodes broadcast between 1974 and 1975.

The first of those movies was The Night Stalker, a nocturnal thriller animated by the lurid neon of the Vegas strip where a string of showgirl...

The Long, Hot Summer
Barns are a-burning, Paul Newman is recommended to Joanne Woodward as ‘a big stud horse’ and Lee Remick oozes sexuality all over Martin Ritt’s CinemaScope screen. William Faulkner may be the literary source, but this tale of ambition in the family of yet another southern Big Daddy is given the faux Tennessee Williams treatment — it’s a grand soap opera with a fistful of great stars having a grand time.

Compulsion
This classy Fox production was considered the epitome of sick film subject matter in the pre- Psycho year of 1959, the true story of jazz-age thrill killers Leopold & Loeb. Dean Stockwell and Bradford Dillman are the nihilistic child murderers; Orson Welles stops the show with his portrayal of Clarence Darrow, going under a different name.

Richard Anderson, who portrayed Oscar Goldman, the head of a secret scientific government organization, on the 1970s series The Six Million Dollar Man and its spinoff, The Bionic Woman, died Thursday. He was 91.

Anderson, who was mentored by nice guy Cary Grant and received a huge career boost when he was cast in Stanley Kubrick’s anti-war classic Paths of Glory (1957), died at his home in Beverly Hills, publicist Jonathan Taylor announced.

A frequent authority figure onscreen, Anderson also portrayed a colonel in another notable war film, the Rod Serling-scripted Seven Days in May (1964), and he operated on...

Collins' Sex Novels Have Enjoyed Unexpectedly Few Film Versions (The Stud, The Bitch)
Joan Collins in 'The Bitch': Sex tale based on younger sister Jackie Collins' novel. Author Jackie Collins dead at 77: Surprisingly few film and TV adaptations of her bestselling novels Jackie Collins, best known for a series of bestsellers about the dysfunctional sex lives of the rich and famous and for being the younger sister of film and TV star Joan Collins, died of breast cancer on Sept. 19, '15, in Los Angeles. The London-born (Oct. 4, 1937) Collins was 77. Collins' tawdry, female-centered novels – much like those of Danielle Steel and Judith Krantz – were/are immensely popular. According to her website, they have sold more than 500 million copies in 40 countries. And if the increasingly tabloidy BBC is to be believed (nowadays, Wikipedia has become a key source, apparently), every single one of them – 32 in all – appeared on the New York Times' bestseller list. (Collins' own site claims that a mere 30 were included.) Sex...

Wright Was Earliest Surviving Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winner
Teresa Wright: Later years (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright: From Marlon Brando to Matt Damon.") Teresa Wright and Robert Anderson were divorced in 1978. They would remain friends in the ensuing years.[1] Wright spent most of the last decade of her life in Connecticut, making only sporadic public appearances. In 1998, she could be seen with her grandson, film producer Jonah Smith, at New York's Yankee Stadium, where she threw the ceremonial first pitch.[2] Wright also became involved in the Greater New York chapter of the Als Association. (The Pride of the Yankees subject, Lou Gehrig, died of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in 1941.) The week she turned 82 in October 2000, Wright attended the 20th anniversary celebration of Somewhere in Time, where she posed for pictures with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. In March 2003, she was a guest at the 75th Academy Awards, in the segment showcasing Oscar-winning actors of the past. Two years later,...

Lee Majors in The Six Million Dollar Man (1973)
Is Mark Wahlberg the New 'Six Million Dollar Man'?
Lee Majors in The Six Million Dollar Man (1973)
We've heard murmurs of Universal Pictures attempting to resurrect the old 1974 TV series The Six Million Dollar Man for sometime now. It looks as though the studio is ready to get serious about the project, and they want Mark Wahlberg to take on the role of Steve Austin in this new big screen franchise.

This latest news comes from Tracking Board, and should be considered a rumor until otherwise confirmed. Universal Pictures has no comment at this time.

The Six Million Dollar Man follows the story of astronaut Steve Austin, whose body gets rebuilt with new cybernetic technology after a nearly fatal aircraft accident. With super human powers and strength, he becomes a special agent for the government.

Peter Berg, who just directed Mark Wahlberg in the war thriller Lone Survivor, is attached to produce and could possibly direct. Harvey Weinstein is also currently attached to produce.

Is Mark Wahlberg Universal’s New Six Million Dollar Man?
They can rebuild him. They have the technology. But will audiences even care? That’s the question that Universal is facing now, as The Tracking Board reports that the studio is trying yet again to assemble a reboot of the beloved 1974 series The Six Million Dollar Man.

A remake of The Six Million Dollar Man has been in the works for decades. First came a screenplay from Kevin Smith in the 1990s that he eventually adapted into a comic book titled The Bionic Man. Then came a comedic take starring Jim Carrey from The Hangover writer/director Todd Phillips, followed by an attempt in 2006 from Richard Anderson (who had a supporting role in the original series), which never materialized due to a fight between Miramax and Universal over the rights to the property. Universal then tried again in 2011, with Bryan Singer in the director’s chair and Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role.
