How Star Trek Explored Prejudice Without Breaking Gene Roddenberry's Biggest Rule
Image
On "Star Trek," the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise is, by design, racially and ethnically diverse. Show creator Gene Roddenberry invented "Star Trek" partly as a reaction to the turbulent world of the mid-1960s, hoping to create a utopian counterpoint to the horrors of war he witnessed on the news every day. By Roddenberry's reasoning, the future would be better than the present, as war would be brought to an end thanks to a concerted effort on humanity's part to unite. There are no national or racial divisions in Roddenberry's future, just a multicultural crew working together in harmony. Roddenberry essentially listened to John Lennon's "Imagine" and imagined it.

"Star Trek" was infamously taken off the air in 1969 but became a hit in reruns, becoming a cult phenomenon in the early '70s. "Star Trek" conventions began to pop up in big cities, and Roddenberry would...

2 Years Before Easy Rider, Dennis Hopper Starred in This Classic Paul Newman Drama With 100% on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
One of the coolest, charming and charismatic movie stars around in the '50s and '60s was definitely Paul Newman. The definition of a movie star, Newman could have had any role he wanted back then. An actor known for his versatility, who could be dramatic, hysterical, funny and serious, Newman had it all. He has an impressive run of films in the '60s but probably none more iconic than Cool Hand Luke. The Stuart Rosenberg classic based on the book of the same name is one of those undeniable masterpieces that holds up to this day. Newman leads the way in this equally emotional and humorous tale of a man recently incarcerated after drunkenly vandalizing public property.

Of course, it's not only Newman that allows this film to blossom into the resonant journey that it is. The supporting cast, which includes George Kennedy, J.D. Cannon and Jo Van Fleet...

Star Trek: Section 31 Subtly Redeems A Polarizing Original Series Species
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

This post contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Section 31."

There's a tendency among TV and film fans -- or consumers of any type of pop culture, really -- to let past portrayals off the hook by defining them as "of their time" or as something that "couldn't be made today." It's one of the most insidious habits we have as viewers, and it's usually flat-out wrong. Marginalized people have been fighting to be represented accurately on screen for as long as visual media has existed. Bigot-led '70s sitcom "All in the Family" was considered network poison before it became a hit, lesbian readers were already sick of sad gay love stories by the '50s, and Disney's famously racist film "Song of the South" was controversial even before its 1946 release.

It's easy to fall into the trap of assuming...

Star Trek: Section 31 needlessly retcons iconic Star Trek: The Original Series episode
Image
Star Trek: The Original Series remains one of the most iconic pieces of science fiction to ever be produced. Sure, the sets are dated and some of the ideas aren't the best. It's a show of it's time for about 60% of the episodes. Yet, those remaining episodes, roughly 40% of episodes are sacred viewing. Few of which are in held as high esteem as "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield".

In the episode, the Enterprise stumbles upon two sides of a war. A man with a black and white face, and his enemy, a man with a white and black face. Nearly identical in every way but the colors of their face are swapped. Due to this, a war breaks out. With neither side wanting the "other" to be the dominant side.

It leads the two aliens of the episode, Bele and Lokai to come into contact with James Kirk and his crew.

Star Trek's New Movie Reveals A Controversial Original Series Alien Is Still Alive
Image
These controversial aliens from one of Star Trek: The Original Series' most recognizable episodes are still alive in Star Trek: Section 31. Directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi and written by Craig Sweeny, Section 31 is shaping up to be different from any other Star Trek project that has come before it. With a cast led by Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh, the main storyline of Section 31 follows Emperor Philippa Georgiou and a team of black ops Section 31 agents as they embark on a covert mission to protect the United Federation of Planets.

Premiering on Friday, January 24, on Paramount+, Star Trek: Section 31 takes place during Star Trek's "lost era" of the early 24th century before the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Despite being set many years after Star Trek: The Original Series, Section 31 appears to have some connections to the adventures of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner). An...

Riddle Me This: Who Did Frank Gorshin Play In Star Trek: Tos?
Image
Batman and Star Trek shared many actors, showcasing the crossover appeal of 1960s television. Frank Gorshin's performance as Bele in a Star Trek episode brought depth to the social commentary. Gorshin's versatile acting career spanned various iconic TV shows and films of the era.

Actor and comedian Frank Gorshin may be most recognizable for playing the Riddler in the 1960s Batman series, but he also guest starred in an iconic episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. Batman and Star Trek: The Original Series both began in 1966 and likely appealed to many of the same fans. With its campy and comedic tone, the Batman series of the 1960s depicted a very different version of the character than most modern adaptations of his stories. Nevertheless, Adam West's version of Batman became iconic in his own right, as he fought crime alongside his trusty sidekick Robin (Burt Ward).

2 Star Trek Tos & Tng Episodes Really Hit You Over The Head
Image
Star Trek episodes often tackle relevant social and political issues with a heavy-handed moral message. "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" and "Symbiosis" both deliver their moral messages in a less subtle manner. Despite some episodes being too heavy-handed, Star Trek celebrates diversity and acceptance in its messages.

The Star Trek franchise is no stranger to a strong moral message, but these episodes from Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation are particularly heavy-handed. Since its inception in 1966, Star Trek has woven social commentary into its outer space adventures. Not only was the cast of Tos diverse for the time, but Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the crew of the USS Enterprise often encountered alien civilizations that mirrored elements of Earth cultures. This allowed Star Trek to tackle relevant issues within a clever science-fiction framework.

In Star Trek: The Original Series season 3, episode 15, "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield,...

Cool Hand Luke: The True Story Behind the Prison Escape Film
Image
The year is 1967. The crisp November air is intensified when a prison escape film starring Paul Newman drops into theaters, and Newman's career went from great to legendary. Directed by Stuart Rosenberg, Cool Hand Luke is a film that revolves around Lucas "Luke" Jackson, a man sent to a Southern prison camp for a minor crime — and leaves the audience stunned by its outstanding rendition of a tale that is inspired by a shocking true story. The film captures thrilling emotions and is an overall masterpiece with its excellent writing and performances.

Luke Jackson’s story is one of fighting inequality and brutality in prison, earning his fellow prisoners’ admiration for his determination and persistence. It surrounds his struggle beneath the deeply corrupt authoritarian prison and how standing up for himself changes everything in his life. Luke is as raw and true, and as cool, as one gets. Newman's...

It Took Months Of Research For Star Trek: Discovery To Get The 10-c Right
Image
In the fourth season of "Star Trek: Discovery," random planets and moons are being rent asunder by a free-floating Dark Matter Anomaly that has recently appeared in the galaxy. The U.S.S. Discovery investigates the Anomaly and finds that it is not a natural phenomenon. The Dark Matter Anomaly is, in fact, an energy field created by a mysterious, undiscovered species that is eventually designated Species 10-c.

In the final episodes of season four, audiences learn an awful lot about Species 10-c. They are non-humanoid, and communicate through nonverbal means. Their language is a combination of vague, emotional psychic waves, and a series of blinking lights on their own bodies. The final few episodes of season 4 are devoted to learning 10-c's language. Additionally, we learn that the 10-c once lived on elaborately constructed rings that surrounded their home sun, but the species suffered a planetwide, meteor-related cataclysm, and constructed...

DVD Review: "The Girl In The Empty Grave" (1977) Starring Andy Griffith; Warner Archive DVD
Image
By Lee Pfeiffer

The Warner Archive is mining its cache of old TV movies to release as burn-to-order DVDs. In general, this is a welcome development as it gives new life to sometimes worthy productions that have been virtually unseen for many years. Some of the fare is rather tepid, however, as evidenced by the release of The Girl in the Empty Grave, a 1977 mystery starring Andy Griffith. I'm second to none in my admiration for Griffith's talents as both a comedic and dramatic actor, but here he seems to be slumming and capitalizing too obviously on his Mayberry sheriff image. He plays another small town lawman, Abel Marsh (Griffith had introduced the character in a previous TV movie), who presides over a sleepy, picturesque mountain hamlet in the California high country. (The film was shot near Big Bear Lake at the San Bernadino National Forest). He's surrounded by a...

Naomi Watts Admits Her 8-Year-Old Son Is 'Dying' to See The Ring: 'I Think It's Too Scary'
Naomi Watts
Naomi Watts would prefer her children just forget their mom’s a movie star.

The 48-year-old actress makes a leap to television with her new Netflix series Gypsy, in which she plays a therapist who gets fluid with her sexuality, addicted to meddling in her patients’ lives.

However, it’s a role she’d rather her sons — Samuel Kai, 8½, and Alexander “Sasha” Pete, 10 this month, whom she co-parents amicably with ex-partner Liev Schreiber — never streamed.

But Gypsy isn’t the exception. The roles Watts, who has previously portrayed a pregnant stripper and a torture victim, doesn’t want them to see are “most of them,...

Jamie Dornan Will Lead Fifty Shades Of Grey
After a long, hard search, (ok, maybe it wasn’t that long, or that hard), the studio has finally found a replacement for Charlie Hunnam in Fifty Shades of Grey. The Sons of Anarchy star was set to play Christian Grey but dropped out a few weeks ago.

Since then, a whole host of names have popped up in relation to who would replace him in the film. Scott Eastwood, Theo James, Christian Cooke and more were all rumored for the part but it looks like the studio has made up their mind today.

Variety is reporting that Jamie Dornan, who had been mentioned with the names above, has been selected to take the lead in Universal’s film. Perhaps best known for his role on ABC’s Once Upon A Time or BBC’s The Fall, the 31-year-old actor will join Dakota Johnson in the Sam Taylor-Johnson directed movie,...

Billy Magnussen And More Added To Contenders List For 'Fifty Shades Of Grey'
Another day, a few more names being tossed onto the list for "Fifty Shades of Grey," as Universal tries to figure out which young hunk is going to look best with their shirt off beside Dakota Johnson. We suppose acting ability could be important too, so who else is in the ever-growing mix? Well, the Tony-nominated Billy Magnussen is testing for Christian Grey (along with Jamie Dornan), and while he's known to a certain audience for playing Casey Hughes on "As The World Turns," his big-screen efforts have been scattered. But with a role in Disney's upcoming "Into the Woods," he poised to break out. Meanwhile, Luke Bracey, longtime Aussie TV actor and rising Hollywood kid who played Cobra Commander in "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," is apparently also the mix. Anyway, these guys join Alexander Skarsgård, Theo James, Christian Cooke, Francois Arnaud and Scott Eastwood in the expanding list of possible leads.

Clint Eastwood’s Son May Star In Fifty Shades Of Grey
Hoping to make his father proud, Clint Eastwood’s son, Scott, may replace Charlie Hunnam in Fifty Shades of Grey. According to Just Jared, the rising actor, who has a role alongside Brad Pitt in the upcoming WWII flick Fury, is testing for the part of Christian Grey in Universal’s adaptation.

Said to have a final decision for us in a few weeks, the studio has narrowed its search down to five, say sources close to the project. Aside from Eastwood, Alexander Skarsgard, Theo James, Francois Arnaud, Jamie Dornen and Christian Cooke are all in the running. But wait, that’s not five, that’s six. Perhaps someone has dropped out?

To be honest, I’m not at all familiar with Mr. Eastwood (Scott, that is). Often credited as Scott Reeves, he’s appeared in films like Invictus, Gran Torino, Trouble With the Curve and Flags of our Fathers (starting to see a pattern?...

Francois Arnaud May Lead Fifty Shades Of Grey, Charlie Hunnam Only Offered $125,000
With Charlie Hunnam having dropped out of Fifty Shades of Grey, the race is now on to find a new leading man. With names like Theo James, Alexander Skarsgard and Jamie Dornen in the mix, it looks like the studio is wasting no time in finding a replacement. Now, we’re hearing that one more actor is being eyed: Francois Arnaud.

Perhaps best known for his role on The Borgias as Ceasre Borgia, Arnaud is being looked at for the role of Christian Grey, but no formal offer has been made just yet. He has been approached though, so that’s something.

In other Fifty Shades of Grey news, we’re hearing that Hunnam was only being offered $125,000 to do the film. To start off with, the actor was never fully on board with the role, he was always “uneasy” about taking it on. When he read the script, he...

Charlie Hunnam at an event for Sons of Anarchy (2008)
True Blood's Alexander Skarsgard and The Fall's Jamie Dornan are reportedly on a list of possible replacements for Charlie Hunnam, who exited the Fifty Shades of Grey movie at the weekend.

Theo James and Christian Cooke are also being considered, The Hollywood Reporter says, while the film has announced that writer Patrick Marber has been hired to refine the script.

Oscar-nominated Marber previously worked on Closer and Notes on a Scandal. He also wrote a short film, Love You More, which was directed by Fifty Shades' Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Marcus and John have a history as the former convinced the latter to leave the assassin life after a tragic event. London Fields film shoot gets under way
Long gestating Martin Amis adaptation starts shooting, with Katy Perry promo director Matthew Cullen on board

• Read our 2001 interview with Martin Amis

It has languished in Hollywood purgatory for well over a decade while directors of the calibre of David Cronenberg, Michael Winterbottom and Shekhar Kapur have come and gone. But Martin Amis's most celebrated novel, London Fields, is finally due to begin shooting today in the British capital with a high-profile cast that includes Amber Heard, Billy Bob Thornton and Jim Sturgess.

Guillermo del Toro protege Mathew Cullen will make his feature film debut on the project after cutting his teeth on commercials and music videos, as well as overseeing the prologue for the Mexican film-maker's current blockbuster Pacific Rim. The big screen version, the screenplay for which Amis has written himself with Roberta Hanley, does not look to have diverted too far from the 1989 novel. It centres...

The Prince (2015)
• With a title like The Prince, die-hard Bruce Willis fans might worry that he’s decided to go from blue collar to blue blood. Thankfully, it’s a little misleading. Armenian director Sarik Andreasyan (American Heist) will tell the story of a retired Las Vegas mobster who must return to the city when he discovers that his teenage daughter is missing. Willis will play the man who has been cautiously awaiting the return of the mob enforcer. Filming will begin in New Orleans in October. Willis’s next scheduled release is Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which hits theaters Aug.

Martin Amis
Martin Amis’ novel London Fields has, like so much of his work, proved a real challenge to get on the screen. Fields has been in the works since at least the year 2000, when the rights were first purchased. Now in a surprise twist, it’s being shot with Billy Bob Thornton, Amber Heard, Jim Sturgess and Theo James in the lead roles.Ads man Matthew Cullen is the director who has finally wrangled it into production, working from an adaptation by Amis himself and Roberta Hanley. Heard plays femme fatale Nicola, possessed of unusual beauty and hypnotic magnetism. Mysterious and clairvoyant, she sets a plan in motion to fulfil the prophecy of her own murder.Caught up in Nicola’s plan are a terminally ill writer (Thornton), a lowly street hustler (Sturgess) and an unhappily married banker (James), who become intertwined in a love triangle that unfolds in the grimy...

MTV Vma Red Carpet Roundup: They Said What?
Shailene Woodley in To Catch a Killer (2023)
Sunday night, HuffPost Celebrity was on hand at the MTV Vma red carpet to chat with the litany of stars flooding into an amped-up Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Below, we asked Shailene Woodley, Sarah Hyland, Iggy Azalea and more how they get lucky and which band they'd like to see reunite, 'N Sync-style.

Who: Theo James and Shailene Woodley

You play the perfect teenager in "Spectacular Now" and "The Descendants." What is about you that makes people relate?

Theo: That's a good question.

Shailene: As my characters, I feel like I’ve played very broken characters that are very different. Maybe growing up with two psychologist parents allowed me to tap into some of those hidden feelings.

How's the haircut going?

Shailene: I cut it for a film, but started a campaign to get other people to do it. My mom cut her hair too.

'N Sync is performing tonight.

Shailene Woodley and Theo James in Divergent (2014)

Which means action aplenty, a kick-ass heroine in the form of Shailene Woodley, and the barest hint of romance between Woodley and Theo James. Check out the trailer below… Divergent is set in a future world that’s divided...
