If You Loved Happy Gilmore 2, You’ll Adore These 5 Comedy Films
Image
28 years after the release of Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler is back with his sequel, Happy Gilmore 2. Set 29 years after Happy Gilmore won his first Tour Championship, he now returns to play golf for his daughter’s ballet school.

Just like the first film, the sequel is full of Sandler’s blend of potty‑mouth wit, underdog grit, and heartfelt redemption. The sequel brings back the beloved golf icon nearly three decades after the original, with nostalgic callbacks, the classic soundtrack, and a plot that finds Happy mentoring the next generation while still throwing fastballs (or golf tees) at anyone who gets in his way.

Reuniting Sandler with several of the original stars like Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, Blake Clark, and Christopher McDonald, the film also stars several fresh faces like Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, and his daughters Sadie and Sunny Sandler. A sports comedy drama that would reignite your love for absurd premises,...

The 10 Best Live-Action Comic Book TV Shows Of The 1990s, Ranked
Image
The late 2000s changed everything for comic book movies and TV shows, as the world entered the golden age of programming for the genre. From "Legion" to "The Boys" and "The Penguin," you would be spoiled for choice to pick the best TV shows based on comics now, but what about the time before the big boom? What about the 1990s?

It might seem like a period of famine rather than feast in retrospect, but there were a number of live-action comic book TV shows released in the same decade as the "Macarena" and Tamagotchi. You had "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," "The Flash," and even "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven" to name but a few. Do these series hold up like their modern successors, though? Eh, probably not, but there's still a goofy charm to them that makes them fall firmly into the so-bad-it's-good category of entertainment.

Review: Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s ‘Kingpin’ on Kl Studio Classics 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
The pleasures of Kingpin are multitudinous, but only if one appreciates the lowbrow sensibilities of Bobby and Peter Farrelly as a high-water mark of 1990s American studio comedies. Consider a scene in which Roy (Woody Harrelson), an alcoholic former bowler with a hook for a hand who’s passing as Amish in order to lure the young Anabaptist Ishmael (a 45-year-old Randy Quaid) toward the modern bowling circuit for a big payday, accidentally drinks bull semen. If Voltaire’s Candide introduces its naïve hero to humankind’s degradation of self and other, the Farrelly brothers’ live-action cartoon functions much the same way, albeit through the prism of mid-’90s advertising, sports culture, and adolescent male desire.

One of the objects of such desire is Claudia (Vanessa Angel), the voluptuous girlfriend of a wealthy bowling shark named Stanley (Rob Moran). Emblematic of the film’s devotion to cartoon logic, she runs...

10 Best Movies Set In Nevada, Ranked
Image
Nevada's population is slightly more than 3.2 million, with about 2.3 million living in the Las Vegas metro area. Which means that in a 110,000-square mile state (the seventh largest by land area in the U.S), more than 70% of the population lives in approximately 1,600 square miles. Urban concentration isn't exactly unique to Las Vegas, Nevada, so you're probably wondering why we're bringing it up. It's because Vegas' cultural footprint is larger than the state where it resides: Nevada. Except for New York City, maybe no other American city completely overwhelms the cinematic representation of its state. When it comes to Nevada, that's a mistake.

After all, The Silver State on the silver screen is much more than Sin City. It's westerns, sci-fi, romantic comedies, and even a few Best Picture winners. While there is no shortage of all-time classics set in Sin City, we're only going to rank the best movies set in Nevada,...

“Weird Science” – Remember When the ’80s Movie Became a ’90s Series? [TV Terrors]
Image
For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the small screen adaptation of 1980s movie “Weird Science,” which aired from 1994 – 1998 on the USA Network.

I probably sound like an old fogy when I say this, but the USA Network of the cable television heyday was drastically different than the USA Network we have today. Back in the early nineties, USA Network was a free for all of weird, fun entertainment. There were adult cartoons, erotic thrillers, “Up All Night,” sports events, a large Saturday morning cartoon line up, classic horror movies, Troma double bills, and there were even kung fu movies every weekday morning.

USA Network also aired the primetime TV series adaptation of “Weird Science.”

The classic John Hughes sci-fi comedy from 1985 was adapted in 1994 into a mostly faithful TV version that took everything scandalous about the original film and amped up the ridiculousness by about fifty percent.

Johnny & Clyde Review: A Mindless Stream of Bloody Violence
Image
Psychopathic serial killer lovers meet their match in a domineering casino boss with a demon on a string. That's the hook for Johnny & Clyde, which dulls the senses with a mindless stream of bloody violence and cartoonish execution. New wave synth pounds your eardrums as despicable lead characters lick each other like everlasting gobstoppers, their grotesque coterie amassing new sadists under a neon red lighting scheme. It's all style and zero substance in a woefully fractured narrative. Megan Fox's sultry villainess offers the only redeeming quality. She gets minor chuckles as a ruthless control freak.

Alana Heart (Fox) entertains an intrepid reporter (Vanessa Angel) in her office as manager of the Four Horses Casino. There are rumors she has a satanic henchman to settle grievances. She laughs at the absurd accusation. Meanwhile, the infamous Johnny (Avan Jogia) and Clyde (Ajani Russell) stop at a highway gas station. The spree...

Johnny & Clyde trailer: Megan Fox crime thriller slasher reaches theatres & VOD this weekend
Image
Vault director Tom DeNucci’s new film Johnny & Clyde is usually referred to as a “crime thriller”, but we’ve also heard that the story shifts gears to become a “balls-to-the-wall slasher/horror” flick. Since I have been a dedicated slasher fan since the 1980s, I’m looking forward to checking it out when it receives a theatrical and VOD release this Friday, May 5th. With the release just a few days away, a trailer for Johnny & Clyde has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Scripted by DeNucci and Nick Principe, Johnny & Clyde follows the two eponymous serial killers who are madly in love and on an endless crime spree. They have their sights set on robbing a prosperous casino run by crime boss Alana and her head of security.

The film stars Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap), Ajani Russell (Betty), Tyson Ritter...

The Best Movie You Never Saw: Kingpin (1996)
Image
Welcome to The Best Movie You Never Saw, a column dedicated to examining films that have flown under the radar or gained traction throughout the years, earning them a place as a cult classic or underrated gem that was either before it’s time and/or has aged like a fine wine.

This week we’ll be looking at Kingpin (1996)!

The Story: A shady, washed-up bowling prodigy (Woody Harrelson) strikes gold when he finds a naïve Amish player (Randy Quaid) he hopes to exploit for profit. The two hit the road with a gangster’s moll (Vanessa Angel) in hopes of striking it rich at a $1 million winner-take-all tournament in Reno.

The Players: Starring: Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid, Vanessa Angel and Bill Murray. Directed by Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly.

Stars: Megan Fox, Vanessa Angel, Avan Jogia, Ajani Russell, Tyson Ritter, Armen Garo, Bai Ling, Robert Lasardo, Charles W Harris III, Nick Principe | Written by Tom DeNucci, Nick Principe | Directed by Tom DeNucci

It’s no coincidence that Johnny & Clyde sounds a lot like Bonnie and Clyde. Helping to usher in a new level of violence in mainstream film Arthur Penn’s film is one of the most influential and imitated films of its time. One can draw a line from Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker to Mickey and Mallory Knox, Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers. And from there to the latest film from director Tom DeNucci and co-writer Nick Principe who is probably better known for lending his imposing presence to films like Laid to Rest and FP2: Beats of Rage.

‘Hustle Down’ Review
Image
Stars: Tom Sizemore, Bai Ling, Paul Sidhu, Kevin Gage, Raymond J. Barry, Vanessa Angel, Noel Gugliemi, David Fernandez Jr., Victorya Brandart, Luis Gatica, Geoffrey Ross, Brad Potts | Written by Benjamin Budd | Directed by R. Ellis Frazier

Like many low budget action films, there is a constant, uneasy tension between ambition and what is possible. Hustle Down is aiming to be a Michael Mann thriller, but the constraints constantly degrade the experience. Whether it is low budget cameras, direction, or uneven acting.

An almost unrecognisable Tom Sizemore (with dyed black hair and looking elderly) is running around (and gosh is it a sad sight) in a cheap shirt, avoiding cartel hitmen.

I barely recognise the wispy voice of Tom Sizemore here, nor his ghoulish countenance and I certainly don’t recognise his ripe acting. He was one of my favourite actors for a long time, and it is so sad to...

Trouble Sleeping Review
Image
We’ve all had trouble sleeping, haven’t we? Thoughts that consume our minds and invade our dreams that we can’t shift…well, unfortunately for Robert Adetuyi’s latest feature film, you won’t have trouble sleeping whilst watching. The ‘Stomp the Yard’ and ‘Honey: Rise up and Dance’ director fails to deliver here; resulting in a distinctively average thriller come dark comedy that certainly won’t plague your mind and keep you up at night.

Curiously somber piano music emerges, setting the tone immediately – especially when we see Billy Zane’s Charles enter the scene. Despite his soothing tones, and romantic demeanor something is awry. The lighting shifts, there is blood down one side of his face and an intimate moment between a seemingly happily married couple quickly turns into something sinister. The clichéd, it-was-all-a-nightmare tangent invades the deliberately disorientating scene wherein we are given the backstory in a somewhat patronising manner.

Vanessa Angel & Billy Zane in Indie Thriller 'Trouble Sleeping' Trailer
Robert Adetuyi
"My wife is not your patient, Doctor, Justin is." An official trailer has debuted for this indie psychological thriller titled Trouble Sleeping, made by the Canadian filmmaker Robert Adetuyi. This has taken years to finally get a release after first unveiling in 2018, but perhaps there's a reason it has taken so long. Just take a look at the trailer below. Tormented by the memories of her late-husband's suicide, a woman's life is further complicated by the arrival of her stepson, who apparently will soon inherit all of his father's wealth. But something else is amiss. The film stars Vanessa Angel, Billy Zane, Rick Otto, Ingrid Eskeland, Kale Clauson, and Fred Stoller. This film looks especially forgettable and bland, it's so obvious what's going on from this trailer you can probably figure out exactly how it's going to end. Skip this one - it's not worth it. Here's the official trailer...

Kingpin Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary: Is It the Farrelly Brothers' Most Underrated Movie?
Image
Back in the 90s, if you were looking for a road trip movie full of juvenile toilet humor and slapstick comedy then you would never be far away from a Farrelly Brothers movie. After paving the way with Dumb and Dumber, their second feature film, Kingpin, made sure the world of ten pin bowling was never seen in quite the same light again. The Farrellys had a way of tapping into the raucous comedies of the '80s and combining the most outrageous parts of them together, before cranking everything up to eleven. As Kingpin reaches its 25th anniversary, was the movie worthy of its low ratings and box office return, or was it an under-appreciated, if slightly smeared, gem.

Kingpin tells the story of Roy Munson (Woody Harrelson), a pro-bowler who after winning a contest against the somewhat deranged Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray) ends up losing his hand and...

It follows Cully (Sizemore), a two-bit hustler and the driver for a Baja drug cartel, who finds himself relying on skilled-but-reluctant bounty hunter, to stay out of the grasps of a merciless assassin, and vicious thugs led by a rival gang leader after he steals a money car stuffed with cash meant for his boss.

Robert Beaumont produced, Benjamin Budd wrote the screenplay.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Gravitas and excited to see how North American movie-goers receive...

Kingpin 2 Is Happening with the Farrelly Brothers Producing?
Image
A sequel to Kingpin is reportedly in the works. Released in 1996, the original Kingpin was a bowling-themed sports comedy directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly. Starring Woody Harrelson, it followed a professional bowler who becomes the manager of a promising Amish talent (Randy Quaid). The comedy doesn't seem to generate the same amount of love as other Farrelly Brothers titles from its era, like Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary, but it's a rather enjoyable and underrated movie.

Now, it appears that the ball is rolling forward on Kingpin 2 about 25 years after the release of the first movie. Per Collider, the Farrelly Brothers are set to produce the sequel, which is now in "active development" at Village Roadshow Pictures. It's unclear at this time if the Farrelly Brothers will also come back to direct or if they'll be involved with the screenplay, though it's noted that the original...

Hot Water Review: Fun In the Sun with Competitive Jet Skiing
Lisa Ray, Sarala Kariyawasam, and John Abraham in Water (2005)
Despite the snow that just pounded my town today in furious squalls, summer is just around the corner.

And what says summer better than a rousing beach comedy?

It wasn't only interest in getting back in the water that turned me on to Hot Water.

Over the last year, I've come into a wealth of knowledge about jet skis, yet I've never been aboard. It turns out that Hot Water provides plenty of simulated jetski action. But that's not all.

Hot Water takes your mind off of your societal woes for a while.

The flick is written and directed by Larry Rippenkroeger, a successful stuntman with 26 years in the profession behind him, ten of which he was Bruce Willis' personal stunt double, who also happened to have a previous career as a -- you guessed it -- a pro jet skier!

Hot Water's logline is "The hilarious misadventures of...

Anthony Michael Hall, Kelly LeBrock, and Ilan Mitchell-Smith in Weird Science (1985)
The Stars of "Weird Science" -- See What They Look Like 30 Years Later!
Anthony Michael Hall, Kelly LeBrock, and Ilan Mitchell-Smith in Weird Science (1985)
30 years ago today, two geeks from Shermer, Illinois created Lisa, the perfect woman, with a little computer know-how. That's right, "Weird Science" came out exactly three decades ago and was the third film John Hughes stepped behind the camera for as director, following "The Breakfast Club" and "Sixteen Candles." The flick was also the fourth time Hughes had worked with star Anthony Michael Hall, who appeared in both of the aforementioned films, as well as the Hughes-penned "Vacation." Fun fact: Hall reportedly chose this flick over doing a "Vacation" sequel -- thus starting a franchise tradition of switching the actors playing the Griswold children each film. Joining Hall were Ilan Mitchell-Smith and Kelly LeBrock, a former model who turned her sights towards acting. "Weird Science" went on to become a cult classic and spawned a USA series of the same name, with Vanessa Angel taking over the role of Lisa.

The Premiere of "Dumb & Dumber To" Had the Most Throwback Guest List Ever
The first "Dumb and Dumber" came out way back in 1994, so it's no surprise last night's premiere for the sequel, "Dumb and Dumber To," was packed full of stars that made us feel a little nostalgic.Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels paid homage to their on-screen alter-egos by dressing in suits similar to the tuxedos they famously sported in the '90s flick. The two also showed up to the red carpet in one very familiar vehicle: The Mutt Cutts van!But the flashbacks didn't stop there. While original film star (and Carrey ex-wife) Lauren Holly was sadly Mia, another pair of '90s women caught our eyes.Vanessa Angel -- who starred in one of the Farrelly Brothers' other films, "Kingpin," as well as the TV version of "Weird Science" -- looked sexy as ever in black leather and lace. Now 47, Angel most recently appeared on an episode of...

Your 2013 Halloween Season TV Preview (abridged) with Schedules
Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

So here’s the 2013 Halloween Seasonal TV Preview,...

Gay Israelis vs. Unkosher Twin Witch-slayers
Yossi

Eytan Fox's superb sequel to his award-winning love story, Yossi & Jagger (2002), has finally arrived. The original told of two Israeli soldiers situated on the Lebanese border, whose clandestine love affair was struggling to survive in a friendly yet homophobic atmosphere. Jagger, who was a little more out there, did his darnedest to loosen up Yossi (Ohad Knoller), begging him to quit the army and live with him in a more tolerant ambiance such as the one Tel Aviv could furnish. The rosy vision unsettled Yossi, but not for long. Jagger was killed in an ambush - - and buried as a brave heterosexual, at least in the eyes of his parents and his compatriots.

Now jump a decade ahead. Dr. Yossi Hoffman is a highly respected cardiologist, yet a lonely, slightly out-of-shape homosexual. A workaholic, he refuses to take vacations, and his free evenings are neatly eviscerated by TV shows with laugh tracks.

Hansel & Gretel Warriors of Witchcraft and Ghoul Bring the Youthful Horror to DVD this January
A ravenous ghoul terrorizes a cast member of “Modern Family”. A Twilight wolfman and his real-life sister go hunting for supernatural evil. Younger horror fans get to start the new year off with Ghoul and Hansel & Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft on DVD.

Who would have ever thought Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters would inspire so many b-movie knock-offs? Sure, we’re only talking two, but that’s still two more than I would have expected.

While The Asylum’s Hansel & Gretel name-only mockbuster takes a more modern horror approach, Lionsgate has one that looks to be more of a tweener-friendly version of the R-rated big screen version. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, allow me to introduce you to Hansel & Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft.

Jonah And Ella Mazer (Hansel and Gretel) were happy, normal teenagers–sent to an elite boarding school. The Headmaster, Sebastian, seems to know more about the brother and sister than they know about themselves.

New Release: Cougar Hunting DVD
Cougar Hunting, yet another sexy comedy about a bunch of guys in their 20s and their adventures with women of an older but sexually provocative persuasion, is coming to DVD from Screen Media on Aug. 2 for a list price of $24.98.

The three young men—played by Matt Prokop, Jareb Dauplaise and Randy Wayne—head out to Aspen to jump on the cougar cruising train, encountering such lovely ladies who apparently fit the description as Vanessa Angel (Spies Like Us) and Lara Flynn Boyle (TV’s The Practice), as well as the notably younger Jillian Murray (Wild Things: Foursome).

When we reviewed the movie Cougars, Inc. last month, we opined that “Cougars” were fast becoming a stale topic, having been a hot subject for quickie comedies and DVD Premieres a couple of years back. (For examples, check out Cougar Club, Cougars 101 and Cougar School.) We were going to amend our theory...
