Before Dandadan, Science Saru Made the Big Leagues With a Hit Anime, And Its Creator Wants a Season 2 Asap
Image
Science Saru made a big splash with Dandadan, one of 2024's top anime—but long before that, they had another major hit, and its creator is hungry for more. In 2020, Science Saru released an adaptation of Eizouken ni wa Te o Dasu na!, better known as Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! in the West. Centered on three friends who combine their unique talents and proclivities to pursue a shared dream of creating anime, Sumito Owara's Eizouken can be considered a love letter to anime as an art form.

Fittingly, Science Saru's anime adaptation answered the call with an expertly crafted adaptation of the work. The anime did spectacularly well, and Eizouken now sits comfortably with an 8.14 on MyAnimeList as of the time of writing. Praised on every front from its art direction to its soundtrack, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! was Science Saru's definitive mission statement as a studio.

‘Saccharine’ – New Supernatural Body Horror Movie from ‘Relic’ Director
Emily Mortimer, Robyn Nevin, and Bella Heathcote in Relic (2020)
After breaking out in 2020 with Relic and helming this year’s Rosemary’s Baby prequel Apartment 7A, filmmaker Natalie Erika James is now filming supernatural body horror movie Saccharine, per Deadline.

Midori Francis will play the lead.

Opposite Francis are Danielle Macdonald (Patti Cake$) playing Josie, Hana’s best friend, and Madeleine Madden (The Wheel of Time) as Alanya, a personal trainer and fitness influencer.

“There is so much toxic messaging around weight and appearance that permeates every corner of our culture. Saccharine is an intimate look into one woman’s struggle with body image, self-worth, and shame-driven compulsion, told through a supernatural body-horror with a queer lens and an edge of the absurd,” Natalie Erika James said of the project.

Review: Suzuki Seijun’s Yakuza Action Movie ‘Tattooed Life’ on Radiance Films Blu-ray
Image
Made in the midst of his run of feverish, postmodern genre films at Nikkatsu, Suzuki Seijun’s Tattooed Life is something of a snapshot of the more patient, probing works that the filmmaker made in the 1980s and beyond. It starts, though, at a frenzy, with yakuza hood Tetsu (Takahashi Hideki) set up from the jump by his bosses to carry out a hit on a rival that’s also meant to sacrifice him as a patsy. His brother, the sensitive and soft-spoken artist Kenji (Hananomoto Kotobuki), ends up killing the other yakuza to save Tetsu, forcing both to flee from both rival gangs and their own superiors, who are seeking to tie up loose ends. Further double-crosses follow as the brothers are conned by gangsters and everyday charlatans making false promises of safe passage to Japan’s Manchuria colony.

The brothers do eventually make it to Manchuria, where they...

Flim Analysis: Disciples of Hippocrates (1980) by Kazuki Omori
Winner for Best Actor (Masato Furuoya), Best Supporting Actress and Best Film from the 2nd Yokohama Film Festival, Kazuki Omori‘s third film has an unusual theme, as it focuses on the lives of medical students during their tenure in a hospital dealing, though, with the details of the profession at least as much as on the characters themselves. That Omori was a medical student himself, definitely helps in that regard.

Where to watch

The story takes place during the 70s, and revolves around Ogino, a tall, timid guy, who tries to balance his rather complicated life, not sure about his overall path. He and a group of other medical students, Kawamoto, who entered medical school due to family expectations; Oshima, a passionate student with a strong interest in medicine; Kato, an older student with a family; Wang, a former baseball player; and the only female, the excellent student Midori,...

These Unfaithful Anime Characters Completely Wrecked Their Relationships
Image
Anime is known for many wonderful aspects, like imaginative stories, incredibly developed characters, wondrous worlds, and so much more. But it's also known for exploring many topics that are controversial or deemed inappropriate for audiences outside of Japan. Thus, the subbed version of an anime is often altered to suit this new audience.

One theme that appears to be quite common in anime is partners cheating either one or both of them. In some cases, and depending on the genres and tropes of an anime, this is okay. However, in many slice-of-life romance anime, infidelity is a horrible betrayal, and yet many characters cheat and ruin their relationships altogether.

Updated on July 24, 2024, by Antonio Samson: There are plenty of anime that have romance front and center. However, there are plenty of characters that aren't faithful in their relationships. This article was updated to include more characters and to meet...

Short Film Review: Blue and White (2022) by Hiroyuki Nishiyama
Image
Hiroyuki Nishiyama offers his second narrative short film, “Blue and White,” capturing themes close to the concerns of his first film “20 db” (2021) but focusing on the effects of loss and what comes after it. Its brief runtime is a delight to see, from the intimacy of its design to the intricacy of the performances.

Blue and White is screening at Short Shorts Film Festival and Asia

The film opens with Ryusuke (Jun Kunimura) starting his day gathering firewood, then cuts to his workshop where he steams seawater to harvest salt. His granddaughter, Midori (Momoko Fukuchi) eventually enters the frame, mumbling to herself why her grandfather is working that morning of her grandmother's funeral. An attendee of the funeral (Toshio Kakei) asks Midori the same question she was mumbling earlier, hinting that it is disrespectful to the dead for her grandfather to not show his face in the funeral.

There's One Obvious Choice For The Next Zelda Game Based On Recent Leaks
Image
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time would be a smart remake move for Switch 2. The game's recent anniversary, mixed with continued fan love, make it the perfect title to remake. HD graphics, quality-of-life additions, and more would make an even better version than the N64 and 3Ds titles.

There have been many rumors about The Legend of Zelda recently, especially regarding the Switch 2, Nintendo's next console. Zelda Leaks Hint At Another Remake Coming To Switch 2
Image
A leaked project codenamed Edward is linked to a Legend of Zelda title, possibly for Switch 2. It could be a remaster or remake of a previous Zelda entry, not unlike the Switch version of Link's Awakening. Possibilities include remakes/remasters of Twilight Princess, The Minish Cap, or Ocarina of Time.

A prominent leaker has revealed another codename for a project that Nintendo may be creating for the Switch 2 console; this time, The Legend of Zelda is getting attached to the codename. While having The Legend of Zelda franchise on Nintendos next platform is obvious, the signs for this codename point to a remaster or remake of a previous entry.

The reveal comes from leaker Midori on X (formerly Twitter), who states that Nintendo is working on a game thats codenamed Edward. They then tie it into the rumors that they've heard about there being a new The Legend of Zelda...

Nintendo Direct June 2024 Predictions: Which Games Are Most Likely
Image
The June 2024 Nintendo Direct won't discuss the Nintendo Switch successor, likely focusing on remasters and remakes like Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D. Metroid Prime games could get some time at the Direct, while other possibilities include a new Donkey Kong and game updates. Managing expectations is key, as the Direct should be exciting but isn't likely to contain constant surprises.

Nintendo Directs can be some of the most exciting events in gaming, but they can be equally hard to predict. Nintendo isn't exactly known for sharing information ahead of time, and major game releases are often only announced a few months before they launch. Even the Directs themselves can come as something of a surprise, but one is known to be landing in June 2024, a stream to be excited for among the bustle of game news, announcements, and releases that surround the Summer Game Fest event.

Aside from the June window,...

According to a highly reliable leaker on X/Twitter, a Final Fantasy remake is currently in the works. While it’s unfortunately not the one that many were hoping to see, it’s still a great entry in the franchise.

Reputed Industry Leaker Confirms One Big Square Enix Project

Kingdom Hearts May Be the Next to Join Fortnite as the Franchise’s Revival Continues!
Image
According to industry insider and leaker Midori, also known as MbKKssTBhz5, a Kingdom Hearts and Fortnite collaboration is in the works. While no official date has been set, the news is definitely exciting for fans of both franchises.

The buzz regarding the beloved gaming franchise joining Fortnite’s ever-expanding universe suggests that the series is continuing its recent revival and expansion, and given Disney’s connection to the developers of the two projects, Square Enix and Epic Games, it’s easy to believe this pretty convincing leak.

The Series Joining Fortnite Makes a Lot of Sense

Disney invested $1.5 billion in Fortnite to create an expansive universe.

Firstly, the Disney connection is very relevant. Both of these franchises have strong ties to Disney, making this collaboration a natural fit. This partnership would also be mutually beneficial, as Kingdom Hearts would gain exposure to Fortnite’s vast and younger audience, introducing it to the series.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Losing Second Regular Cast Member
Image
Grey’s Anatomy is no stranger to losing major cast members. In recent years, it even lost the character the show is named after, although Meredith Grey at least returns occasionally for guest appearances. However, the end of the current season will see two characters leaving the show.

Here is a look at the news on the latest Grey’s Anatomy character exit.

Persona 6 Details Leaked Ahead of Official Announcement
Image
Persona 6 has started to feel like a myth, as Atlus does not seem to be getting over the success of the fifth mainline game in the series. Originally released in 2016, Persona 5 has had multiple variations through the years, such as a dancing rhythm title and even a tactical RPG launched just last year. The publisher is obsessed with Persona 3 and 5 to take part in any discussion regarding a sixth proper game in the franchise.

However, although there still has not been an announcement from Atlus, the latest leak is in regards to the potential setting of Persona 6, and it really shouldn’t be that surprising for fans of the series.

Crunchyroll’s First New Isekai of 2024 Is Ridiculous But Promising
Image
Fluffy Paradise focuses on the unique power of its protagonist, Neema, who has unlimited access to adoring animals for her to cuddle. The series appeals to viewers who enjoy cute and adorable characters, with Neema's cuteness providing a ridiculous appeal to the overall story. The cliffhanger in the debut episode hints at a potentially ingenious twist to the common isekai trope, where Neema's seemingly humble power might hold more significance and gain her immense status in the new world.

Warning: Spoilers for Fluffy Paradise episode 1!!!

Fluffy Paradise is an adaptation of the light novel series I'll Try My Best So I Can Pet and Pat in Another World by Himawari.

Crunchyroll definitely chose an interesting series in Fluffy Paradise to lead its litany of isekai titles into the new year. But rather than rely on past successes by licensing series where protagonists get reborn as absurd animals or objects like vending machines and pigs,...

When does Fluffy Paradise come out?
Image
Fluffy Paradise breaks the mold of the typical action-oriented isekai fantasy anime, offering a laidback and cute aesthetic. The series challenges the recent trend of female-oriented isekai anime by focusing on a young girl's adventures with animals, rather than princess or villainess stories. Fluffy Paradise explores deeper themes such as animal rights, offering a variation on world-building that prevents it from becoming a rote power fantasy.

Isekai is easily the most prominent genre in anime and manga. It takes on numerous forms in order to stand out, with some of these anime being downright ridiculous. That's amid several other well-worn tropes that have made some rather tired of isekai as a whole. Nevertheless, one upcoming anime adaptation is set to add some peaceful new life to the genre.

Fluffy Paradise is a series that's now set to be turned into an anime series, and it's far from the norm for the genre.

Best Manga That Need Anime Adaptations
Image
Anime adaptations often serve to boost a series' overall popularity while drawing in new viewers who may not have heard of it before, with some becoming even more popular than their source material. Despite there being countless anime adaptations available and more being made all the time, many brilliant stories told through manga still have yet to receive an adaptation, but are more than deserving.

Biggest Manga Controversies, Ranked

Some manga haven't received proper anime adaptations at the request of their creators, who personally believe their stories were written specifically for the manga format and wouldn't translate well to anime. Others deal with dark or heavy subject matter that isn't commonly explored in either anime or manga, making an adaptation highly desired but unlikely.

Film Review: Typhoon Club (1985) by Shinji Somai
Image
Although considered by many academics as one of the best Japanese films of the 80s, and having won a number of awards in Japan, including the Grand Prix from the Young Cinema Grand Prize at the 1985 Tokyo Film Festival and Best Director from Three Continents in Nantes, “Typhoon Club” remains a relatively unknown film in the West.

Typhoon Club is screening at San Diego Asian Film Festival

The story revolves around a number of students attending a school at a suburb in Tokyo, and takes place on a five days span, mostly before and after a typhoon hits the place. Rie is the popular girl in the class, and has a rather strange relationship with Mikami, who is the male equivalent of hers. Both, however, hide some psychological issues, with Rie being filled with self-doubt and Mikami with dark philosophical thoughts, dealing with the way an individual can overcome his species,...

The Best Post 2000s Anime, Ranked
Image
Anime makes tremendous breakthroughs each decade and there’s a distinct feeling that accompanies these different time periods, whether they’re series from the ‘80s, ‘90s, the 2000s or beyond. Some of anime’s most popular series like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Serial Experiments Lain, or Trigun are all pre-2000s content, but that’s not to say that modern anime don’t have their charms.

Anime continues to evolve and learn from its past, which means that post-2000s series have opportunities and luxuries that were previously impossible. There’s still a lot of understandable nostalgic love for the anime series from the past. However, there’s plenty of current content that pushes boundaries, inspires audiences, and arguably even tops retro anime series.
