Though it didn’t inaugurate the French New Wave, François Truffaut’s 1959 debut feature, The 400 Blows, did herald the true arrival of the movement, netting the critic turned filmmaker a best director award at the Cannes Film Festival and rave reviews around the globe. Drawing heavily from his own childhood, as well as inspiration from Italian neorealism and 1950s Hollywood melodramas such as Rebel Without a Cause, Truffaut charts the antics of bright but unruly misfit Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud), who, without a sense of purpose, consistently gets into trouble with teachers and his parents.
Truffaut’s kinetic and restless camera style is keyed to the boundless energy of youth, and even the most carefully blocked and framed shots have a feel of spontaneity to them. But The 400 Blows ultimately belongs to Léaud. Flashing hints of innocence and yearning that recall James Dean’s smoldering intensity, the 14-year-old...

Read the novel’s synopsis below:
One rainy night, Antoine gets dropped off at his grandparents’ remote house in the middle of the woods. While his absent father searches for his mysteriously missing mother, Antoine is stuck between a doting grandmother and a grandfather openly hostile to his presence, and time crawls by while he waits to hear from his parents. But when Antoine ventures out with his grandfather to forage for mushrooms, the wrong mushroom leads to a stunning transformation for Antoine. The family’s intergenerational conflict, coupled with the mysterious forces of nature, culminates in a fearsome hunt through the forest that will resolve their differences once and for all — but at what cost?...

MobLand (2025) is a British crime thriller created by Ronan Bennett, known for Ray Donovan. The Paramount+ series stars Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza, a calm but sharp fixer for the Harrigan family—an Irish crime clan based in London. The family is led by Conrad Harrigan (Pierce Brosnan), though it’s Maeve Harrigan (Helen Mirren) who really runs the show from the background.
Directed by Guy Ritchie, Anthony Byrne, Daniel Syrkin, and Lawrence Gough, Season 1 builds a world shaped by power struggles, loyalty, and quiet betrayals. As the man trusted to handle the dirty work, Harry moves between boardroom-style decisions and street-level chaos, doing whatever it takes to keep the Harrigan empire intact.
In this article, I’ll take a deep dive into the series explaining what happened across the season and break down the ending. Please be aware – the article contains spoilers, reader’s discretion is advised.

MobLand’s ending featured Kevin and Bella partaking in some trauma-bonding, Jan stabbing Harry in the chest, and Conrad supposedly celebrating the Harrigans’ victory over the Stevensons. Yeah, so, there was this talk about a rat in the Harrigan household all throughout the show, and the finale revealed that said rat was O’Hara, and she was working for Richie. Harry used O’Hara to wipe out Richie’s whole gang, and then he and Kevin proceeded to barge into Richie’s headquarters to kill him as well as O’Hara. Just like that, the “nuclear war” was over. Since Conrad and Maeve were still in jail, Kevin and Harry were in charge of things. But before giving shape to the future of the crime world in the UK, they decided to give themselves a break, go home, and chill out, I suppose. While Kevin and Bella began to reforge their relationship,...

In February 2025, YouTube turned 20. The video site has gone through a lot over the past two decades, including an acquisition, an earnings glow-up, and multiple generations of star creators. In our 20 Years of YouTube series, we’ll examine the uploads, trends, and influencers that have defined the world’s favorite video site — one year at a time. Click here for a full archive of the series.
By 2010, the YouTube viral video had arguably reached its peak. At the time, the platform’s homepage put the spotlight on trending content while also carving out space to showcase emerging creators in categories like music and gaming. YouTube’s response videos hadn’t been removed yet, and the site’s greatest hits sparked conversation and commentary. One of YouTube’s most notable reaction series, The Fine Bros’ Kids React, had premiered a year prior.

In episode 8 of MobLand, Seraphina was delivered back to her home in the Cotswolds. Even though Maeve had essentially colluded with Richie to orchestrate the shootout in Antwerp and the subsequent kidnapping to Amsterdam to have Seraphina killed, she welcomed her back home. But as soon as she was out of earshot, Maeve began filling Kevin’s ears with poison regarding Seraphina’s supposed “true intentions” and the possibility that she was the rat in the Harrigan household. In addition to that, while talking about who would be Conrad’s successor, Maeve hinted at the fact that, maybe, Eddie wasn’t Kevin’s son; he was actually Conrad’s. Moving on from the Harrigans to the Da Souzas, Harry’s allegiances were heavily questioned because he’d roped Kat McAllister of all people into this mess, supposedly under the guise of helping the Harrigans. However, Harry assured Conrad that he was still on his team.

Emily’s Caught Between Cities & Hearts Again. ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Emily’s not done with Paris — or Rome — just yet. Netflix has officially renewed Emily in Paris for a fifth season, and oui, fans are already plotting their next fashionable binge. The production kicked off in May 2025, starting in Rome before circling back to Emily’s home turf, Paris. So while the release date hasn’t dropped, all signs point to a late 2025 or early 2026 premiere.
Creator Darren Star cleared (Via Deadline) the air: “She didn’t change her Instagram handle to Emily in Rome.” Instead, Emily in Paris Season 5 is embracing a cross-continental vibe. After Season 4 closed with Emily zipping through Rome on a Vespa with Marcello to the tune of Close To You by Gracie Abrams, fans knew the next season would bring Italian heat. But don’t worry — Emily’s iconic Parisian chaos isn’t disappearing. She...

MobLand season 1 episode 7, "Crossroads," might be my favorite of the season thus far, as it finally brings us into the heart of this crime family war. Spoilers below.
While episode 6 kept us glued to the screen for its revelatory insight in the wake of Vron’s (Annie Cooper) death, this week’s episode brings some heated action that is heart-pounding, nerve-wracking, and full of absolute carnage. Brendan (Daniel Betts) only thought he saw carnage as he and Seraphina (Mandeep Dhillon) were being kidnapped, but he has no idea what awaits him.
Episode 7 on Paramount+ has a lot going on, but our main focus is, of course, on Brendan and Seraphina, as well as Harry’s (Tom Hardy) efforts to find and save them, which also yields total f-ing carnage. Before we recap that, let’s set the stage.

Emily in Paris is the kind of fluffy dramedy with a lot of heart that Netflix does well. The series might have become bigger than anyone expected, but we only have ourselves to blame for that. Are some of the relationships on the show frustrating? You betcha. But they are also beautiful.
At the end of Season 4, Emily seemingly fell in love with an Italian fashionista, and she moved into a Rome apartment as she opened a new office for Agence Grateau. A lot was happening, but what else could one expect from a swinging 20-something not yet burdened by a growing family?
Emily deserves good things, too. She is a loyal friend and doesn't take herself too seriously—not yet anyway. But she also knows how to succeed in business and is beginning to make some good money. Still, we care primarily about her lost and gained loves.

Since its inception as one of the premier streaming services, Netflix has been home to some of the best and most iconic action flicks of the past decade.
From big blockbusters that attracted massive viewership to the more under-the-radar gems, these ten action movies are the finest Netflix has to offer.
The 10 best action films on Netflix right now10. The Big 4
From the phenomenal action director Timo Tjahjanto, The Big 4 is just one of the many action films the filmmaker has produced for Netflix. However, unlike his other movies, The Big 4 is as much comedy as action.
The story revolves around four former assassins who emerge from retirement to help a cop solve a mysterious murder. While boasting Tjahjanto’s trademark brutal combat and fight choreography, The Big 4 has an air of lightheartedness and charm that helps it stand out from Netflix’s other offerings in the action genre.

Was Jake Gyllenhaal stuck in a chair while shooting The Guilty? (Photo Credit – Netflix)
Shot in only 11 grueling days, the Netflix thriller pushed Jake Gyllenhaal to his absolute limit, and it all started with a chair. Speaking to The Wrap during TIFF 2021, Gyllenhaal shared how being locked into one seat for the entire shoot felt suffocating. “It was 20 pages a day shooting 20-30 minute takes. And I thrive in that space, but I was trapped in a chair. Antoine trapped me in a chair,” he recalled. Known for his full-bodied performances, Gyllenhaal struggled with being still. “Every time I wanted to move…to only be in a chair and having to express ended up doing a number on me as we got farther and farther into the story.”
The Guilty, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2021, told the story of Joe Bayler — a police detective reassigned to 911 operator duty.

This post contains spoilers from MobLand season 1 episode 4, “Rat Trap.”
The deeper we get into MobLand, the more I feel for Harry (Tom Hardy). He has the weight of the world on his shoulders and is the only thing preventing the fury between two powerful, ready-for-war crime families from unleashing, as both use him to their full advantage.
While episode 3 saw Harry working overtime to keep the warring waters smooth as police received an anonymous tip about where to find Archie’s (Alex Jennings) body, episode 4 sees him go from being a fixer to a suspected rat.
Additionally, Richie (Geoff Bell) makes a decision about Valjon (Peter Ferdinando), a new (suspicious) character claiming to be an old friend of Harry’s shows up, and we're inundated with a bounty of shocking revelations that expose both traumatic secrets and massive secrets, including the full truth behind Tommy’s (Felix Edwards) death.

In the third episode of MobLand, Richie blew up Kevin’s house, but no one was hurt because Kevin and Eddie were in the Cotswolds while Bella was at a hotel. Harry knew that his number was next. So, he put up Jan and Gina at his friend Mike’s boathouse and went off to postpone the gang war that was brewing. Since Eddie was dismissive about his involvement in Tommy’s death, Harry had to create a scapegoat in order to stop Richie from turning London upside down. He set his sights on Valjon and told him that if he took the fall for Eddie, he’d ensure that no harm befalls his family. Valjon was in a sticky situation; hence, he took Harry’s word for it and admitted in front of Richie that he was the one who had killed Tommy. Amidst all this chaos, Maeve loudly...

Camille won’t be returning to Emily In Paris Season 5? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Big changes are on the horizon for Emily in Paris, and they start with a noticeable absence. One character, a familiar face since season one, won’t be making her stylish return.
Camille Razat, who played the artfully complex Camille, won’t be back for round five. Her exit marks a turning point, not just in the cast lineup, but in the emotional undercurrent of the show. Her absence will definitely leave a champagne-scented void despite her rocky relationship with Emily.

The fifth season of Emily in Pariswon't feature a character audiences have come to know and love since the beginning of the series. Camille (Camille Razat) hasn't always been a good friend to the protagonist of the story. However, regardless of what happened between the two young women, it has been confirmed that Camille Razat won't reprise her role in the next installment of the series. Most of the cast members who were present during the fourth season of Emily in Paris will be back for even more shocking plot twists in the city of love. Unfortunately, fans of Camille will have to say goodbye to their beloved champagne heiress.

It was a good night for the winner of Wheel of Fortune but not so much for host Ryan Seacrest. Right before the contestant won more than $120,000, Seacrest encountered a problem that he said had never happened to him before. Keith Upton, from San Diego, California, played against Clare Antoine, from Madison, Wisconsin, and Dhaina Grubb, from Grayson, Georgia, originally from Jamaica, on Thursday, March 27. During the introductions, Seacrest bonded with Upton over being a coffee lover and wearing similar clothing. He then said he liked Grubb better because she was from Georgia, which is also his home state. Upton gained a Wild Card from guessing the first puzzle of the game — “Blowing into a conch shell” — giving him $5,850. Antoine solved the next puzzle and almost solved the third, but she rode the express train and became Bankrupt when she guessed a “S” that wasn’t in the puzzle. Upton...

Netflix is hitting the ground running in 2025, especially for lovers of police dramas and crime thrillers. While watching shows and movies that are dubbed over or require closed captions can be a turn-off for some English-speaking viewers, Netflix has inspired more subtitle-friendly audiences thanks to its many great international series. The following examples are proof that anyone who is still avoiding subbed or dubbed shows might be missing out on some of the best stories of the year.
A nice change of pace from the typical American police procedural, The Åre Murders successfully tackles the Nordic noir genre; Public Disorder acts as a commentary on current sociopolitical tension in Italy; and the French film Squad 36 is a respectable addition to the cops-and-car-chases plots that audiences are oh-so fond of. All three of these projects bring something fresh to well-worn narratives.

Netflix’s Squad 36 is a French crime thriller that explores the dark underbelly of law enforcement and institutional corruption. Directed by [Director’s Name], the film follows the journey of Antoine, a seasoned cop struggling with personal demons, as he unravels a web of betrayal within his own squad. While the premise is promising, the film’s slow pacing, morally ambiguous characters, and lack of engaging action sequences make it a tedious watch.
Despite its flaws, Squad 36 raises significant issues, such as the mental health of law enforcement officers and the moral dilemmas they face. The film has received mixed reviews from audiences, with some praising its realism and others criticizing its sluggish execution. Let’s take a deeper dive into its plot and ending.

Director Olivier Marchal’s Squad 36 is a grounded, slow-paced thriller that meditates upon the very topical issue of police corruption. While the narrative focuses on the actions of individuals who abuse the powers they have been given to serve their own selfish means, the thematic significance of Squad 36 holds the rotting system and the seedy hierarchy of power accountable for creating an environment where such corruption festers. Characterization plays a key role in storylines such as this one, and it’s decent enough in the case of Squad 36. The issue is that the lead, whose Pov guides viewers through the narrative, is way less interesting than the characters who remain off-screen most of the time and yet affect the story the most. For a movie that is over two hours long, it is surprising the film doesn’t even have a fleshed-out roster of main characters—a...

Institutionalized authoritarian corruption is a universal crisis, and the people involved in the profession of upholding the law are as much of a victim of it as common people are. Netflix’s French thriller, Squad 36, ponders over this issue using a much-treaded narrative course. With a grounded yet extremely slow-paced story with a morally questionable lead and no likable characters involved, Squad 36’s tragic ending could have intrigued viewers better had the glaring problems been taken care of. Even significant issues raised by the movie, like the importance of the mental well-being of those serving law and order, are simply mentioned and not explored. Overall, this two-hour snoozefest of a crime caper neither possesses the cerebral nuance to hook in viewers nor has the reliance or strength in its action elements —creating an overall tedious experience as a result.

Squad 36, also titled Bastion 36, is a new French action thriller film streaming on Netflix that makes it a point to be ultra-realistic and grim at every juncture, although it ends up being quite a mediocre affair. The plot follows a police officer named Antoine Cerda, who grows perplexed at the fact that his old colleagues and squad mates are being killed off one after another, about six months after he is transferred to a different unit. While Squad 36 slightly stands out from most thoughtless action thrillers, it does not bring anything fresh or unique to the table and makes for an average watch.
Spoiler Alert
What is the Netflix film about?
Squad 36 begins in a busy part of Paris, where a man casually drinks a cup of coffee at a local café before stepping out and lighting a cigarette, taking a look around as if expecting to see someone.

Who doesn’t love a good movie about police corruption, right? Yes, the people in this particular profession are supposed to be the bastion of justice, the protector of the common folk, and an inspiration to all. And I am sure there are many officers, constables, and detectives who wear their uniforms, ignore their low pay and outdated weapons, and risk their lives every single day because they genuinely want to keep society from descending into utter chaos. But, with every passing year, it seems like the number of righteous cops is being overshadowed by the number of dishonest cops who want to take bribes, suck up to politicians, and side with the highest bidder instead of their fellow citizens. To make things worse, movies and even TV shows all over the globe are celebrating police brutality since it apparently “looks cool” on the big as well as the small screen.

Kaveh Daneshmand’s Endless Summer Syndrome presents a family drama set in the French countryside, creating an atmosphere that defies immediate comfort. Daneshmand’s initial film explores subtle tension and intimate moments, with each quiet scene suggesting deeper, more sinister undertones. The story goes beyond a typical family vacation, instead examining relationships, trust, and the hidden dynamics that can fracture an apparently perfect household.
The narrative blends family drama with psychological tension, focusing on Delphine (Sophie Colon), a mother who receives a disturbing phone call exposing a taboo secret about her husband, Antoine. This revelation triggers a sequence that dismantles the family’s seemingly seamless exterior.
The picturesque French landscape—with expansive gardens, a poolside area, and warm golden light—creates a stark contrast to the growing emotional strain. While the family’s affluence and beautiful setting initially suggest stability, the environment gradually becomes oppressive as Delphine’s increasing anxiety permeates previously secure spaces.

The creative team behind Emily in Paris is hard at work on the show’s upcoming fifth season, and it seems they have some exciting plans in place for one beloved member of the cast who was criminally underutilized in the show’s fourth season!
Deadline has reported Lucien Laviscount will be returning for Emily in Paris season 5 and not just in a guest role. Per the report, Laviscount is returning as a series regular which seems to hint we hopefully will be seeing more of British transplant Alfie in the next season.
While Alfie was a part of season 4, Lasiscount’s role in the show’s more recent season was seriously reduced which was due in part to his status shifting to recurring for season 4. The fourth season of Emily in Paris saw Emily and Alfie officially calling it quits after the fallout of the season 3 finale.

Netflix is working on the upcoming fifth season of Emily in Paris and it has been confirmed that Lucien Laviscount will be back as a series regular, though Lucas Bravo‘s status is still unknown.
Lucien joined the show in season two as Alfie, a new British love interest for Emily. While he was upped to series regular in season three, he bumped down to a recurring status in season four because of scheduling issues.
Deadline reports that he will be back as a series regular for the fifth season, though it’s not yet clear if he’ll still be a love interest for Emily or if he’s mainly there as Antoine’s business associate.
So, what about Lucas as Gabriel?

Exclusive: That looming new love triangle for Emily may become a rectangle. Fan favorite Alfie will have a larger presence in the upcoming fifth season as the actor who portrays him, Lucien Laviscount, has made a deal to rejoin the cast as a series regular, Deadline has learned.
Alfie, a sarcastic and charmingly cynical British transplant to Paris, was introduced in Season 2 of the hit Netflix romantic comedy series as a recurring character. Brit Laviscount was upped to a series regular in Season 3 as Emily (Lily Collins) found herself torn between him and her longtime crush, Gabriel (Lucas Bravo). Largely for scheduling reasons, Laviscount again became recurring in Season 4, appearing in four episodes, including the season premiere and finale.
Season 4 kicked off with Emily trying to make amends with Alfie after the bombshell at Camille and Gabriel’s ill-fated wedding. He was finally ready to forgive Emily and take her back at the masquerade ball,...

While classic Western movies may no longer be as popular as they were during their peak throughout the 1940s to the 1960s, it's incredible how the genre's style has been infused into countless non-Western movies. As classic tales of heroes and outlaws pervade cinema, it’s fascinating to note just how many things would not exist without the influence of classic Westerns. While some movies wear this influence on their sleeves, it’s a much more subtle comparison in other films.
It’s no surprise that Westerns have had a major impact on other genres, as some of the best filmmakers of all time grew up watching cowboys and bandits and have taken those tropes and cliches into their own work. From cult classics that cannot fit into any one genre to major franchises that echo the aesthetics of Westerns, the desert landscape of the Wild West and the individualistic...

Season 7 brings another pair of two-part mysteries for our “Odd Couple” to solve. At the end of Season 6, it appeared that the will-they-won’t they finally landed in the boink column. But this round opens with Antoine and Florence awkwardly backpedaling from the idea of the horizontal mambo realm. The first murder takes them to Versailles where the stiff du jour was seeking a treasure allegedly hidden in Marie Antoinette’s elegantly-crafted wardrobe. The little coterie from the séance he performed that led him there provides a nice suspect pool.

Dragon Age has always been famous for its variety of companions and Dragon Age: The Veilguard is no exception, with seven characters joining Rook on their quest to save Thedas. However, there were some familiar faces from previous titles that people understandably expected to see, either as companions or as cameos. With the impending release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, audiences are once again looking forward to another colorful tale about one of the most celebrated video game characters in history. It's almost hard to believe that Sonic, who was first introduced by way of a video game all the way in 1991, is still captivating interest among multiple generations. In a much-clipped moment from his Criterion Closet video, philosopher and cultural theorist Slavoj Žižek pulls a DVD copy of Louis Malle’s Murmur of the Heart from the shelf and remarks upon it warmly as “one of those nice gentle French movies where you have incest.” Žižek’s enigmatic comment springs to mind watching Endless Summer Syndrome, the feature-directing debut of Iranian director Kaveh Daneshmand––primarily because the film delights in upending every other word in that iconic sentence.

Kaveh Daneshmand’s “Endless Summer Syndrome” unfolds like a Chekhov drama. Set in an idyllic country house where a family of four is enjoying the final lazy days of summer, the French film is jolted into focus with a whispered allegation that risks upending a mother’s picture-perfect image of those she loves. Awash in bright sunny images and careening toward a dark, knotted ending, Daneshmand’s family drama makes for an increasingly disquieting watch, the unseemly secret at its center as poisonous as the pet snail which serves as a waiting Chekhov’s gun.
Delphine (Sophie Colon) has what looks like a perfect family. The human rights activist, who finds time during her summer holiday to take part in important Zoom town halls on the primacy of family values, has been happily married for decades to Antoine (Mathéo Capelli), a successful novelist.
