Television can be a very fickle mistress. Just when you're getting into a show, the powers that be come out of nowhere and cancel it -- it happens all the time. But while there are plenty of shows that were stricken from the air far too early (check out the most controversial TV show cancellations ever), others have gotten an unexpected reprieve. Because you see, these days a show can't really be considered beyond salvation until all of its actors are dead. Whether they're saved by a rival network, resurrected years later due to fan outcry, or a cancellation order was reversed simply because network execs took the time to reconsider, more shows than you realize have been brought back from the brink of annihilation.

Sure, sometimes these renewals were a mere stay of execution, squeezing out one more season before the show was cancelled again, this time for good.

We have wanted to collectively throw our TVs and laptops into the ocean in protest. I'm glad I live in the desert because it would have gotten expensive this season of Love is Blind, especially.

How-ev-er...it's too much. I love to talk trash about the cast with the best of them. I even made it my job. Everything I say about the cast, however, I would absolutely say to their face. Atx TV Festival has announced the first round of events for the 2025 event, set to take place in Austin from May 29-June 1, including reunions of “The Leftovers” and “UnREAL” and a peek inside the world of Bill Lawrence.

On Monday, the festival announced “The Leftovers” will reunite during Season 14 with co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, director and executive producer Mimi Leder, and cast members Justin Theroux, Carrie Coon, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Ann Dowd and Kevin Carroll. Head of Max Original Programming Sarah Aubrey will moderate.

A+E Studios will present a retrospective for Lifetime hit “UnREAL,” featuring co-creator Sarah Gertrude Shapiro and cast members Shiri Appleby, Constance Zimmer, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman and Craig Bierko.

This year’s festival will also include Bill Lawrence returning for “Bill Lawrence & Friends,” a panel with collaborators from some of his current and past projects such as “Bad Monkey,” “Shrinking,” “Ted Lasso,” “Scrubs,” “Cougar Town” and more.

TV’s production cycle just ain’t what it used to be, and creator Jason Katims is feeling nostalgic.

You can’t blame him: When Katims spoke with Variety recently, the topic was the 25th anniversary of his teen drama “Roswell,” which had been intended for Fox but ended up on The CW predecessor The WB.

Katims waxed poetic about the days when May’s TV upfronts actually mattered.

“Back in those days, it was this mad scramble where things could change drastically in a matter of hours,” Katims said. “At the time, I thought this was such an absurd system. Because the stories that we tell ourselves are very limiting.” Rom-coms contain all manner of characters stuck in narratives of their own making: A man who can’t be friends with women (When Harry Met Sally), “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” (27 Dresses), and so forth. Ashton Kutcher is returning to romantic comedies.

The actor hadn’t been in a rom-com since 2011 when he appeared in “New Year’s Eve” and starred opposite Natalie Portman in “No Strings Attached.” But 12 years later, Kutcher toplines the new Netflix smoocher “Your Place or Mine” with Reese Witherspoon.

“Honestly, I think I had more fun shooting this movie than I ever had,” Kutcher told me Thursday night at film’s premiere in Los Angeles. “It was genuinely a choice. I didn’t need to do it. I didn’t have to do it. It wasn’t like a career-building block. It was like, ‘I want to do this.’”

He gushed over working with Witherspoon. “I got to be in scenes across from a genuine movie star,” Kutcher said. “She’s such a movie star. It was so wonderful and fun and funny and light. There was never a dark day.

Debbie craves routine with her son in Los Angeles, while Peter thrives on change in New York City. When they swap houses and lives for a week, the duo discovers what they think they want might not be what they really need, per an official synopsis.

Debbie (Witherspoon) and Peter (Ashton Kutcher) have been best friends for 20 years since that fateful night they met — and slept together. The pair are total opposites. Debbie lives a steady, predictable life in Los Angeles with her son Jack (Wesley Kimmel), and Peter lives a fast-paced, pivoting one in New York.

In “The Holiday” style, Peter suggests they swap houses for a week because as he puts it, Debbie needs a break. Comedian and actress Tig Notaro sends Debbie off with hope that she’ll embark on a new love story. Enter Jesse Williams who bravely asks for Debbie’s number one night, and suddenly the stakes go up as Peter realizes how much Debbie really means to him.

Netflix has just released the first official images for their upcoming romantic comedy Your Place or Mine. The film stars Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon as two best friends who decide to trade houses and lives for one week. The film serves as the directorial debut of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend showrunner Aline Brosh McKenna, who also penned the film's script. Jesse Williams, Zoë Chao, Wesley Kimmel, Griffin Matthews, Rachel Bloom, Shiri Appleby, Vella Lovell, Tig Notaro, and Steve Zahn round out the rest of the film's cast.

Romantic comedy veterans Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher team up for Your Place or Mine, written and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna. Netflix just released the first photos from the rom-com which finds longtime friends swapping homes for a week.

“I think of it as a body-swapping movie, but without the body-swapping,” explained Brosh McKenna in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “They each get to walk a mile in each other’s shoes. And by doing that, they learn things about each other they never would’ve found out otherwise.”

Netflix has set a February 10, 2023 premiere date for the comedy and Brosh McKenna believes it’s perfect Valentine’s Day viewing.

When most people think of foster care, they usually think about what they've seen on TV, which isn't a lot.

It's just one of those things writers don't tend to dig deep into, except for a few choice storylines that usually end up on the cutting floor.

While both shows showed you a side of the system not typically shown on broadcast, another, just three years before, was also doing that.

The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico season four episode 13 serves as both the season and series finale. Picking up seconds after the end of episode 12, “How It’s Going to Be“ begins with Clyde easily stopping Isobel and Max’s attack. Rosa (Amber Midthunder) concentrates on tuning in on Clyde’s frequency and manages to free herself from his restraint.

Rosa surprises Clyde by smashing him over the head with a board, which gives Max (Nathan Dean) time to prepare to use the blue flame. Unfortunately, Clyde also uses the flame and knocks everyone over before kidnapping Rosa and escaping in a car.

In the latest TV show ratings, The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico drew 514,000 total viewers — up 29 percent to mark a (final-)season high — while steady in the demo with a 0.1 rating.

Lead-out In the Dark similarly hit a (final-)season high in audience (up 5 percent to 335,000 viewers) while also ticking up in the demo week-to-week to a rrrrrobust 0.1 rating.
